See You Next Year
Exciting Activities Ahead!
Let’s Make It Great!
Activities Update
by Brianna Becker, Vice-President & Newsletter Editor, PCA-LA
by Randall Blaesi, Activities Director, PCA-LA
We’ve had so many club activities in the past few months! Check the calendar here and on our website for a lot more events in the new year! At this time of year, we turn our attention to holiday cheer, as well as to voting for officers to lead our region in the coming year. These volunteers are seeking to make our club the best it can possibly be! Please take a moment to look over the ballot and then vote your choice for the elective offices represented. If you would like to participate more, and particularly if you have some experience in writing or graphic design, please let us know. We are forming a newsletter committee, and we are seeking co-editors to drive our publication to greater heights. We welcome your participation, with or without prior experience. It is perhaps the most fun and gratifying experience to help document our events.
Your region is planning to have several events that may be of interest to you. Please note that the events detailed in the emails you receive from Joe to our region members require advacne sign-ups, on www.motorsportreg.com, even if they are free, as we need an accurate headcount. Some are no cost, while others have a cost associated, which can be paid online, at the time you register. Be sure PCA National has your correct email address and postal service address. Please log in to their website at at www.pca.org and make sure. Otherwise, we cannot send out emails and our newsletter. You may also miss the Porsche Panorama, the national newsletter. The upcoming events are the Dawn Patrol Drive and Brunch at Malibu Cafe on January 17, Paradise Cove Drive and Brunch on February 13 and Modernism Week Tours on February 19-21.
We will also be forming several new committees in the coming year. Please let us know your interests, whether it be helping out with our Concours or leading a tour. We look forward to having you join us in planning and hosting events. Thanks to the many members who contributed to this issue. We love your pictures and articles, so please continue to photograph and write about events you attend! In this issue, we have a recap of our region’s latest Tech Day at Red Line Service, and our drive from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach and beyond to San Pedro. We also have photos from our recent run to the Santa Barbara pier for breakfast with the PCA Santa Barbara Region, and our Oktoberfest celebration at Swiss Chef. We also have an article about our recent lively run to Paramount Ranch. Thank you, as always, for your continued participation, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon! Our Monthly Breakfast Meetings are held on the 4th Saturday of each month at the Spitfire Grill at Santa Monica Airport. Hope to see you there!! Brianna ■
There is a wide variety of activities from which to choose, so go on www.motorsportreg.com and sign up for your preference today! Some events will fill up long before the deadline, so do not wait until it is too late and miss out! If you have any suggestions for an activity, please come to our breakfast meetings on the fourth Saturday of every month, at the Spitfire Grill at the Santa Monica Airport and look for one of the board members to discuss your ideas. We usually have a board meeting after the breakfast. You may come to the board meeting and discuss your ideas. Or, you may send me an email at rblaesi@sbcglobal.net. We welcome your input. Hopefully, you will be able to assist us with actually planning and helping one of our board members to mentor you in running the event you suggest. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events, soon! Randy ■ PCA Los Angeles Region

PCA-LA Tech Day at Red Line Service
Photos by Brianna Becker
Less than a week after placing on the podium at the NASA Western States National Championships at Laguna Seca Raceway with their driver Martin Daskal and his 2008 Porsche Super Cup car, Marc Bixen and the Red Line crew hosted a Tech Day for the Porsche Club of America Los Angeles Region at their well equipped West LA facility. With the Monterey Motorsports Reunion only a couple of weeks away, and Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway later in September, this Tech Day’s topic was “Preparation for Road Trips”.
For our enjoyment, Red Line had a sampling of Red Line’s expertise in Porsche’s sports cars on display, from the earliest 356 through the latest 991’s - a restored 1958 Speedster, a Gulf Blue 1974 Carrera Targa, a 1993 RS America, and their 2008 factory Porsche Super Cup Car.
Red Line provided coffee and pastries for the early morning tech session, and there was a feel of a small Cars & Coffee gathering.
Marc also showed us his three generations of Porsche engine diagnostic computers, from the model 9288 - the first used by Porsche - affectionately known as “The Hammer”, through the latest PIWIS 2.

PORSCHERAMA | 12/2015
Marc began the Tech session discussing the importance of a few easy checks before you leave for a long road trip that can make your journey safer and more enjoyable. According to Marc, checking your oil level, carrying an extra quart of oil, and checking your tire pressures and coolant are the basics. He stressed a more proper inspection of your tires, since most Porsches’ performance alignment causes the inside of tires to wear more aggressively than the outside.

Marc then held a hugely insightful and informative Q&A. Overall, it was a very enjoyable Saturday at Southern California’s oldest Porsche-only independent shop, celebrating 40 years in Santa Monica and West LA.
We’re looking forward to Red Line’s next Tech Day, coming soon. Great information - Many thanks, Marc! ■
A tire that looks almost new towards the outside can be completely worn out on the inside, so he reminded us to make sure we look at the complete tread. Next Marc discussed the proper use of spare tires, including which wheel you should mount the spare on. He said it’s not always as convenient as putting the spare on the corner you had the flat on, and to check your owners manual for more details. Marc also demonstrated the inflation, deflation and proper use of Porsche’s space saver tire, as well as the use of Porsche’s tire sealant for cars not equipped with a spare tire, which was great for those of us who had always wondered how to use it, should the need arise!

PCA-LA Day in the South Bay
By: Harry Kraushaar, PCA-LA Board Member On a beautiful Sunday, PCA Los Angeles Region hosted a coastal driving and eating event from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach to Palos Verdes. The event consisted of four segments: meet, drive, eat, and drive. Participants were free to join with the group for any or all portions of the event.
Around 9:30am, the spacious parking lot at Ruby’s filled up with 30+ Porsches. There was definitely lots of eye candy in the lot that day.

The first group met early at the Spitfire Grill in Santa Monica for directions to Ruby’s Diner in Redondo Beach. After some friendly chatting, we started the drive. The drive to Ruby’s was freeform, with drivers splitting up and rejoining throughout the beach communities.

PORSCHERAMA | 12/2015 The breakfast at Ruby’s was great. We talked and ate quite comfortably on the patio, while keeping a watchful eye on our cars. After breakfast, our plan was to drive around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. However, with people leaving Ruby’s at different times, our procession to Palos Verdes was splintered into various groups. Most of us came together at the start of the drive around the Peninsula. The drive was scenic and beautiful. Photo by Brianna Becker

When we reached San Pedro, we gathered once more, before getting on the 110 for the return trip north. ■

We made our way up the coast in a seemingly endless line of Porsches!
Finally, we arrived at the Santa Barbara Pier.

I knew for several months that it would be a hot day, and I was so right. When I say I knew it would be a hot day, it had nothing to do with temperature, but that the PCA-LA Region was holding its Paramount Ranch drive that day. The fact that it was actually 100 degrees just made the day that much hotter. The event, sponsored by the Auto Gallery, consisted of three parts. The first part was a social session at Porsche Auto Gallery where conversation was served with doughnuts and coffee. The second part was a spirited drive through the hills of Malibu with a pit stop at Paramount Ranch. The third part was lunch at Wood Ranch hosted by Auto Gallery Porsche. Mark Bilfield, PCA-LA Region Board Member-at-Large, was in charge of planning the event, and he did a fabulous job, leaving no detail to chance, including the fabrication of bright yellow caution flags for use at the intersection of Kanan Dume and Mulholland Highway. I helped him with route testing, planning and documentation, but it was Mark who put the event together with the Auto Gallery.
Those who attended were treated to a great day. There was lots of time to ogle other members’ cars and the Auto Gallery Porsche cars before the drive. We had a great cross section of 911s, a few 356s and a few Boxsters and Caymans.
The drive through the Malibu hills was spectacular. We left Auto Gallery and then headed south on Topanga Canyon before turning on to Mulholland Drive and then Mulholland Highway. We stayed on Mulholland Highway until we reached Las Virgenes Canyon, which we took towards Pacific Coast Highway. Coming down Las Virgenes, the ocean views were magnificent. At PCH, we headed north towards Mulholland Highway. The ride up PCH was great. There were only a handful of cars and bicycles on the road and we seemed to cruise through most of the lights. Just before reaching Mulholland Highway, I felt the need to pass two slower cars. Big mistake. By the time I got back into the right lane, I was at Mulholland Highway, needing to make a tight right hand turn onto a narrow two road. I opted to stay straight on PCH and make a U-turn and come back. It was somewhat ironic that the only missed turn on the route was made by me, the guy who planned it and was leading the run group.
15
PORSCHERAMA | 12/2015
The ride back Mulholland Highway all the way to Paramount Ranch had lots of twists, some tight, some sweeping. Once past Kanan Dume, we went down the Snake, a seriously curvy downhill portion of the road, and past the Rock House before coming up to the turn off for Paramount Ranch. Paramount Ranch has played a huge part in early to mid 20th century movie and television production, and for a short time, auto racing. Several movies, including “A Farewell to Arms” and “Gunfight at the OK Corral”, were shot there, as were some of my favorite TV shows, including “The A-Team”, “Dukes of Hazard”, and “Rin Tin Tin”. One of the last shows shot there was “Dr. Quinn Medicne Woman”. For a few years, until a series of fatalities occurred, Paramount Ranch was used for automobile racing.
We spent about half an hour wandering around the ranch, looking at the few remaining movie and TV sets and a few parts of the track that can still be seen.
16
PORSCHERAMA | 12/2015
We departed Paramount Ranch and drove a few miles to Wood Ranch for a great BBQ lunch and more conversation. It was a hot day in every sense of the word, made all the more special by the sponsorship of Auto Gallery and the PCA members who attended â–

For the First Time, Porsche Delivers Over 200,000 Cars STUTTGART. Dec 9, 2015./ Porsche PR/ Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG has delivered 209,894 cars worldwide from January to November 2015. This corresponds to a 24% increase in comparison to the same period in 2014. Thus, for the first time in the history of the company, Porsche has handed over to customers more than 200,000 vehicles. As early as last year, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker had set a record with a total of 189,849 deliveries the world over. ■
World’s First Porsche Center for Classic Cars to Open GELDERLAND/STUTTGART, Nov 25, 2015 /Porsche PR/ The world’s first Porsche Classic Centre is just about to open: from 26 Nov 2015, the Porsche Classic Centre Gelderland, just outside of Arnhem/Netherlands, will be offering services for classic cars of all ages. This is the first time that service, workshop and sales exclusively for the classic sports cars have been brought together under one roof. A small number of additional certified Porsche Classic Centres are set to follow around the world. More than 70 per cent of the vehicles ever produced by Porsche are still running today. To ensure that these classic cars receive optimum support and overhaul facilities, Porsche is establishing an international dealer and service network with some 100 centres to reach completion by 2018. These Porsche centres will provide support for sports cars of earlier eras in addition to the current models and will be certified as Porsche Classic Partners. These services will not only include the supply of some 52,000 original spare parts, complete and partial overhauls but also repair and maintenance work and the sale of classic cars. ■

STUTTGART. Dec 4, 2015/ Porsche PR. The first 100% electrically powered Porsche is on its way. The board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG today gave the green light for the Mission E project. In the words of the Chairman of the Executive Board, Porsche is thus “beginning a new chapter in the history of the sports car.” The vehicle is due to be launched at the end of the decade. The technological trailblazer combines outstanding driving performance with trendsetting day-to-day practicality. The 4-door car with 4 individual seats has a system power output of over 600 hp (440 kW). The vehicle will thus achieve both acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds and a range of more than 500 km. Charged via an 800-volt charger unit specially developed for the car, which is twice as powerful as today’s quick-charge systems, the lithium-ion batteries integrated within the vehicle floor have enough power again for 80 percent of the range after just 15 minutes. The vehicle can optionally be ‘refuelled’ wirelessly by induction via a coil set into the garage floor. ■
