Get On The Property Ladder Don’t miss your chance to get on the property ladder in Hertsmere. Hertfordshire County Council wants to help first time buyers in Hertsmere onto the property ladder.
Chris Hayward, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “Our Local Authority Mortgage Scheme has really taken off in some parts of the county, but in others there seems to have been limited interest. We want to make sure that all first time buyers in Hertfordshire know about this excellent opportunity to get on the property ladder.”

£25 per person
The Local Authority Mortgage Scheme was 07:58:12 launched in November 2012. Hertfordshire county council has set aside £12m to help hundreds of buyers onto the property ladder with a deposit of just five per cent. The scheme has attracted 86 applications – most of which are currently being processed – and 30 families have already moved into their new homes (as of end of April 2013). Subject to lenders’ usual lending criteria, borrowers are able to select any existing property in the Hertfordshire area up to a maximum loan of £190,000 (£180,500 in Stevenage). First-time buyers put down five per cent of the property price, and Hertfordshire County Council provides a cash-backed indemnity of up to 20 per cent as additional security. The local authority then earns interest on this amount. The first-time buyer
owns the property in its entirety and will have access to a range of products at a lower rate of interest than would normally be available for this level of deposit. Chris continued: “Firsttime buyers often say that raising a deposit is the biggest challenge they face when looking to take their first steps onto the property ladder. Hertfordshire is a great place to live but its attractiveness and location mean that it can be difficult for people to buy their first home. This scheme provides an opportunity for us to help first-time buyers, assist the local housing market and relieve some local demand for social housing.” Hertfordshire’s Local Authority Mortgage Scheme is available in branches of Lloyds TSB and the Leeds Building Society. Alternatively, visit: www.hertsdirect. org/firsttimebuyers
While any first-time buyer with a five per cent deposit is eligible to apply, applications are subject to rigorous checking by the lenders involved, as is true of any mortgage. Applications can be turned down if the usual criteria for securing a mortgage are not met.

Supporting Eric Supporting Eric Summer Party is back and as good as before. It will be held on Friday 21st June at 7:30pm at The Royal Chace, Queens Suite, Enfield. Local people may recognise Eric, who last year appeared on BBC’s DIY SOS, and this event coincides with the Motor Neurones Disease Association (MNDA) awareness month, June 2013.
There will be a champagne reception, fine dining, headlining world-class entertainment from Marc Spellman and much more excitement. It costs £55 per head to attend the event with all profit going towards funds for the rivers family and the MNDA charity. Eric Rivers is in the late stages of Motor Neurones Disease. Eric is now confined to a wheel chair and daily life for the whole
family is getting harder every day. Thankfully due to some of the money raised so far at Supporting Eric events Eric now has an eyegaze computer allowing him not only to communicate with his family and friends but also to continue blogging his inspirational Facebook messages. You can follow Eric’s blog at learnlovelive. co.uk. Here are a couple of extracts from his blogs: “What does it mean to be able to speak? Well my own view is this, if the eyes are the windows of the soul, then words are the vibrations of the soul.”
“As I progress through the various stages of MND/ ALS, I can’t help, but reflect on my lost super power. This last week, the last remnants of intelligible speech has left me, packed away, with the rest of my luggage, arms, legs and hands. Each time a piece of me is packed on-board my departure flight, it always
Who’s Sleeping with You Tonight?
sets me back. You know, that uneasy feeling you get, when you see your luggage disappear from your view as it goes down the conveyor belt. You always wonder a) will I get it back? And b) what condition will it in, if I do get it back?” Eric still has all his mental capabilities in tact even though his body is becoming a prison. Eric gets great strength from the Supporting Events that are organised in his name and really appreciates the love and support and the awareness raised about Motor Neurones Disease highlighting the destruction it causes in families. This year a raffle will be held with the chances of winning tickets to see Robbie Williams and Olly Murz perform live, they might not be the artists you want to see but I’m sure you know someone
that would love to see them. There is also a chance to win an iPad and an iPod Nano and loads of sporting memorabilia. Even if you are not lucky enough to win any of these great prizes you are still raising money for a great organisation and having fun doing so. The Summer Party is sponsored by Chamberlains Estates and although many of the tickets have already sold there are still a few left. To reserve your seat now to avoid missing out on an amazing night email Gemma Hosking at gemmahosking@hotmail. co.uk.
Do you have lodgers in your bed? The bugs, which are tiny & less than a millimetre long. They feed on scales of human skin and produce allergens which are easily inhaled during sleep. The warm, damp conditions created in an occupied bed are ideal for the creatures, but they are less likely to thrive when moisture is in short supply. So airing your bed is very very important. Make sure that your bed has a good supporting spring unit inside so that it springs back when it’s pushed down & in turn this acts as a bellows effect and draws air in & out of the mattress which has an airing effect. By airing your bed, this helps to dry up the moisture that we lose per night which can be up to one pint per person. Not to mention the fact that we shed about one pound of skin per year per person. And most of that goes into our beds. House dust mites are thought to cause asthma and other allergies. The average bed could be home to up to 1.5 million house dust mites. Dr Matt Hallsworth, of the charity Asthma UK, said: ‘House-dust mite allergens can be an important trigger for many people with asthma. So if you are thinking about changing your beds, why don’t you come and talk to an experts here at Vic Smith beds and let us help you. Part of our service is that we collect your old bed when we deliver, so if you want quality, value and service, you want Vic Smith Beds in Southgate and now Enfield.

Sniffing out crime Dog walkers in Potters Bar are joining forces with the council and police to help keep the town an even safer place to live and work. New and existing Dog Watch members and their four-legged friends attended a special event at The Chequers pub in Coopers Lane, Potters Bar,
today to receive crime prevention advice as well as a few free dog-related goodies.
Councillor Charles Goldstein, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, explained: “Like all of the best ideas, this is brilliant because it is so simple. As a Dog Watch member, you won’t have to do more
than you normally do, but if you do notice anything out of the ordinary, you can report it quickly and easily.”
Please Mention
PCSO Chris Ramdeen added: “Dog walkers spend a lot of time out in their communities and would know if something suspicious or out of the ordinary was happening in their neighbourhood. Dog walkers can not only help cut crime but can deter offenders.” Local residents were joined by Hertsmere Borough Council officers including the dog warden, local PCSOs and representatives from the RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre and Village Vet Potters Bar. Dog Watch is one of many watch schemes run by Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership (CSP) - other schemes include Pub Watch, Shop Watch, Allotment Watch, Horse Watch and Neighbourhood Watch.

Capel Manor College college is very proud that a team of its students (first year Level 2 garden design students Sarah Jarman, Arit Anderson and Anna Murphy, and recent graduate, Alison Worster), who beat off numerous applicants and were chosen to be the two out of three finalists. The RHS organised the national competition for individuals starting their careers in horticulture or
floristry, to decorate and enhance three towering sculptures with displays that are innovative, eye catching, creative and are horticultural in nature. The sculptures, which were commissioned by the RHS, were used as a landmark for visitors to find the Fresh Gardens, a new show garden category introduced at the show in 2012.
The level 2 students’ initial inspiration for the ‘Bird Columny’ came from what the sculpture actually looked like; in the eyes of one of the designers ‘a giant bird feeder’. The design was created to highlight the plight of the native birds and to encourage individuals to take responsibility for looking after and maintaining the native bird population.

A Place To Care
A hospice is more than a building it is a way of caring for people.
North London Hospice isn’t just about inpatient care. Hospice care is also provided in people’s own homes, in outreach settings like care homes and through our day care services.
Despite the challenges of living with a life-limiting illness, day services run from our site in Barrowell Green, Winchmore Hill are often characterised by the sound of laughter and a strong sense of hope. A variety of services are provided – ranging from nursing and medical assessment to creative activities, complementary therapies, advice and information. But perhaps most important is the relationships that individuals make with each other and the staff and volunteers involved in their care. Through these friendships people share all sorts of stories, memories, thoughts and ideas. They are often funny, sometimes sad, and always insightful and inspirational.
We recognise that it is not just patients who need care but also the people who are caring for them – their families, friends and those who support them. Here Enfield resident Ursula Corrigan shares her life as a carer and
10
how using North London Hospice day services has helped her and her husband Patrick.
“Patrick has been ill for quite some years now. He has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and as a result has respiratory failure. He is dependent on oxygen to help him breathe and cannot be left on his own. It’s a worrying life caring for a respiratory patient, as you never know what might happen things can change so quickly.”
“When Patrick’s condition deteriorated last year his respiratory nurse, suggested he should be referred to the Hospice for specialist palliative care. I had already heard of North London Hospice and neither of us were scared as we knew it would be a great hep to us both. Being a carer is difficult. You need a lot of stamina, energy and patience. As well as a wife, I am a nurse, carer, cook, cleaner.. I am everything.” “Patrick has complicated health issues and hospital was no longer the right place for him. We were put in touch with the Hospice community team and one of the nurses came to visit us. I don’t know what we’d do without Eileen. Within 10 minutes of being in the house she had correctly assessed Patrick’s situation. She seemed to instinctively know what he needed and calmly dealt
EN MAGAZINE - June 2013
with the situation. She is remarkable. Without her regular visits and phone calls Patrick would not be able to live at home and be in the his own environment. I don’t know how we could cope without her. She is like gold-dust.”
“Patrick was one of the first patients to use North London Hospice’s day services building, in Enfield, when it opened in September last year. He loves it. He takes part in the art classes, he has Reiki and joins in with the relaxation sessions. What he enjoys the most is being able to meet and talk to other people.” “The volunteers are absolutely fantastic. They are so friendly and you’re never left sitting on your own – there’s always a volunteer who will come over and chat to you.”
“Caring for someone with a life-limiting illness can be very stressful, and often carers do not know where to go for support and advice. North London Hospice has a carer’s group where I can find emotional and practical support. We chat about so many different things. It’s an opportunity to relax, unwind, make new friends and talk to someone who appreciates the challenges of being a carer.” “I won’t usually leave Patrick anywhere but I know he’s well looked after and they understand his condition. When I first walked in, it felt so calm and relaxing. The nurses know exactly how to set up his nebuliser and can
make sure his medication is correctly given. I know he is safe. “
“I have benefitted from it too. I can do things like go to the dentist, have a physiotherapy appointment and get my medical needs sorted out. Or some days I just come home and sleep.” “I am just so relieved to have the support of North London Hospice. I can relax knowing that without a doubt Patrick has the best care possible in this world for him.”
Did you know……. • North London Hospice cares for around 1,400 terminally ill people a year • North London Hospice is a charity. Our care is free of charge. • It costs more than £6.5 million a year to run North London Hospice, only 23% is funded by the NHS. • We offer; Hospice at home, day services and in-patient care. • We also provide bereavement services for carers, family and friends. • We are proud of our identity as the UK’s first multi-faith hospice.

Think you know chairs?
what does it mean?
A while ago I suggested to a friend that we go out for a meal at Enzo’s Ristorante. “I realy like it there but I always feel it is somewhere I have to dress up to go to, can we go somewhere else a bit more casual,” was her reply.
That got me thinking about Enzo’s and yes I had to agree it was a great venue but one that I was more likely to go to for a special occasion or one of the party nights rather just out for a meal on the spur of the moment.
But not anymore. The other week I week along to try out the new midweek dinning experience 3,6,9. Gone are the clean white table clothes and linen napkins, to be replaced by more informal even causal wooden tables. The walls have had a bit of a make over as well, with the introduction of bold bright colours. Overall there is a more relaxed feel about the place. But upon arrival I was still greeted in a polite and friendly manor by Enzo himself. But I was not here for the décor, although I did like the relaxed atmosphere, I was here for the food.
The new promotion offers £3 for any starter, £6 for any pasta main and £9 main course, hence 3,6,9. The offer also relates to a glass of wine or bottle beer £3 cocktails, £6 and bottle of house wine £9. It sounds fantastic value but what would it taste like and the portion sizes be?
While looking over the menu we ordered the Bread and Olives to keep us going, and to my surprise we were served with the same large green olives and selection of bread I had had on my last visit. No cutting corners here.
At only £3 a starter we decided it was not to extravagant to go for 4 starters between 3 of us, as the selection was so appetising. Our choice included Grilled Spicy Choirizo Sausage, on a chutney of peppers, onions & basil, Cajun Sqiud with basil & plum tomato salad, Deep Fried Mozzarella on spicy pomodoro, Flat Mushroom stuffed with goats cheese. The portion sizes are not small put where quickly devoured!
To follow as mains we had Lasagna, Chicken Breast with mushroom & leek sauce with fresh seasonal vegetables & may 13.indd sauté potatoes and Enzo’s Mussels - 1 Kilo bowl of mussels in lemon, lime, garlic, coriander, cream & tomato sauce served with chips. All the food was cooked beautifully and enjoyed by us all.
At under £50 for the 3 of us including a bottle of wine, this had not only been an opportunity of eating fantastic food, experiencing the new casual dinning environment at Enzo’s, but fantastic value for money. To book your call 020 8363 6974 or go to www. enzosristorante.co.uk

Water Was Not Always So Fresh Or Available From The Tap! Enfield Museum, you may not have heard or seen of it but you will find it situated inside the Dugdale Center on the corner of Cecil Road and London Road. The museum itself is located on the right side of the building and is clearly indicated for people to find. The Enfield Museum is held within two rooms yet it still holds a monumental amount of information about the area we live in. The current exhibition, New River, opened to the public on the 26th April 2013 and will stay open until 5th January 2014, holds 400 years of information on the new river that flows around our area. The New River has been around for 400 years and is 42 miles in length, it has had many alterations, repairs and removals over those years, and one of the
12
more recent alterations was the large project during 1998-2003 to restore the Enfield Town New River Loop.
The exhibit tells you all about the New River, like where it comes from, why it was made and how it was made. There is an electronic video that plays out through the day that you can sit down and watch. It tells you everything about the New River and other rivers in the area.
Among the displays is an old outhouse, dare you take a look inside and see the dark and disgusting things people used before the invention of the modern toilet. In Elizabethan times, London’s supply of fresh drinking water and the removal of its dirty water was almost non-existent. The city had a growing population that led to
EN MAGAZINE - June 2013
overcrowding sickness and an overpowering stench.
The project to build the New River began in 1604, by 1605 the first three miles had been dug up but more money was needed so the work stopped. In
1609 it started again and this time it was Hugh Myddelton, a goldsmith and entrepreneur, who was given the authority to carry out the works.
However, due to engineering problems and the need to pay off landowners, the project was once again in need of money. To solve this, Myddelton sold a number of shares in the venture but this was not enough to finance the whole scheme, so King James 1 agreed to put up half of the money in return for half of the profits. This impressive feat of engineering was completed in 1613 and a formal ceremony took place at the Round Pond in Islington near the present New River Head, just below Sadler’s Wells. In 1619, after the river was completed and opened, the New River Company was created by Charter with Myddelton as the first Governor. This setup lasted for almost the
Local News and Events next 300 years until the company was dissolved and incorporated into
The Metropolitan Water Board; which in turn was abolished and replaced by Thames Water, subsequently by the RWE Group and then by Kemble Water Limited, a consortium of institutional investors managed by the Macquarie Capital Funds (Europe) Limited, on 1 December 2006.
Fixing London’s Stink
Did you know if it was not for Joseph William Bazalgette who was a local resident born on Clay Hill in 1819, we would still have sewage running down our streets and we would have loads more health issues.
In 1849 Bazalgette was appointed assistant surveyor to the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers, becoming the Engineer on the death of his predecessor three years later. This Commission ordered Bazalgette to carry out a major survey of London’s sewers, which he found to be inadequate and in major need of repair. In 1854 the cash-strapped Commission of Sewers was replaced by the Metropolitan Board of Works. Bazalgette, as their Chief Engineer, proposed a large, intercepting network of sewers to collect the outflows of waste and convey it to East London. The scheme was initially rejected as too expensive but after the ‘Great Stink’ of June 1858, when the stench from the Thames became so bad that business in the Houses of Parliament was suspended, Prime Minister Disraeli rushed though an act allowing the money to be raised for the sewers to be built. Bazalgette started work immediately and by 1874, the year he was knighted, the system was fully operational. 85 miles of underground brick mains sewers were built to intercept sewage outflows and 1,100 miles of street sewers, to intercept the raw sewage that, until
then, had often flowed freely through the streets of London and directly into the Thames.
The scheme involved constructing major pumping stations at Deptford and Crossness, south of the river and at Abbey Mills and Chelsea, to the north. It also involved the construction of the Victoria, Albert and Chelsea embankments. A memorial to Sir Joseph Bazalgette stands on the Victoria embankment above one of the sewers he engineered, and that is still in use to this day.
The museum is open to the public everyday of the week between the hours of 9am and 5pm apart from Sundays, when it is open 10am till 1pm. It is free and a great place to go for all ages. Even though most young people would say museums are boring I have watched them find the exhibits fascinating and interesting. Many of the displays and artifacts on display were found in the area and given to help the museum present Enfield in both its history and today The New River exhibition is a good place to visit because it gives you an understanding of what life used to be like centuries ago, shows you what people had to live with and what things we take for granted now, such as a fitted bathroom with running water. It isn’t a large museum so it doesn’t take all day to go around and it doesn’t make you or the young ones tired. You are able to go through all the exhibits completely interested the whole time. It is a nice place to go to even if you only have twenty minutes because there is so much information you could take in that those twenty minutes are worthwhile. Legal Page
Legal Page in association with Myth or Reality? There are many misconceptions about the law
How many of us think we know the legal and our legal position. Of course the guy down the pub or the mum at the school gate can be totally relied on for accurate and impartial advice – can’t they! EN Magazine asked local law firm Martin Shepherd Solicitors LLP to look at some of the common myths and advise our readers to keep them on the right side of the law. The concept of common law marriage
Myth: “I receive common law status after I have lived with a man for two years. After that, if our relationship breaks down, I can claim against his property and get maintenance from him when we separate.”
Reality: That is not the case at all. Common law marriage has not existed since 1753 when it was abolished by the Marriage Act! The two year time period only applies on death. If you have lived with someone for at least 2 years or more and are financially dependent upon them when they die you may be able to make a claim against their estate if they died without making a Will, had an out of date Will which did not include you or had made a Will which did not include you at all. If you split up whilst you are both alive, you don’t have any claims if everything was owned and paid for by the other person even if you have been living together for many years and shared a home and brought up a family together. There is no time period for living together which automatically gives rights to the non asset owning person. If there are children under the age of 18 at the time of
Solicitors LLP the separation a claim can be made on their behalf.
If you decide to cohabit consider having a cohabitation agreement which sets out what you have both agreed to pay for and own and making a Will. Property rights on marriage
Myth: If we are married I will get the house on my partner’s death even if it is not in my name
Reality: Marriage does not confer automatic property rights on death. A Will states what is to happen on death such as the transfer of a property to a non-owning spouse. If there is no Will the person dies intestate and the Rules of Intestacy apply. If there is a surviving nonowning spouse with no children he or she receives the first £450000 of any property and then a life interest in half of the remainder. Therefore if the house is worth more than £450000 the surviving spouse does not get all of the property and it may have to be sold. Reasons needed to get a divorce
Myth: “To get a divorce I have to prove mental cruelty.” Reality: This is untrue. To obtain a divorce, you must show that the marriage has irretrievably broken down by referring to one of five facts which are: adultery; unreasonable behaviour (which could include some emotional abuse); desertion; 2 years’ separation with consent; 5 years’ separation Division of assets in a divorce
Myth: “In divorce, all our assets are divided equally.”
Reality: This is not necessarily the case. Although an equal division is a consideration, there are other factors which can be applied which would not result in an equal split. These include but are not limited to: the length of the marriage; contributions prior to and during the marriage; the needs of any children under 18; earnings and potential income and capital and potential capital including pensions. Debtors’ prison still exists
Myth: “If I cannot pay my debts I will go to prison.”

Legal Page Reality: Debtors’ prisons were abolished in 1833! Now, if you can not pay your debts and owe more than £750, you could be made bankrupt. If you owe money a court judgement can be obtained against you which will affect your credit rating and ability to borrow money in the future. The debt can be enforced in several ways none of which involve an immediate prison sentence. A prison sentence is only given if certain court orders are not complied with. Bailiffs can take my possessions
Myth: “Bailiffs can come into my property and remove my things and all my furniture.
Reality: Bailiffs or High Court Sheriffs can only enter your home or property with your consent or a specific Court Order. Unfortunately debt recovery companies frequently send misleading letters threatening to send in the bailiffs to seize goods when they have no power to do so as it is an effective means for them to get payment. Possession is nine tenths of the law
Myth: “If I buy something for its true value, it is legally mine.”
Reality: You legally own something if you have bought it legitimately or someone else has bought it legitimately and given it to you. If, however, it was bought from someone selling on stolen goods for example, it is not legally yours. Having property in your possession does not necessarily mean it is yours and that you can keep it. Traffic offences are minor things Myth: “A road traffic conviction is not a criminal one. Reality: Don’t be fooled, it is!
When you buy a property or start living with someone take legal advice and think about making a Will. Martin Shepherd charge £180 plus vat for joint wills and £120 plus vat for a single will. Make sure your property goes to those you want it to.

Business
Good Entrepreneurs Develop X-ray Vision The most successful entrepreneurs have a knack, they can see through all operational issues; the products, the markets, the consumers, potential risks and opportunities, down to the hard underlying financial structure of their business. In most cases, and in the long run, luck is not the deciding factor for business success. The secret to “lucky” entrepreneurs is having the ability to explore, analyse and streamline every area of their business, and turn every opportunity to their competitive advantage, as well as turning every setback into an opportunity.
Entrepreneurs need to understand the environment around them and take advantage of the positive changes, by taking initiatives earlier than their competitors (doing things that the others would not do and what others haven’t considered) In this article I will briefly touch on Business Timing, Understanding Your Business, Small Business Risk and When Crisis Strikes. Timing is everything!
Timing trends and cycles have a big influence on entrepreneurial success, in the same way as financial and entrepreneurial acumen. To succeed, you have to do your homework, understand the trends, know where they are in the cycle for your sector and the economy as a whole, and always try to focus on the next “bounce of the ball”, and how we can take advantage of it. Entrepreneurs, have to see the context in which they are operating. They need to know where they are in relation to trends and
16
cycles and also have to be sure they don’t confuse one with the other.
Understanding where they are in the cycle in a particular sector is crucial. If you enter into a venture at the top of its market cycle, you will be setting yourselves a harder task than if you go in at the bottom. At the top prices are high, competition is fierce and profitability and values are about to decline. Despite this fact, business cycles are something that few entrepreneurs think about when they launch their ventures.
These are some crucial questions you need to consider: is the economy strong or weak? Is consumer spending rising or falling? Is the level of savings rising or falling? Though nobody can be sure about how the economy is going to behave, when drafting business plans you have to ensure that it is not totally dependent on a single economic outcome. You need to apply a sense of “what happens if”; interest rates go up, consumer spending declines, unemployment increases and retail sales fall.

Understanding Your Business. More products and services, whether food & beverage, clothing & accessories, household products, durables or entertainment, are reaching consumers around the world. Wealthy consumers shop at discount stores whilst lower end consumers experience luxury and all age groups buy online and offline. What will be the next successful retail concept? Which products and services are the winners in times of challenged consumer spending?
What are the best marketing campaigns in developing markets? By gaining reliable insights on the consumer and understanding their buying behaviour, monitoring competitors product portfolio, trade activities and price promotions, understanding the usage attitudes towards specific products, services and brand attributes you are able to refine your marketing to consumers. This allows you to devise a practical road map to compete and grow.
Profit and Loss For a business to succeed, every key area of the business should have detailed Profit & Loss accounts. Costs should be matched with revenues in order to establish the real margin of profits by products/services. It does not matter how big or small the business is. The same principles apply if a business wants to keep control of the finances
Lack of Risk Management Your business is at risk if you don’t have preventative measures and risk management strategies in place.
Whatever business you are in, small, medium or large, there are risks that apply across the board. Being aware of the common risks small businesses are faced with will help you to be better prepared and deal with any eventualities appropriately, bearing in mind that not all risks fit perfectly into the various risk category.
Some of the more common risks that apply to small businesses are: Reduced demand for your products and services, financial issues like cash-flow, accessible credit, interest rates & foreign exchange rates, reputation, loss of staff, especially those with unique qualities, theft, increased competition, failure to comply with legislation and regulations, increased legislation &

Business regulations, bad debts created by customers, natural disasters such as fires, floods and storms, issues related to internet connectivity, internet fraud and scams, insurance coverage, sheer bad management, reputational risks, lack of business skills & innovation and unforeseen events. What risks do you think may be applicable to your business? It would be a good idea if you could list and describe how these various risks will or could affect your business. Would You Know What to Do when Crisis Strikes? By nature, crises are serious and dangerous moments in a businesses life cycle.
Regardless of the kind of business you are in, there are types of crisis that have the potential to cripple your business, but crisis can also lead to positive outcomes by providing good opportunities for learning and improvements and
leave your business stronger than it was before the crisis. The three major elements of crisis are that they come as surprise, they threaten your business existence and they need short response time. So would you know what to do?
Although small businesses may not be susceptible to a wider variety of crisis, it is, nevertheless important that a small business plans for these types of events. This is due to the fact that if your business was to be struck by an unexpected crisis, and you were unable to manage it, any subsequent financial damage could be devastating, and could even lead to business closure. Holidays
Here Comes The Sun Congratulations. You’ve struggled through what feels like the longest winter on record, and yet you kept the faith: one day, you told yourself, as you gazed at the snow-covered pavements (April, lest ye forget), and shivered in sudden flash hailstorms (May, remember?), one day, the sun will come back again. And lo, here it is! (At least, let’s hope so.) In the expectation that summer will definitely arrive and stay with us for some time, here at EN we’ve been looking at some of the different ways in which you can look after your skin whilst enjoying the sunshine. Before you start
Arming yourself with some basic skincare information is a good start to the holiday season. Dr Virginia Hubbard, Consultant Dermatologist at London Bridge Hospital, offers some key advice. · Avoid sunburn – use a sunscreen or at least SPF30 with UVA and UVB protection · Use twice as much sunscreen as you think you need. Most people apply it far too thinly. Make sure you reapply every hour or so to ensure continued protection.
· Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm when the UV rays are at their strongest.
· Keep babies and children out of the sun. Use UV protective suits and hats with brims and keep them in the shade. New trends One of the latest ways to apply a skin saver is to spritz it on, even over wet skin. Piz Buin Wet Skin is the UK’s first sunscreen designed to be applied directly to wet skin.
Consultant dermatologist Dr Sue Mayou says, ‘One of the crucial times to apply sunscreen on holiday is immediately after leaving the water. It’s all too easy to get out of the sea or pool and wait to dry before reapplying sunscreen, during which time one is in danger of burning.’

EN MAGAZINE - June 2013
Piz Buin Wet Skin Transparent Sun Spray offers instant sun protection on wet or dry skin, so there’s no longer a need for towel drying or having to wait to dry after leaving the pool or sea before reapplying sun protection. Just spray straight on to wet or dry skin for instant invisible sun protection.
The spray doesn’t mix with water on the skin, but cuts directly through it, forming a barrier between the formula and the water droplets. This means it doesn’t slide off, and maintains the level of protection. Advanced UVA/UVB filters help to protect skin, while the transparent formula means that there are no white marks – plus, it’s easy to apply. It also contains vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect from free radicals, which damage skin cells and cause premature ageing. Pucker up It’s not just your skin that needs some TLC during the summer season. Your lips can suffer, too, and you’re going to want them to be in tip-top kissing condition over the holidays. The bestselling Balmi lip balm has been given a makeover and now comes in a handy new cube which can be attached to a zip or bag to provide a cool, functional accessory. Great for when you’re on the move, the makers promise zero hassle and fuss-free application. Jam-packed with a natural blend of vitamin E, Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil, the Balmi Cube leaves your lips moisturised and super-smooth, with longlasting SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection for daily care. Coming in four flavours – Strawberry, Coconut, Raspberry and Mint – it could even help steer you away from the ice cream van…. Available at £4.99 from Boots, Tesco and Snow & Rock Mountain Warehouse stores.
Holidays The organic approach If you want to take care of your skin but prefer a natural approach to your regime, Aubrey Organics is for you. It’s expanded its ‘Natural Sun’ sun care range, offering sun protection using natural ingredients. The Natural Sun Unscented SPF45 Sunscreen is water resistant for up to 40 minutes. For those in search of a quick and easy application, three is also the Natural Sun Unscented SPF30 Spray, with organic aloe to soothe and hydrate. Skincare from the inside Starting from the outside may seem the obvious way to take care of your skin, but you can also take care of yourself from the inside. Colladeen ® Visage offers sun protection from the inside out by taking daily tablets, providing a natural SPF of 10 in 12 weeks and 15 in 24 weeks (taking two tablets daily). As an added bonus, a clinical study showed a daily dose of the little pink tablet could significantly improve skin firmness and reduce wrinkle depth.
If you want to eat your way to good health to maximise your chances of safe sunbathing, Linwoods Superfoods have some suggestions. They advise that vitamin E can help maintain healthy nails, 14:40 19219 Drapemasters Close Up landscape ad_Layout 1 21/05/2013
skin and hair, and if your skin is healthy before you start your sun exposure, it can put you ahead of the game. Their Milled Flaxseed, Sunflower and Pumpkin Seeds mixture contains sunflower seeds that provide vitamin E, and flaxseed, which is a good source of Omega-3, A fatty acid rich in oil content that helps to improve your skin. Cold milled to aid quick and easy absorption into the body, this tasty blend is the perfect way to make sure you’re beautiful inside and out – what better way to start your holiday?
So there you have it: all you need to get ready for summer. It will come. Keep the faith.

How not to bring excess weight back from your summer holiday (and I don’t mean in your suitcase!)
This summer many of us will pack our cases, head off to the airport, ferry port, train station or jump in the car and begin our journey to our summer holiday destination. We might bring shorts, bikinis, sun hats, books and bug spray, but for many of us what we leave behind can turn out to be more of a problem. You might be thinking passport, wallet, or mobile phone, and while all of these can present various different issues to overcome, what I am actually talking about is our ability to make the right decisions about eating well and staying active. These days most people are aware that good nutrition and moderate exercise are important for a healthy life and to prevent certain diseases. But for some reason, lots of us seem to let go of all control when we are away and we eat too much, eat the wrong thing, drink too much and take no exercise bar a leisurely few lengths of backstroke in the pool or a walk to the bar in the evening.
Of course many people lead very busy and stressful lives and holidays should absolutely be a time of rest and recuperation. But that doesn’t mean we should turn to destructive behaviour and treat our bodies badly for a week, ten days, two weeks or however long we are away for.
How many times have you said, or heard someone else say that they need a holiday to get over a holiday? In many instances it is because people have been away with young children, family members that they don’t get on that well with or an elderly relative, which of course can be hard work. Some people take holidays that involve lots of travel to and from their destination, or from place to place during the holiday; again this can be exhausting and people can be forgiven for feeling worn out when they get home. Of course there are many people who do take activity holidays and spend the majority of their time away involved in sport or other kinds of physical activity (think hiking, cycling, and specialist weight loss/fitness vacations). But for lots of people, it’s the unhealthy choices that they make while away that can leave them feeling worn out, bloated, lacking in vitality, and which can result in increased weight and body fat which in turn sees them in need of a detox or new gym membership on their return! Even those holiday-makers with the best intentions see their plans fly out of the window as soon as they feel the sun on their skin and see the cocktails being served at the hotel bar.
So before we look at things we can do for a healthier holiday, let’s think for a minute about the mind-set that is often associated with going away. Many people view a holiday as a time for letting go, eating what they want, when they want, and drinking as much as they like. Most people know that this leads to bloating, digestive problems (especially constipation), poor sleep, weight gain and reduced energy so why do we do it? Why do people who spend most of the year trying to eat healthily and stay active suddenly give it all up on holiday, even when they know it will leave them feeling awful? Why is this sort of behaviour seen as a treat? You

EN MAGAZINE - June 2013
can be sure your body doesn’t see it that way!
Tackling this issue and keeping to our usual healthy behaviour firstly requires a change in the way we think: we need to start seeing holidays as a time to be kind to ourselves and our bodies. Not just that we aren’t working or looking after the home, but rather we should view a holiday as a time to relax, regain a sense of self, and get back some of the energy and fun that we lose in the daily grind of life back home. We should start to see our time away as an opportunity to nurture our bodies and to treat them well so that when we get home we are refreshed, energised and ready to get back to everyday life. Once we really understand that we will feel better if we treat ourselves better, we can start to take action. I’m not suggesting you get up and run five or ten kilometres every morning (but if you feel like it go ahead!) nor that you should be on a strict diet (or any diet for that matter) while on holiday; I’m talking about simple things you can do, and better choices that you can make that won’t have any negative impact on your enjoyment. Here are a few ideas that might get you thinking.
If you are lucky enough to be by a pool or the sea, instead of just floating around in the water try to ensure that once a day you actually swim, and swim so that you get out of breath. Depending on your fitness and ability, this may be ten lengths or 100 lengths, or fifteen minutes swimming back and forth parallel to the shoreline; as long as you are actually moving and raising your heartbeat. Done in the morning, you can then spend the rest of the day happy in the knowledge that you have already done something beneficial that will help to prevent weight gain. If swimming isn’t your thing, try walking or running. Again, it doesn’t have to be a marathon or a three hour hike, but make sure that you walk for at least 20 minutes at a brisk pace; fast enough to raise your heartbeat and get slightly out of breath. It can be a great way to explore your destination or the countryside around where you are staying. In the morning or after lunch are great times to do this, the morning
Holidays may be cooler if you are somewhere hot. You could do a trade off with yourself – read three chapters of your book then go out and walk. Best of both worlds if you are a book worm and love catching up on holiday!
If you are in the pool with your kids, play around with them, throw a ball, pick them up and have fun with them that way. Moving about in the water is challenging and will work your muscles, especially if you are lifting small children at the same time (great for the arms!). You can get out of breath if you have swimming races or are chasing kids in the water – all good aerobic exercise. You’ll have fun, get some exercise in and your kids will love you for spending time with them. Again, win-win. Hire bikes, rowing boats, canoes, tennis courts or whatever is available in the area. Again, promise yourself dinner out, or a cocktail in the evening, or something else you look forward to on holiday if you have some fun and get some exercise in earlier in the day.
Depending on your surroundings there may be many opportunities for activity. Take a walk along the beach in the early evening before your first drink or dinner; explore the city on foot where possible rather than taking transport; try hill walking or walks across rough terrain to challenge your core muscles. Get up and play with your children – ball games, races, bike rides, football – anything that you all enjoy and that involves moving! Even playing with young children at the shore line, lifting them up each time a wave comes in will work muscles and is great fun for the little ones.
As long as you are active and moving you are doing something better for your body than just sitting or lying down for long periods. You’ll feel better and it doesn’t have to take hours or leave you feeling exhausted. Just move! When it comes to food choices I’ll keep it simple.
If you are abroad take the opportunity to try new fruits and vegetables that you can’t find at home.
Seek out restaurants with more on the menu than fish and chips, and go for lighter vegetable based dishes that aren’t covered in cheesy/creamy sauces. The Mediterranean diet is thought to be one of the healthiest, if that is where you are try to incorporate some of the local ways of eating by including fish and lean meats, vegetables, salads and healthy oils into your meals.
Enjoy your food but make sure that you aren’t just eating for eating’s sake. Don’t have an ice cream every day based on the excuse that it is hot – have a cold drink or sweeter chilled fruits like melon or grapes instead. Try a non-alcoholic fruit cocktail; exotic, yummy and much more interesting than a dollop of sugar- and fatfilled frozen cream. If you are more active during the day you may feel less inclined to scupper your efforts with fatty and refined foods later in the day. Why spoil the benefits gained from a swim with a plate of pizza and chips? If you don’t have dessert at home, don’t have it on holiday, or just have one now and again.
Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially in hot places and when taking exercise or being more active.
Don’t have a beer or glass of wine with your lunch every day, and try not to drink excessively in the evening. It goes without saying that you should have a good time on holiday but remember that alcohol can make you sleepy, lead to poor food choices and will most likely make you less inclined to get up and move or do something active. Lunchtime drinking, even in small amounts, can see your good intentions disappear in a sleepy haze! Having a fun and healthy holiday isn’t a contradiction in terms, and in fact making a few simple changes can really make a big difference to your enjoyment, your state of mind, and how you feel on your return home. It’s warmer, brighter and lighter for longer and our thoughts turn to summer fun – Bank Holidays, barbeques, picnics and gatherings. Here’s how to make the most these moments.. No need to let inclement weather ruin your plans… With the unreliability of our Great British weather we aim to help you make the most of summer with our luxurious awning range. Affording you the height of exterior summertime sophistication whilst extending your living area, allowing you to unwind and enjoy the fresh air for longer. Thinking of having a garden party? Awnings will keep you cool on the hottest days with their heat, glare and UV protection and conversely can offer a little respite in light showers. Drapemasters’ awnings are made to measure for you personally from fabrics which are from inspirational, on trend creative colour pallets with unique patterns ranging from simple architectural through to traditional. Awnings can also seriously reduce the amount of rays entering your property internally, which cause damage to your furniture and furnishings.
What are the options? Fantastic technological advancements enable us to offer a plethora of options for your awning. From motorisation with automatic controls so you don’t necessarily need to crank it open or closed, to light and heat boxes to further your enjoyment of ‘al fresco’ evenings for longer. And for those of you that like apps we have one to simulate how your awning could look against your home! How resilient are they? The fabrics used for our awnings are up to 10 times longer lasting than some traditional cotton fabrics and possess special stain guard and water repelling qualities. They are also designed to resist fading and temperature extremes.
Is it possible to use these in commercial situations? Yes, we often install these on shop fronts as well as bars and cafes as they’re available in flame retardant fabrics manufactured specifically for these applications. They also offer a great advertising space for a business and can be sign written with your business logo etc. How do I find out more about these? If you would like to contact us directly, we will make an appointment with you for a free site survey when we will measure and show you the options available. We will then provide you with a swift estimate in order to expedite the production and installation of your awning for what we hope will be many pleasurable summers to come. THE
Memory Lanes. One EN reader and his dog take a walk along Enfield’s pathways and look forward to looking back. Remember sunshine? It’s been a while. Better late than never, though. It’s made my daily dog walks a lot more pleasant, that’s for sure: shafts of light now seek out chinks in the trees’ leafy green armour, splattering the ground with a Pollock-esque patchwork of light and shade. Its photosynthesising rays fatten up every blade of meadow grass ‘til they’re green and juicy. The rabbits we pass are having a field day. Literally. The dog knows his routes like the backs of his paws. Gentle tugs on the lead (from him) remind me to stay on the proscribed paths. And it sets me thinking that that while the countryside we walk around might be fairly empty, it’s full of memories. Not mine. Or the dog’s. They belong to the Willards, the Jacksons, the Baldwins, the Rizzonis et al. Each dedicated bench a memorial to people who regularly paused for thought or breath. Later in the walk, there’s a tree by the bridleway just beyond the Flash Lane Aquaduct. Attached to it, maybe 8 feet from the ground, is another plaque. It’s oddly yet perfectly placed because it’s in memory of Copper Twilight, a beloved horse. Most walkers wouldn’t notice it. But Enfield’s equine set would. And they’re the ones who would understand most keenly the pain of losing a long-lived steed. How many other memories do the trees hold? In the quiet, it’s easy to imagine the growing thrum of Tudor hooves on the soft ground as a chase builds up through the Chace; branches cracking as dogs, horses and riders cut through the saplings that have since grown into today’s stout oaks. A stone’s throw further there’s Ranger’s Grave, a mossy memorial stone to tread softly round, lest you disturb the eponymous dog, asleep beneath the tangled glade his bright eyes once surveyed. Closer to home, other stonework carries memories of a sort, too. Just round the corner from my house is a ghost poster, one of those adverts that were painted directly onto the brickwork, remaining visible - just – despite time and weather. It’s for Newby and Firman, who once operated from the yard on Browning Road now occupied by Taylor Dolman.
30
EN MAGAZINE - June 2013
The interesting thing isn’t so much in the advert itself, which lists their activities (builders, undertakers, sanitation and decoration, no less), but in the phone number they give: Enfield 2. I guess the first call must have been from the relieved owner of Enfield 1, who could suddenly contact someone for an emergency extension, coffin or basin. Or even just a good gossip about Enfield’s non-phone-owning masses.
Nowadays, instant memories are so ubiquitous they become forgettable, fast. We think we have too much to remember because we have too many ways to store those memories. With Facebook imposing its interminable timeline on everyone’s journey through life and Instagram feeds stuffed full of pictures of every day’s meals, it’s just become too easy. I don’t know about you, but on family holidays when I was a kid (not that long ago), a brace of 36 exposure film rolls would see you through the summer
Of course, you had to wait that nervous, anticipatory week for Bonusprint to get your newly minted memories back to you, sunburnt, red-eyed and gurning out of focus. And back in the day, Photoshop couldn’t rescue you. You were stuck with them.
So maybe we should stop looking back and start looking forward. Summer’s here, and let’s hope that now the sun’s arrived, it won’t be such a fleeting visit. After a series of fairly forgettable summers, it’d be nice to have one to remember, however you choose to do that. Have you got something you want to get off your chest an opinion a rant or just want to share something? Then why not write it down and send it to editorial@ enmagazine.co.uk or EN Magazine, 63 High Street, Potters Bar, EN6 5AS
