Two e~oss-county Porsche pushers leave simultaneously from Los Angeles and Miami heading for Miami a~d Los Angeles. Each travels at a uniform, but different rate of speed. They pass each other with the customary high-beam flash and it takes 16 more hours for the westbound driver to Peach Los Angeles~ while the eastbound driver reaches Miami 36 hours after they pass. PCA Box 66515 L.A., 90066 by November 8th wins a gala award for its sender ~ the Meeting.

With apologies to those who submitted excellent solutions to the September Teaser, we must report that the writeup was misplaced just prior to publication. The winner was Allan Crane his prize was a steering wheel glove, compliments of Royze, Inc. Allan Crane, Elton Mosher, Rich Rezings and Lowell Semans each managed to find the odd piston ~ ~udging their solutions was not easy. The winning solution from Allan Crane follows: Divide the pistons into ~ sets of 3 pistons each, placing 1 set on each pan of scales. Observe the balance. Remove (ist weighing) one set, replacing it with another. 0bserve the balance. You have now located an off-weight set conraining the off-weight piston. If %he O/W set is on the scales remove (2nd weighing) one of its pistions replacing it with another piston. Observe the balance. Repeat (3rd weighinE) this one-for-one substitution (if neŠessa~y) which will pinpoint the off-weight piston .~ indicate its ~elative weigh%. If however, the 0/W set is not on the scales, add 1 piston from ~% %0 each pan. 0bse~we %he-~alance. Then remove (2nd we~Khing) either of these pistons substituting the 3rd piston from %~e O/W set for it. This will pinpoint the off-weight piston and indiea%e its relative weigh%.

Did you ever realize that a club like PCA-LA thrives on enthusiasm? A little bit of the contagious-type enthusiasm injected regularly results in increased pleasure for all members plus manyfold return in satisfaction for those who invest the time and effort. A new team of club members will soon be selected to run with the batons of leadership. All members are eligible to t~y out for the team, but not all are capable. When the Nominating Committee invites you to try out for the new Board of Directors, be assured that you are capable of running with a winning team. And your enthusiasm as a candidate will ensure you a spot on the Board for 1969. Curt Kuebler, President

Those who missed the OKTOBERFEST missed a good thing. A full OX roasting over an open fire, visit to a Brookside Winery in Guasti, a very nice drive down Carbon Canyon, plenty of good German Beer and Knackwurst, Bratwurst, authentic Oom-Pah type old world music, dancing, and all the company of the PCAer’s who participated. It was fun.

tech tips Oil consumption on some 66/67 912’s is reported to be 250 to 500 miles per quart. In most cases the trouble can be traced to faulty piston oil control. The cure is to drill an additional 4 holes in the oil ring grooves to allow the excess oil to drain back to the crankcase. Also the exhaust rocker arms are throwing an excessive amount of oil around under the valve covers. This excess oil is leaking down the valve guides into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust. The oil holes in the rocker arms should be plugged. Labor for the above work is $i00 to 200. Work should be done along with the next valve grind.

??

Beware of those automatic garage door openers. I parked my 911 halfway in the garage with the door open. Something triggered the~°~2x-~ thing to close. Before I couid run back to shut it off it had caved in my top. The so called safety clutch didn’t stop it. Fortunately the top popped back in place leaving me a small reminder to never trust those electronic devils again. Roger Wagner, tech chairman If your 356 falters or dies completely and the fuel system is suspect, don’t forget that the fuel valve strainer may be clogged. The valve is attached directly to the bottom of the gas tank and is accessable either from under the dash (356A) or from beneath the car between the front wheels (356C). Make sure the reserve lever is in the "Zu" (off) position before removing the filter can and have a fresh rubber gasket handy so no leaks occur when reassembly is complete.Curt Kuebler, president
