message from the GROUP EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

We are building a legacy that we want to share with all our kanika guests and clients Spyros Karaolis Group EXECUTIVE Chairman

dear friends

I

t is with great joy that we present the second issue of our Accents magazine. As you turn the pages you can gain a real insight into the different aspects of Kanika with updates from each of the hotels that span the southern shore of our island and news about our initiatives and the projects we are developing. We also introduce some of Cyprus’s delights: a tour of Cyprus wines, our excellent golf courses and a trip along the beautiful coastline. You can feel the fun of our entertainment programme and feast your eyes on the signature dishes presented by our executive chefs. This is just a taste of the content that awaits you in Accents. As service and hospitality are the cornerstones of Kanika, we would also like to give you confidence in our ability to deliver. Therefore, it is with pleasure that we first give you a tour of our company, our heritage and our future.

Founded on principle As a company centred on tourism and construction, we hold a responsible position in our country’s evolution and a duty to our customers. With this in mind, and as an introduction to the Kanika Group of Companies, we lay out a brief history and bring you up to date on current activities. Our founder is Mr Theodosis Karaolis who established his first architectural office in Famagusta in 1962. After the events of 1974 he came to Limassol where he set up Kanika Group with two other partners to concentrate on construction and land development. From these foundations grew Kanika Hotels, Kanika Developments, Kanika Project Management and more recently Kanika Olympic Ltd. Milestones on the Kanika journey include the development of the stunning familyfocused Olympic Lagoon Resort in Agia Napa and the Enaerios complex in Limassol which consists of 750 apartments, shops, offices and the Pantheon Hotel. This year we will open the doors of the Kanika International Business Centre, a prestigious project of high-tech, luxury offices right next to the sea.

A healthy future

KANIKA’S FOUNDER, MR KARAOLIS, PRESIDED OVER THE PANCYPRIAN LAND DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE FOR MANY YEARS.

MR THEODOSIS KARAOLIS (RIGHT) WITH MR Nicos Christou (CENTER) AND MR Anastasis Kapetanios (LEFT) WITH THE MODEL OF THE ENAERIOS COMPLEX IN LIMASSOL WHICH STILL RANKS AS A MAJOR MILESTONE IN THE KANIKA HISTORY.

Building, operating and maintaining the hundreds of residential and commercial schemes and the five hotels that make up the Kanika portfolio is now directed by the next generation of the Karaolis family and facilitated by over 800 staff. And though the past holds many achievements, we also look forward to the future. It is with a spirit of commitment, consistency and dynamism that we will innovate and improve on our quality projects. Among these are our residential complexes in the stunning village of Moni near Limassol where a luxury lifestyle is now being enjoyed by many families. The Alexander the Great in Pafos is also a favourite of many of our repeat guests, and as part of our pioneering approach we will totally renovate the hotel over the 2012 winter season. A snapshot of both these projects is included in Accents.

A perspective on our work In all our plans, responsibility is a very important principle, both socially and environmentally. Being land developers, we are ever aware of the legacy we leave, so with new techniques in building available, we aim to always use the most energy efficient designs, methods and materials in our projects. Our sustainable approach also extends to hotel management, staff inclusion and charity work. And to reward our efforts in the hospitality field, Kanika have been awarded the Travelife Gold Award presented by independent auditors on behalf of the International Federation of Tour Operators for demonstrating a high commitment to sustainability. We have accomplished many goals in the history of our company, but we believe that one of our greatest is the establishment of the Ithaki Association in the European Year of Volunteering 2011. A non-profit organization, Ithaki has clear-cut goals: to raise funds, train and educate carers and the public, and finally to establish the first centre in Cyprus, all for the treatment of dementia. We hope to achieve all our plans and we thank our volunteers for their time and energy.

message from the GROUP EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

The opening ceremony of the Alexander the Great Beach Hotel in 1985 was attended by the late President of Cyprus, Mr Spyros Kyprianou, as well as several other VIPs and dignitaries.

The Kanika Spirit We could not, however, meet our corporate and social goals without understanding our markets, relating to each other and ensuring that everyone we contact receives what we call the Kanika Spirit. The word SPIRIT is an acronym for Service, Professionalism, Innovation, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork. It then is subdivided into actions that Kanika staff members have identified. Actions such as “I take the initiative, anticipate and solve guest needs” and “I lead by example and I also ensure others implement standards”. It took honesty and integrity for our staff to come together and discuss what they felt were the most important aspects of our work. But the exercise bore fruit, and now the Kanika Spirit underlines our purpose and vision: “To offer the leading hospitality experience in Cyprus, through our innovative facilities and services.”

All thanks to you Our staff gives dedication and service, but you as guests and clients give your loyalty, and for this we want to thank you. To show our appreciation, we are consistently looking for ways to improve your holiday experience. We innovate new packages: for wedding parties, for inclusive dining, for entertainment value, for children’s care and for deals on accommodation groups. We build in complimentary elements and treats that will make your holiday or your Kanika home very special. You may ask how we know what you want, and our answer is “because you tell us”; through feedback questionnaires, through our new social media programme and just by talking with our staff. You give us high scores on website channels and wonderful comments to our tour operator partners. We gain awards from your feedback and we are honoured by each and every one. In turn, we run loyalty schemes for hospitality in our hotels and incentives for our property owners, for it is only by saying thank you that the Kanika Spirit is upheld. So, as I close this page and you turn to the next, we wish you every enjoyment whether you are relaxing in your hotel or perusing this magazine for a more permanent home with Kanika. We are at your disposal and we look forward to your feedback.

message from the GROUP HOTELS MANAGER

As one of our recent guests commented, the Olympic Lagoon Resort has “something for everyone at this paradise”.

dear guest

This is the response we were hoping for after our multimillion-euro renovation programme went live in 2011. We see people every day enjoying the new facilities and we hear from our guests how much they relish returning; not only to the Olympic Lagoon but to all our hotels in Cyprus. In fact, this feedback is one of the most important aspects of our work; receiving it, reading it and using it to congratulate our staff on a job well done. Of course, complacency is not an option as we find many of our feedback routes give us a chance to improve. We employ the services of a Mystery Shopping company where real time reactions of a third and often critical party contribute to detailed improvements. Our tour operators give us helpful advice to serve customers better, and our in-house questionnaire gives guests an opportunity to voice honest opinions. My personal preference is to talk to guests, and at all Kanika hotels we truly enjoy our get-togethers, both at the weekly management cocktail receptions to greet new arrivals and at the repeaters cocktail parties to welcome them back. We chat about what they are looking forward to on holiday and what has changed since last we saw each other. We ask how everything is and we take all opinions on board. This constant communication sparks our enthusiasm and our willingness to get things right and achieve more. As you can see, your feedback is valued and we encourage you to tell us how you feel. Come and join us at our cocktail reception, talk to our managers and guest relations officers. If it suits, then use our Facebook page, Twitter or TripAdvisor; we will pick up each comment and act upon it, for we have learnt that it is only by listening to you that we can offer ‘this paradise’.

Sincerely yours,

Christos Pericou Group Hotels General Manager

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER SPyROS MICHAELIDES KEEPS UP WITH CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND ENSURES THAT THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.

n today’s information revolution, everyone has a different way to keep up with subjects of interest, including, of course, holidays. But how does a hotel company provide for so many different people using all those different channels? Spyros Michaelides, Kanika’s new Business Development Manager, answers, “We invest! Time, energy and people are what we need to run a comprehensive contact programme so all our followers can gain immediate information on any subject they request. Technology has opened our world to information; it is up to us to use it responsibly by building networks and communities that really benefit the user.” In charge of e-commerce is Alexia Xanthou, who works enthusiastically as Kanika’s pioneer in social media. She says, “Learning from guests, both past and future, is a great way to make sure we offer what they want. Already there are groups getting together on the Kanika Hotel Group Facebook page to share their experiences and pose questions. One such group has Kanika brides asking about the important details of their special forthcoming day, such as hairdressers, spa treatments and honeymoon accommodation. Responses often come from other brides who have had their wedding at a Kanika hotel, or we can help with the facts.” Facebook gives the opportunity to get answers quickly, see photos and find news of events, renovations and promotions, while Twitter acts as a ‘purchase place’ and announcements board. As Alexia explains, “Follow us on Twitter and pick up news of upgrades, events, new restaurants and menus, new cocktails and wines, then link to our web page to book. Nothing could be easier and you can be the first to hear about limited offers.” When linking through to the web, you will soon have a new site to explore. There will be new images of hotels and a faster reservation system. Alexia continues, “With all the renovations that have taken place in our hotels recently, we want everyone to see what they can enjoy; the Fisherman’s Village at Olympic Lagoon, the Kiku Japanese restaurant at Alexander the Great and Sunset Pier for weddings at Elias Beach are just a few of the new highlights.” Another feature of the website will be a database of loyal guests who can sign up to receive the latest information through email. Spyros Michaelides notes, “Kanika’s ultimate aim is to create unique moments for guests; to do that we need to recognize what is important and make sure we keep the information flowing. Our email messages and newsletters are easy to read and useful, while our social

Pinterest is set up for Kanika guests to go straight to a topic of interest such as dining, entertainment or weddings and see a showcase of facilities and services.

KANIKA’S SOCIAL MEDIA PIONEER, ALEXIA XANTHOU, KNOWS THAT PLATFORMS NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE - BUT TECHNOLOGY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE ALL SERIOUS.

media and websites are fast and interactive. We have something for everyone, but technology changes daily and we are constantly updating.” Next on the list of networking platforms is Pinterest, where viewers can find specific interest topics. Alexia will be organizing content and she says, “If someone wants to know about the entertainment programme on offer or the kids clubs or the Kanika dining experience, they will be able to access Pinterest and find out easily through this category based function. It’s an exciting development in our social media strategy.” The future is here as the world uses modern platforms to communicate, so Kanika will also be formatting all their channels for mobile smart phones and tablets. Alexia concludes, “It’s important to be as accessible and flexible as possible. But technology doesn’t have to be all serious; guests can join our virtual hotel community on a mobile app game called Foursquare. The more followers they get, the more influential they become – they may even make it to Mayor of the hotel and enjoy rewards like a free spa or accommodation.” If you would like to join Kanika in the social media revolution, click ‘Like’ or follow us on: Facebook: Kanika Hotels Cyprus Twitter: @KanikaHotels (company), @EliasKanika, @AlexanderKanika, @KanikaPantheon, @OlympicKanika Web: www.kanikahotels.com

Great Feedback As well as through online communities, Kanika also gains feedback through independent networks. One such channel is the TripAdvisor website, where ranking is based purely on guests’ remarks. So Kanika would like to thank guests for endorsing the Alexander the Great in Pafos, Olympic Lagoon in Agia Napa, Pantheon and Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol, as these hotels have all received 2012 Trip Advisor® Certificate of Excellence Awards, accolades only given for consistently outstanding traveller reviews.

Thank you again

On average, 50% of Alexander the Great guests are repeaters, with many often coming 2 to 3 times per year. “We like to take care of our wonderful and loyal guests by saying thank you in a variety of ways,” says Mr Costas Stavrou, General Manager. “We offer upgrades and special rates to our repeaters as a matter of course.” However, the hotel paid particular thanks to one special guest, Mrs Beryl Watt, by celebrating her 60th visit with a management cocktail party and a presentation of flowers. Mr Stavrou adds, “Thank you again, Valerie, and we hope to see you and all our repeat guests next year when you can enjoy all our new hotel facilities.” 10 | K A N I K A

The choice is yours!

Rewarding Success

At the Alexander the Great, our staff and facilities are our major attributes; for only with excellent service and beautiful amenities will guests give positive feedback. Tour operator awards are one barometer of success in achieving guest satisfaction, and it seems that we are meeting with our guests’ approval. Over the course of last year, the tour operators that work in partnership with Kanika gave some of their top accolades to the Alexander the Great – Thomson, Thomas Cook and Saga all presented awards, with the web hosted feedback channel, TripAdvisor, assigning a Certificate of Excellence in 2012. The Alexander the Great also accepted the Travelife Gold Award for 2011-2013—an award that displays a very high commitment to sustainability—given by independent auditors working on behalf of the International Federation of Tour Operators. Thank you to all who made these awards possible, both guests and staff. We are honoured to have received the following: Certificate of Excellence TripAdvisor 2012, Thomson Gold Medal Top Gold Medal Winner 2011, Thomas Cook Award for Excellence 2011, Saga Holidays Top performer Stay, Saga Holidays Good Food 2011, Travelife Gold Award 2011-2013.

Dine in grandeur Full renovation last year has turned the Royal Suite into one of the hotel’s most popular and intimate venues. The facilities of the 2-bedroom penthouse with its 50sqm veranda are perfect for functions that demand an exquisite setting, special features such as the rose water welcome and panoramas of sunset, harbour and sea. Recently has hosted events include a wedding gourmet dinner for 25 and a party where all 15 guests looked over the sea while flambÊ dishes were prepared on site. There was also a dinner for a group of wedding agents where Greek named dishes were served by waiters in classical Greek costume and a cocktail reception on Pafos Castle Opera evening was regal indeed.

A new era

W

e know our guests love the Alexander the Great. After all, fifty percent are repeaters coming back year after year. However, we also know that ensuring the hotel’s elegant environment is well maintained means that improvements are always necessary. To this end, the hotel is undergoing the largest renovation programme seen at the Alexander the Great for the last decade. Over the course of winter 2012-13, the plans to completely renew the hotel will take luxury to a new level, from rooms to pools, gardens to bars, clubs to entertainment venues. The change is breathtaking, as guests will be greeted by a bright new hotel façade, redesigned landscaped gardens and courtyards, new terraces and wooden pergolas. The hotel’s beautiful seafront location is optimized to the full, with new facilities such as the Alexander and Roxana’s Wedding Venue, restaurant terraces, the foyer veranda and the infinity pool taking full advantage of sea, city and sunset vistas. The fresh design is blended in the colours of this backdrop with natural hues and lavish accessories carefully chosen to retain the sophisticated image but bring a modern look to the luxury offered. Key features of the renovation are outlined here, but we look forward to showing you the finished plan and, hopefully, welcoming you to the new Alexander the Great.

pool

The design of the new pool and colourful garden area is one of the most exciting new features. The infinity pool with its flowing waterfalls, gentle whirlpools and pressure jets is elevated to give you a seascape panorama of the blue Mediterranean. You can soak in the sun or be served refreshing drinks at the themed swim-up bar which spans the whole width of the pool. Cushioned loungers on the new wooden deck are perfect for sunbathing while children are protected in the shade of the canopy over the new kids’ pool.

weddings

Couples so often choose the wonderful island of Cyprus to celebrate their love, and now at the Alexander the Great, they can enter a fantasy wedding world as the new Alexander and Roxana’s Wedding Venue is designed with pure romance in mind. Cross the little bridge over peaceful waterfalls gently flowing in the lake beneath. A beautifully canopied aisle will lead you through the exclusive terrace, elevated for privacy and for guests to enjoy the sea breeze, the sunshine or the famous Pafos sunset. You will marvel at the azure Mediterranean Sea, the ancient fishing harbour and the historic Castle of Pafos, for these stunning Cypriot landmarks form the backdrop to your perfect wedding celebration.

accommodation

When the decision was made to remodel accommodation, three sample rooms were constructed to the styles of Lea Anastasiou, interior designer at Kanika Group, to give a choice of the best on offer. The style selected fits perfectly with the hotel’s image and with new amenities and spaceplanning, the rooms both look and feel generous and sumptuous. The plan is for two-poster beds with stunning linen to stand on deep pile carpets, surrounded by bedside cabinets, minibar, dressing tables and comfortable sofas or ottomans; the reality is a ‘home away from home’ ambience that fulfils the desire for luxury. A plasma TV and entertainment system with internet and smart-phone station are standard, and now bathrooms are bigger with daylight pouring through from the bedroom. Marble lined walls, rain-shower systems, huge bathtubs, some with jacuzzi, a sound system and exclusive toiletries are all incorporated within an elegant interior design. With new furniture on the balconies, the picture is complete and your room is ready.

kids

Kanika kids always have fun on holiday, and with the new extended club to be built at the Alexander the Great, their smiles are guaranteed. As part of the renovation plans, the new kids club is the ultimate in secure and stimulating spaces. Large indoor facilities will host a daily programme of activities, arts and crafts, games, leisure and sports. Open to children from 2 to 12 years old, the club invites youngsters to make new friends and participate in new adventures. Staff members are of the highest calibre, all holding certificates of professional standing and fully experienced in keeping little ones entertained and safe.

entertainment

The standard of the Kanika entertainment experience is about to be enhanced by the brand new venue at the Alexander the Great. For fun summer evenings, this outdoor performance area will stage a variety of shows to make every night memorable. The hi-tech lighting and sound will add to the excitement as you relax in the new seating of comfortable bamboo furniture, enjoy drinks brought to your table and applaud the family fun shows, grand cabaret style shows, musical & tribute shows, magicians and hypnotists. Under the night sky, the stars of the show will shine.

Cyprus wines

Georgios Kassianos has a string of accreditations to his name. As President of the Cyprus Sommelier Association, wine journalist and member of the Committee of the Cyprus Wine Product Council, he now shares his knowledge of the Cyprus wine scene.

W

hen choosing a wine from a specific country, it is always good to know a little, or a lot, about the wine scene there: a touch of history, topography and more than a bit of tasting. Only then will the experience of a country’s viticulture become clear. It is in this vein that Georgios Kassianos opens his conversation. The history of Cyprus wine is easy: it is extremely old. Past the medieval knights who encouraged Commandaria, beyond ancient Greek times when Dionysos is pictured at Pafos with a glass in his hand, back to the Neolithic; it seems that wine has been here forever. However, the majority of bygone red wines were disputed in quality, and even until recently, Cyprus rejected white and rosé. But with better quality wine appearing, with temperature rises and the suitability of our diets to rosé, this has become the trend. More people prefer rosé to white as a cool evening drink. With quality grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, Shiraz and Maratheftiko, Cyprus now offers a superb rosé. Levanda, rosé Shiraz Tsangarides and Zambartas are clear favourites. Popular reds are Maratheftiko from Zambartas, Cabernet Sauvignon from Kyperounda and Shiraz from Domaine Vlassides. And of course, the indigenous Cyprus white grape of Xinisteri puts the Kolios Persephone and Petritis from Kyperounda as favoured whites.

Smooth operators To achieve this improvement, Cypriot wineries have used new technology to smooth the wines from their rough tannins, to give a ‘new world’ experience. Take the Cabernet grape; harvest is mid

THE ANCIENT INDIGENOUS GRAPES OF CYPRUS, XINISTERI AND MARATHEFTIKO, ALONGSIDE THE MORE POPULAR IMPORTED VARIETALS, ARE COMPETING IN international COMPETITIONS AND WINNING AWARDS THAT PROVE THEIR QUALITY.

WINE

Cyprus has all the correct conditions for excellent wine-making and now wineries are opening their doors to share the fruits of their harvest.

August in 40˚C of heat. So after blending grapes from different vineyards, the product inevitably varies in quality. To offset this, care is taken with science and location. With the premise made that the grape is all-important, owners look to their slope conditions. For example, Xinisteri is now planted on the cooler north-facing slopes to retain their acidity. The attention given to the fruit is improving results too: they are handpicked early morning, blending techniques and compatibility of varietals are now understood and micro-oxidation is used to speed up the barrel affect by letting oxygen in as needed. The effects can be tasted in fresh wines and excellent vintages.

The truth behind the vintage Good vintages depend on stable weather during flowering and ripening. As grapes need to ripen in conditions that allow them slow maturity, an increase in temperature makes the grape mature faster than normal. High humidity causes mildew problems in the vineyards, especially those at a lower altitude. Hence the higher slopes of Pafos and Limassol give altitude, stability and excellent conditions. In Cyprus, it is the vintage reds of 1994 and 1995 that are considered to be the best as the weather was perfectly balanced. More recently, 2009 gave exceptional rosés, whereas 2007 and 2008 were superb for the full-bodied reds Merlot, Maratheftiko and Shiraz. In terms of colour, Cyprus reds are rich due to the sun but tannins can vary in the popular blended wines. So when looking at a red, let the polyphenols inform your judgement before giving a bottle cellar space; these are aspects like tannins, alcohol levels and acidity. Cyprus whites, on the other hand, are only good to lie down for up to four years if they have high acidity or have been barrelled, like Chardonnay. However, Georgios recommends enjoying rosés and whites like Xinisteri when they are fresh. 16 | K A N I K A

accents

Routes to success In any wine selection, it is always good to pick from a vineyard that is controlled, where the owner and viticulturist have a relationship with their vineyard, and the drinker can track the grapes. So in this respect, visitors are urged to take a trip to see the slopes, equipment, cellar, and to taste the wine. To facilitate this, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has recently established the wine routes of Cyprus, six in all, leading through the vineyards of about fifty scattered wineries with an information booklet to correspond to road signage. These routes were followed long before they became official, well trodden paths for today’s wine lovers.

The Alexander the Great is investing in food and wine culture with a new wine list and gourmet Wine and Dine evenings.

Cyprus finest Another wine route tracks the origins of Commandaria. Poetically named ‘a child of the sun’, this is a wine with a full Cypriot heritage. A complex wine loaded with sugar, its versatility is astounding and only now is it being used to its potential – over ice, in cocktails, as an energy drink, with fruit, ice cream and cheese, or as a syrup on yoghurt. Fikardou winery and the big four of Sodap, Keo, ETKO and LOEL are especially associated with Commandaria. Georgios advocates its presence in international restaurants by marketing it as an amazing wine from a Mediterranean island where slopes of indigenous Xinisteri and Mavro are identified and ancient methods of production employed – a winning formula for any wine menu.

Winning wines Cyprus wine is competing internationally nowadays, even though its first win was as recent as 1989, by Agios Andronikos. Fikardou wines came next, then over the last decade, courage and funding have pushed Cyprus wines to compete in the larger international competitions like Thessaloniki and the Decanter Awards – and they are doing very well. At home, the Cyprus Wine Competition under the auspices of the OIV has encouraged overall quality for the last seven years. The technical committee of the Wine Product Council go to each winery and pick from the stock, then review 160 wines. In 2012, the top gold went to Kyperounda for their Shiraz 2009 in the dry wine category; Metharmi 2008 from Agroktima Ezousa gained the Special Distinction for Maratheftiko, and the Xinisteri Special Distinction went to the Ayioklima 2011 from C.G. Constantinou. Grand Gold was kept for Keo Commandaria St. John 2005, and what a well deserved victory. Now that you have some knowledge of Cyprus wine, Georgios encourages you, “Every wine is different and every palate is different; find your match and enjoy wine with a passion.”

Wine & Dine Alexander the Great in Pafos hosts evenings of gourmet dining with wine pairing compiled by the hotel’s chefs and in collaboration with Cyprus wineries. Award winning wineries Sodap, Kyperounda and Zambartas started the first Wine & Dine series in spring 2012. The summer heralds the wine harvest and the hot months, so ouzo and rosé dinners are served – pretty in pink events. In September and October, Chef Laszlo from Garibaldi Restaurant prepares platters to match the country’s latest fresh and vintage offerings. The aim is to marry food and wine and create a culture of the two – making a home for this couple at the Alexander. Each evening comprises pre-dinner canapés, hors d’oeuvres, sorbet, the main, le fromage, sweet and coffee and petits fours; each course having a selection of plates and a different wine to suit. To get your mouth watering, here is and excerpt from the Sodap menu: 2011 Maratheftiko Rosé served with canapés such as fresh strawberries wrapped in Parma ham, a 2011 Chardonnay with Mediterranean seafood and fish Carpaccio, Mandarin sorbet with minty oak aged Zivania, Beef fillet with a 2008 Shiraz, a 2009 Merlot Noir with cranberry coated Goat’s cheese, ending with iced Commandaria with Anarotourta mille-feuille. From the Alexander’s restaurants, the setting is chosen to fit the ambience of the food and wine. Please contact reception for venues and menus.

Aphrodite Hills

Eléa Golf Club

A favourite competition venue

A Mediterranean masterpiece

Aphrodite Hills’ 18-hole championship golf course occupies two plateaux, separated by a dramatic ravine, and has amazing views over the Mediterranean. The 130-metre gorge dividing tees at the 7th, par 3, signature hole provides the perfect opportunity for golfers to put their skills to the test. Overlooking the Mediterranean, the 6,232-metre Cabell Robinson-designed course harmonizes with the natural environment. It plays to a par 71/70 and is a perfect mix of manicured fairways, generous tiered greens and challenging pot bunkers. As Club officials say, “If the gods played golf, this would be their temple”. Visiting golfer Robert Udall says: “Aphrodite Hills golf club is definitely a fantastic place to play. When I approached the 7th tee down a mountainside path on my buggy, I went goosepimply looking across at the green from the tee.” A 3-hole fully-equipped Golf Academy offers a variety of programmes for individuals, couples and groups, and there is a double-ended 350-metre practice range. GOLF

Minthis Hills Cyprus at its best

Extensively renovated by Tom Mackenzie and Martin Egbert in 2006/7, the par 71 Minthis Hills originally opened in 1994 as the first grass course in Cyprus. It was known then as Tsada – the name of the nearby village – and was designed by Donald Steel. At 550 metres above sea level, the 5,843-metre course encircles the12th century Stavros tis Minthis monastery from which it takes its name, and blends superbly into the surrounding vineyards and orchards. A truly eco-friendly course, its new 2,000-square metre clubhouse opened in 2011. Minthis Hills has an outdoor swimming pool and tennis court, offering golfers and their families an enjoyable day out. There are also conference facilities. The lounge, golf terrace and cocktail bar are ideal for pre- and post-game drinks, and the restaurant is renowned, using the finest local and international ingredients to create culinary delights. It’s a walkable course with spectacular views across the town of Pafos to the Mediterranean sea some 15km away and over to the famous Troodos mountains. The elevated tees invite everyone to “have a go”. There are two putting greens, one chipping green and a pitching green. The driving range is perched on a hill, so even topped shots travel a fair distance. Apart from the views, the elevation means the course catches cooling breezes, making it particularly popular in the warmer months. Driving time from Alexander The Great Beach Hotel: 25 minutes

Tip

The ‘signature’ 13th hole is an island green, surrounded by water! With just 150m from the elevated tee to the green, this requires an ‘all or nothing’ shot. 20 | K A N I K A

Secret Valley

Golf at sea level

Secret Valley, near the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou), is only slightly above sea level and noticeably warmer and more wind-sheltered than other courses during the winter months, while a cooling breeze keeps conditions comfortable in summer. Set in a scenic valley and surrounded by natural rock formations, it earns its name. As one local golfer says, “Even if you are having a personal bad golfing day, the scenery will compensate.” Trees line most of the fairways - punishing any golfers making wayward shots - while a meandering stream catches those who lack precision off the tee. The 5,094metre course plays to a par 71 and is eminently walkable. Secret Valley also has a Cypriot-style clubhouse, pro shop, restaurant

and driving range. Some course renovation is currently underway. The 12-bay covered driving range has a maximum distance of 200 metres, and there are two putting greens available. Lessons with the resident PGA Pro can be booked at the Pro Shop. The 18-hole Minthis Hills and Secret Valley Golf Clubs are both managed by Cyprus Golf Resorts Ltd. Officials say: “Besides our growing yearly membership, tourism has brought a significant number of golfers to our courses. We are very much involved in promoting golf in Cyprus.” Indeed, to encourage local youngsters to discover golf, lessons are offered free of charge.

Close to the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, so perhaps golf and sightseeing at the same time!

from the elias beach hotel

With our renovations now complete and awards to prove it, we invite guests to experience restyled rooms, new dining and event concepts, and leisure facilities to fulfil every expectation. Chris N. Aristidou MIH G e n e r a l M a n a ge r

Anyone for tennis?

A brand new floodlit tennis court is the most recent addition to the sports facilities at the Elias Beach Hotel. Open all day from 8am till 10pm, the court and equipment can be booked at the Health Club. This new sporting facility complements the floodlit squash court, the fitness centre, table tennis, billiards, the freshwater swimming pool and sports pool. And for the more adventurous guests, the Elias is also rated as a PADI 5-star Gold Palm Diving Resort and has water sports on its doorstep.

Eventful times! Limassol has established itself as the event and conference hub of Cyprus, with companies and groups from the island and abroad choosing the city to host their functions. Elias Beach Hotel has answered this demand with a total redesign of the Europa conference facilities from scratch, including new lighting and A/V systems. Total capacity can reach 200, with partition walls allowing flexible options for smaller gatherings. The large entrance foyer accessible straight from stairs and lifts is now an impressive registration,

refreshment and breakout area. New lighting transforms any event from conference to wedding, meeting to party. For smaller meetings the syndicate room, Europa C on the ground floor, is fully functional. Full and free wireless internet access serves all delegates at all times. The Elias has had a very successful 2011-12 season of events and continues to develop the facilities and the team to make organizing even easier.

Reach for the stars Elias Beach Hotel is pleased to announce receipt of its latest TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 4 Stars Award 2012. A score of 4.5 stars puts it in line with the top hotels in Limassol, while we thank guests and representatives from Saga Holidays for the award of Saga Holidays Highly Commended Stay 2011. The hotel has also worked hard to achieve quality standards ISO 9001, 18001 (Health & Safety) & 22000, with seminars in progress for the environmental standard ISO 14001.

Spa stimulation

As a 4* superior hotel, the Elias Beach aims to give guests a vacation that will leave them relaxed and regenerated; after all, what are holidays for? To achieve this goal, the hotel has enhanced the beautiful and luxurious tranquillity of the Serenity Spa with a stunning new wing, opened to offer a relaxation room and three new treatment rooms, one with a jacuzzi for hydro treatments. With a full menu of face and body therapies, world-class marine-based spa products and professional staff, the completed Serenity Spa provides all that is needed to find total peace.

Stay in Style The renovation programme that addressed all accommodation at the Elias Beach Hotel was completed as scheduled, in time for the 2012 season. Guests now open their doors to brand new rooms featuring stylish laminate flooring, luxurious bedding and quilts, and shiny bathrooms. The new look interiors have been designed by Lea Anastasiou of Kanika Group and finished to the high quality that Kanika demands. The novelty of the new Kids’ Suites with separate sleeping areas and PlayStation 2 TVs is proving increasingly popular, and the stunning sea views they share with Superior Rooms and Junior Suites are enhanced by new furniture on the balconies. Standard Rooms are now way beyond average as they also received the full refurbishment treatment with attractive décor and warm colours to set off the luxurious Mediterranean feel of the Elias Beach.

Recipe for Success The Elias Beach Hotel proudly presents a new concept in dining to enrich the increasingly popular All-Inclusive package which is favoured by approximately 90% of all Elias Hotel guests. The modernized Flavours Restaurant and the elegant Amadeus Restaurant are now linked to a separate and uniquely designed buffet station room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served from here. Although à la carte is still available, this buffet station – the first of its kind in any Limassol hotel – heralds a new way of service. The buffet arrangements attract guests first to the vast selection of salads and starters before luring them to the feast of hot dishes where chefs cook to order for flambé or grilled dishes. Desserts beckon and cheese and fruit tantalize. Thanks to the capacity of the stations, guests have even more variety on the menu – a menu that they get to choose!

Every day at every Kanika hotel, gourmet menus, lavish buffets and gala dinners are prepared by professional chefs of national and international renown. DINING

“I use different approaches with our local ingredients so that our guests can learn about and appreciate the wonderful aromas and rich flavours of Cyprus cuisine.”

Chef Ant on is Nicolaou

Chef’s Table Every Tuesday evening, eight diners join Chef Antonis to participate in a distinctive gastronomic event, beginning with a personal tour of our state-of-the-art cooking facilities. A table is set up, fine-dining style, in the center of the kitchen where guests enjoy and discuss with our chefs 9 unique courses, each accompanied by a different Cypriot wine. Local ingredients are emphasized—halloumi, kolokasi, lamb, Commandaria—and each diner takes home a special Cyprus product as a gift.

“Making a dish is an art that needs to come from the heart. From the selection of fresh herbs grown in the garden and quality ingredients nas to arrangement and t os Koudou is r h C f e h C blending, I like to connect nature with cooking and use my passion to compose a perfect plate.” Candlelight Wedding Dish A succulent prime beef tournedo is congenially wedded to seared foie gras and blessed with a festive sauce of yellow pepper, brandy, white wine and, of course, passion fruit. Joining the wedding party are snow peas, asparagus spears, red peppers, enoki mushrooms, red onion and quartered potatoes. A special dish for a most special occasion, with compliments to the wedding couple from the Elias beach Hotel.

“I take traditional Italian domestic flavours, fuse them through modern French techniques and adjust to suit the Chef Lasz lo Warnusz milder tastes of the Cypriot palate. Fresh local ingredients and a fresh perspective on recipes; this is my approach to successful cooking.”

Garibaldi Italian Tender chicken breast is stuffed with fresh spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and local goat cheese, then wrapped in Parma ham, trussed up ballotine-style to preserve all the essential juices and cooked at high temperature to guarantee a savoury crispness. Served with a medley of Mediterranean vegetables and herbed potatoes.

lambos Chef Chara

ou Charalamb

“My philosophy is to keep it simple to achieve the tastiest results. Too many ingredients, too many herbs or spices, can obscure the primary flavour elements of a dish.”

Pantheon Diana Restaurant Dessert The amazing Chocolate Mousse with Orange Filfar Coulis is two decadent dollops of dark chocolate mousse, thick with cocoa-butterrich black couvertura atop a wafer-light sliver of Genoise sponge cake. Swirl each bite in the accompanying golden coulis syrup of Filfar liqueur, fresh oranges and lemon, and be happy.

DINING

“Identity and adaptation of oneself as a chef and of the dishes you create is important. As with Japanese food, the concept is similar; Chef Ant on is Nicolaou identify the simple and separate ingredients on the plate and allow the diner to adapt and blend the flavours to suit.”

Kiku at Alexander & Olympic Lagoon This presentation of high quality Norwegian teppanyaki salmon served with teriyaki, honey and ginger sauce, sticky Japanese rice and vegetables is a favourite on Kiku’s deliberately limited exquisite menu. Also featured are other teppanyaki meat and fish grills, sushi, maki, oriental salads and soba noodles. For an exotic dessert, try the green tea creme brulee with grapefruit-orange sorbet or the sinfully dark chocolate wasabi mousse with mandarin granita!

Costas St

avrou

“Though I’ve had the chance to learn about French and Continental cuisine, I still find I love Cypriot food. I like to do more to bring our guests in touch with real Cyprus through tasting traditional local products.”

Cafe Royal Breakfast at Alexander The already sumptuous Breakfast Buffet has a new addition that brings guests closer to the island’s culinary culture. The Cyprus Corner showcases pure native products such as fresh mint, oregano, coriander, raw honey, honey with almonds, carob honey, grape syrup from nearby vineyards and homemade marmalades. Combine these with the buffet delights of anari and halloumi cheeses, regional olives, lountza ham (grilled on request) and local yoghurt to experience the taste of Cyprus.

from the olympic lagoon resort AND OLYMPIC BAY

Our all-encompassing renovations have gone as planned and now even more variety in facilities and service is available to our guests. We hope you enjoy each and every one! Christos Pericou G r o u p H o te l s G e n e r a l M a n a ge r

The Chef’s Table

New to Olympic Lagoon and initiated by renowned chef, Antonis Nicolaou, the Chef’s Table is a weekly banqueting event where eight guests are seated with the head chef in a separate panoramic room in the middle of the Resort’s kitchens. This is a once in a lifetime experience to see how a kitchen serving 3,000 meals actually works. Reserve your exclusive place at Chef’s Table through reception.

Fisherman’s Village The new adults-only Fisherman’s Village is now open and guests are starting to feed back their delight with this superb accommodation. “Perfect”’, said one guest regarding the four-poster bed, jacuzzi bath and perks like champagne in the room. “Words cannot say how wonderful this was”, said another guest in appreciation of the infinity pool directly outside the sun bed terrace and for the exclusive use of the Fisherman’s Village. Privacy and peace are the two words that keep coming through about this adults-only oasis and we hope that our future guests feel the same.

All-Inclusive Explained

A new booklet in several different languages is now available to all guests who book the Kanika Hotels All-Inclusive packages. The invaluable ‘Little Blue Book’ explains exactly what A-I guests receive, where, when and how, allowing them to take full advantage of the exceptional benefits. Adults have their own haven at Olympic Bay but the fun and facilities of the famous Olympic Lagoon Resort are only a few steps away.

The wedding scene

Adults’ Olympic

The renovation of the resort’s wedding venues and the provision of adults-only accommodation have made the hotel a truly idyllic place to tie the knot. In fact, Olympic Lagoon is famous for its weddings and many guests love to watch these ‘special days’. The positioning of the wedding venues around the hotel makes this possible, while the size of the resort allows wedding guests and hotel guests to mingle but not to intrude. The perfectly formed Aphrodite arbour is next to the adults-only pool and the Olympian Gardens are tucked away beyond Watermill Square. These are where the actual services take place and receptions are held at Watermill Square, Liminaki island, Captains Deck and on the lawns of the Olympian Gardens. Sharing your wedding day and alternatively your holiday can be great fun. As one guest said, “the weddings were so lovely to watch, it took me back to my own wedding day and brought back wonderful memories.”

The Olympic Bay is the tranquil oasis situated opposite the main resort and directly on the crystal white sands of Landa Beach. It was created to give adults and couples the desired privacy they need while on holiday, but what many guests find surprising is the added thrill of having all that the Olympic Lagoon Resort offers just a stone’s throw away and fully accessible. Imagine a holiday designed for adults with luxurious rooms and king size beds, private check-in with champagne and chocolates. An exclusive breakfast and, when you have chosen your sun beds, waiters bring cool towels, drinks and fruit to your side. Swimming in the blue pool is followed by lunch on the deck and maybe a relaxing jacuzzi in your room. But then you can dress up and go for a night out at any of the four resort restaurants and enjoy the music in the Cinnamon Bar. Adults-only pampering is definitely the order of the day.

AWARD

Olympic Lagoon Resort is proud to receive awards from Thomas Cook and Fisher tour operators and the Certificate of Excellence 2012 from TripAdvisor. Thank you to all our guests who made these awards possible through their feedback. KANIKA

Kourion (Curium) Kourion is an archaeological site of ruins, mosaics and a stunning Greco-Roman amphitheatre (thought to have been built during the 2nd century), which is still used today for open-air plays and concerts. Excavations uncovered floor mosaics from the 5th century AD in some of the houses (The House of Achilles, The House of the Gladiators and The House of Eustolios). The House of Eustolios, which was a private villa in the early Christian period, consists of a complex of baths in addition to the floor mosaics. Kolossi Castle Kolossi Castle was built in 1210 by Frankish military when the land of Kolossi was given to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem by King Hugh I. It served firstly as the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar then as the headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Later on it was used for the production of sugar, which was one of the major

exports of the island during the Middle Ages. It was rebuilt in 1454 by the Hospitallers and it is this structure that remains now and is a fine example of military architecture. Location: A few kilometres from Limassol

Pafos District The Tombs of the Kings The Tombs of the Kings is a necropolis (burial place) that was built during the Hellenistic period (3rd century BC), and used during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (3rd century BC - beginning of 4th century AD). The tombs are carved from solid rock with some of them featuring Doric columns and frescoed walls. Despite the grandeur of its name, no kings were buried there, but instead the necropolis was for higher administrative officers and distinguished Ptolemaic personalities and their families. During the late 19th century, the tombs were looted. Opening Hours: Jun - Sept, 8am-7.30pm (daily), May - Oct, 8am-5pm, daily) Contact Details: Tombs of the Kings Road, Tel: 2630 6295

Petra Tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock) Cyprus is called ‘the island of love’ thanks to the goddess Aphrodite, which is why this site, located 25 km east of Pafos, is undoubtedly not only the most famous site in the greater Pafos region, but possibly the most famous on all the island. Legend tells that Aphrodite - the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty - was ‘born’ from the sea foam at this spot and took her first steps on the island. The spot is marked by a large rock. It was believed that swimming around this rock three times at midnight would bring you eternal youth whilst swimming with your beloved would grant you eternal love. The area itself offers some of the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Location: 25 km east of Pafos, 9km east of Kouklia, off the coast, along the main road to Limassol.

Pafos Medieval Fort The focal point of Kato Pafos is the harbour with its medieval fort surrounded by cafés and restaurants. Although the fort stands strong and proud, it has been built and rebuilt numerous times. First the Byzantines erected it to protect the harbour, then the Lusignans

rebuilt it in the 13th century, only for it to be dismantled by the Venetians in 1570 and once again rebuilt by the Ottomans (after they captured the island in the 16th century). It has subsequently served as a prison and a salt warehouse. During September, opera is performed in the open air using the castle as a backdrop. Location: Pafos harbour

Pafos Bird and Animal Park Pafos Bird and Animal Park is home to a multitude of different birds and other animals such as reptiles, mammals and even the rarely sighted moufflon – the national animal of the island. In the olden days it was customary for grandparents to give their grandchildren money in the morning. According to myth, mischievous and

evil spirits called ‘kalikantzari’ would prey on people and play tricks on them during the twelve days of Christmas. On the eve of Epiphany, known as ‘kalanda’, housewives would throw pancakes and sausages on their roofs where the ‘kalikantzari’ were believed to dwell - in order to please them, so that they would leave contented without causing any trouble.

FEBRUARY Limassol Carnival Thurs, Mar 7 - Sun, Mar 17 Carnival week marks the start of the fasting period leading up to Easter. The actual word for carnival in Greek is ‘apokries’ which comes from the French and Italian words for ‘away from meat’. The carnival period is essentially the 10 days leading up to Lent when people can have fun before the challenge of fasting and abstinence. The main carnival is held in Limassol with an organised programme of parades, exhibitions, a serenaders show, competitions and plenty of other entertainment. Full details of the programme each year can be found on the Limassol Municipality website: www.limassolmunicipal.com.cy

MARCH Green Monday (Start of Greek Lent) Mon, Mar 18 Green Monday (‘Kathari Deftera’) marks the start of the 40-day Lenten fast which continues until Easter Sunday. It is a day where Cypriots take to the fields to be at one with nature and have a vegan picnic. Traditional food eaten includes ‘koulouri’ bread (crusty bread covered in sesame seeds), olives, dips such as hummus (made with chickpeas) and tahini (made from sesame seeds), and a special sweet called ‘halvas’ made with sesame paste. Seafood that does not ‘bleed’, such as octopus and squid, is permitted. It is also customary to fly kites in the fields and play ball games.

APRIL

On Saturday, an image of Judas the traitor is burnt on a bonfire called a ‘lambraja’. At midnight, when the news is announced that Jesus has risen, the church bells toll and fireworks are set off. On Sunday another church service is attended, followed by a traditional Easter lunch of barbecued lamb.

For further information on these and many other festivals, contact the CTO.

Greek Orthodox Easter Fri, May 3 - Mon, May 6 Easter is the Orthodox Church’s main holiday. Women bake ‘flaounes’ (cheese scones) and ‘koulouria’ (sesame biscuits) to use up the eggs and milk not eaten during the fasting period. The Service of the Crucifixion is held on the evening of Holy Thursday. On Good Friday the ‘epitafios’ (Holy Sepulchre) is decorated with flowers and churchgoers walk under it during the evening service.

Kanika has always had an international following with hotel guests and property owners coming from far and wide across the globe, visiting Cyprus and all the island has to offer. To serve all customers, and in appreciation of new expanding markets, the Group employs the skills of multilingual staff. Kanika Developments in particular have recently had high demand from the Far East, hence our Asian customers now have their own Chinese speaking contact to welcome them to Kanika and provide details of the properties that may interest them. Loyalty Clubs Loyalty is a two-way street and at Kanika we like to reward our regular Kanika customers. We have two loyalty clubs: the Hospitality Club for Kanika Hotels guests and the Golden Key Club for Kanika Developments property owners. Both are free and both give exclusive benefits and privileges to members. Points mean prizes and with both club cards, members build up points as they spend on accommodation at any Kanika Hotel. They also receive a host of extras in their room including wine, sweets, tea & coffee, slippers and free internet. Discounts on spa treatments, dining and accommodation are also available to both clubs’ participants, making a trip to any of the fantastic hotel restaurants or spas a real treat. Of course, members of the brand new Golden Key Club will have their own Kanika property so we extend to them the full amenities of the hotels, giving them an ideal blend of home ownership with all the benefits of a hotel break. Ask at reception for full details.

Ithaki

In 2011, Mrs Isabella, Marina and Elli Karaolis, the wives of the Directors of the Kanika Group, founded the Ithaki Charity to educate and help people with dementia. The president, Isabella Karaolis, says that, “At present there are no facilities in Cyprus, so our aim is to collect statistics on how many people have the disease here, to train nurses and raise money for home care, then eventually to create a Day Care Centre dedicated to these people.” To date, Ithaki has put on fundraising events and talks by experts in the field, such as Dr Kostis Prouskas from Greece. The Association will continue organizing events, especially for Alzheimer’s Day in September 2012. If you would like to become an Ithaki member or volunteer, please contact the Kanika Group (Tel + 357 25 814 266), or simply support us by dropping your change in the Ithaki boxes at the hotel reception. Let us entertain you!

Every day in every Kanika hotel there is the chance to play, to laugh, to sing, to dance, to make new friends. And with an entertainment programme like no other, you can feel the fun from the time you wake up to when you go to bed with a smile on your face.

H

olidays with sun, sea and sand are wonderful, but today’s modern traveller wants more, and Kanika are here to give it. Each of the five hotels that encircle the coastline of southern Cyprus is designed to offer the best in leisure, sport and entertainment. With the family in mind, Kanika have compiled a printed programme of weekly activities for both adults and children to be used as a ‘pick and mix’ of holiday fun.

Sports news

KANIKA’S WEEKLY ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMME IS A ‘PICK & MIX’ PACKAGE OF HOLIDAY FUN.

Sport often comes top of the list as families have holiday time to share… so pick up a racquet to play at any of the tennis courts, kick the football round on the excellent pitches, shoot to score at water volleyball, Zumba and yoga together or maybe take up something different like French Boules or archery. “Every hotel has different aspects to their programme and facilities but the quality is consistent and all-engaging for the whole family,” says Claire Morris, Entertainment Manager for Kanika Hotels.

Venue variety Claire notes, “It’s difficult to name all the activities at our hotels, but one guest phrased it beautifully: “There is always something for people of all ages to do, especially for the kids who were in their element.” Our guests are really surprised when they see the extent of our facilities and services. For example, at the Olympic Lagoon Resort we have 7 swimming pools, at the Alexander the Great and at Elias Beach there is Havana, our customized entertainment area. Elias also has the Zodiac bar for cabaret and cocktails. In fact, every Kanika hotel has pools for our fitness and game activities, stages for showtime and gardens for playtime, all purpose built. And let’s not forget the different themed gourmet and gala dinners every night and our excursions to see this beautiful island.” Impressive indeed!

Kids unite This wow factor continues when kids get their first taste of the extensive kids clubs – The Crèche for 6 months to 3 years, ‘Little Monsters’ for 3 to 8-year-olds and ‘Teenz’ for youngsters up to 17. Each day is a new day to explore activities and games with programmes full of creativity, all supervised by qualified staff. Children adore the cartoon characters that greet them when they arrive, but which will they love the most? Will it be Gigi the giraffe, Lucas the lion, Zorba the zebra or Bella the elephant? And which themed day will they enjoy? As Claire Morris points out, “Pirate Day is fantastic when the story of Captain Blood stealing the treasure is staged throughout the whole of Olympic Lagoon Resort and the children all dressed in costume chase the pirate thief. Another favourite is Enchanted Day when they rehearse for a fairytale show that has parents weeping with delight.” Games, sports, films, parties, discos, arts and crafts are for the little ones at every Kanika hotel, while ‘Teenz’ at the Olympic Lagoon Resort has Kinect, gaming booths, an internet room and even their own teenage club and bar. There is something for everyone and as one guest remarked, “If the kids are happy, then so are we.”

The Coast is clear

The famous explorer, Jacques Cousteau, once said: “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” From clear waters to rugged coastlines, from glistening pebbles to ancient ruins, it only takes one trip around Cyprus’s beautiful shoreline in order to be captured in its net of unforgettable memories, forever.

I

slands are places of mythology, adventure, tradition and natural beauty; and Cyprus is no exception. Even the modern seaside resorts offer a magical mix of historical wealth and contemporary fun.

Agia Napa - Paralimni The 16th century Agia Napa monastery takes you back to the island’s Venetian past. For the oldest sighting in the area, visit the spot of the region’s sole Neolithic settlement, located in Loumbardi Bay in Paralimni. To the west of Agia Napa you can delve into history and appreciate the work of its ancient inhabitants in the 19 excavated tombs and crypts that make up the Macronissos Tombs. In the picturesque area of Liopetri you will find the mediaeval churches of Panagia and Agios Andronikos, as well as the remains of a Venetian watchtower. The golden sands, clean turquoise waters, and wild coastline of the south-eastern part of the island make this district irresistible. It proudly claims three records for the most Blue Flag Beaches per capita internationally, and the densest concentration of Blue Flag beaches per length of coastline worldwide. Hire a set of wheels and take the exit routes which lead you to the cliff-tops of the natural forest park of Cape Greco. Follow the dirt tracks and experience dramatic panoramic views of the Mediterranean waters beyond and secluded bays beneath. If you are fit and looking for a challenge, opt for a cycle or hike instead, and follow nature trails and footpaths

The Akamas Peninsula is a nature lover’s fantasy, where flora and fauna are equally protected, respected and enjoyed.

EXPLORE

No visit to Cyprus is complete without a firsthand view of both the sea and the legendary rock where the goddess Aphrodite was allegedly born.

around the craggy coves, making sure to stop at the famous cliff-diving spot along your way. For something a little more civilized, stroll along the paved promenade of Paralimni, or if you want to cruise along the shore instead, jump on a boat at the Agia Napa harbour. These floating tours will take you on an exploration by sea, giving you the opportunity to see parts of the rugged coastline you would not otherwise be able to access without getting wet. If you are looking for an aquatic adventure while keeping your feet on solid ground, visit the Ocean Aquarium, as well as the Thalassa Municipal Musuem of the Sea, both of which house inspiring collections and sea exhibits. At Konnos Bay, refresh yourself with a restful drink in the café at the top of the cliff with amazing views of the sea. If you have time, take a walk along the trails around the bay, which lead to sea caves.

Limassol The town’s medieval castle, which also houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum, is known as the site where King Richard the Lionheart married Princess Berengaria. On the eastern end of Limassol, visit the archaeological ruins of Amathus, one of the island’s principle ancient royal cities and port. On the western outskirts of the town lies Curium: ancient ruins, impressive mosaics, and a magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheatre. Curium is also home to one of Cyprus’s longest beaches. Hang-gliding off the top of the cliff above the sandy bay is a thrilling experience, with the bonus of a stunning bird’s-eye view of the entire coastline. Another coastal stretch worth investigating is Akrotiri Bay, which boasts a shipwreck that can easily be seen from the shore. This secluded beach grants you a magnificent sunset over the horizon. For more culture along the coast, venture to Limassol’s Municipal Art Gallery. Close by, the Municipal Gardens and Limassol Zoo offer relaxing spots to cool off in the shade of ageless trees. Limassol’s seaside promenade with adjacent bicycle path is the longest on the island, stretching miles 54 | K A N I K A

along the entire city. It is dotted with charming cafés where you can engage in the local coffee culture and people watching, or just relax while taking in the panoramic sea view. At the western end of the path, the Molos sculpture park invites you for a walk under the tall palm trees while observing outdoor art.

Pafos The island’s most celebrated spot, Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou), is located along the old Limassol-Pafos road. No visit to Cyprus is complete without a firsthand view of both the sea and the legendary rock where the goddess Aphrodite was allegedly born – a place that epitomizes Cyprus’s definition as the island of beauty and love. Further north in Latchi, a shady path leads you to Aphrodite’s Baths, the goddess’s natural cave pool at the edge of the Akamas natural reserve. For a taste of the sea on the western end of the island, visit the Maritime Museum or Pafos Aquarium. Make sure to enjoy the wide seafront promenade lined with cafés, shops and restaurants that finally give way to the picturesque Pafos harbour against the backdrop of the town’s Medieval Fort. The Akamas Peninsula with the largest nature reserve on the island is home to Lara Bay, the breeding ground of endangered turtles and a fascinating marine habitat. Glass-bottom boat trips along the coast offer you a fascinating close-up of this environmental treasure. Although Cyprus is truly a year-round destination, the island’s mood and character vary according to the season. Like the rest of the island, the coastal areas dress up for spring, with rare wild orchids, vibrant red poppies, and yellow mimosa blooms of acacia trees dotting the seafront and beyond. Whether you’ve witnessed the colours of spring, the splash of summer, or the autumn cool, you are very likely to come back for more…
