GRAND FINALE ’68 this may be your last chance, you will find a tear off request sheet in the paper. This years Christmas party will be held at the LA CANADA COUNTRY CLUB, 5500 Godbey Dr., La Canada, on DECEMBER 21st. The cost is $17. per couple or $8.50 individually, this is a great way to say thank you to your non-PCA friends too, as they will enjoy an evening of good food and good music

and dancing. Remember guests are always welcome. The party will begin at 7:00, with a festive social hour and dinner at 8:00. The menu consists of, TOP SIRLOIN STEAK, tossed green salad, a baked potato with sour cream g chives, green vegetable, hot rolls, beverage and dessert. The schedule will allow us plenty of time for dancing to the music of Don RICARDO, who as you will recall showed us all such an enjoyable time at his home this summer and entertained equally well at last years Christmas Party. Don plays the kind of music we all enjoy, so have on your dancing shoes and think of all the special request songs you want to hear for your personal dancing pleasure. Th~ evening will also give us an opportunity to spread some good door prizes among the guests, a promising skit has been promised ,under the leadership of Dawn Waugaman. All in all the evening should be fun for all of us, but it can’t be if you won’t make arrangements to BE THERE!

YES’..’ I want to go to the GRAND FINALE ’68, enclosed is my check for the following: __Couples @ $17. per couple Individual @ $8.50 Name Address (Please make check payable to: PCA-LA) Mail with check to:

Perhaps as we close the year it would be a good idea to review the following and make sure we have not been guilty of any one of them. If you find yourself admitting that you have not been of genuine service when needed resolve in 1969 to change -

12 Good ways to kill an organization i) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) i0) ii) 12)

Don’t go to any of the meetings. If you do go, be late. Hold back on your dues as long as possible or don’t even pay them at all. If the weather doesn’t suite you, donlt even think of ~oing If you do go, find fault with the speaker, arrangements, etc. Never accept an office. It’s much easier to criticize than do something to help. Stay mad. Get sore if you are not appointed to an office or committee. If you are appointed, don’t attend executive or committee meetings. If asked to give an opinion on some matter, tell the chairman you have no comment. But, after the meeting, be su@e to tell everyone how it should be done. When others pitch in and use their abilities~ howl that the group is being run by a clique. Do nothing that is required of you. Make no effort to bring in new members. If you get a new g good idea, smother it at once. Don’t be sociable either within or outside the club.

7 Couples accepted our invitation to drive to La Cuesta Enchantada, William Hearst’s retreat in San Simeon. Nick F~iesen, Cece Moutes, and yrs truly, left early on Friday morn for San Luis Obispo via Foxen Canyon Rd. (3/67 Road g Track) which provided an opporunity for some rapid, unencumbered, exhilarating driving. In San Luis we met Curt Kuebler g his date, Sandy. The better part of the evening was spent exploring some of the unorthodox facilities of the Madonna Inn. On Sat. morning, when Ron Ramage g Ken Parlee arrived, we headed for the motel g ten to the Castle. 3 couples took the upstairs tour g 2 covered the lower portion of the castle. Those on the upstairs tour were in the company of a man who could not understand why a man with so much money could not afford new furniture?? At any rate, the weather was beautiful g all enjoyed the tour. Sat. afternoon was spent by diffement people in various ways. Curt g Sandy missed the smog so much that they headed for LA,

Friesen ~ Gedeon tried to find the winery on California 154 (Road g Track 4/68) but succeeded only in finding a roundabout way to go from Cambria to Cayucos, ~ Roger Wagner ~ Judy Logan went swimming in the "heated" pool at the motel. Later in the afternoon, Peter ~ Yoka Luelsdorf and Rolf g Elenore Meyer arrived. At an impromptu party in someone’s roon, dinner plans were made. Sophia (Cece’s faithful Fiat) and 5 Porsches made their way on a fog shrouded highway to the Brambles restaurant in Cambria where, wil excellent food ~ drink, we put the finishing touches on Nick’s birthday celebration. It was rumored that some people continued the celebration until early monning, but this was never confirmed. T~e Luelsdorf’s and the Meyer’s explored the beach across from the motel on Sunday momning g got to see the only glimpse of the sun to be seen until later in the day. Ron Ramage ~ Ken Parlee went back to the castle to make arrangements for another tour, and the rest of us had a leisurely breakfast. Peter ~ Yoka then l~d us to Cambria to visit another Castle, owned by PCA’er Dick Garrett and his wife S&lly. We were warmly received 6, after touring their castle, a huge English Tudor structure which is half heuse g half art-gallery-and grounds, spent the rest of the time talking about Porsches, past, present and futume.

All, except Ron g Ken, then headed down US i to Pismo Beach. We managed to get around all the Sunday drivers at Oceano, the sun burned thru the fog, and we once again had uncluttered Porsche roads which traversed beautiful country. At Guadalupe, we stopped at the Far Western Tavern (don’t ever fail to stop) for refreshments. Following this we had a fast run to LosAlamos and after a couple of tries, found Drum Canyon Rd. This road is a bit rough (right Roger?) but exciting. Those of you who went to the lOth Parade rally may remember it. From there we went to Solvang for a late lunch, and then headed for Santa Barbara. The Meyers’ left us at Stagecoach Road g missed the best roads on the whole trip. For those of you who have never used this road, please do beeause it is a much better Porsche road than the one that replaced it. We also ran down Painted Cave Rd. (also of lOth Parade fame) where Peter said later he thought yrs truly had driven off a cliff. (If was just a very steep switchback.) Both these roads are more fun to drive in the opposite direction, but nevertheless challenging either way. We then breezed thru Santa Barbara and headed for home. The castle tours were interesting, the weather - except for some fog~ incomparable, the air sweet, the companionship great~ the driving (lot-yes~ boring-no) exhilarating and sometimes hairy~ but in short, the whole weekend was fun for all who chose to go. Sorry that more of you couldn’t make it. Yrs truly (with apologies to Mr. Manney & thanks to Road ~ Track) George g Carol Gedeon, Castlemasters. P.S. Next year’s event chairman should make arrangements with the State of Calif. to use the road leading to the Castle for a hillclimb.

END OF THE YEAR IS ALMOST HERE. FUNNY HOW WE SAY THAT WHEN DECEMBER COMES AROUND, ALMOST LIKE IT WAS ONLY HERE FOR A MOMENT. I GUESS THE WHOLE YEAR WAS ONLY A MOMENT. I KNOW THAT A LOT OF PORSCHERAMA NIGHTS DIDN’T SEEM LIKE MOMENTS AROUND OUR HOUSE. WE HAVE ALL HAD A HECK OF A TIME WITH THE CLUB THIS YEAR. LET ME TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN BE PROUD OF THE BOARD YOU’VE HAD THIS YEAR. THEY ARE ALL DEDICATED PEOPLE. I HOPE THAT I WILL GET TO MEET A LOT OF YOU WHO EITHER HAVEN’T BEEN AROUND LATELY OR ARE NEW AND HAVEN’T HAD THE TIME TO COME AROUND. SHELLEY AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR, AND AN ENJOYABLE, SAFE, AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON. END OF THE YEAR. IT’S NEVER GONNA BE ’68 AGAIN, FOLKS! THESE ARE JUST SOME OF MY THOUGHTS. WILLOW J’PRINGJ’ "It rained all night, the day we left, the weather it was dry. The sun’s so bright, I froze to death ........ " THAT WAS THE STORY OF THIS YEAR’S WILLOW SPRINGS EVENT. ALL DAY FRIDAY PCA-LA’S PHONE WAS RINGING WITH PEOPLE WANTING TO KNOW IF THE EVENT WAS STILL ON. OUR REPLY, WITH CROSSED FINGERS, WAS "OF COURSE, WHY NOT?" DICK JOHNSON CALLED FROM LANCASTER FRIDAY MORNING TO BOLSTER OUR SPIRITS AND TELL US THE SUN WAS SHINING THERE AND THE WEATHER REPORTS ALL LOOKED GOOD EVEN THOUGH THE L.A. AREA WAS GETTING DRENCHED. WE LEFT ABOUT 1:30 IN THE AFTERNOON WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON. APPREHENSION MOUNTED UNTIL JUST BEFORE DROPPING DOWN INTO THE VALLEY WE WERE GREETED BY A BIG PATCH OF BLUE SKY AND SOON THEREAFTER WE COULD SEE THE WHOLE ANTELOPE VALLEY, CLEAR AND SUNNY. A SIGHT TO WARM THE COCKLES OF THE PORSCHE RACER’R

THE ONLY PEOPLE AT THE CARAVAN INN WERE THE GRUNDMEYERS FROM SAN DIEGO. THEY TRAILERED THEIR RAPID GROUP III 911T UP IN THE RAIN, NOT KNOWING IF WE’D BE RUNNING OR NOT, BUT THEY DIDN’T WANT TO MISS THE FUN IF WE DID. L.A. PEOPLE WHO STAYED HOME BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER TAKE NOTE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER PAUL WHITE SHOWED UP AND HE AND I WENT OUT TO THE TRACK TO SEE IF WE COULD GET ANYTHING DONE. WE COULDN’T. FRIDAY NIGHT’S ACTIVITIES CONSISTED OF SITTING AROUND THE BAR, GREETING THE LATE ARRIVALS, A RATHER DISORDERLY BENCH RACING SESSION IN THE MORRIS’S ROOM AND A NUMBER MAKING PARTY IN THE RAMAGE’S ROOM. A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. A FEW HEARTY SOULS, WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS LEST THEIR SANITY BE QUESTIONED, CHOSE TO ROUGH IT AND SPEND THE NIGHT AT THE

TRACK (GAWD, IT GETS COLD QUICK AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN). SATURDAY MORNING EVERYONE, EVEN NICK, WAS UP BRIGHT AND EARLY. THE WEATHER WAS BEAUTIFUL. DUE TO THE NORMAL DELAYS WE STARTED LATER THAN WE’D HOPED TO. NICK CAME ON WITH HIS USUAL BRILLIANT ORATORY AT THE DRIVER’S MEETING AND THEN ALL THE EAGER RACERS WERE TURNED LOOSE ON THE TRACK. THOSE WHO HADN’T DRIVEN WILLOW BEFORE OR WERE UNACCOSTUMED TO WHEELING THEIR PORSCHE WITH GUSTO WERE ADVISED TO GET SOME INSTRUCTION FROM ONE OF THE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE TYPES BEFORE GOING AT IT ON THEIR OWN. MOST PEOPLE TOOK HEED, ONE WHO DIDN’T WAS THE PRETTY BROWN 912 WHO LEFT THE TRACK AT TURN 5 AND RATHER RADICALLY DECAMBERED HIS RIGHT REAR WHEEL EARLY SATURDAY. THE TRACK WAS ABOUT TEN SECONDS FASTER THIS YEAR, MOSTLY BECAUSE THERE WAS ONE LESS CHICANE THAN LAST YEAR. WE ALSO FELT IT WAS SAFER THAN LAST YEAR DUE TO THE DIFFERENT LAYOUT AND ALSO THE IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO THE TRACK AND BORDERING LANDSCAPE IN THE PAST YEAR. THE ONLY PLACE IT WAS EASY TO GET INTO TROUBLE WAS IN TURN 5 WHICH WAS LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF A HILL, MAKING IT REAL EASY TO COME INT0 IT TOO FAST. FORTUNATELY, APART FROM A FEW MISSED SHIFTS, LEADING TO BENT VALVES/PUSHRODS SATURDAY’S PRACTICE WENT VERY SMOOTHLY. THE SKIES CLOUDED UP A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT IN EACH CASE THEY DIDN’T LAST LONG. PEOPLE IN SLOW/FAST CARS GOT LOTS OF PRACTICE BEING PASSED/PASSING ESPECIALLY WHEN THE 911R WAS ON THE COURSE. IT SEEMED THAT HE LAPPED EVERYONE ABOUT THREE TIMES PER LAP. THANKS TO VASEK POLAK BERT OHLANDER AND MILT MINTER FOR BRINGING THE CAR UP. EVERYONE SEEMED TO HAVE ALL THE TIME ON THE TRACK THEY WANTED, OR COULD STAND SATURDAY AND AS THE SUN STARTED DOWN PEOPLE HEADED INTO LANCASTER TO GET CLEANED UP FOR THE EVENINGS FESTIVITIES. 85 PORSCHENEERS ARRIVED AT THE ANTELOPE VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB FOR A DELICIOUS CHICKEN AND ROAST BEEF BUFFET, SOCIALIZING IN THE BAR AND DANCING TO A GREAT GROUP WHOSE NAME I CAN’T REMEMBER. AFTER DINNER NICK STAGGERED UP TO THE ROSTRUM AND MADE SEVERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS, INTRODUCTIONS ( INCLUDING L0U MARABLE, WEST COAST REP. FOR PCA ), AND WITTY COMMENTS AND THEN PROCEEDED TO GIVE AWAY GOBS OF DOOR PRIZES. CAROL GEDEON DREW THE W~NNING TICKETS. AFTER ASSURING HERSELF AND EVERYONE AT THE HEAD TABLE A PRIZE, THE REMAINDER WERE GIVEN OUT TO THOSE IN THE PEANUT GALLERY. DOOR PRIZES WERE DONATED BY VASEK POLAK, BILL YATES AND THE GOOD GUYS MUFFLER SHOP. THE GOOD GUYS CAME UP WITH A SPECIAL AWARD WHICH THE STEWARDS OF THE MEET DECIDED TO PRESENT TO RAY COOPER FOR HIS BRILLIANT DISPLAY OF OFF-ROAD RACING. IT WAS A RUBBER CHICKEN WHO

LOOKED LIKE HE’D SEEN BETTER DAYS. EVERYONE THEN RETIRED TO THE BAR AND THE DANCE FLOOR. NICK, IN A SMASHING DISPLAY OF ENTHUSIASM, WAS UP BY 8 AM SUNDAY TO MAKE IT 2 DAYS IN A ROW~ HE WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE ON SICK CALL FOR A WEEK TO RECOUPERATE. AFTER GOING THROUGH "NORMAL DELAY" ROUTINE AGAIN WE OPENED THE TRACK ABOUT 9 AM FOR PRACTICE. PRACTICE WENT SMOOTHLY AND TIMED RUNS WERE STARTED ABOUT 11:30. EVERYONE LOOKED REAL FAST ESPECIALLY TERRY PUTNAM WHO HAD HIS 912 FLYING, LITERALLY, RIGHT OFF TURN 5 AND THROUGH THE BUMPS AND DITCHES ALMOST DOWN TO TURN i. TERRY WAS UNDERSTANDABLY SHOOK OVER THE SITUATION. THOUGH NOT BENT HIMSELF, THE CAR SPORTED A WILLOW SPRINGS SPECIAL INSTANT DECAMBERING JOB AND VARIOUS DINGS AND BULGES, MOSTLY ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. EVERYONE ELSE GOT THROUGH OKAY AND THE LAST CAR WENT THROUGH ABOUT HALF AN HOUR BEFORE DARK. MANY QUESTIONS CAME UP DURING THE DAY ABOUT CLASSIFICATION. IT SEEMED A LOT OF CARS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RUNNING IN MODIFIED CLASSES WERE RUNNING IN STOCK CLASSES. THE ERROR WAS ON OUR PART SINCE IN ALL THE ~ASES WE KNEW OF THE DRIVER STATED THE MODIFICATIONS AND THEN WAS PUT IN THE WRONG CLASS. THIS RESULTED IN MUCH CONFUSIDN AND ARDUING AND WAS NEVER REALLY RESOLVED AT THE TRACK. TUESDAY NIGHT NICK AND I WENT THROUGH ALL THE REGISTRATION FORMS AND TECH SHEETS AND PUT EVERYONE WHO WAS OBVIOUSLY OUT OF CLASS INTO THEIR PROPER CLASS. THE OFFICIAL RESULTS AS PUBLISHED IN THIS ISSUE OF PORSCHERAMA INDICATE THESE CHANGES. WE HAD 107 ENTRIES, 70 RAN FOR TIMES ON SUNDAY. WE LOST MONEY ON THE DINNER-DANCE BECAUSE WE HAD TO GUARANTEE I00 DINNERS AND ONLY 85 C~4E. THE "HUNGRY DAWG" HOT DOG STAND, DAWN WAUGAMAN AND CAROL JACKSON, PROPRIETORS, SURVIVED A SURPRISE ATTACK BY THE KERN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO ONCE AGAIN COME THROUGH AND MAKE A SUBSTANTIAL PROFIT, MORE THAN ENOUGH TO PAY OFF THE LOSS ON THE DINNER-DANCE. ONCE AGAIN WE GOT A LOT OF HELP FROM PEOPLE WHO DON’T BELONG TO THE CLUB. SPECIAL THANKS TO BOB RHINE OF LANCASTER FOR MANY FAVORS, THE "HI-DESERT YAKKERS" CB CLUB FROM EDWARD’S WHO PROVIDED US WITH COMMUNICATIONS BOTH DAYS, BRUCE ROBERTS, THE PARTS MAN FROM CUTRIGHT WHO WORKED HIS TAIL OFF AT THE PRE-TECH, ALL DAY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MORNING IN TECH AT THE TRACK AND WAS SEEN CHARGING AROUND ON DICK SEWARD’S MINI-BIKE ASSISTING THE TIMERS g SCORERS. THERE WERE FAR TOO MANY CLUB PEOPLE INVOLVED TO START NAMING NAMES BUT YOU KNOW WHO THEY WERE, THE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE ALWAYS WORKING FOR THE CLUB, WITHOUT THIS GROUP THERE WOULDN’T BE A PORSCHE CLUB MUCH LESS A WILLOW SPRINGS. THANKS ALSO TO THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE EVENT A LITTLE EASIER ON THE CLUB FINANCIALLY AND MORE FUN FOR THOSE ATTENDING; VASEK POLAK FOR A CARLOAD OF DOOR PRIZES FOR THE DINNER, BILL YATES FOR

MORE DOOR PRIZES, HARRY SEREN0 AND THE "GOOD GUYS" WHO BROUGHT THEIR MOBILE MUFFLER SHOP MIT AIR COMPRESSOR OUT TO THE TRACK, ALSO DONATED A BUNCH OF TURKEYS FOR DOOR PRIZES AND CAME UP WITH A DOZEN REAL NEAT TOOL SETS TO BE PRESENTED TO SOME OF THE HARDEST WORKERS AT THE NEXT MEETING. TROPHY DONORS INCLUDED DON BURNS VW-PORSCHE WHO SPONSERED THE BIG, BEAUTIFUL, FAST TIME OF THE DAY TROPHY. CLASS TROPHIES WERE SPONSERED BY WESTERN PORSCHE PARTS~ RALPH CUTRIGHT PORS~HE, AND PORSCHOP ENTERPRISES. ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE A WHILE BEFORE ALL THE FIGURES ARE IN~ IT LOOKS LIKE THIS YEAR’S WILLOW SPRINGS EVENT WILL BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL EVER HELD BY PCA-LA. INITIAL COMPUTATIONS SHOW A NET P~0FIT EXCEEDING $500." SIDE BENEFITS INCLUDE A NEW FOUR CAR TIMER AND PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM FOR THE CLUB. ~ LEARNED A LOT THIS YEAR AND HOPEFULLY WHAT WE LEARNED WILL HELP US TO PUT ON AN EVEN BETTER EVENT NEXT YEAR. THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED MAKE THE EVENT THE SUCCESS IT WAS. (SPECIAL MENTION GOES TO BOB COGEN WHO MANAGED TO BACK INTO THE ONLY TREE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT). JOE SCHNEIDER, EVENT CHAIRMAN

1968

the busy pre-tech inspection\at Allred Bros., the good food g ~njoyable meeting at the Picwick Terrace Room, the fantastic ~eather & good times at Willow Springs~ and the interesting transmission tech session ~ Boggs ~ McBurney are only one month’s worth of our successful activities. If you missed any one of these events, it is an unfortunate bit of history. Your chance to make up.for any absences comes on the 21st of this month when PCA-LA presents GRAND FINALE ’68 at the La Canada Sountry Club. Your last chance to buy tickets will probably be at the December 9th meeting. Most of the people who always have a good time already have tickets, so make plans now mnd BE THERE. PROJECT

CEP

Thanks to the need at Willow Springs and the hard work of some dedicated experts, we now have a complete portable P.A. system and a portable set of ~ time clocks to use at future events (like the Apple Valley Slalom in January). Thanks go to Dale 8oyd for locating the P.A. systmm components. The timer was designed by Paul Magaris, with Roger Wagner supplying the circuit and parts for the light beam trigger. Other members have been supporting project CEP also. 0wen Champion donated another 120 clean pylons plus some rubber blankets and specially made jack socket pads to help withtech inspections. Lewis Pulley presented the club with a beautiful first aid kit which we hope won’t ever be needed. Dale Boyd re-painted the rally check point signs. Bob Briffett built 2 collapsible tables which were used at Willow Springs. Ron Ramage procured a 12 ft. square tent which served as Hungry Dawg headquarters at Willow. ~any thanks to these hard working members of our club. Curt Kuebler, President
