FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

T

he academic year that ended with graduation in May was exceptional in so many ways, none of which would have been possible without the generous support of our alumni, parents, families, and friends. Our students excelled across all of our programs, as we recognized academic scholarship, celebrated New England tournament teams, enjoyed thriving arts and theatrical events, and continued to foster a uniquely strong sense of community. We spent a great deal of time in the second half of the year developing and preparing for an exciting, forward-thinking new academic daily schedule and a truly distinctive student life curriculum, both of which are in place as the early weeks of the school year have turned to fall. A talented new group of faculty members have brought their energy and enthusiasm to campus, and a terrific ensemble of new students have leapt in to fill the gaps by those whose time on the Hilltop ended four months ago. We renovated about a dozen of our classroom spaces in an effort to move toward more flexible learning spaces where the students can be more at the center of the learning experience. In short, it was a banner year. We have accomplished much with the amazing– and growing– support of so many people who are connected with Pomfret School. Our program is beginning to look a bit different from those of our peers; Project: Pomfret, Q.U.E.S.T., and 80 minute course blocks are only a few examples. At the same time, I assure you that our relentless commitment to individual students and to the centrality of community in this place will not dissipate. We remain steadfast in our commitment to the advisory program and to the individual connections built between students and the adult members of the School community. Your support of Pomfret allows us to pursue our vision to become a recognized leader in learning, teaching, and innovative program design. At our very core, we are working to ensure that our graduates are prepared for college and for the world beyond. Thank you for your dedication to Pomfret and for supporting our faculty in everything we do to create the very best student experience possible. Sincerely,

J. Timothy Richards P ’15 Head of School

Thank You, Joe A Classmate Takes the Reins, Leads the Charge

L

ast October, the Pomfret community was hit hard by the loss of Joe Robichaud ’15, a second-year senior who passed away during October break near his home outside of Quebec. Joe was a beloved student, classmate, friend, and roommate. Recruited to play hockey, Joe brought to Pomfret his immense talents as an athlete. But more than being a leader on Christopher Jackson ’15 the ice he quickly became a leader in the community. He was his own man; tattooed across his back were the lines from William Ernest Henley’s poem Invictus:

I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. In his short time here on the Hilltop Joe earned a spot as a respected athlete (wearing jersey #10 ) and as a senior prefect. He clearly valued his Pomfret experience. In the serendipitous scheduling of chapel talks, he got a chance to speak to the community a week before he died. In the spirit of how he viewed life, Joe showed himself to be a true Griffin — passionate, respectful, and caring. “We should do the right thing,” he announced, “and be kind to one another because we never know who among us is having a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year. Spread love. Smile. Laugh. And don’t be afraid to thank the people around you for what they do for you.” In the aftermath of his passing, it did not take long for a plan to emerge. With a momentum that mirrored his own boundless, open-hearted energy, Joe’s schoolmates took his advice to heart: they worked collectively to thank him for all that he had done for them. By the end of the year, Pomfret classmates, families, and alumni had raised $11,369 for the Joe Robichaud Scholarship. One hundred percent of the members of the class of 2015 donated to the cause — a giving phenomenon almost unheard of, for any age group. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student — someone, everyone agreed, like Joe. Behind it all, as the unofficial master of the parade of classmates and friends, was Chris Jackson ’15. For Director of Advancement Melissa Bellanceau, a Form Dean for the Class of 2015, this was a special moment to watch seniors rise in the face of adversity. “Chris led the charge,” she said. Not only that, she added, “he worked with a committee of classmates to craft the criteria for future recipients of the Scholarship.”

“As the cheer goes, #10 on the ice, but always number one in our hearts.” A conversation with Chris is a tribute, not only to Joe, but to Pomfret as well: “One way to remember Joe and what he stood for,” Chris begins, “is to help someone similar to him in character and ideals succeed as much as he did, and to help them carry on the mission that Joe started. He always tried to make himself a better person by making others better people.” Whose idea was it to establish a scholarship in his name? To be honest I can’t quite remember if it was one person’s exact idea or a group’s idea. I know for sure that [School President] Rachel Godfrey and [Vice President] Nick Fulchino played huge roles, but [classmate] Kailey Cox also worked very hard during the entire process as did many others. I have been told Mr. Dempsey might have first suggested it. What would you like scholarship recipients to know about Joe? Anyone who knew Joe, from a casual friendship to his roommates, will tell you he was a kind and gentle soul with so much to offer Pomfret, his hometown, and the world. I hope that his jersey will remain fixed within the hockey rink for seasons to come and that Pomfret students will always remember our lost Griffin. As the cheer goes, number ten on the ice, but always number one in our hearts. How do you want Pomfret to remember Jersey Number Ten? My hope is that Jersey #10 will be a reminder of not only Joe himself, but of the kind of person he strove to be and wanted all of us to be. Joe had a good heart, a warm smile, and was a loving man. He loved Taylor Swift, working out in the gym, all things cats, more working out, and above all he loved his friends and family. Before his life was tragically cut short, Joe managed to touch so many lives and bring so much good to this world. Just know that simply put, Joe made us better people. Is there something about Joe you think people responded to? It doesn’t surprise me one bit that families and parents did donate. Joe would affect people who he’d never even met. He had a heart of gold and the greatest of characters. I think that is what donors responded to. Joe just had this positive effect on people’s lives. He was a great hockey player, a buddy to sit next to in class, a fun-loving roommate — the kind of kid who always gave you a hug, someone who constantly saw the good in everything, a loving brother, son, and friend. Joe is missed, but will never be forgotten.

Vision that

SHARPENS with age

“There are many exciting and challenging initiatives that will position Pomfret as a leader in education innovation.” — Jim Seymour, 50th Reunion Committee

Fifty years in, the lessons and rewards of a Pomfret education continue to generate gratitude, engagement, and more than just a passing glance at the future of the School. Responding to a group that collaborated tirelessly and enthusiastically in planning and organizing their 50th Reunion, the class of 1965 made a commitment to having an impact on both the face and future of Pomfret.

“W

e have just experienced a wonderful 50th,” wrote committee member Jim Seymour at the close of the Class of 1965’s weekend celebration on May 1 – 3. The weather was “superb,” and the turnout of twenty-seven of his classmates (nearly sixty percent of the class) earned the group the Spirit award. According to Jim, all were “inspired by the direction that Tim Richards is leading the School, and the many exciting and challenging initiatives that will position Pomfret as a leader in education innovation.” They also heard about two historically bold directions for the School, fifty years apart, underscoring Pomfret’s strong tradition of innovation. At a VOICE presentation on the history of diversity at the School, former Headmaster Jay Milnor and John Irick, the first student of color to graduate from Pomfret, shared memories of the experience. Jay referred to his decision in 1964 to recruit students of color as “the right thing to do.” Afterwards, both Jim and new Board Chair Justin Klein remarked on how, in 2015, that decision continues to resonate and educate. At the opposite end of the timeline the class heard from Grauer Institute Director Jamie Baker on the many new initiatives sparked by the strategic plan and enabled by the Grauer momentum — among them Project: Pomfret (now a colloquial 3.0), and the international experience partnership with the Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE). This December, thanks to this forward-thinking partnership, fifteen members of the sophomore class of 2018 who will be enrolled in a year-long history course entitled “Global and Sustainable Development” will travel to Costa Rica where, according to the course description, the students will be able to come face to face with the issues of “energy, conservation, agriculture, and urbanization in this developing Latin American country.”

As impressed as they all might have been with Pomfret’s characteristic attraction to the flame of academic innovation, more impressive was their show of support for the School, and the vote of confidence in the strategic plan’s Vision of the Pomfret Graduate. Part of their reunion class gift, which totaled just over $3 Million (and represented sixty-three percent participation), has been earmarked for the Class of 1965 Endowment Fund, intended to support the Grauer Institute, Project: Pomfret, and the international experience. “The endowment,” said Jim, “is a permanent endowment, reflecting both a spirit of generosity and commitment to the advancement of education at Pomfret School.” This was also a tremendous group effort, and a model of collaboration blended with camaraderie. A force to be reckoned with, the members of the committee, Derry Allen, Billy Cotter, Skip Hastings, Murph Henkel, Justin Klein, Jim Seymour, and Buzz Yudell, identified not only a need, but worked together to establish a new level of alumni support. They sent the message, one that will resonate in the years that follow, that true vision sharpens with age. A tremendous tribute to the School and its legacy, this is a gift far greater than the sum of its parts. It also reflects the lasting impact of thoughts, words and deeds that have kept alumni connected to each other and to Pomfret over the years. It keeps them current; as much a part of the future of the School as they are linked to its past. With this gift, they have established a vital connection, not only to the Pomfret that was then, but also to the Pomfret that is now, with a clear line of sight on the future.

THE INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION:

GRATEFUL TO BE “Part of a Meaningful Mission”

O

ne of the newest members of the Board of Trustees, Jimmy Chan is the Director of Design Research, Planning and Permitting with Shanghai Disney Resort. Despite the distance from their home in Shanghai to a dormitory on the Hilltop, Jimmy and his wife Sherry are no strangers to Pomfret. As the involved parents of Daniel Zheng ’17, their global perspective is also inherently parental. In Daniel’s time on the Hilltop, Jimmy says, “he has transformed into a more mature and independent young man, with good thinking and social skills. He has learned to plan for his future, and be responsible for his own goals.” In his Board biography, Jimmy describes himself as a “dedicated mentor in the training of the younger generation of China.” He serves on numerous boards, and describes his vision for the youth in his native country saying, “Exposure, experience, training and mentorship supports the young generation with a solid foundation for their future success.” His extensive experience in leadership roles offers a perspective not unlike the principles reflected in the strategic plan’s Vision of the Pomfret graduate. On the importance of supporting Pomfret, Jimmy says, “This is more than just a school, but a truly international community of teachers, students, parents and alumni. Since all of us have benefitted so much from Pomfret,” he adds, “I feel the strong desire to give back as much as we can.” He says that he and Sherry “share the same vision of Pomfret. We really appreciate the efforts that the school makes.” He went on to say, “There is an old Chinese saying, ‘It takes ten years to grow a tree.’ We understand that a sound education program takes a long time before it takes root.” “We are grateful,” he adds, “to be part of this meaningful mission.”

A Committed Young Alumna

UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF

Making a Difference

M

olly Hanson ’00 stands out as a committed alumna who believes in paying it forward. A financial advisor based in Boston, Molly has given generously of her time in the past four years as a PACES (Pomfret Alumni Career Exploration Series) presenter, and makes herself available for career mentoring with Pomfret alumni. “I am where I am today because of Pomfret,” she explained after speaking at the Career Expo event in 2013. “It’s more than a school; it is a community.” When asked recently about what resonates from her Pomfret experiences, Molly’s answer comes not so much from the past, but from the present: “Being back on campus and visiting Pomfret somehow elicits memories and stories that would not have otherwise come to mind. For me, this campus is a very powerful place.”

That power is energizing. For her 15th Reunion year, Molly not only brought in a substantial matching gift to the School, she worked to rally her classmates to step up to the plate. She is clearly, in the words of Director of Advancement Melissa Bellanceau, “a young alumna making a big difference.” When asked what inspires her to give, Molly says she has begun to see an arc of giving that has matured as has her own relationship with Pomfret. “At one point,” she says, “I gave to Pomfret because it felt like the right thing to do. Then, I gave to Pomfret because I habitually recognized and appreciated the relationships, education and life lessons for which the School laid the groundwork.” And in the past few years, she recognizes that the why of her giving has reached a new level. “Now, I give to Pomfret,” she says, “because I am excited by the thoughtful, innovative ways the School is planning for what I know is a very bright future.” 35

SUPPORT ROOTED IN

“Pride and Joy”

“I

t is through giving to the faculty, athletics and arts that we can ensure future students of Pomfret will have the same opportunity.” Maureen and Chris Soutter, parents of Chris ’17, are leadership donors and active volunteers enthusiastically carrying on the legacy and example of father, and grandfather, Thomas Soutter ’51, who continued to support the School until he passed away in 2013. Thomas’ wife Virginia carries on as an active donor.

“As my husband and I drove home from our first parent’s weekend, we reflected on what a wonderful effect the School had on our son Chris. We realized that Pomfret had figured out how he ticked. They really dialed into his way of thinking, speaking and reacting to different situations. We credit this wonderful observation to the outstanding faculty and the commitment to match the efforts of student-led involvement.” “Pomfret opened its doors and accepted Thomas Soutter, class of 1951, and offered the same support and educational opportunities that our son now has. It is through giving to the faculty, athletics and arts that we can ensure future students of Pomfret will have the same opportunity to grow. There is not a conversation with Chris that goes by that we don’t smile at each other with the pride and joy that he is growing mentally, physically and learning with all that he is encountering at Pomfret.”

“Thirty And Counting”

A

former trustee remains faithful to “the school that I enjoyed so much in the 1980s.”

When asked about his long-term commitment to the Hilltop, and how his years of Board service make a great example of alumni engagement, former trustee Willy Walker ’85 says he doesn’t think that fully explains it. “I believe the fact that I have not missed a single year of giving in thirty years is probably a better story.” Raised in a family culture of giving, Walker first gave to Pomfret his freshman year in college. “My parents taught me to give back to the institutions that change your life,” he says, “and Pomfret has always been one of those institutions.” Since then, he says, his giving modus operandi has been, “Give every year, regardless.”

“There were clearly times when I was just beginning my professional career that I didn’t have substantial cash flow. But I felt it was important to give every year, so I did — sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller.” As a Pomfret Trustee, Walker saw firsthand the importance of annual giving. “Unrestricted, annual giving is critical to the annual budget of the school to maintain competitive tuition rates and provide as much financial aid as possible.” As an engaged alumnus who maintains his connections with each of the schools he attended (he currently sits on the board of St. Albans School and is quite involved with both St. Lawrence University and Harvard Business School), Walker sees Pomfret as “a fantastic institution with outstanding leadership.” “I have several friends with children at Pomfret today and I hear nothing but rave reviews about the school, its culture, and the educational experience. I believe there is no better endorsement of a school than current parents. And as such, I will continue supporting the school. Who knows, maybe I’ll skip a year after my 50th reunion!”

Consistent, Planned

SUPPORT: MAKING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND THE TRANSFORMATIONAL

I

n addition to being a consistent Pomfret Fund donor, this past year Brooke Brown ’87 took her support a step further by choosing to include Pomfret in her estate plans. “I grew up in a family where the value of a private school education was of the utmost importance,” she says. From her father, Brooke learned the “imperative” of giving back. “I was the first in my family to go to boarding school, and attending Pomfret was, without question, one of the best decisions I ever made. I had an amazing four years at the School and many more fond memories.” Brooke’s goal in making a planned gift goes beyond that of helping to offset the costs of running an independent school. After graduating from the Hilltop she went to Trinity College, and earned her Master’s in Education from Manhattanville. Having taught at a number of independent schools, she understands how a planned gift can make the difference between the traditional and the transformational. “I now know firsthand how valuable annual and planned gifts are to the health of an educational institution. Many people don’t realize that tuition costs alone do not cover the many programs offered. Both [types of giving] are critical,” Brooke adds that gifts are also vital to “attracting faculty who are passionate about what they do. I participate in annual and planned giving so that Pomfret can continue to provide as many young people as possible with the wonderful educational experience that I enjoyed.”

Pomfret Experience

T

he inspiration to give is not always immediate, nor do we always see it coming. For Amy Salerno DeGruchy ’79, her Pomfret Fund gift grew out of gratitude from two seemingly unrelated sources, one distant and one near and very dear. Amy is grateful for the education she received on the Hilltop. “I worked hard and became well-rounded at Pomfret,” she says. “And it propelled me forward.” Yet more than the academics, her gratitude is for the quality of life that was part of her experience on the Hilltop. “There was always a teacher that was there for you, even if it wasn’t your advisor. No one was made to feel like a square peg in a round hole.” There was, she says, “a spirit of flexibility that allowed students to flourish. Pomfret worked it out for me,” she says. The teachers “worked with me and inspired me.” She particularly remembers a semester spent reading “French novels, studying painting, and learning about art history.” “I gift for the teachers,” she says.

Yet Amy, a physician who practices family medicine, also gives for that intangible feeling of close community, a group of former classmates and faculty with whom she remains in touch. And as a catalyst for her gift she says, “I see Pomfret as the family I had in high school, literally and academically.” They are, in a sense, one part of a wide-ranging family that she considers part of her busy life today. Until recently she was a single mother raising two adopted daughters. The other side of her family, and one that she celebrates in her Pomfret Fund gift, is her recent marriage to Glenn DeGruchy, who is joining her ready-made family and has “made the commitment” to raising her daughters. Years apart, but somehow she sees Pomfret, her friends from there, and her happiness with her newly completed family as all interconnected — and all a part of her grateful journey. At the end of the day,” she says, “This is what makes your life.” 45

For the “Backbone of the School” The inspiration to make a difference in the classroom leads to a five-year, $100,000 pledge in support of Pomfret’s faculty.

M

arina Purcell ’89 has always felt strongly that the strength of a school begins with its teachers. So strongly, in fact, that several years ago, she and her husband Tom established a foundation through which they could support education by having an impact on the quality of the classroom experience. “We give to Pomfret,” Marina says, to provide support where needed, whether it be through scholarships or teacher support.”

“Every time I read my Pomfret Magazine or talk with Pomfret friends,” she continues, “I am inspired by all the people involved with the Pomfret community.” Marina adds that her education, which began on the Hilltop and continued at Georgetown, not only left her grateful for the work done by her many committed, “gifted” teachers, but also educated her on the components of an outstanding education. “The teachers I had at Pomfret,” she recalls, “engaged me at school in a way that compelled me to do well in all my classes and encouraged me to challenge myself. I truly believe faculty support is critical to building a complete school and the teachers who are able to foster confident students, capable of imagining, creating, and communicating in the world around us, are the backbone of that school.” Given in celebration of her 25th reunion at Pomfret, Marina’s gift has served as a source of inspiration for future classes. Building on the strong tradition of reunion momentum, her gift set a high bar for future classes to aspire. In this time of change in the educational landscape her generosity has proven instrumental in providing educational opportunities for teachers to reconsider what they do and how to ensure the student is at the center of the learning experience.
