TEASER FOR

JULY

A fussy PORSCHE owner was told that 7 of his 8 new stainless steel pushrods are equal in weight but that the eighth was slightly heavier than the rest. Explain how he was able, using only a balance scale, to find the heaviest pushrod in only 2 weighings. The most concise solution received by July llth at: PCA Box 66515 Los Angeles, 90066 ~ wins an appropriate award for its sender at the July 13th DINNER/DANCE BLAST. //k_~

/

Correct solutions %o %he

were received

Allan Crane, Paul Magaris, Glenn Mulligan and A1 Gray. A1 Gray’s winning solution follows below; his prize was an oil filter cartridge courtesy of Royze, Inc., of Inglewood. With 14 given items and two unknowns of 25 classifications, a table is indicated with 5 vertical spaces, one for each PORSCHE and 5 space columns for color, nationality, type tire and competition numbers. By filling each space in this order, this intriguing problem was solved. The given item no. 9 seats %he Swissman. in %he firs% car on the grid. Item no. i~ places the yellow car second and as he discourses freely with this man we can assume the driver is %he German on Continental Radials (~). No. 5 has the green PoPsche ahead of %he read and by no. i the American is in a white whistler and must either be Third or fifth. Assuming the Yankee third, mark your table (by item no. 8) with Semperit tires. So the first car must be silver and no. 7 makes "18" his competition number. The English, I’ve heard, consider %heir oPiKinal green unlucky so the Englishman is fifth on the Erid in red and his number is ~2 (from item 13) his tires are Goodyear G.P. (tip 3).

Now, the Dutchman is fourth in a green Carrera speedstem (tip no. 2) No. ll item puts a Targa in second so (item ~10) macing number 00 is second or foumth. Assuming second and the 904 (drool) in number one position, we have the types of thimd and fifth unknown. Placing the 912, no. 35, as thimd in the table (fmom #6) the fourth car driven by the Dutchman must be tagged lll and has Dunlop times (12). Youm table now shows 2 empty spaces and the answers: Englishman is in the RSK Spydem and the Swissman pmefems Michelin X times. Solution by: A1 Gmay

Orange Coast

gave a party

! !

Saturday night, June 8th, PCA-OC presented a champagne/spaghetti dinner party at the home of Mr. $ Mms. Geomge Reeves in Santa Ana. The cost was $3.00 per pemson. All the champagne and Red Mountain wine you could drink and barrels of spaghetti weme offered fom refmeshments. Door prizes, racing movies and plenty of enjoyable conversation were the primamy night events. PCA-LA’ers Ce Ce Moutes ~ Nick Friesen, Yoka and Peter Luelsdorf, Mary and Don Morris, Dick Kodani, Shelley and Ron Ramage took advantage of the evenings festivities and all endulged in food and drink. The swimming pool was off limits this year, I understand last year Bill Waugaman decided to cool off around midnight. Candlellt tables and red checked tablecloths gave the whole proceedings a tmuly delightful air. Although several LAer’s had to be carried away and mysterious chairs kept falling over backwards, all agreed it was a night to memembem. The Los Angeles Region thanks Orange Coast for this invitation to share their evening.

IULY TECH MEETING Wan~ ~0 know ~he difference between a belted bias tire and a radial ply ti~e? It’s no secret %hat tires are primarily responsible for lap times dropping year after year. A representative from Pirelli will discuss and explain the differen~ typres of tires available for sports cars. Meet at Boggs and McBurney Auto Parts, 11650 Santa Monica Blvd., W.L.A. at 8 Wednesday, July 24th. Also, bring along your ideas on burglar alarms for Porsches. Roger Wagner, Tech Chrm!%.

MAY TECH MEETING The MAY TECH MEETING was held at VW Pacific, Culver City, where the topic of the 1968 VW fuel injection was adequately covered by their staff. A near record of PORSCHE Pushers attended to learn a little more about the unique VW system That will most likely someday find its way to PORSCHE. In the corridor outside the lecture room were several cut-away models of PORSCHE transaxles/engine assemblies (with chrome wheels even) that were almost worth the trip all by themselves. Interesting facts were learned, the "bug" will never get the FI system with its present blower design, fuel in~ection ratio cannot be tampered with, trouble shooters can be a matter of minutes by trained personnel, etc. I know that I came home with a new respect for VW’s in general and I’m sure everyone else did as well.

AN EXPERIMENT In a quest fom a good ovemall madial stmeet time fom my 911 to meplace the mathem expensive, hamsh miding Fimestone Phoenix PII0 times I chose the Continental "The Wild One" RaPIW madials based on good mepomts fmom 356 B ~ C ownems. I meplaced only the meam two womnout Pll0s with the Continentals fom the mecent Rivemside time tmials, as the fmonts weme almost new. The mesults weme vemy disappointinE. With a liEht bmeeze blowinE acmoss the stmaightaway the cam was highly unstable ovem 110 mph. Theme was no sudden unpmedictable bmeakaway in the meam. Howevem the meam bmoke away quite easily leading to a vicious ovemsteeming condition. The mesults heme may be compamed with pme¯ vious expemiences at Rivemside. With all ~ Pll0s theme was a slight amount of ovemsteem. A 15mm meam anti-sway bam was installed in both cases. Time pmessumes weme vam:ied fmom a base of 35 psi meam and 30 psi fmont. No siEnificant impmovement mesulted until the Continentals weme swapped to the fmont. Stability and handling were then almost compamable to having all 4 Phoenixes. The mide with normal pmessumes now has the desimed smoothness. Theme is also mome gmowl fmom the Continentals below 32 mph. The gmip of the Phoenix times is such that whole chunks of tmead weme tomn fmom the $50. times after sevemal fast laps. Sevemal conclusions may be dmawn heme: i) The Phoenix times have a bettem dmy gmip on the 911. 2) Use macing times in macing events. 3) Pay attention to the factomy mecommendations. The RAPI~ is appamently not POAC appmoved fop 911 semies despite Continentals advemtisinE. See Pano Apmil ’68 fop 900 semies, appPoved times. 4) Don’t mix bmands of times. All madials ape not the same. Many thanks to Joe SchneideP fop locating a low cost source of hamd to find adjustable shocks fop my 1955 Speedstem. The meam shocks weme changed in 1956 and latem models. A set of 4 Gabmiel A~us~o~a~ic #W5037 used on ’56 and later front suspensions did the job. Tech Chaimman RogeP Wagner

THINGS WERE GREAT AT THE PCA-OC’S "JUNE BUG SLALOM", JUNE t6, JUST ASK PETER LUELSDORF. THAT SEEMS TO BE THE THING TO DO SAYS DAWN WAUGAMAN, WHO CALLED HIM AT 12:)0 THAT SUNDAY NITE TO FIND OUT HOW SHE DID THAT DAY.

CONGRATULATIONS to PCAer Myron Kagan and his bride Nancy: They were married in Short Hills, New Jersey on June 8th.

Tech Chairman Wagner’s well organized fuel injection session at VW Pacific was well attended and resulted in a well infommed group of Porscheneers. Except that the Factory representative would not comment on the possibility of fuel injected Porsches for the U.S. market, as expected. The June meeting was an entertaining success thanks To Bruce Munch’s unique coverage of European auto racing highliKhTs. Bruce’s excellent color photos of winning cars and candid close-ups of famous drivers were a rare Treat. The July meeting at Don Ricardo’s home, The evening of Saturday~ The 13Th of July, will be a bigger blast Than the ~Tz Showdown. With more of That good food, plenty of drinks, and live music, local Porsche Pushers will be precisely parallel parked all around the perimeter of Ricardo’s pad. All our petite Porsche pets (you gals, That is) will be there in summer finery, so take note of the dinner reservation form, attached To Porscherama,sen4 it in, and BE THERE.

RUMORS The rumor that fuel in~ecTion will be available as standard equipment on the 911 series in 1969 gets stronger every day. I also have heard ~rom several sources that the front suspension has been ~edesigned and l~" wheels will be s~andard. Roger Wagner, Tech Chrmn. All components for the first Three digits of the timer have been purchased. Assembly and Testing of same will follow. These first elements will be shown with the readout units in operation at least by The August meeting. The next item to be procured is a high power, battery portable PA system. If no one donates a yell-box to the club, we may have to buy one. Curt Kuebler, PRES.

&N EDITOI:tlAL WHAT DOES PCA MEAN TO ME? I’ve asked myself this and I’m sure others have answered the same question for themselves. And probably no two answers the same. Different people have asked me how I can find time to put into this newsletter and I must admit there are more than a few midnight sessions each month, but if my efforts result in more members enjoying the benefits of the club then it is well worth my time. Also, to those of you who have never participated in the running of this or any other organization, it is enjoyable work, rewarding work, if events, meetings, hours of planning and scheduling are a big success. I hope in the future that all the PCA members can have the experience, the feel of accomplishment that comes from heading a successful group. Truly I play a small part in this active group. I’m a non-voting member of the board ( by the way, every member is a non-voting member of the board ), but I am there to voice my opinion at the board meetings. Talking about active, hard working members, take a look thru this issue, last issue, every issue for the last year and you see the same names repeated. Organizers, planners, these are people from many types of occupations, age groups, some are and some are not married. Just ask any one of them how they enjoy the PCA and what do they get out of it. I would also like to say a few well choseD words about the new PORSCHERAMA. Undoubtedly you’ve noticed new advertisements in the last few issues. These people are local businessmen who would like to help the club as well as spread their names around. If the opportunity arises that you may need their services, try and patronize them. They are doing the club a service, let’s do the same for them. Thank Ron Ramage itor.
