„WE COMBINE TRADITION WITH MODERNITY, DESIGN WITH PERFECTION.” HANS PETER POMBERGER
JOHANN VON GOISERN “Johann” refers to the first name of Johann Pomberger, the founder of our company. The second part of the brand name refers to the company’s location in “[Bad] Goisern”, which is also the birthplace of its founder Johann. The name “Johann von Goisern” as such emerged in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s and has since then always been used to describe part of the optical frames manufactured in our company in Bad Goisern.

The beginning of the story
JOHANN POMBERGER
Establishing a legacy
WATCHING A LEGEND UNFOLD Johann Pomberger was born in March of 1937 in Bad Goisern. Starting from a young age, he always had a strong sense for creativity, which showed mainly through his love of music at first. His interest in the world of optics was sparked in 1952, when he started his apprenticeship at the “OPTOS – Optische Erzeugung GmbH” in the nearby Bad Ischl. He eventually returned to this company and gained important experience as acting factory manager. In 1984, Johann started his own business in the trade of “manufacturing and processing of optical frames”. After growing the company to 22 employees in 13 years, Johann transferred the management to his eldest son - Hans Peter Pomberger – in 1997. Since the family company’s rebranding to “POMBERGER Goisern GmbH” in October of 2015, Hans Peters son Jürgen Pomberger is acting as manager alongside his father, spanning the company’s history over three generations.

handMADE IN AUSTRIA Although there have been many innovations and changes over the years, one aspect about us always stayed the same: “Johann von Goisern” still stands for highest quality and exceptional design, manufactured in Bad Goisern. To this day, the brand and its products live and breathe the creativity and ideas of its inventor – Johann Pomberger. Our company is still firmly grounded on the values of its founder Johann: Relocating or even moving to another country is completely out of question.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT! Under this slogan Johann von Goisern presents a colourful and ‘different’ collection: Thanks to a special in-house lamination technique, solely developed for our frames, we can combine up to 20 different raw materials in a single frame. Through the pairing of materials with different colours, textures and transparencies we can create breath-taking colour-combinations, which Johann von Goisern is internationally renowned for. Currently the collection counts over 450 frames, each being manufactured using our special multi-layered lamination technique.

Inspiration from nature and wildlife
Inspired by the nature and wildlife of our region, the designs for Johann von Goisern have always been made by ourselves. Every shape and colour-combination is chosen carefully, so every colour, model, and every new collection is harmonious, but also goes along with previous models
DESIGN
MATERIAL CUTTING All Johann von Goisern frames are solely made of natural cellulose-acetate, which consists of 97% cotton flakes.
Probably the most important step: Here many different raw materials get refined into wonderful colour combinations.
LAMINATION
MILLING We use 5-axis CNC mills to shape our laminated colour blocks into fronts for our frames.
13
Metal needles are shot into every temple, to provide it with additional stability and a connection point for the hinge.
CORE SHOOTING
HINGE INSERTION After milling, every front gets equipped with fitting hinges.
Through a little heat and a fitting template, every front gets brought into shape.
CURVING
RUBBING To guarantee a smooth surface for our fronts and temples, both spend many hours in multiple, different rubbing barrels.
15
Before giving each frame its finishing touches, every front must be united with its temples.
SCREWING
POLISHING Every frame is polished by hand multiple times, however long it takes to fulfil our high standards.
Where one journey ends, another begins: After 3 to 4 weeks of manufacturing come to an end, every Johann von Goisern makes it way from Bad Goisern to its proud new wearer.
FINISHING
INSPIRATION The uniqueness of every Johann von Goisern frame is affirmed through the certificate card, which is part of every case. The JvG Club guarantees long lasting inspiration, which goes far beyond the first impression.

„MY BIGGEST DESIGN INSPIRATION ARE THE LANDSCAPES OF OUR REGION … … although certain foundations never change, the forests shine in new colours every autumn, snow and ice reshape the mountains every winter, and plants awake in new formations every spring. Exactly this combination of stability and innovation is what I want to capture in the design of Johann von Goisern.
