Publishing this magazine has been a whirlwind of life-changing experiences. Pompasette has been blessed to work with young creatives who are passionate about their craft and constantly seek to push the envelope, thereby inspiring themselves and you, our readers. This issue brings with it many new additions to the Pompasette Brand. Our new website which will continue the discussions, provide updates and giveaways for our readers; our digital services department, which will give our advertisers increased mileage and our readers more engagement; our Pomp TV episodes which will begin in the new year with amazing hosts and of course, the first of the annual Pompasette Weekend. This issue peeps inside the lives of Esther James – the Sexy Chef who makes some of the prettiest cakes in the region; Adaeze, a young talent who daedreams of greatness and a day when conventional Barbados would not be perturbed by her bleached out, natty Mohawk with a fade. We also get a glimpse of fitness competitior and winner, Melissa Burrowes. Her discipline is admirable. The geeks also have their space and it was an honour for us to feature young techies who have been featured by Forbes and
Bloomberg and put them on the same page as young Barbadian techies...the world really is small. New strategic partnerships include the Dr. Girls – a group of fantastic doctors who will be working with Pompasette in an effort to educate pompasetters on better health and our new, resident fashionista Linn C. Man, Monster or Mouse? We hope you pass that test! For those of us who aren’t up to speed with social media trends, we shot the beautiful Tyra Trotman for a quick #selfie tutorial to bring you up to speed. On our most serious note, we look at the definition of beauty and challenge both Pompasette and other publications to address the issues which encompass the definition of beauty in our society. Debt is also a problem many people are dealing with in this economic recession our country now faces. We address this in a quick and easy-to-understand way. So that’s it folks. A BIGGER, BETTER, EVOLVING Pompasette! I’d like to thank the team, which has been AMAZING. When I thought of the idea of Pompasette three years ago, it seemed impossible. You made it possible.
Have a great read Pompasetters!

We first met Esther at the cupcake shoot with the Miss Barbados World contestants for our last issue. We wondered, “Is this girl naturally this sweet?” Pompasetters, the answer is yes. We have seen Esther model for Project Runway winner Christian Siriano; been told specifically by her PR Manager, “Please understand that Esther does not only do cakes” and subsequent to requesting to feature her, saw Instagram posts by Rihanna of her services to her. We sat and shot this
Haha, Thank you! The title “The Sexy Chef” is stemmed from my many encounters with international clients during villa rentals. They usually compliment both me and my food. It’s all about presentation. I thought of it especially since I create really sexy food :)

Gone are the days when being a geek meant simply an affiliation with anti-social propensities, questionable fashion sense and an unusual obsession with animĂŠ. These days, being a geek has been sexified and many want to get on the techie train. We spoke to local and international bonafide tech stars about their favourite trends.
My hot tech gadget is the iPhone 5s. Why? Everyone and their grandmother knows I’m an Apple evangelist, so this should be no surprise. What makes it stand out for me are the camera, fingerprint scanner, performance and the ecosystem; it’s a top notch product. 1

In my opinion, the biggest shifts are the opening up of banking and money. Currency is beginning to move online and outside the realm of government control, and this is sure to have a massive impact in the years to come. The other change is the rapid advancement of fintech (financial technology such as square and mint.com). Comment | Reply | Report as Spam

I am intrigued by the concept of wearable devices. We are seeing the on set of devices like Google Glass, Smart Watches etc. The slide towards less devices to carry, all fused into one tiny wearable device is one future I earnestly look forward to. The tech trend that actually most intrigues me is DIY (do-it-yourself) hardware. Back in the day inventing any kind of hardware technology required a lot of money (like millions of $$), super deep technical knowledge and probably a research lab. Today it has become a lot cheaper for a single individual anywhere in the world to invent something. In my spare time, I have been hacking hardware. My friends and I have been working on this super secret security device built for Africa .Despite much iteration I have spent just about $1500 on it. I know it is still a lot but compared to the millions of dollars it took to make many other great inventions, say, the light bulb, it is pretty cheap.

Drone delivery? Cool tech wrapped in red tape. Amazon recently revealed plans to offer a delivery service via automatic drones which could deliver packages of under 5lbs to your door in 30 minutes or less. Beyond fulfilling consumers need to have every thing in an instant, there are some 7
practical applications of drone usage like emergency support, environmental monitoring and traffic surveillance. Comment | Reply | Report as Spam
I find the Bitcoin system intriguing; I’m especially anxious to see how authorities will seek to regulate it. To me it has gained sufficient traction at this point to be successful. Private investors have begun making investments into the system’s infrastructure, like exchanges and mining entities. I believe Caribbean people may already be using Bitcoin for online payments; I came across Barbados’ name when researching access points to the system. There’s also a new Caribbean system started by Barbadians which is called

BEAUTYREDEFINED A seven year old went to school with corkscrews in her hair and was reprimanded for wearing an ‘ugly’ hairstyle that was apparently only suitable for inside the house after a Sunday shampoo. This got us thinking. What images of beauty are we teaching our young girls and boys? More importantly, what images do we have of beauty?
Pompasette deems it our responsibility to shine some light
on extremely beautiful women who would not have been highlighted by traditional standards and media. We want to use our voice to empower. We want to celebrate women: women of different ages, races, classes and experiences. We want to pay homage to the concept of individuality so that hopefully, that said seven year old girl, whoever she is, may browse our pages

TUTORIAL
Oxford Dictionaries’ word for 2013-2014 is ‘Selfie’. A selfie is a self-portrait photograph taken with a digital camera with the intention of uploading it to a social networking site such as Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. The word “selfie” was first officially mentioned in an Australian chat room on September 13, 2002, to describe a picture taken by a drunk man after falling and having a cut 1cm
5
deep through his bottom lip. Um…ok. Subsequently, the word has evolved into the pompasetting realm of total fabulousness. As a result, Pompasette got the young, trendy, Barbadian singer Tyra Trotman to give a much needed selfie tutorial to bring our readers up to speed.
4
1. Know your best angle and work it! 2. Don’t be afraid to take 100 selfies in order to get that perfect shot. 3. Try to get your face in the shot and not just

your boobs. 4. Slight duck face is cute. Full blown duck face? #NO. It would make you look like you had a bad lip job. 5. Don’t wear the same outfit in all your selfies. Same outfit but different events? NOT CUTE!!!
12
6. Smiling with your eyes is sooo sexy. However, squinting is a NO. It’s sure to make you look like you forgot to put on your glasses. 7. Brush or floss before taking a shot of that million dollar smile. It’s up to you but in my opinion, one of the worst types of selfies is a ‘food in teeth’ selfie. Eww.
6
8. Gun fingers are soooooo overrated and is a

sure way to make you look silly. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
8
9. The most pathetic kind of selfie? The crying selfie. Seriously?! Who is going to believe your cat JUST died and you’re so heartbroken, when you JUST uploaded a whole set of selfies? 10. Sigh…Selfies in front of a toilet, next to a toilet
9
or near a toilet? THESE ARE THE WORST! Let us not even discuss if one has forgotten to flush. 11. Wash your face or powder your nose. No greasy fishcake faces allowed! #aintboutthatlife 12. DO-NOT-ATTEMPT-THE-BALLING-SELFIE!!

The taste Maker
There’s a way to drink, and then there’s the right way to drink.
Kurt Haynes Brand Manager Stansfeld Scott
There are things to drink, then there are the things to drink. From beer to wine to cocktails, you could easily slam back haphazardly whatever is in your cabinet or offered at the bar. But a real drinker not only knows what to drink, but also how to POMPASETTE and make it impeccable. Then there’s the little issue of still commanding the room after you’ve had a few (there are tricks for becoming a pro at that, too – but we will handle that in another issue). Today, we do the basics – Rum, Vodka, Scotch, Gin and Cognac – and offer our suggestions.
Svedka Colada Vodka:
This really tastes as good as it looks! Whether it is the decadent, tropical blend of vodka infused with all-natural flavours of creamy, fresh coconut or the taste of ripe, Indonesian pineapples with a hint of juicy Caribbean mango, this WILL be a 2014 favourite! Perfect for the BYOB, a Sunday beach lime or the at-home cocktail mixer, Svedka Colada is awesome and the price is recession ready!
Courvoisier Rose: A lot of people
are turned off by the strong taste of cognac. We won’t mention names but a lot of people can’t handle their cognac either! Unlike most cognac’s, Courvoisier Rose offers a smoother, refreshing taste since it is made from both Courvoisier Cognac and premium, French, red wine grapes. Enjoy the notes of blackberry, black currant and a touch of cherry, vanilla, honey, and vinepeach flavours . We assure you that you will immediately see why Courvoisier Rosé can easily be enjoyed sans the mixers!
Glenfiddich Single Malt Whisky: Upgrade to a Single Malt in 2014 and for the rest of your life. Enough said! We recommend Glenfiddich – the world’s most awarded. The 12yo is the signature malt of the range. It is complex with elegant, rounded flavours and notes of fresh pear and subtle oak. The 15yo is a pioneering whisky of character. It boasts of intense complexity with warm spice, honey and rich fruit flavours. The 18yo is produced in small batches and has notes of spiced apple and robust oak. Each batch is of unique and exceptional quality and deserving of a FULL POMPASETTE ENDORSEMENT!
El Dorado Rum: Discover the liquid gold of the Caribbean by enjoying
a range of elegant mixing and sipping rums of unequalled quality and variety. Consistently winning the highest international awards and recognized as top of their class, this is indeed a unique pleasure. Each rum possesses its own character, flavour and distinctively rich aroma – a process unmatched by any other distillery on the planet. The rum cream is divine also! Look out for the El Dorado Rum Flight in select Barbadian restaurants over the next few months.
Hendricks Gin:
An extraordinary small batch Scotland-made gin created with a fully restored 19th-Century Carter-Head still which bathes the ingredients in vapors instead of boiling. A unique blend of botanicals, including rose petal and cucumber. Remember, gin is in… so feel free to mix a couple of exotic gin based cocktails at home. If that should prove too difficult, visit a bar!
