It was a lonely Wednesday. And PSA was "giving me a lift" tO San J ..... d back on busi ..... My mind had been hard on an event the day before. So the ever present paper and pencil were unholstered. With a view for the gods just one foot away, and 24,000 feet above the realities of the real estate, I started scribbling.
¯ To paraphrase Ted West in Sports Car Graphic: "If you don’t like to take yourself so seriously, stay the Hell away from a lonely round trip flight to San Jose on a lonely Wednesday." Keep smiling.
Was witness to an accident yesterday. At least almost a witness. I heard the crunch and looked up to witness two careening, relatively uncontrolled Volkswagens disintegrating towards the curb. I say relatively uncontrolled because neither car appeared to have a driver. Time froze for everyone in the area except for the stricken. They crashed about the intersection and finally came to rest at the roadside 30 yards or so apart. Passersby stood, long since motionless, agonizing over whether they dared commit themselves; whether they could stand the blood and gore which assuredly attended this cataclysm; how heroic they couId rea!ly be at this supreme moment by just rushing in and,,.ff they onIy knew what to do.
’
The clatter had died. Ail was silence, save deafening sobs from one of the cars. A young storekeeper was moving towards me from behind, asking if someone might be injured. I said something insignificant and we ran across the street against the traffic through the bystanders and beat everybody to the scene. And we found two lovely children inside. The passenger, about 14, bleeding slightly from the forehead where she had impacted the windshield. The driver, not much more than 16, apparently unhurt but sobbing out tears of shock, attendant in all life crisis. Her mind had just witnessed the immutable proof of Newton’s laws. Laws she probably didn’t understand. And in a grandiose experiment which she never thought could happen to her. In an instant. It couldn’t be avoided. It was so silly. If that other car was only two more feet to the right it wouldn’t be going to...and then reality blew her mind as all the dynamics that computers simulate and the testers t~st and the National Safety Council hollers about started. And her little sister bored a hole in the windshield. The other child driving the other ’wagen had fared better. She would be fairly clearly "to blame," as Allstate or State Farm or somebody else might conclude. Her surprise came in the middle of a dubious left turn. Impact before she knew it. And she was, in a noisy millesecond or two, transported to the passenger seat. Viola, a driverless vehicle. She kept cool though. Maybe it was her second time. She secured the steering wheel in her left hand and guided what was left into the curb. Little sister looked up at me with a questioning smile on her face. She had her hand on her forehead. One look at the windshield told the story. "How ya doin?" "I can’t feel anything bad." And a smile that could only mean she saw Daddy, the Lone Ranger, Billy Batson, and Pope John all wrapped up in one smiling, concerned, mustache laden face.
Dear Editor,
I removed a small piece of glass from her forehead and said it didn’t look bad and helped her out and charged across the street to see if the gendarmes had been notified. And probably nobody noticed the tears and so what.
1 am a devoted Porsche owner and a loyM reader of Porscherama. I am alsoa graduate s~dent in c~ema at Re University of Sou~ern California. I have been writing film criticism for the past year and a~ended a pre~ew screening recently Rat would def~itely interest our "Pusher" colleagues.
So shortly two local patrol cars arrived with much flashing and howling and tire shreaking. And what looked like Rex Reason and Ed "Kooky" Burns leaped out and did a truly supberb job of cooling the scene. And the girls began to talk and relax. Little sister got some first aid. "Ed" and "Rex" mumbled all the requisite stuff about Code 91’s and 47’s and 32’s and so on. And when a real witness who witnessed the whole debacle volunteered I excused myself and went back to being an engineer, I wish I had been a witness. Maybe I could have helped. And why the Hell didn’t somebody ever make those beautiful children use a seatbelt?
The film, "The Racing Scene", is pretty well expl~ned ~ the critic~ piece enclosed. It has not been released as yet, but ~at is scheduled for mid-summer. Maybe the "Pano" could run it as a different type article from Rose Key usually run. The idea of such an article orig~at~g from a regular L.A. Region member might get it printed quicker. lhopeto write more ~ film cititcism, and, ff youl~e, I will send you an~h~gthatsmacks of rac~g or ~e auto scene. Sincerely, Joe Bridges

WOMENS REVENGE I
May 27th at the world famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Los Angeles Region, with the help of 24 loyal Porsche shiny machines successfully routed the southwest parking lot, laying a thin deposit of rubber in a certain pattern around the area. Nine356’ers, eight 900 series, three open cars and even three ladles tried their hand at the course as layed out by the fearless activities chairman, Ron Ramage with the help of three of the women members and with the help of his famous Morris Minor Pickup, painted L.A. Region yellow started early in the morning rain. A total of 58 pylons were displaced during timing while Bill Mclnerney, AI Gray, and John Durham manned the sunny vigil to keep the day alive. Curt Kuebler broughtthe club lights and manipulated the timing with his usual accuracy. Fastest time of the day was turned in by Dean Kirk in his Speedster at 1:54.79 with I pylon. Slowest time was turnedin byMaryAnn Ks!bach at 2:39.90 with 3 pylons (how do you think I stay in first place in ladies competition anyway?) ~ Neighboring regions Orange Coast and POC were present. What it boiled down to was that there were very poor communications between the board of directors, the raffle chairman and the general membership. For this a general apology is due the membership. So that the misunderstanding does not re[~aat itself, whenever a raffle is held, the prize will be raffled off that night. If will no__t be held over for the next meeting. At the July meeting a special raffle will be held where June tickets will be honored. If a July raffle is to be held, then separate tickets will be sold for it. The July slalom has been postponed to a future date to be announced. The PCA petition to use the police skid pad at Terminal Island was rejected by the L.A. Harbor Cormnission (bad past experiences with other clubs). We are now looking for another location.

BOARD SPLINTERS from the President and Scribe The June board meeting was much quieter than the May meeting. Six board members and three interested members spent most of the time discussing the general conduct of membership meetings and whether or not to raffle. Also discussed were our plans for Volume III of "Up-fixin". The Sacramento region also wants to publish the next edition. PCA-LA will contact the Sacramento region for resolution.

Porsche Pushers’ Polish Picnic Navagational Rallye & Concours
Saturday, June 27, 1970 was an historic day in rallying. The PCALA had its first annual Porsche Pushers’ Polish Picnic Navagationai (sort of) Rallye and Concours. It began at Ships Restaurant in Westwood. Four (is that all?) cars showed up for what was promised as a novel affair. It was. It began with a LeMans start. Navigators and drivers ran for their cars, jumped in, grabbed their instructions, started their engines and discovered that they did not know where to go. The first directions required looking up the coordinates of Tahiti in a world atlas. Cars staggered off in various directions as navigators yelled epithets. The rallye degenerated from there. There was a bit of rhyme to be deciphered, an anogram, a dead end or two. Legs took the drivers on board a ship in the Marina, to the Audubon Center in Whittier Narrows to a little league game (7-2 in the 5th) at Azcatecas Park in Azusa up San Gabriel Canyon and finally to a picnic along a pretty stream in a side canyon. It all started when Solvang was put over a month. Ron Ramage called me to help square away a picnic and the PPPP resulted. Some errors in the instructions (now standard fare for our rallyes) resulted in cars off in odd directions, but everyone found the checkpoints except Peter & Yoka Leulsdorf who were not told where the picnic was.
This was not retribution for the Oktoberfest.
Our
apologies.

up the canyon. A few yards up, we heard cries of help. Looking to our left we spotted a small boy, clutching hard and a foothold , on a cliff several hundred feet above the rocky canyon floor. We started to climb after him. I picked a safer and more circuitous route and arrived in time to watch Ron edge part way down a verticle shale slope with shear drop and pull the boy to safety. Real Heroism! The canyon walls that he climbed were loose and shaley with no decent footholds, rocks that broke away, gravel, cactus, and brittle bushes that broke away or pulled out at any use. The canyon was straight down below. A slight error would have meant certain injury or death. Ron is that kind of guy, he didn’t even stick around to receive thanks from the anxious parents.
to Mary Ann Kalbach."
The team of Friesen & Gedeon made first.
Only 30 minutes slower
than the allotted time. On their heels were Sam and Jo Sue Goldenberg on their first rallye. The distaff side of Gedeon and Friesen followed in an Oldsmobile (they don’t call George and Nick the Sir Walter Raleigh twins for nothing) and last (there’s an extra "Crystal" sign you d!cln’t know about that takes you to Monrovia) the Kalbachs.
We wandered up the canyon, listening tothe music of water on rocks and tree toads, enjoying the beauty of the trees and wildlife in the warm setting sun to end the day.
Bob Cogen
Peter and Yoka manned the checkpoint at the "Nepenthe" in the Marina, Corky Kirk did double service at the Bel Air checkpoint and the finish, Mickey & Dorahyn Harris filmed the start and then manned the Audobon center. (closed, no birds allowed in June). Ron acted as starter and then reffed a little league game with Kathy. Chris Chabala and I ate Tacos under the Mexican Consulate sign at the Old Plaza and then acted as sweep car. Dave Kalbach won a giant salami for the concours and we all settled down for a picnic lunch--chicken, beer, potato salad, cole slaw, sandwiches, fruit, cookies, etc. Followed by stream wading and F risbee tossing.

L’TE( HNIQUE INADEQUATE LIGHTING??? by Les Gurmarson
A SPECIAL TRIP-Roger Wagaer While on a 4000 mile trip through the Rockies to clean out the mind and the engine, my speedometer quit in the middle of the Utah desert. A close examination revealed the cable bearing seized in the speedometer head snapping the cable. The service advisor at Bob Hagestad Porsche-Audi in Denver told me that this seizure is quite common on 900 series cars. (a U.S.A. re-built speedo is available from the P-A dealers on an exchange basis at nominal cost). After discussing the problem later with several L.A. speedo repair shops, they say that VDO is supplying some instruments to Porsche with little or no lubrication and insufficient bearing clearance. There is also sufficient reservoir for the lubricant. These shops have several fixes which include installing an oilite bu~ing. No lubrication schedule is given in the owner’s manual. The repair shops advise against the owner l~bi~g the bearing as the lube may work its way inside and goo up the works. Instead, they recommend to just wait until it siezes and they’ll be glad to fix it. This may not agree with preventative maintenance fans so a touch of Lubriplate, Molykote or speedo cable lube every 30, 000 miles on the bearing may do the trick. Speedo repair including calibration ranges $9-$18 in the L.A. area. The needle waver at 20-40 m.p.h, can sometimes be eliminated with a custom made cable from heavy duty aircraft cable. Only two different cable lengths are made for the 911-912 cars. The fairy tale that interchangeable 911 parts are readily available from your authorized dealer was again brought to mind when the mechanic told me my 911 (1965 1/2) required a third length about 3 inches longer. After two attempts at having a custom made cable fabricated in Denver, I was on my way and thus was in a more favorable position to joust with the Colorado radar cars. WIPER BLADE CONVERSION by Bill Curson St. Louis Someone who would like to remain anonymous has come to my rescue. This article is only for th(~se who will modify their car to save money. After paying $8.98 for a set of wiper blades, I, for one, will try the conversion, To modify any 900 Series (I’am sure it will work on 356B and C’s also) windshield wiper to accommodate American type Trico P.R. 13-2 blades. (The cost of these blades is $1.57 at Target Stores and when the time comes all you have to do is replace the rubbers for less than that.) Here are the five easy steps: 1. Remove windshield wiper arm assembly from mount by removing bolt at cowling, 2. Using a hacksaw, cut 3/8" off the end of the wiper blade 3.
Slide P.R. 13-2 blade onto the arm and mark where the lock pin (wiper blade pin that holds blade so it does not come off when wipers are in use) will be located. Using 1/8" drill drill hole through arm.
4.
Insert blade onto arm making sure wiper blade pin fits into the 1/8" hole. Assemble wiper arm and blade onto mount.
¯ 5.
Early 900 series Porsches (late 1965 through 1968) have inadequate tall and side lighting. Numerous articles have been written which show how to remedy this situation; however, I have noticed that many members of the OCR have not incorporated these modifications. Perhaps this is because the whole thing seems a bit too complicated when all the detailed procedures are written out and accompanied with electrical wiring diagrams. Since I believe that it is extremely important to make this modification, I’ll try a new approach; that is, by indicating what we are trying to accomplish rather than dictating at length, complex, "blow-by-blow" procedure. To increase light on both tail and side (front and rear), you are going to add low-intensity light (one which is on continuously when lights are on) to the existing turn-signal lights (front and rear). This is done by replacing the existing rear and front turn-signal sockets and bulbs (tail light/stop light bulbs are used). If you are confused about which lights are which, operate them when the light assemblies are removed from the body. Leave the wires attached unless they must be removed for soldering, etc. Comnect the high intensity light of the new socket to the turn signal wire. The low intensity light must be connected by a new wire with a new spade lug connector to the tail light/parking light connector at the socket. Soldering (using rosin-core solder only. DO NOT USE ACID CORE OR PASTE FLUX) the new wire to the tail/parking light spade ing. At this point seems to be the best solution although using a dual spade lug adaptor like is used On the ignition coil and a new spade lug is all right. Note: The dual socket has been made much that it could not be inadvertently put into the single socket by putting projects (keys) on the side of the socket. These projects must be clipped off. That’s about all there is to it. Now try all the lights, parking, turn etc., prior to re-installing the light assembly into the body. One of the problems sometimes encountered, whether this modification is made or not, is the lack of good grounding at the socket. Make sure the clip that holds the socket into the light assembly has sufficient tension, that is, it keeps the socket from moving around, because this is the ground connection for the light bulb. Also, make sure that none of the wiring terminals touch the body when assembled thereby "grounding out" the wires and blowing a fuse. Use tape if necessary.

If you are contemplating wheeling your Porsche around on wider rims, be sure your new wheels measure up to expectations. Any Pcrsche dealer will probably consult his books and immedintely propagate the misinformation about the difference in offset between the 4.5" and S. 5" rims that was originally published in the Porsche shop manual and was twoce repeated in PANORAMA. Don’t believe a word of it. A representative of the U.S. Bureau of Standards has verified the following measurements. continued on p. 16

PORSCHE Audi has what is called an "inertia reel". The wearer pulls out as much belting as needed. A single snap-on buckle secures it to the fastening point between the front seats. Adjustment of the belt is almost automatic a tug on the shoulder belt does it; excess belting retracts into the reel. In routine body movements, such a leaning across the car to open the glove compartment or reaching to tune the radio, the safety belt unrolls easily, allowing freedom to move around in the seat and does not need to be unfastened. In an emergency stop, the belt locks, holding tight, thanks to the inertia reel.
~
The reel is secured to the frame of the car. When excessive pressure is applied to the belt, the shaft on which the belt rolls moves off center and causes a rachel on the shaft to engage with teeth on the housing preventing further movement. The locking action is almost instantaneousj about a quarter of a turn of the shaft locks it tight. The inertia reel combination lap and shoulder belt is standard equipment. Will Porsche be next with the belt?
