Sustaining

formerly Managing Director at Windmöller and Hölscher India Pvt.

Sustaining business momentum is a complex task in difficult times and is not entirely up to the management or the enterprise as market changes have the greatest impa ct. What we can do in difficult times, and in general as well, is to respond to market chan ges very quickly. It is important that the peop le remain motivated and put in their best. Trans parency, empathy, appreciation and rewa rd are the fundamental needs to achieve this. Another important aspect is to control credi t and bring receivables to the lowest possi ble level and cut costs in all possible areas, while plugging every leakage and wasteful expenditure. Adapt rapidly and keep the organ isation lean.

Arvind Mehta

We are in one of the most challenging times for the Indian plastics proce ssing industry. With lockdowns, migrant workers have left. It was only by June end that manufacturing started. Q1 was lost. Financial issues were significan t. Due to plastics packaging, there was demand. Industry witnessed some recovery; polymer prices were a little stead y and labour was returning at a higher cost. Then came a devastating price rise (50 to 80% over the last 5 months) of polymers; thus, huge press ure on finances. Companies have not been able to pass this hike to customers . Exports will be severely hit. Business mom entum will be slow for MSMEs till these issues are stabilised.

It is for the first time in modern history that demand, supply and workforce have all been impacted at the same time and that too not in one region, but across the world . As Winston Churchill said, “Never let a crisis go waste”, companies need to look to improve internal business processes to reduce the cost, flexibility in product line and increase productiv ity to sustain business momentum in this perio d of crisis. The mantra is to provide ‘higher value at a lower cost’.

Q. The biggest upcoming opportunity that you see in the post COVID-19 period for your business growth / diversification. We are seeing a huge opportunity in replacement

which

occupy major part of the bathrooms. We are

market leaders in this range and definitely we will be able to work on diversification.

On pipes and fittings front, we are shortly investing in western and eastern markets with

plants for producing in these regions. This would enable us to reduce the transportation costs, thereby being competitive. More importantly, for our pipes, we are now one of the NSF approved

manufacturer in India; this has been certified by IAPMO.

Markets are developing due to investments from government in the North East. We find this as a big opportunity for affordable housing and our products are apt for this segment.

Q. Do you see yourself realigning or changing strategies to deal with the challenges currently faced? Please share an example. The biggest challenge faced in production today is the aspect of following the norms laid down as

regards safety and social distancing of manpower in the plants. We started our production with

which had a good market requirement and we could generate sales due to these products. We

Q. With the mission of shifting from the metal-based fittings to the virgin grade polymer-based fittings...what do you consider your biggest enablers and biggest hurdles in the acceptance? How is the progress so far? We had made a move of shifting from metal-based

fittings to virgin grade polymer-based fittings in the year 1997 when we started Watertec. The main

idea was to give the end users / customers a lead-

free, dust-free and leak-free products. We have been successful gaining 80% market share over the

period of last 23 years. The acceptance was high in the tier 2/3 cities, but the metros and major cities were always for brass fittings and chrome

finish products. So, we focused on manufacturing products in polymer for the rural and tier 2/3 cities in the country. It became a household name in the country due to the important factor of leak-

proof and quality of the raw material we were

using. Metal fittings, which are available for the

unorganised sector, was from a poor-quality brass and this segment was existing in metros. We To know more, please subscribe to Polymers Communiqué at

PLASTINDIA 2022 would also be a showcase event

they would take it positively as a build-up towards

organisers, we are certain that at Plastindia 2022, there would be better facilities and value for the exhibitors and visitors.

Q. Which do you think are the sectors that would boom currently and beyond the pandemic?

Q. Your message to the exhibitors at PLASTINDIA 2022.

Plastics has played a very important role in the

historic

ongoing pandemic; hence, it is obvious that the

healthcare sector shall register good growth and continue to do so in the future. A sector that is

very vast and is equally important, especially with

an increased focus on hygiene, is the packaging sector which shall register good growth. Another sector, in my opinion, that would do well is the automotive sector. Post the pandemic, people will be hesitant to use the public transport system and

prefer travelling by their own mode of transport. The small- and mid-size vehicle segment shall gain growth. The recycling industry has been dominated by the informal sector and is quite efficient; however, formally it needs to be more organised and has great potential to become one of the fastest growing sectors. Soon this is going to be a mandate and a need-of-the-hour. This will also provide an opportunity to add value,

to provide ‘wealth from

India Has the Potential to Be

42

POLYMERS Communiqué l October - November 2020

Q. With over 40 years in the industry and being a wholly family-owned business, please share your learnings with the gen-next. If we take the analogy of a human being to a family-owned company, the soul is the vision, and philosophy of the company as represented by the family and the body is the structure and organisation of the company formed by the team and processes.

For the journey to the desired goal to be successful, both aspects are essential. In my

experience, family-owned companies have historically not paid much attention to the second aspect and, therefore, many with great companies, with great ideas and vigour could not develop beyond the 2nd or 3rd generation.

Q. The newer / bigger approach that you see in the post COVID-19 period in your industry.

“Digital printed

mould elements with conformal

cooling through 3D metal printing has given us flexibility

in tool design and has enabled to

optimise product

cycle times, leading to cost savings and productivity gains for OEMs and tier one suppliers,”

shares Drumil J.

Gandhi, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.

New business conducting habits involving less of physical travel and more transactions on the digital platform will lead to more and more localisation. This trend reversal had already started much before the pandemic and COVID-19 only accelerated this trend as a further catalyst.

Q. Having mastered and established yourself as a pioneer in the automotive sector, what are the other sectors that you now focus on? Automotive industry itself is a highly evolved technological and process-driven industry. Therefore, having been part of it for over 35 years, we feel we are ready to progress and diversify into other sectors such as aerospace and other modern sunrise industries.

Q. With an expertise right from concept to production, as per you, which is the most versatile material and why? With over 1,000 different plastic raw materials available in the market, it continues to represent the most versatile material for all kinds of consumer and industrial products. The clear advantages of this material are its great strength to weight ratio, easy processibility, availability in alloy or composite forms and potential for full recyclability.

Q. How do you see yourself adding value to the home appliance business with your products and services? Consumer products and home appliances today are becoming more

aesthetically driven, while also becoming more and more lighter in weight. Hence, the potential for plastics and, therefore, injection tooling industry.

Q. Is cost considered as the most critical component while choosing a mould vendor? According to you, the finer aspects that need to be considered while choosing the right mould... The purchase managers should start looking at the overall value that a mould designed and fabricated rightly and optimally brings, instead of the so-called market price. Injection mould

making is a unique industry in the sense that for the same application, a tool can be designed and manufactured differently impacting various product aspects such as consistency in part aesthetics, processing cycle times, mould maintenance and quality of service life over the life

cycle of the end product. Therefore, a purchaser must be able to see all these aspects of a long-term serving product, like a mould, before choosing a vendor.

Q. With a number of businesses bouncing back, what is your current capacity to cater to industry demand that comes with challenging delivery timelines? To know more, please subscribe to Polymers Communiqué at subscriptions@polymerscommunique.com

has brought humanity to a common ground, paving the way, I hope, for better avenues of collaboration and appreciation,” elucidates Dr. Sanjay Arora, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.

Q. What do you consider as the biggest milestone for Suburban Diagnostics since its inception in 1994? This is a tough question to answer as there have been so many milestones worth mentioning. For me, being able to add value to each customer and

patient is how we measure our success. Adding value to one customer at a time has resulted in us growing from a single small laboratory to one of India’s leading diagnostic chains. This in itself is a matter of pride for all of us. Recently, being the first laboratory in India to be approved by ICMR on

milestone for us, having tested over 5,00,000 patients till date and counting.

A Big Opportunity “As regards the positioning

of plastics, the global impact of COVID-19 has highlighted the valuable role of flexible

packaging and film products

in terms of safety and hygiene. This has also provided a

balanced evaluation of plastics relative to sustainability versus banning products altogether,” opines Gary Hughes, in

the New Normal Q. The newer / bigger opportunity that you see in the post COVID-19 period in your industry. At the outset, this crisis has given plastics a major persona makeover; there

is now a widely held view that plastic products are safer and cleaner than

the reusable solutions being touted lately and are at the forefront of the fight to contain the spread of contagion. Gone are the days when plastics were considered to be a slang only in terms of environmental leakage and ban. Plastics are valued in healthcare because of their versatility, sterile nature, cost effectiveness, ease of use and utility in new applications and solutions. Plastics will continue to offer exceptional solutions in the future.

question to CFOs or financial decision makers of an organisation, they would more likely want a real value of this growth in their

balance sheet. The question is, how do we interpret these sustainable numbers and

have the right formula to gauge our targets and actuals?

At Calco Poly Technik Pvt. Ltd. (Calco),

we initiated this discussion in FY19 and identified 3 important environment factors that we can address immediately and

POLYMERS Communiqué l October - November 2020

Electricity This is the most pressing need of any plastics processor. We have addressed this issue in two ways - LED lights and solar power plant. To reduce water consumption, we implemented double strategy of water recycling and rainwater harvesting. On an average, this process will help conserve almost 2,000 litres of water every day.

We have installed over 400 LEDs of 19 W instead of the conventional tubes of 38 W, with same luminous / lux. On an average, with 8 hours of use in a day, this has helped us conserve 26,000 kWh in a year. Not just this, it has also helped us conserve almost 14 tonnes of CO2 in a year, roughly equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 666 trees!

Along with this, we plan to install around 10% of our installed

electricity load (roughly 200 kVp) through the solar power plant. In India, the average GHG emissions for 1 MWh or 1,000 units of

electricity generation is about 0.88 tonnes. While GHG emissions for 1 MWh or 1,000 units of electricity generation with solar is about 0.08 tonnes. Therefore, with solar, 0.8 tonnes of CO2 will be saved for

every 1,000 units of electricity generated. This is equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 38 trees in a year.

Electricity is the most pressing need of any plastics processor. We have addressed this issue in two ways LED lights and solar power plant. This has helped us conserve almost 14 tonnes of CO2 in a year, roughly equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 666 trees!

With our installation, we plan to save roughly 240 tonnes of CO2 in a year, roughly equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 12,000 trees!

Product Innovation

Not just capital investments, even by product development, we

can help conserve the environment. Calco has introduced CiLON’s

range of industrial compounds which consumes partial post consumer industrial waste without compromising on product

specifications. This has helped us convert over 10,000 MT of waste

till date into valuable high-quality compounds for the automotive and industrial goods industry.

Our ultra-modern laboratory, spread over 10,000 sq. ft. with all the polymer testing equipment, will help develop new innovative, light-weighting solutions for the automotive and lighting industry. Through the solar power plant, we plan to save roughly 240 tonnes of CO2 in a year, roughly equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 12,000 trees!

One of the recent developments in the sustainable space has been replacement of paint in the outdoor automotive applications, using

nano technology with polyamide carrier resin. This helps automotive companies reduce the overall cost, weight (upto 15%) and negates the

hazardous process during manufacturing of applying paint on plastic to meet aesthetics of the metal body parts in exterior applications.

Summing Up If we have to answer our financial experts on cost savings, we can

easily say we can save upto 10% on our overall energy costs and

water conservation that will help us cover costs of almost 5% of our unskilled workforce. Doing so, we are saving CO2 equivalent to

planting 12,666 trees per year! Similarly, we all can be proud of this

fact that we are contributing a little to our planet.

While these are just initial ideas that are in the implementation phase, there can be many other ideas relating to transportation, air and

recycling which can be worked upon to make our manufacturing facilities more meaningful and safer for our future generations.

Issues and Challenges in Accomplishing

here are mainly two issues that define the problem of sustainability of plastics. One,

plastics into land and water is an issue that is receiving serious (and adverse) attention in the scientific literature,

Industry has been fiercely advocating the 3 ‘R’s formula, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The first two ‘R’s are desirable to reduce unnecessary or

unsustainable consumption. The industry has often projected ease of mechanical recycling as one

of the unique virtues of plastics. Thermoplastics do have the capability of being melted and

reprocessed; however, recycling does not solve the problem; it only postpones the problem. Every recycle degrades the property of the virgin

polymer and after a few recycles, the polymer

Growing Importance of Business Relationships for Building a Profitable Future We must recognise that days of ‘lone wolf’ strategies are passé. Time has come to forge partnerships, alliances, collaborative

Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life...

Sudheer Narasipur Sales Manager

Imerys Minerals India Pvt. Ltd.

After a hectic week, it’s a pleasure to unwind and relax during weekends. What better it can be than doing what you like the most. For me, since I started working as a salesman, my pet activity is biking. Unlike in the past, bike riding is what I did for a living; now, it’s more of a passion. So, weekend drives or short drives during weekdays (morning 5 am to 10 am sort) keeps me filled with adrenaline and keeps me going. Apart from this, the other weekend indulgences include drawing, watching MotoGP and Formula 1. A long trip to Himalaya is something in the pipeline. Hoping to tick this off too.

Kamalesh Gupta

Managing Director

Colorplas Polyadditives LLP

Sustainable change always begins at home. An unfaltering and long-term commitment leads to impact that lasts for generations. A thousand small steps, taken collectively and with persistence, leads to a big change. We may not be physically together this year, but let’s ensure that does not become a deterrent in our journey towards accelerating social change. This year, I celebrated Global CSR Day by taking a pledge towards the cause of plantation for a greener tomorrow. I am committed towards planting at least a single sapling every weekend.

In my free time and on the weekends, I am very passionate about my workout at the gym. With the COVID hitting us, I have put a simple gym bench and weights at my house and with my favourite music on the system, I love to do my workouts.

Janardhan N. Bhat Director

Shini Plastic Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

Spending my leisure time in the garden is a hobby that I enjoy since my childhood. I spend a couple of hours every weekend with my plants in my garden. Gardening as a hobby is a great stress buster. Fresh air and the fragrance of the flowers refreshes my mind, keeps me relaxed and rejuvenated. It helps me prepare for the coming week’s hectic activities. I feel happy and filled with positive energy when surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants.

Varun Kedia Director

Allied Group of Companies

My weekends usually are family-oriented. Due to lot of travelling, I am unable to spend much time with my family during the week. So, weekends after spending half a day in office and reflecting on the work done in the week and upcoming schedules, I go home and spend time with family. We go for a drive and we usually have our weekly movie night with kids and some popcorn. Post that, I try catching up on one of the books that is trending or has caught my interest. Sunday evenings I try to plan for the week ahead so that there is a direction to the week.

RESEARCH REPORT

Product Design and Business (PDB 2020): A POLYMERS Communiqué Survey Results Declared

‘Designed to Deliver’, this is a phrase that caught our fancy and motivated us to conduct this survey. The audience was niche, but the topic important. In the prevailing circumstances, an integral part of the perceived ‘new normal’.

Busting some myths...design is not optional, design is not an expense, design is not about just making things look better,

design is not all about complexity! So, what is design and why is it so important, and more so, now? This critical process parameter of business needed some more opinions. Thus, this survey. An objective achieved by POLYMERS Communiqué!

POLYMERS Communiqué in its customary elegance, went about to serve this industry amidst prevailing challenges. This is so because the readers of POLYMERS Communiqué are a genre of its own, and we believe they deserve quality and

timely information; at a time, they need it the most. A point worth highlighting here is that this survey was conducted in

May 2020, right at the peak of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The optimism of the answers will go only northwards as the time progresses and COVID-19 regresses!

GREY MATTER

Contribution of plastics often gets overlooked by negative narratives

surrounding this material. It needs deeper introspection to declutter the discourse and focus on issues that need global attention - food for everyone on this

planet and food for thought for plastics.

I

n the middle of the pandemic of the century, we celebrated ‘World Food Day’ on 16th October,

2020. The event shone spotlight on challenges

confronting humanity on the global food system.

While an estimated 2 billion people are obese, close to 690 million people go hungry every day. The reasons for this are many. At the core of this dichotomy also

lies colossal losses and wastage of food - losses in the supply chain and wastage at consumers’ end.

The system needs fixing. This covers the entire chain

of production, distribution and consumption. While
