Jesse Alexander.
Jesse Alexander is a Motorsports Legend. One of his latest books is titled Porsche Moments, and on Saturday August 9th this year, we got the opportunity to share some moments with Jesse Alexander at his beachfront studio in Carpinteria.

With the studio as the destination of our first poker run, it seemed fitting that the player with the best hand would be rewarded with a copy of Jesse’s book Porsche Moments and that it would be signed by Jesse. And that’s exactly what event organizer Martin Holford made happen for this, our inaugural poker run event. The run was very pleasant with playing cards distributed before leaving, then at a stop near Cal Continued on Page 4.
The lucky winner!

Since August 1, customers who purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Porsche will receive a company backed 2-year or 50,000m / 80,000km (whichever comes first) limited warranty that mirrors the new car limited warranty coverage. Additionally, for customers who buy cars with a balance of the New Car Limited Warranty Coverage, this remaining balance will be added to the new Certified Pre-owned Limited Warranty coverage. Customers will only be responsible for normal wear and tear components such as brake pads, wiper blades and regularly scheduled maintenance. Twenty-four hour roadside assistance is also included in the pre-owned package. "This upgrade to the CPO program will add even more value – and peace of mind - for these important customers, many of whom are just entering the brand; obviously, we want to create a very positive Porsche experience with these new customers,’" said Kevin Harvey, Porsche Cars North America’s Manager, Pre-owned Operations. Harvey said the CPO program at Porsche, which is now five years old, is growing in success each year, and this year he expects record results. In the last five years, Porsche Dealer pre-owned sales penetration has grown from 16 percent of the total Porsche Pre-owned market to 33 percent. Only the best used Porsches are selected as Certified Pre-Owned Porsches. Every certified used car undergoes a rigorous 111-point inspection and a detailed reconditioning process by Porsche –trained technicians whose goal is to bring the car back to new as close as possible. Jesse Alexander (cont.) State University at Channel Islands, and then finally after reaching Jesse Alexander’s studio in Carpinteria. Being internationally renowned has its benefits. The city of Carpinteria coned-off the road across the street from the studio to afford us prime parking in what might have otherwise been a difficult parking situation.

which certainly contained even more of the same historic photography. When everyone was finished viewing all the photos and all had made their purchases, we were fortunate enough to have Jesse join us for lunch at a nearby restaurant, where he is also well-known and well-liked by the entire staff. This was especially cordial of Jesse, since he was preparing to leave later that day for Monterey and The Pebble Beach Concours and Rolex Historic Races. At lunch I was fortunate enough to be at the end of the table where Jesse was sitting and I commented to him how taken I was with a photo of Jim Clark and Colin
Our President David Altemus contemplates a purchase. He made the purchase and now owns a piece of history.
The group arrives and fills up the city-arranged parking, across the street from Alexander’s studio.
After the winning-hand presentation of the prized book, Alexander explained how one of the main activities around the studio these days is the digital archiving of all the film treasures he’s amassed over his career since the early 1950s. This is a major undertaking and one which will keep his work available for future viewers. He has help from his assistant and his wife helps him in the studio. We also learned that Jesse now shoots only digital photography with a Cannon 5D, full-frame SLR camera. Next we were allowed to roam around the studio and look at the many, many photographic prints sitting all around the studio on top of flat files
Jesse likes people. I think that’s why he takes great photos of them.
It was awe inspiring to listen to what Jesse had to say about photography, people and cars of the past 45 to 50 years of Motorsport.
Chapman (shown above - photo ©Jesse Alexander) that was on the wall behind his desk at the studio. He said that was a special moment. And it was then that I realized that “moments” were what he and other photographers were really all about. Hence the titles of two of his books — Porsche Moments and Ferarri Grand Prix Moments. Well OK, it takes some of us a little while longer to catch on than others. Shortly after that I asked him what Jim Clark was like and he said he was Continued on Page 5.

Another Porsche Moments into the hands of an appreciative viewer.
Surrounded by some of his favorite photos, Jesse Alexander is quite at home in his studio and with himself. He’s a pleasure to be around and he clearly enjoys all sorts of people. He’s interested in the world around him and the people and things in it.
Listening and answering questions This is fun!
very modest and had a great sense of humor.
Ed. Note
It’s the rendering of these “moments” that often make the difference between snapshots and photographs. Jesse Alexander creates photographs that tell stories.
By Bruce Pollock It is these Jesse Alexander kinds of events that make this such a fun activity. I grew up looking at photographs in Road & Track and other publications that were taken by Jesse Alexander, even though I don’t think I knew that then. He’s been all the places and was at all the events that had a great deal to do with shaping what would become the path or paths that I followed or pursued either on purpose or accidentally for most of the second half of the twentieth century. It is especially pleasant to see his life’s work appreciated more and more as time goes on. And even more pleasant to see how welldeserved this appreciation really is.

Recent News (cont.) Detroit ALMS Race Results from Porsche Motorsport ATLANTA – August 30 – In what has turned out to be the two hardest-fought class championship points battles in the history of the American Le Mans Series, Porsche cars and drivers edged closer to the GT2 championship with the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs finishing first and second in class. An Acura win in LMP2 gives them a four point lead in the manufacturers championship while Porsche drivers maintain a slight lead in drivers points after the Detroit Sports Car Challenge Presented by Bosch. In LMP2 class for prototypes, points leaders and defending champions Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) positioned themselves well for a class victory with good pit strategy and fast lap times when a controversial, late race penalty for avoidable contact cost the #7 Penske Porsche RS Spyder car not only a victory, but a spot on the podium. With 55 points left to be earned at the last two races, Bernhard/Dumas, who ended up fourth in LMP2, lead the Brabham/Sharp Acura drivers by four points, 159-155. With the top three positions in the class in today’s race, Acura now leads Porsche 170 – 166. In team points, the Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder team leads the Patron Highcroft Acura team 166-155.
Talking about the photos and people in them is clearly one of Jesse Alexanders favorite things.
I strongly urge that you visit Jesse’s web site: jessealexander.com. There is a video interview there that is fascinating and you get a good look at many famous photographs as well as Jesse’s
page 5
To see how much he enjoys sharing these adventures with others just makes me smile and say thank you, Jesse for all the wonderful images, and the capturing of all those “Moments.” Keep ‘em coming.
The Patrick Long/Ryan Briscoe #6 Penske Porsche RS Spyder finished fifth in LMP2, while the Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyder of Chris Dyson/Guy Smith was sixth and the Dyson team Porsche of Marino Franchitti/Butch Leitzinger eighth. The GT2 class points leaders Wolf Henzler and Joerg Bergmeister (both from Germany) scored their fourth win of the season in their #45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Henzler, who started the race from the pole, led the first part of the race before turning the car over to Bergmeister, and only felt competition from the Flying Lizard teammates as the Sonoma, California-based team finished the race first, second and fourth in class. The Johannes van Overbeek/Patrick Pilet #46 Flying Lizard Porsche was second in class, and the #44 Lonnie Pechnik/Martin Ragginger Flying Lizard Porsche was fourth. For Ragginger, the UPS Porsche Junior driver from Austria, it was his first American Le Mans Series race. "It was a very tight race at the beginning, with two of our cars and the two leading Ferraris noseto-tail around the track. But then our main rival, the Tafel Farnbacher/Mueller Ferrari, broke a starter motor in the pits, and the Melo/Salo Ferrari had trouble with a door that wouldn’t latch, and all of a sudden, the three Lizard Porsches were in the lead. Also, with an early fuel stop strategy, we were able to maintain our lead late in the race because we didn’t need a full Continued on Page 7.
