Portrait painting is the type of painting where a person is the subject of the art piece. Through history, portraiture was used to memorize the wealthy and the powerful. Portraiture existed as a means to capture the subject even before a camera existed. Portraiture was also an important way to maintain state and family records. Over a period of time, it became a norm among the middle class art patrons to get portraitures of their families and colleagues done. Even during today’s day and age, inspite of modern technologies like camera in various forms, portraits are commissioned by groups or individuals or even governments. Portraiture is one of the most important genres of art in the history of art. Coupled with landscape painting, portraiture is likely the most practiced genres of art. Through a well done portrait, the inner essence of the subject can be showcased – for example if someone has a gentle demeanor, perhaps the colour tones used would be more gentle and soothing to the eyes. Another such example would be if the eyes of a person expressed the innocence of their character, it would be the eyes of this subject that the portrait artist focuses on bringing alive through the art piece. Portraiture is an art form the roots of which can be found in the prehistoric times. Over a period of time the kind of paint artists used in their art also evolved. In today’s day and age, some artists prefer using pencils and charcoal for portraiture while others prefer painting the portrait using acrylic colours, oil pastels, oil paints or water colours. It really depends from person to person and what each of them feel most comfortable in using. Portraits bring a notion of timelessness to life. Portrairs of your loved one can be gifted to them as a token of adoration, to let the ones dear and special to you know that you find their beauty mesmerizing. Or a portrait can also be made for someone whom you simply admire of care about. When it comes to portraiture, every artist has his or her own signature style of painting. Every artist will have a different way of doing it. Some artists may prefer having the person who is the subject of the painting actually present while the artist sketches or paints. Some artists will ask the subject to come at the setting made for the painting, where a picture is taken of the scene. Once pictures are taken, the artist may not require the subject to be present at the scene anymore. television or the newspaper but have never been to. An interesting aspect of inspiration for painting is that there are a lot of artists who get inspired by the dreams they get while they are asleep. Being aware in dreams and being able to recollect them is called lucid dreaming. Since artists usually are really good with recollecting what they see, they are able to reproduce what they have seen in their dreams. Some artists have mastered the art of self portraits. While some artists may debate that this practice is vain, the ones who do practice it may swear that self portraits actually helps them understand themselves better. It helps them capture the various facial expressions attached to their own emotions – for them this is a method self reflection. There are so many reasons portraiture is a beautiful art form, anyone interested in art should definitely give it a try at least once in their life.
