With advancements in transportation, digita l communication and normalisation of trade relati ons between different countries, the ‘world became flat’. This led to products of human as well as industrial consumption getting produced in different parts of the world and then getting moved to the converter or consumer base d on its category. Thus, smooth funct ioning of ‘supply chain’ became a critical factor for any operation. Lockdowns imposed during COVI D pandemic period made migrant workforce to move out of industry centres, which led to the shortage in working hands and thus affec ting the production volumes. High price of polymers due to rise in energy costs and polym er supply shortages are disrupting operations of plastics processors and operating margins have shrun k. Most operations are run with the mind-set to survive through the present situation for bette r days seen on the horizon. Some Tier II part producers have indic ted exiting business.
Machinery manufacturers are hit as steel supplies are starved due to freight carrier operations being affected by container shortage. Electronic systems used in drive and control units are in short supp ly as supplies of semi-conductors from China are throttled. Overall, the machinery delivery lead times have stretched. The plastics industry would have shown better performance, but for disruption in supply chain.

The
Prof. (Dr.) N. C. Saha
Global supply chain is disrupted acros s sectors. These disruptions have led to the current global shortage of semiconductors, and now the supply disruption of another critical category of materials is plastics. The additional cause of disruption in the supply chain is global shortage of containers for export and import, leading to high cost of freight. Since March, 2020, due to the pand emic, constraints on supplies of raw materials - especially polye thylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and monoethylene (MEG) - are leadi ng to factory shutdowns, sharp price increases and production delay s across a range of industries. The effects of these material short ages are very tight supplies, historically high prices and delivery delays. The demand for plastics continues to surge, especially for food packaging, automobile components and PPE (personal protective equipment). Supply disruption is the major cause leadi ng to closure of micro, small and medium scale (MSMEs) companies in India. There is a huge challenge in findin g opportunities and solutions on how companies in India and globa lly can continue their production amid the supply chain disruption s. NN The most obvious approach is to diversify the supplier base. NN Increase inventory to address short ages. NN Embrace circular economy i.e. recycling and circularity would definitely change the game for plast ic manufacturers.
formerly Director at Indian Institute of Packaging
It is well known that supply chain mana gement is an integral part of most busin esses, including plastic packaging. In fact, it is an impo rtant component for a company’s success because it ensures the customer’s expectation in terms of delivery of goods on time at the right location, right quantity and in right condition up to the level of the customer’s satisf action. Supply chain disruption becomes most apparent when an unexpected event occu rs, causing significant repercussions for market partic ipants either at one stage of the supply chain or usually for participants along the chain.
COVID-19 pandemic has cause d a huge disruption in supply chain causing shortage of plastic raw materials resulting in increase of price . Moreover, it has also made an impact on the productio n of plastic packaging materials. The cascading effec t of disruption has not only slowed down the productio n process, but also its delivery, sales, promotion and marketing of goods. In addition, it has also creat ed a huge problem of unemployment. In order to tackle this problem, the manufacturers looked for altern ative materials to avoid any kind of such chaotic situa tion so that it will not have much impact on the overall business growth and development.

POLYMERS Communiqué l October - November 2021
BIG CHANGE
Q. What have been the key drivers for your initiative of ‘sustainable packaging’? To begin, let us understand the meaning of the word ‘sustainability’. To some, the word sustainability means something against plastic. Sustainability actually means the
way you use resources that come from the earth and the sun. It means that you
are able to recycle the materials or end products as much as possible and if not, then you should be able to convert it in
a way that it can become a biologically degradable material. This is what I would
say sustainability would mean. But here is a word that is more concentrated on a green washing approach.
De-limiting Sustainability “Technologies, all of it are known, but its applications is what changes the entire game; technology undisputedly helps business become more sustainable,”
emphasises Mahendra Patel, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.
Coming to the question as far as plastics and
packaging is concerned, we have our plastic machinery that can handle big volumes and a variety of polymers. With recycling in mind, mono-materials are now becoming
increasingly important and so are multilayers of the same family of polymers. With
available technology, mono-materials can meet requirements of barriers as required.
With our MNC customers like Kellogg’s
Customers of today are finding it increasingly difficult to work with multitude vendors for a given solution system. Again, I take this also as a part of sustainability. A single vendor solution is better aligned and optimised...finally a more sustainable solution.

and Hershey’s, who are very conscious of their image in this regard, we have taken
trials on our machines on a number of
materials, considering their instructions,
demands and, of course, sustainability. Hershey’s have already given us a repeat
order. Hershey’s, infact, launched their
products in India on Mamata machines and now they are ordering their second line
from us. This is giving us global mileage.

keeping the service going,” explains Vinay Agarwal, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.

Q. What are your thoughts on the supply chain disruption and plastics due to the pandemic and the very fluctuating demand of the market? What happened with the pandemic was totally
unprecedented in nature and scale. The industry needed to react fast. We too had to
be agile in our reactions since we were right
there in the middle catering to essential
services like sanitisers and hand washes, which is where the packaging industry was, right at the centre of all the action.
Looking at it differently, it was also very thought-provoking and motivational for us to fathom all what we could do, even in these challenging times. There was a
lot of repurposing of existing assets to make them capable of catering to the
demand which we were seeing. For To know more, please subscribe to Polymers Communiqué at

Disruption in Supply Chain and its Impact on Plastics
W
ith the prevailing perils of supply chain, the business was difficult for some and very difficult for the others. Things changed dramatically and the volatility made conducting business even more challenging. With no precedence to this, companies
evolved their own ways to navigate through this truly VUCA scenario! To help the industry,
POLYMERS Communiqué took onto itself the task of capturing some of the opinions to help the readers to latch on to what may seem relevant to their own business. POLYMERS Communiqué continues its charter to be a business enabler for this industry!
The content that came out was absolutely thought-provoking. Put to the wall...businesses challenged themselves. Some innovations, some ‘jugaad’, some out of the box approaches,
some very classical, some aggressive, some with thought leadership, some action leadership...the agenda was clear...to rise above the storm!
Different things worked for different companies; this compilation (that covers opinions of a very diverse cross-section of our industry) will be treasured by many for a while, with every sentence savoured in its true sense by the reader to re-analyse the prevalent circumstances, and see if
another strategy just might work better to come out of this ‘pandemic and fluctuating market demand driven situation’ with minimal discomfort.
Another objective achieved by POLYMERS Communiqué! A true demonstration of leadership!

the pandemic induced restrictions on mobility, the

ince the outbreak of the pandemic from March,
2020, there were many challenges faced and
innovations happened in the field of supply

Plastics have saved precious human lives providing safety and packaging solutions for increased hygiene. We were
allowed to operate both injection moulding and extrusion plants to supply machines for essential industries in the field of medical and packaging solutions.
To continue machine building during the lockdown,
our team has helped the suppliers to get permissions for their team to travel and plants to operate. After the
first wave slowed down, business picked up well for
plastic machines and there was an increased demand for material in all categories.
The first major disruption in the supply chain started
from August, 2020 in terms of steep price rise in copper, followed by steel. The balancing act of ensuring timely
supplies, taking into consideration the business interest of our suppliers, was indeed a difficult task. Capital goods machines are executed with delivery times ranging from
3 to 6 months putting a lot of pressure on margins. To compensate for this increased cost pressure and to earn
decent margins, elimination of various non-value-added activities were carried out. Strict control on expenses was the need of time. After the second wave in June, 2021, there were more challenges in

In the recent past few weeks, there has been a turmoil in

It’s not about the question of rising prices only, it’s about

However, we are bound by our commitment to serve our

Accordingly, the new sources were identified / analysed /

Our products are designed on the modular concept; this design advantage helped us in optimising the inventory.
We rationalised and well-planned our inventory of local
parts as well as for import parts to address the delays and
spiralling costs. We focused on reducing the contingencies to contain costs. Since we receive 60% of orders from our
existing customers, we decided to temporarily moderate our marketing expenditures as well. With all these kinds
of imperative decisions and more, we tried to address the adverse effect of supply chain disruptions. As we all know that metal prices

Staying Competitive During Supply Chain Disruptions
Businesses can stay competitive by being alert, proactive, flexible, agile and able to leverage
technology and supply chains. They can also mitigate the effects of supply chain disruptions
to a great extent by developing strategies to address unforeseen situations. Companies need to focus strongly on ‘Supply Chain Risk Management’ in their overall planning.

A
rabPlast 2021 truly was one of the first few comeback events for the plastics industry, if we can take the liberty of calling it the post-pandemic era! The exhibitors
were excited, the visitors were eager and the organisers heaved a happy sigh of relief when the event was thrown open at 11:00 am on Monday, the 15th of November, 2021.
The days that followed witnessed high quality, purposeful buyers from a number of
countries! Detailed discussions and active roundtables became a common sight. An exhibition would always want the ‘right crowd’ rather than just ‘a crowd’, an objective well achieved at ArabPlast 2021!
I must congratulate the Al Fajer Team for taking this big step forward to get the event going and set the tone to make the event even larger than the pre-COVID times in the coming years!
This feature will highlight more specifics on the show, followed by details on a few companies who exhibited there and have their advertorials here. Dubai, organisers of ArabPlast 2021. He further

market for the health and medical sector for
commodity plastics is forecast to grow at a rate of 2.53% until 2027. There are 1,158 plants slated to come online in the next nine years, primarily in Asia and the Middle East.
Likewise, the market for engineering plastics in
the MENA region too is expected to grow due to the multiple uses and benefits, and we are
optimistic that ArabPlast will create the much-
needed impact as being the first global exhibition for petrochemicals, plastics, packaging and rubber post-pandemic to contribute for the restoration of the industry.
While technology and innovation formed the basis of the mega event, the show also served as a networking platform.
“After months of being confined to our homes,
ArabPlast 2021 offered innovative solutions, latest
technologies and knowledge-sharing to open up new avenues for collaborations and business
opportunities,” said Talal Al-Awfi, OQ Group CEO. “We feel proud to be the leaders in the Middle East to attract the industry audiences,” he added.

n the August - September, 2021 issue of POLYMERS Communiqué, I discussed
some fascinating features of transparent and elastic wood; properties engineered in wood by a deeper understanding of the meso-porous structure of wood.
Wood is made of three constituents, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. These constituents have been widely explored as fibres, thermoplastics and building blocks for a variety of bulk and fine chemicals. Of this, cellulose is the most prevalent
component found in the cell walls of plants / wood and is the most abundant
naturally occurring polymer amounting to 1.5 trillion tonnes of annual production. Apart from being almost inexhaustible, cellulose possesses many useful properties,
such as, hydrophilicity, chirality, biodegradability and its ability to form diverse semi-crystalline morphologies. Cellulose in the form of cotton fibre is an ancient material familiar to humans since the beginning of civilisation. Emergence of simple techniques to extract nanocellulose from widely occurring natural sources such as Dr. S. this material as nanocomposites, biomedical products and food coatings and is at the foundation of an emerging new industry.

composite materials such as wood, cotton, hemp
a chemical raw material for the past one hundred led to the first man-made plastic ‘celluloid’. John Wesley Hyatt, a printer from Albany, New York responded to a call by a billiard supply house
announcing a prize for replacing ivory in the
billiard ball with a more affordable material. John Wesley Hyatt began by examining collodion, a
nitrated form of cotton fibres. He discovered that nitrocellulose mixed with camphor and slightly
moistened with solvents can be compressed to a
hard translucent solid. He called this new material celluloid, which ironically did not prove useful for
making billiard balls. The road to fame for celluloid was created by a chemist Henry Reichenbach who
discovered a method to make films out of celluloid. George Eastman put this film into the first Kodak
camera in the early 1890s. This, in turn, hastened the era of motion pictures and ‘celluloid’ became
synonymous with movies. Flammability of celluloid
caused many a movie theatres to go up in flames in the early part of the motion picture industry. Later a more stable derivative, cellulose acetate,
replaced celluloid in these applications. However, celluloid found a lasting legacy. It became the
material of choice for the manufacture of pingpong balls, an application that lasts till today!

Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life...
Dhvanit Shah
Head - Strategic Business All Time Plastics Pvt. Ltd.
Adventure sports and the outdoors is all that I can think of doing on any given weekend when I’m free. Among my favourites are taking my kayak out on lakes, exploring all the forts in and around Maharashtra and going on long cycle rides with friends. The remaining weekends are packed with reading, trips and family time. I think that weekends are super important to rejuvenate, de-stress and get prepped for the next week in the grind.
Pranav Bhalara Director
Balaji Multi-Flex Pvt. Ltd.
Normally I don’t have a weekend off as we work on weekends too; but whenever I get a chance, I go to my farm where I am growing Miyawaki style forest. Furthermore, I watch a movie with my kids and I prefer to spend time with my family. I am also an avid cooking person, so whenever I get the time, I prepare dishes for my family and friends.

Ravish Kamath
Founder / CEO
Big Bags International Pvt. Ltd.
I believe weekends are the secret weapon in professional success. I spend my weekends participating in a combination of family activities, sometimes running errands for them, with a dash of creative activity to exercise the right side of the brain! I go to functions with friends and family, and even get involved in the local community. It’s good to disconnect - I have found even just a walk without the phone is liberating; water rafting is another activity that I sometimes indulge in. I advocate a ‘tech Sabbath’ at least from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening. I would like to hit Monday ready-to-go which is why I opt for the kind of weekend that rejuvenate, rather than exhaust or dry me out. Being with those I love gives me mental strength, and a combination of it all has made me a better strategic thinker than if I’d just worked all the time.
Hitesh Panchal Managing Director
Swift Auxi Technik Pvt. Ltd.
Weekend for me is all about reconnecting with my inner self. My morning starts with an energetic yoga and meditation session, followed by breakfast. I then spend my time reading books and spending the whole day with my family and loved ones doing activities that we all love like playing games, cooking and then a lazy afternoon and relaxing evening watching movies and TV shows that are on my wish list. Finally, it’s ending the weekend with planning for the next day.
Denzil K. Antony Director
Technorobotic Machines Pvt. Ltd.
Being an automotive enthusiast, I like spending my weekends going on long drives or going off-roading with my group of like-minded enthusiasts exploring new trails around Mumbai. Sometimes we just go for a quick breakfast run discussing cars.

FINE THREAD
Work-life balance has
become quite the buzzword today; but what exactly
does it mean and how does one go about achieving it? Read on to know...
A
fter a long time I had the opportunity to take some time off my routine work
and travel to my native place with my family. My extended family also joined me there. After spending some days together, I realised how important it is
to press pause on the race you are running, take a step back for a while, and relive
your childhood memories. The trip was extremely rejuvenating and revitalising for my emotional and mental well-being! More importantly, I also realised that people’s
thought-process becomes very positive when their mind is relaxed as opposed to
when it is engaged in the chakravyuh of everyday chores and challenges. Although it is imperative that we face these challenges and not run away from them, the
approach we adopt to tackle them with a positive frame of mind makes all the difference. As the race to become better in a competitive environment continues, with opportunities presenting themselves through creative and unexpected
avenues, we need to maintain our work-life balance as best as we can with
good planning. It is also important to approach all personal plus professional responsibilities in a better and more effective way, especially when fulfilling
bigger responsibilities. Having a clear idea about the goals we want to achieve within the limited time frame available to us and keeping a positive mindset really
helps in achieving personal and professional goals. Cradled in the lap of nature at Kumta, a coastal town well known for its virgin beaches, seafood and friendly people, I decided to pen down all such reflections in the form of this article.
Why Work-Life Balance? Shirish V. Divgi Managing Director, Milacron India, Ahmedabad

It is a known fact that maintaining a work-life balance contributes to a healthy work environment. It helps reduce stress and prevents burnout at the workplace
and also improves efficiency and productivity. Every other day, newspapers report
about youngsters facing stress issues, sometimes leading to their untimely death.
This should not be neglected. This is not to say that we take a lackluster approach

Work-life balance has become the buzzword in
today’s times, thanks to a large millennial workforce and increasing work pressures. The millennial generation is cognisant of the importance of a
work-life balance and expects employers to make provisions at the workplace accordingly. Given that
the millennial generation will constitute 75% of
the workforce by 2025, employers must take these demands and expectations seriously.

and productive workforce. But what exactly does
begin to get complicated. A work-life balance means different things to different people. The
concept of a work-life balance has been constantly evolving over the years and it might be helpful for
employers to understand what it means to different employees by conducting workshops or oneon-one discussions on a regular basis.

BIG QUESTION
The Recycling Dilemma
The industry must strike the
right balance between the time, effort and resources expended to produce a homogenous
waste stream and the returns obtained from recycling.

lastics have become ubiquitous in modern life. All human activities
involve the use of plastic products. This new generation material
has brought productivity gains, resource efficiencies and consumer
convenience. The benefits of plastics in the food and healthcare sectors
have been substantial. However, these are often eclipsed by the sight of
solid waste pollution caused by the careless discarding of plastic products after use. These are mostly the short-use packaging and convenience
plastic products. While there are technological, social and economic factors
responsible for this crisis which has assumed global proportions, public discourses on the problem often miss out on the root causes. Even though numerous scientific studies have established a lower environmental
footprint for plastic products, the world continues to grapple with the challenges of mounting waste. A logical step would be to reduce waste S. K. Ray Hon. Secretary & Member of Executive Committee, Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE), Mumbai
