That sure was an interesting entertainmerit session last meeting. When you combine interesting geography, good photography and Dr. Seman’s fantastic sense of humor, it’s an unbeatable combination. I’m on a crusade. The crusade is to get PCA-LA people to the Parade. I doubt if there is a more picturesque place than Monterey-Carmel-Big Sur. W~at a @reat location: I understand that about 400 cars have registered to date so this may very well be the largest Parade yet. Let’s get ~ minimum of at least 75 cars to Monterey - What do you say?

COVER The cover this month was photographed by Duane Alan and shows some of the 28 cars which participated in the Death Valley tour, stopped along "Artist’s Loop Road2

comment Don’t be scared. Come in. If you’ve just opened Porscherama for the first time in years, welcome. Not that we have a "slick" magazine - the cost and labor are still beyond our means. What I hope we do have is a newsletter that

will genera,te interest in the club,

people and activities. This club serves no other purpose than the accumulated purposes of its members. It is a "people" club. We don’t make money (stay with me), we make worthwhile personal experiences. Before I brashly asked for this job I weakly confess I really didn’t know many members (i.e., Paul who?). Typing into the wee hours I’m struck that, not only do I know many more porsche people, but I’ve made many more great friends. Not that I’m maudlin (excuse me Fraudie), just that when you and I get off our butts and away from the tube/job/fabricated excuse we make a rather interesting and enjoyable assemblage. So to all you out there in Porscherama land (even you new ones) keep on truckin. To you who haven’t been away from a client or patient long enough to read this, keep on scoopin. Money people, l’m told, are the next best thing to Porsche people. Goodnight Fraudie. Sleep well Willow.

march of events ~

ing will begin ~t noon. This event is open to non-PCA members and the entry fee will be $I0.00 per car, which includes admission to Santa Anita for one Porsche and two people. The first race (horses only) will begin at 12:30 p.m., and the $60,000 San Filipe Handicap should get your adrenalin going if the cars don’t. (Again, John Thomas, of Bozzani, and Alan Belch,of Santa Anita, have done a wonderful job promoting this event, and I’m sure a "thank you" from PCA members would be appreciated.) So . . . get out the polishing cloth, the concours was, and the "make rubber black" and get your car together. And don’t be late~ Last year, we had to turn away some very disappointed Porsche fanatics.

PCA-POC CHALLENGE CUP RALLY Sunday/9:00 a.m. Baring a torrential downfall, the first car will leave Gabriel and Olson P/A, 15531 Venture Blvd., Encino at 9:01 a.m. The rally will last approximately 8-1/2 hours and cover 300 miles, ending close to the San Fernando Valley, at an informal restaurant. Entry fee is $4.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members/Porsches. Ye gods, with two (I got three) flyere flying, let’s not end up crying . . . As old H.H. used to say, "Be there."

Thursday/8 : 00 p.m. The Original Bar-B-Q, 8th and Vermont, Los Angeles is allowing us to order off the menu and without reservations, yet: Gene Parrill will be there with his impressive 150 car collection of Porsche models, and will have some for sale as wel! as to give away. So come on out and scarf up (scarf up?) on the good food and company, o ~ ~_ ~I ~ ~ ~ ~......~,~.~ ~b~’~

~I VALVOLINE TECH MEETING ~i Wednesday/8:00 p.m. John Larson talked Boggs and McBurney into letting us use their shop’s conference room, at 11650 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Los Angeles, for a "highly" technical slide presentation by Valvoline. Viscosity, detergents, dispersents, foaming, molecular structure, thermal wizzbang effect (yea?)and other multi-syllable words will fill your mind. Impress your friends - become knowledgable; impress your mechanic - see him less often.

SOLVANG BY HOOK, CROOK AND BROOK

Greetings fellow Porsche Pushers: I ’d like to comment a~out the general meetingsfor a few lines. First of all, I’m pleased with the attendance at the meetings so far. We are averaging about twenty more members per meeting than last year. However, don’t let this go to your head. A club our size should be averaging a much larger attendance than we usually do. So, let’s get it together and really live up to the term "Porsche Pushers".

What s~arted out as the keenly contested PCA-POC Challenge Cup Rally ended up as the Damn the Rain, Let’s be Friends, Half Speed Ahead Tour. Things were going swimmingly when some thirty cars arrived at Gabriel and Olson PorscheAudi on Sunday, February llth. After considerable murmuring about the pros and cons of having the evnet, Ron R~mage contacted the Highway Patrol who informed him that two roads planned for travel were impassable. The sky in the north grew darker but no thunder cracked as Ron announced that the event would be rescheduled for March 4th. with the pressure off, groups of cars began to form and it became clear that many would make the best of the worst. It turned out beautifually. Despite rocks on the roads, the tour up was quick and, once in Solvang, the weather improved, The group I was with looked and ogled at wines and imported ware and stopped at every other restaurant, bakery, confectionary and ice cream shop to eat. Late in the afternoon, we began to straggle home. The drive back was fast, funky and friendly as we took all the off-beat Porsche roads behind Santa Barbara and Ojai. You know, I still think there was a flashing red light behind us somewhere in the foothills, I guess he probably told his buddy he was just testing his equipment. I would have. Ed.

Tore Johnson P.m. In case you didn’t make it to the last meeting, we are now selling Paul Oxman’s very exclusive Porsche posters and prints. If you have seen any of Paul’s work you know how good it is (very professional is the only way I can describe it). We have, in addition to the regular posters, a special type of print. Paul takes a poster and transposes it onto oil canvas and then frames it. It will satisfy the most demanding Purist. So come to the next general meeting, and pick one out to cover that bare wall.

PLAY PORSCHOP TECH MEETING What a month. The brake specialist at Ogner P/A had an emergency in his family and we didn’t know until 4:00 p.m. the afternoon of the meeting. Most of us treked out to the Valley unaware of the problem, only to meet John Larson out on the curb motioning meekly that he had some bad news. As it turned out, Vern Covert of Proschop c~me to the rescue. After traveling over to his place, he and John gave us an interesting discussion and demonstration of brakes that lasted long into the night. Ogner P/A was most apologetic (which they really didn’t have to be- those things happen) and has offered to do something reeeeely BIG in the future. Great: In the meantime, our thanks to Vern and his wife, Ada.

february minutes The Board met at John Kepler’s home on January 31, 1973 and agreed to the following: The Board will meet the first Thursday of each month; we will spend $45.00 to obtain a bulk mailing permit; and name badges will be the sine ~ua non at membership meetings. In general discussion, it was pointed out that "Up fixin’ der Porsche" (vol. 3) was ready for printing and that the club will derive revenue from its sale. Suggestions on how we might spend the "loot" included buying a PCA banner and/or timing equipment, paying for an event, and iocating and renting storage space for club equipment. (The Board is open to suggestions - Ed.) The need for a more definitive participation point system was brought up when Ralph was reminded that he must keep track of such things, On general membership meetings, the Board explored the possibility of selling "goodies", offering door prizes, etc. We seemed to agree that, while such things can add atmosphere, the most important thing was to invite new members and make them feel welcome. As to suggestions for coming events, it was suggested that we invite a representative, from one of the sponsoring regions, down to give us a pitch on the Parade. Also, we should get to work on the Christmas party and find a non-conflicting date for Willow. Planning for the Briggs-Cunningham tour was proceeding smoothly. Future tech sessions - we will attempt to have one on the new fuel injection at VW-Pacific and one at an agency where members can work on their own cars ~ith help, of course), Paul asked the bashful and lazy for all kinds of early contributions for Porscherama. Everyone can help get advertizers, support same and identify PCA when he does. The meeting adjourned some hours later with pie and fattening things prepared by our evenings’ hostess, Joscelyn.

The General Membership meeting was held February 8th, 1973 at the Santa Monica Boulevard Elementary School (got to find a shorter name - Ed) with 59 members and 5 guests attending. The business end of the meeting was much a continuation of the last Board meeting, with some additions. Paul Edwards described the new "book" format for Por~cherama (god willing) and asked for 8" by i0" glossy photographs for the cover. Paul, also, distributed a schedule which contained advertizing rates and procedures. John Larson’s "Show and Tell" this month was a rod taken from a friend’s 912...seems it had been loaned to yet another friend who thought the green light on the dash meant "GO." Nuf sed. John Kepler remarked that, "There is no reason why PCA shouldn’t have an event sponsored by a female." Well gals??? Besides the usual goodies table, Tore displayed, and discussed, the handsome Porsche posters he had brought with him. Intermission was eventful, with a huge cake for Paul Beam’s birthday complementing delicious brownies, punch, etc. Many thanks to the evening’s refreshment committee - the Lerg’s, George Juarez and Suzanne, and Geri Boothe. Satiated, we returned to our seats to hear a~out Harold Seman’s nine week tour of the Balkans. With his wife and a new 911T, which he picked up in Stuttgart, he traced,in slides and words, a route through Eastern Europe not often seen by traveling Americans . . . beautiful pictures . . . scenery . . . people . . . friends . . . roads .,. . more roads . . . cars . . . other modes of travel and . . . (watch out: the scourge of the Balkans and Ceasar’s Revenge rol~ ed into one ball). . . the Italian driver. Thank you Harold, for an entertaining and educational evening. Edith Savage Secretary

Anyway, I’ve been huddled out here at checkpoint 2 just drippin wet and I haven’t seen one o’ya. You rascals think you’re so fast old Fraudie can’t see ya, I know. But I gotcha comin and goin .... sent away to the factory for a new pair of five speed windshield wippers for my goggles, so, if ma eyes can stand the speed, I’ll see ya. Meanwhile, I’m runnin outa hot water for my oatmeal and I only gotta couple of swallows of Santa Fe left. So please, hurry up and find me (why don’t one o’ya drive one a them fandangled camper things up here so I can cuddle up to a real radiator to keep warm), Flash: Flash: Plash: oops: spilled my oatmeal all over ma drivin booties; that’ll teach me ta try to cool that stuff off.., Is it true POC stands for Predictably Owful climate? Is it true Paul Edwards loves to slip by Stop signs? Is it true John Larson knows where all the LA police hang out? Is it true that John Kepler told his wife to take it easy; he would have the next baby? Is it true that Don Colwell Jr. knows the best place in Solvang to eat? Is it true that Duane Alan said, "i can’t handle it (his Porsche) over 70 mph"? Is it true that Tore Johnson knows where to get old fashion ice cream with sprinkles on it in Solvang? Is it true that Ogner P/A fixes brakes? Whoops. That was below the belt. And speakin of belts, I’m slippin out of this Recaro and I’m completely out of Santa Fe. But I’ll be here waitin-ya little speedsters. Just gotta change blades on ma goggles and catch ma breath ..... Fraudie

Q

Being newly associated with PCA, I’ve been rather dissappointed that there haven’t been more women participating at events and meetings. The ones I’ve met have been gracious and a lot of fun, but where are the rest of you??? The same people are always coming out and getting the goodies. Since you probably don’t know what you’re missing, maybe I can tell you. I guess I’m like most women, I thought, "well it’s his car so he’s the one that should shine"; or "who wants to race around a track with those maniacs" or "I just don’t want to look bad". Was I wrong: I think I had to be pushed into the car at Willow, it’s scary when you’ve never done it, but there was a touch of excitement too. I felt like everyone was looking at me (I had all kinds of illusions) but I was wrong again. After stomping on the brakes at turn one and pushing the gas to the floor to get around turn two there is no turning back and its great... a real live "turn on" if you like to drive at all. I had some good coaching (cheap) which is a necessity for every novice, but ~ was the one driving. I still get goose bumps (better known as "Willowitis") thinking a]~out it - a really terrific experience. You should never feel that you have to compete in these events, just go out and participate because you want to do it; you want to experience something new. Even the tech meetings are fun because they’re done by people who care about Porsches and know what they’re talking about. Lord knows we women need to know more about these cars than just getting in and turning the key. Besides, you see new faces and make new friends (and I think after hearing Vern and John of Porschop explain it, even I could change disc brakes). Its your club too, so use it: Lynda Webber ,

SEALING AIR CLEANERS FOR WASHING

DAYTONA - TWICE AROUND THE CLOCK

For those owners with wire mesh air cleaners, who frequently hose down their engine compartment, here is a simple fix that will prevent water from entering the cleaners - prepare rubber sleeves cut from an inner tube that just fit over the screens. On models which vent the crankcase into the air cleaner, disconnect the hose at the oil filler neck and thread it through the sleeve, loosely reconnecting the hose to seal off all openings, Jim Baughman

A Porsche Carrera driven by Pete Gregg and Hurley Laywood raced to a first place overall win almost i00 miles ahead of their second place Milt Minter/Francois Migault Ferrari Daytona (better stick to Porsches, Milt). Also, entered was another Carrera driven by Mark Donohue and George Follmer. Within the first 15 laps, the Porsches were in the top i0. The Donohue/Follmer Carrera dropped out at 5:14 a.m. with a melted piston (which is technical for thermal wizz-bang effect). So, in the 2.7 Carrera’s first outing, as a production model, it proved itself against such names as Lola, Matra, Ferrari and even a Porsche 908. Impressive. Del Jackson

The Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum in Costa Mesa will open its doors to us ~n Sunday, April 29th at i0:00 a.m. The Cuningham Collection consists of cars which contributed many "firsts" to the automotive world - both technically and aesthetically. Included are cars raced by Briggs S. Cunningham at Le Mans during the ’50s and ’60s. The museum curator and director, John Briggs (a well known racing car designer and builder in his own right) will be our personal guide. You’ll be able to view the cars from "all angles" - including interiors and engines. All cars are in running order, and several will be "exercised" that day for us. In addition, there will be a Mini Le Mans model car endurance race in the afternoon in the parking lot - which is supposed to generate all the drama of the real thing, including a torrential flood washing accross the track. So . . . get your comfortable shoes, start your engines, and come on out! Incidentally, this will be just as much fun for the ladies, so be sure to include your wife or girlfriend. And why not ask her to pack a "picnic
