Branding and marketing play a very vital role for raw material manufactu rers who put in sustained efforts in popu larising their brands. Even indigenous comp anies like Reliance, Haldia, GAIL, IOCL, OPaL HMEL, MRPL etc. have put in significan t efforts in this regard. So also, manufacturers of PVC, PS and other engineering polymer companies. However, I feel, the same is not prevalent amongst machinery manufacturers. Some of the processing companies in the household goods sector and some in the pipe industry have put in efforts in branding, but very little efforts are seen in industrial products. Branding has not yet caught on amongst ancillary units.

Plastics industry which is growing at a rate faster than the overall economy, finds many players crowding the marketpla ce. Products have to get differentiated and get perceived as better quality, better performan ce, better service, distinct ‘feel’ and find a place for itself in the minds of consumers / customers. That is - it has to get recognition as a brand. Branding fetches better price. Marketing distinguishes a prod uct from being a commodity, positions it for wider visibility while giving the prod uct a widespread reach. Branding and mark eting pave way to global markets.

Effective communication leads to actions. Branding and marketing are powe rful tools that enable organisations to reach out to its customers and other stakeholde rs for a desired response. Feedback Each issue of POLYMERS Commu niqué magazine is better than the pre vious one! I can’t think of any other magaz ine which publishes suc h premium content, like interviews of CEOs of multi-million dol lar companies, technical interviews with the ma rket leaders and reviews of upcoming as wel l as existing market tren ds, and thus promo ting the ‘Make in India’ init iative.
The magazines’ covera ge of all the major plas tics and mould exhibition s is quite informative to the likes of its readers and advertisers. I’d call this magazine insightful, progressive with a global perspective!

K 2019 Gives a Clear Signal for
Responsible Handling of Plastics
K
the leading global trade fair for the plastics and rubber industry,
has drawn to a close in Düsseldorf after eight days on 23 October,
2019. The 3,330 exhibitors from 63 nations proved impressively:
plastics continue to be an innovative, indispensable material. But they also unanimously underscored the necessity of having operational circular economies along the complete material chain and, to this end, already
presented numerous concrete solutions. Companies struck a nerve
with people with this focus because the approximately 2,24,116 visitors
from 168 countries took great interest, especially in recycling systems, sustainable raw materials and resource-saving processes. Furthermore, K 2019 was characterised by a high propensity to invest as before. The
intention among the international trade audience to get perfectly geared up for the future with the latest technologies was clearly perceivable.
“K 2019 came at precisely the right point in time. Its enormous importance
for the sector is underpinned by its high acceptance levels all over the world. There is no other place the industry is represented so internationally and
completely as here in Düsseldorf every three years,” says Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, and explains, “Especially Photo credit: Messe Düsseldorf/C.Tillmann

Sustainability, Digitalisation and Speciality Films at the K 2019 Visitors to Brückner at
K 2019 witnessed new
line concepts for single-
origin packaging solutions along with numerous
new developments for
speciality films as well as unique digital services.
Innovations for the Demands of a Circular Economy Brückner Maschinenbau is working on a means to make films with the highest possible recycling capabilities producible on film stretching lines. The focus is
on mono-material film with superior mechanical and optical properties, which will be able to substitute previous multi-layer films made from different materials. These are ideal for the use in new, single-origin packaging and guarantee good sortibility in waste separation and optimal recycling.
Combination of BOPE and BOPP Production For the K 2019, Brückner introduced two completely new line concepts for the
production of BOPE films (biaxially oriented polyethylene). Film producers can
choose between a working width of 6.6 m and an output of 3 t/h, or a working width of 8.7 m and an output of 5 t/h. These are 5-layer concepts for an extended range of films.

Full Process Overview
With ENGEL’s New iQ Process Observer The iQ process observer is currently the only
assistance system on the market based on live data, which actively indicates changes in the process and counterproductive settings, helping to improve stability throughout the process.
A
t the K 2019, ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH started a completely new chapter
in the development of intelligent assistance with its iQ process observer. To date, assistance systems have been used to optimise
individual steps in the injection moulding process, such as injection and cooling. But the new iQ process observer goes several steps further,
providing an overview of the entire process for the whole batch. This makes
it possible to identify changes in the process at an early stage, allowing operators to determine their causes and find a solution more quickly.
The iQ process observer continually analyses several hundred process parameters across all four phases of the injection moulding process plasticising, injection, cooling and demoulding. The results, split into the
four phases, are immediately visible in an easy-to-understand overview on both the injection moulding machine’s CC300 control unit and the ENGEL e-connect customer portal.

Innovations for Highly Efficient Inhouse Recycling With some new EREMA developments and with
the products of its subsidiaries PLASMAC Srl and PURE LOOP, the EREMA Group also reinforced
its leading position in the inhouse segment. So EREMA’s new INTAREMA® ZeroWastePro system was presented at K 2019 for the first time.
ZeroWastePro is a compact solution, specially designed for PE and PP film production waste. Up to 100% of the recycled material can be fed back
into the main production process. The Austrian recycling machine manufacturer implements its
patented Counter Current technology and the equally proven Smart Start operating concept with
which all INTAREMA® machines are equipped. In
addition, components specially designed for film
applications - featuring optimised screw geometry and quality-optimising inhouse controls - which
are included in the ZeroWastePro standard, ensure a decisive increase in quality. For example, the newly developed automatic adjustment of the pelletising speed using appropriate parameter combinatorics enables the production of granulate in even more consistent bulk density and shape than before. The new ZeroWastePro

This has been made possible by the extensive standardisation of the system components and the optimisation of internal processes. Machine operators also benefit from the reduction in
primary raw materials used and lower disposal costs, which means that the investment costs pay for themselves in a very short time.
PURE LOOP, an EREMA Group subsidiary in the shredder-extruder technology segment, displayed

odorous substances from the granulate by the ReFresher. The efficiency of the ReFresher was
tested and confirmed in a separate challenge test using highly contaminated input material.
Because the ReFresher uses the latent energy of
the pellets preheated by the extrusion process, this system is also particularly energy-saving. This
recycling technology was also the decisive factor in the before mentioned joint project to launch
the world’s first approved shower gel bottle for the cosmetics sector, manufactured with
100 per cent PCR-HDPE. EREMA customers can now also test the effect of the ReFresher directly
at their own production plant. A compact and mobile version of this module has been developed specifically for this purpose.
Achieving a circular economy for plastics relies on higher proportions of recycled pellets being used
in end products - and increasingly in challenging consumer
goods.

in relation to Industry 4.0 applications. BluPort, a
newly developed customer portal, brings together decision-relevant information and service offers for
customers in a clear and user-friendly way. “Our BluPort online platform puts together in one place
a collection of intuitive service and data processing
apps that support our customers in quality control and, as a result, increase machine performance. With a focus on data security and customer benefits, we will continuously supplement and
expand the BluPort range in the future,” explains Manfred Hackl. The basic version is free to all customers. The full version with all the latest

T
he K show 2019 in Dusseldorf has been the opportunity for Piovan Group to showcase its newly developed products and engineered solutions for the plastics industry: from drying
systems to temperature control, from traceability of raw materials
to solutions for Industry 4.0, including cooling systems to provide complete turnkey solutions.
At the K show, Piovan Group launched the new GenesysNext, the innovative dryer for rPET. The new patented PETformance and
PureTech systems ensure that the GenesysNext is able to process any type or percentage of rPET material, guaranteeing the highest level of quality at the lowest cost per preform produced. This drying system is distinguished by self-adaptive technology that is
now also optimised for the treatment of recycled PET. The new
dryer can automatically manage the drying process by setting all the critical parameters: from the process air flow rate to its dew point value, from the residence time to the temperature, maintaining
optimum operating conditions even as hourly production and
initial temperature and humidity conditions of the plastic granulate
vary. The innovations that this new generation machine brings include more intuitive control and improved self-regulation.
At the K exhibition, Piovan Group presented important innovations also in the medical sector. Process consistency and reproducibility,
full traceability of raw materials and process parameters, extreme cleanliness: these are only some advantages that the new range of
Piovan solutions for medical applications ensure. Exacta, the new micro dosing unit, is able to feed the machines even with only one
granule at a time, whilst maintaining very high accuracy to meet requests that come mainly from highly technical sectors such as the medical sector and precision micro moulding. The medical
range is also complemented by machines suitable for usage in clean rooms, such as the Pureflo filter less receiver, which requires neither compressed air nor maintenance, and the emission-free DPA dryer.
Industry 4.0 is a key topic on which the main players are increasingly focusing. Piovan continues to invest in innovation, extending the
range of features offered by the Winfactory 4.0 supervision software.
At the K show, Piovan Group
launched the new GenesysNext, the

How to Survive a Recession
and Thrive Afterward
A Research Roundup In early 2000, a five-year-old online bookseller called Amazon.com sold $ 672 million in convertible bonds to shore up its financial position. One month later, the dot-com
bubble burst. More than half of all digital start-ups went out of business over the
next few years - including lots of Amazon’s then-rivals in e-commerce. Had the bubble burst just a few weeks earlier, one of the most successful companies ever might have fallen victim to that recession.

POLYMERS Communiqué l October - November 2019
Recessions - defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth -
can be caused by economic shocks (such as a spike in oil prices), financial panics (like the one that preceded the Great Recession), rapid changes in economic
expectations (the ‘animal spirits’ described by John Maynard Keynes; this is what
caused the dot-com bubble to burst) or some combination of the three. Most firms suffer during a recession, primarily because demand (and revenue) falls and uncertainty about the future increases. But research shows that there are ways to mitigate the damage.

Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life...
Avadhesh Manjanwal Vice President Sales
Yizumi Precision Machinery India Pvt. Ltd.
Being in sales function, weekends are not scientifically designed; however, whenever I’m not travelling, I like to go on a long drive at some remote location far away from the city, listening to old hit English numbers that reached the top of the chart during early 80s and late 90s - ‘We are the World song by USA for Africa’ is one of my favourite numbers. I have a special collection to be played throughout the drive that unwinds me and makes me readily charged for the coming week. Being far away from the city and close to nature gives me peace and a reason to get away from all hectic schedules of the past week.
Ankur Betai Director
Autotech-Sirmax India Pvt. Ltd.
Spending time with my family is the biggest priority on weekends. In all the hustle and bustle of our professional lives, sometimes we forget that nothing should come before our families. My other passion is reading. I like to catch up with my reading during weekends on my kindle. I find it a great way to unwind from the accumulated stress of the week. I also love to binge watch my favourite series during long weekends on Netflix.

I personally love adventure and have tried experiencing as many adventures as possible such as scuba diving, para gliding, para sailing, canopying, kayaking, indoor skydiving etc. Whenever I get an opportunity on any weekend, I latch-on to any of these ‘diving opportunities and more’. To put it simply, it provides me with an awesome and unforgettable experience; good is not enough, it’s just spectacular. The jumps are exhilarating…and charge me up for the upcoming working schedule.
Chethan Sharma Vice President
Corporate Development & New Business Initiatives Steer Engineering Pvt. Ltd.
Till about a year back, I used to enjoy spending weekends at home. But I’m loving the fact that things have changed this year. Once a month, I use the weekend to visit our avocado farm in my hometown - Sakleshpur. I have also started pursuing my passion for writing and use the weekends to create content. Oh, there is another thing I do once a month on Sundays... that’s catching up with live combat events. Now don’t judge me :)
Bikram Kishore Beura Asst. General Manager

Toshiba Machine (Chennai) Pvt. Ltd.
Getting up early morning at 5:30 am on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, has always been exciting for me. I wait for this moment from the start of the week. Early morning, I coach my son for football followed by my favourite long morning walk with 4 to 5 friends for almost an hour. We would enjoy tea and vada from a local vendor. That one hour is full of gossip, debate and sharing of thoughts on any topic, be it economics, politics, culture, work and the list goes on. Spending time with family and friends, cleaning my home are other priorities. Evenings are for society work and some time for charity. On some weekends, I visit Jaganath Temple and the beach in ECR Road, Chennai. I always keep weekends for myself and it’s been my time for years. POLYMERS Communiqué l October - November 2019

Perceived benefits of branding... Customer recognition, as expected, scored a numero uno position. A refreshing change was the belief that branding will help achieve business goals faster, which is very true. To most marketing pundits however, better margins, better buying price and
attracting talent are far more important, when compared to the responses received. In an overall situation, it seems that the branding benefits would be khwaish se zyada!

Smarter Realty With Green Technologies
POLYMERS Communiqué finds out what factors make UPVC a more responsible ‘change-

created the need for responsible business practises to become a part of

He talks about the past as things were in India
and how plastics helped shape the destiny of our
society over the previous 100 years. Here’s what he says... India today stands at 5 billion people and counting. Advances in medical sciences have made the lifespan of our people longer and healthier. There is ample food, water and work for our population.
But this wasn’t always so, it has been a hard fought battle and it was won due to a mix of astute statesmanship of our policy makers, innovative developments by Vikram Bhadauria Head Alok Technology Incubation Centre New Delhi
scientists and a giant leap of faith from our farmers.
At the beginning of the century, the country was fraught with food shortages, water
scarcities and loss of arable land due to the climate and industrialisation. This had led to heavy pressure on Mother Earth to produce more from less. The country
saw indiscriminate use of pesticides, fertilizers and other agro chemicals that led

to poisoning of the soil. A few decades later, the medical
fraternity blew the lid of the true cost of this poisoning
when a number of diseases became commonplace in the country. The food that we grew was laden with toxins!
It was a paradoxical situation wherein millions were hungry on one hand, yet agriculture was not profitable. Society
faced social unrest due to water shortages and cities were
unable to cope with the burgeoning migration of rural population. For a country whose 65% population depended on farm incomes, this was a perilous time!
Like in many other situations; the answer lay in the then much maligned, but humble ‘Plastics’!
Plastics in Agriculture Plasticulture, as the use of plastics in agriculture was called during those days, was considered as a recreational or an exotic practice limited to growing flowers and some vegetables.
A sustained effort from the policy makers as well as
agri scientists and engineers led to a rapid proliferation of plasticulture in the country. The immediate and visible benefits of this were: NN
Higher cultivation outputs per acre of farmland
NN
Lower
consumption
agrochemicals NN
of
water,
pesticides
and
Higher farm incomes for the farmers
Looking back we can see, how plasticulture transformed our society and the country for the better.
As agriculture became profitable, there was a reverse
exodus of people from the cities to the farmlands. Migrant labourers started moving back to their villages to re-start their agri practices. A slew of financial incentives from
the local government and technical support from agri engineers helped them reunite with their families and lead a life of dignity with comfortable incomes.
The cities emptied out and are comfortable and healthy living spaces as we see them today.
The industry faced an acute shortage of labour and it
forced them to automate and innovate. With cheap and abundant labour no longer the norm, inefficiencies from
the manufacturing sector were wiped out. Gradually, the
Indian manufacturing sector grew to a global powerhouse that it is today.

today. It’s a vast continent with a large, growing and youthful population which are highly concentrated in urban areas. Growth is not only fuelled by
its natural resources and minerals, but also by its rising consumer markets.
This gives rise to wide usage of plastics in industries like mobile, transport, industrial components, consumer durables, printing, infrastructure, packaging
etc. Countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa are still
importing most of it from countries like India, China, Germany, the USA,
Italy, Spain and Saudi Arabia. These countries alone have the population of 625 million people.
Currently massive investments are happening in the plastics industry. Plastics happens to be the fastest growing industry in most countries. This,
in turn, drives double digit growth in the polymer demand. The quest for plastics business never diminishes.

At K 2019 itself, over 2,000 sq. mts. of space was sold - as a result of which PVI 2020 oragnisers declared the event as 100% sold out!
Furthering its intent to bring overseas business opportunities for exhibitors, Team PVI finalised an agreement which will see a 250+ strong delegation from the African region (a key
market for Indian manufacturers) coming to PVI 2020. To further add to visitor delight, PVI organisers, along with its
Chinese partner CMEC, are creating a dedicated interaction

this direction, a special task force has been set up to focus on global business visitors, and PVI 2020 organisers have gone an extra mile by subsidising travel related costs of these global guests.

Q. Today Deep Plast produces 37,000 MT of filler and colour masterbatch. How do you see the next 3 - 5 years for your business? Since the time we began manufacturing colour masterbatches, we have continued to increase our production figures up to 50%
each year, at the same time maintaining the highest standards of quality as demanded by the industry. This has furthered our confidence in increasing our production.
To add, based on the market response, we positively expect to have a growth of 90 to 100% on production figures within the next 5 years as well.
Q. How was K 219 for you? Did you have a specific product launch for the global markets? For us, K 2019 was average, but we did have a good experience of meeting new people and seeing some new products in the market.
Presently, our team is focusing on current market requirements and hence we have not launched any new product this year, but are planning something by early 2020.
Q. The big challenges you faced in your business since your inception in 1992. How did you overcome them to achieve this success? When we started this firm, we were at what we would call ‘zero level of the market’. We did face a number of stern challenges, but we believe that our steadfast focus on customer satisfaction, quality and product development helped us win and retain clients. Early

and services in the India market. This has helped us a lot for confidently maintaining the quality
of our product; their guidance has helped us to
meaningfully achieve this end. Our experience with ECON is fantastic.
Q. What qualities of a vendor that you look for does ECON fulfill? There are plenty of vendors in this market and ever vendor says that he is the best. But, to us, the true
sign of a good vendor, is supporting the client when
there is some issue or complication. In this context, we have witnessed the best levels of service from
Team ECON. This made our business run smoothly.
They have also fulfilled all their commitments towards product development.
Q. How can a masterbatch manufacturer have product differentiation in such a competitive market?
we believe that branding plays a very important Branding is important because it not only makes
a memorable impression on consumers, but it also allows your customers and clients to know
what to expect from your company. It is a way of distinguishing yourself from the competitors and
clarifying what it is you offer that makes you the better choice.
One of the major components of a brand is a logo because, as the ‘face’ of a business, it’s what people instantly recognise. A professional logo design is simple enough to be memorable, but powerful enough to give the desired impression of your company.
Q. A business approach that you strongly believe in... A few of the approaches that we believe in are: NN
