INHABITED BOUNDARY

Design as a Political Act Art and Politics of the Commons on the Atlanta Beltline

Design Proposal A long stretch of the Beltline in south Atlanta serves to subvert the way transportation lines are used to enforce strict social devisions separating impoverished neighborhoods like that of Pittsburgh to the south from more upscale suburban enclaves like Peoplestown to the north. The permeable wall connects two sides with a park, while providing essential public services. “ Tree Houses for Learning” is a Charter High School for Environmental Science and Technology which invokes memories of children’s favorite play spaces to create diverse and exciting learning atmospheres and stimulate student’s curiosity in environmental processes and learning. The program is laid out in three distinct zones: the front section facing 10th street houses all public functions including cafeteria, gymnasium, and library, the middle section is an open green space for school and sport functions, and the “tree houses“ facing the eco-commons to the south are the main classroom space.

Design Proposal

Incorporating Duany’s proposal for future Roswell development and the history of the area to create a mixed-used|hospital development which serves the needs of Roswell residents and suggests a model for future expansion of the site. The program is organized in a rectilinear floor plan, intersected by a central pedestrian spine which acts as a connector between the two sides of our site and an active zone for community interactions. The massing of the building is balanced through a series of penetrations - interior and exterior courtyards, which bring more light into the building and provide various environments for the building users.

Project Site - Corner of Forrest Street and Norcross, Roswell, GA Program - Roswell Wellness Center & Clinic including Public &

Wellness Center, Admitting and Registration, Surgery Suite, Diagnostics Center, Adult Acute and ICU Care Units, Cardiology Center, Women’s Center, Administrative and Public Services . Total Building & Parking Sq. Ft. - 288, 151 sq. ft.

Guiding Principles:

1. Evidence-Based Design 2. Site Specificity and Community Involvement 3. Attention on Preventive Care 4. Site Accessibility | Wayfinding | Transparency 5. Patient Safety and Comfort
