PCA-LA At A Glance PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Pots he Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.
Subscriptions PORSCHERAMA is available to nonmembers of PCA-D’, at the rate of $’12 per year. Send requests to ~9~ ~ Newell Road, Malibu 90265, along with your check, payable to PCA-LA.
Dated material must be received by the editorial board no later than the ~st of each month to insure publication. Other contributions will be published on a space available basis. Statements appearing in PORSCHERAMA are those of the author and do not constitute an opinion of PCA-LA, its board of directors, the PORSCHERAMA editorial board, or its staff. Now this is more like it. I think we have finally managed to get back on schedule. Hope that the lateness of last month’s paper didn’t inconvenience anyone. The month of October is special because this is when you get the chance to nominate new board carefully, you will remember that this is the year we will vote for VP, Treasurer, and Tech Chmn.

membership meeting this month, on Wednesday, October 13, will be the time and place for nominations from the floor. we are really excited about all of our new advertisers. We remember the years when we had fo struggle along wifh only one or fwo supporters. Now we actually get requests from advertisers, We arepoRSCHERAMAgrateful for your support and hope that proves a good investment. We are also delighted by the number of out-ofstate people who have requested subscriptions to PORSCHERAMA. Our fame must be spreading far and wide. To all those of you who are not regular members of PCA-LA, we hope you enjoy reading about the goings on. And, finally, one note of real urgency. Next year, August 20-22, the Monterey Antique Auto Races and Pebble Beach Concours will feature PORSCHE. We have waited a long time for this to happen, and every self-respecting Porsche owner will went to be in Carmel for that weekend. So, your editors want to encourage you to make reservations NOW. We’re not kidding. Some of the hotels in Carmel are already booked. When you think about the number of Porsches in California, you can understand why. In the spring of next year, we’ll start planning a caravan for the drive up. But for now, make those reservations. That’s all for this month. ConnieLark’nAnn

Of course, there is an answer to all this; use better material to manufacture valve guides. E.P.A.--are you listening when you should be? Note: Porsche has been using improved high mileage valve guides since 1977 in its 91 1 automobiles.
A MATTER OF CONJECTURE It has recently occured to me, during my 60 mile daily commute, that the Federal government may have set exhaust pollutant levels too low prior to collection of sufficient data. Because of lean burning engines, combustion chamber temperatures have risen considerably, causing valve guides, that never used to wear out prematurely, to deteriorate rapidly. Sinusitis makes it extremely uncomfortable for me to be in an air conditioned space, SO I make do with the windows down, the sunroof open, or the roof off in my 914/6. This situation permits me to identify smells, from recycled water saturating a field, to plankton, to an Oldsmobile diesel. All of the above mentioned scents are, to some degree, objectionable to the human olfactory organ. But none of these odors is as detestable as an auto up ahead, in traffic, that is both decelerating and has bad valve guides. Worn out valve guides are certainly not a new thing, but usually when an auto had guide problems, one wheel was in the wrecking yard and the other three were in an oil slick, so no one paid much attention. All of a sudden, there are cars on the road, in perfect condition, otherwise, with less than 30,000 miles on the odo, that need valve guide replacement. This is an expensive repair, requiring removal of cylinder heads, and complete refurbishment of them. John Doe, with his leased car, will hardly rush over to the neighborhood repair shop and drop a grand or two on a repair of this nature "just to correct a slightly high oil consumption problem". Oil

tolerance between the outside diameter of the
valve stem and the inside diameter of the valve guide becomes too large during guide wear. This allows oil to enter the combustion chamber during deceleration, some of this oil is then burned as part of the combustion process, reducing efficiency of the chamber and sending hydrocarbons and visible smoke out the tail pipe. This does not affect performance, unfortunately, therefore repairs will not be done as soon as they should be. All of this adds up to pollution. Pollution from cars that aren’t supposed to spew any. Pollution from cars that have black boxes controlling air/fuel mixture, cars that have fuel injection systems that are unbelieveably precise in delivering the exact proportions required by the engine in all situations. Only problem with exact metering is the fact that the air/fuel mixture is a lean one, and a lean mixture causes high cylinder head and combustion chamber temperatures, and premature valve guide failure. What a mess! I’ve seen properly tuned 75,000 mile 356C’s run cleaner than 25,000 mile 1975 91 IS’s.

October is upon us--the fall season [or Charley Brown’s famous "drop" season] and cooler weather prevails [who am I kidding?]. The PCA calendar, however, isn’t showing any signs of cooling off! We’ll be starting the month with our Board of Directors meeting at John Fel’s home on Wednesday the 7th, It’s so nice to have John’s hospitality that his home is becoming the regular place. Come over and share with the Board your ideas on how to make PCA-LA the most meaningful and enjoyable adjunct to Porsche ownership, Call JDF for instructions to his place [space?]. The weekend of October ~0 and ~ ’1 will see PCA at Riverside International Raceway once again, This will be the last event of the ’198~ Zone 8 Time Trial calendar, the last chance to lock up that elusive Zone 8 Class Trophy or the last chance of the year to get out and brave the wilds of RIR. It’s become a near-tradition for Zone 8 that PCA-LA put on the Riverside event. This year Judd Boykin and Jon Winthrop will chair the event. We’ll be sharing costs with POC in the format of a dualClub [duel-club?] event so there will be lots of cars out for this weekend. We’ll be running the Westworld Course [see map elsewhere in this issue]. All of the expected amenities will be provided. There will be a club-sponsored [i.e. free] beerbust after the closure of the track on Saturday. Nick Friesen will be Chief Driving Instructor for PCA-ers who either need brush-up or first time instruction. There will be loaner helmets, plenty of track time and plenty of instructors - all of these features are aimed at getting as many new drivers to come out as possible. Call me [7~4183’1-3799 or Judd [2’131788-4’182 or Jon [2 ~ 31325-3433 for further info. Don’t miss this event!
On the same weekend PCA-San Diego will be holding their Zone 8 Concours. I haven’t seen their flyer yet--I hope you spit-shine buffs will find the appropriate flyer/announcement elsewhere in this issue of PORSCHERAMA. Tuesday, October ~3, will be our regular membership meeting at the SCC Yacht Club. Our guest speaker will be Pete Smith. Pete has been a Porsche-pusher for many years [even decades!] and he is currently the boss at the Bob Smith Porsche-Audi in Hollywood. Pete’s got a 908 that can bring tears of joy and envy to racefans and concours devotees alike. He’ll tell us about his winning efforts at the ~98~ ~2 Hours of Sebring race as well as answer [almost all] of our questions regarding the marketing of new Porsches. Don’t miss this one! Riverside Region will put on a Zone 8 Rally on October ~ 7. Please see elsewhere in this issue for their flyer. The last weekend will be our first attempt at putting on a Salomn/Swap Meet to benefit Pet Orphans. See flyer for further details.

LEGISLATIVE LIAISON BULLETIN NO. 81-2 The purpose of the periodic Legislative Liaison Bulletins is to inform the membership of the Club concerning pending regulatory action in Washington that may not be in the best interests of the Porsche owner. The topic of this Bulletin is Revised Clean Air Standards and their impact on Porsches. On August 4, 1981, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Representatives Bob Traxler [D-MI] and Bud Hillis [R-IN] entitled "Mobile Source Clean Air Act Amendments of 1981". This bill, HR 4400, would provide for a relaxation of automobile emissions standards to essentially 1980 levels of 7.0 gpm of CO and 2.0 gpm of NOx. PCA members are urged to write their Congressmen and offer support for this bill. Members should also urge their Congressmen to introduce or support an amendment to the bill which would raise the level of NO emissions to 1.5 gpm [grams per mile] from the present 0.39 gpm. The benefits to be derived from passage of HR 4400 with an amendment as noted are as follows:
Slightly relaxed emissions standards will allow substantially greater fuel economy with current engine technology, as well as improved performance.
The use of leaded gasoline allows approximately 9% greater utilization of crude oil in the production of gasoline. In other words, the lead additive allows 9% more gasoline to be produced from a barrel of oil. This has the effect of reducing our crude oil consumption by 9%, if all cars use leaded gasoline. In order to write your Congressman, use the following address:
The Honorable John Doe House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Mr. Doe: It is important that the Regions disseminate this information to your members as soon as possible. By the time you read this, Congress will have returned from their summer recess. They plan to be in session through the end of October and possibly into early November. This bill is important to us for the reasons stated, and we would like to offer our support in a responsive manner. Yours truly, Robert C. Rassa Legislative Liaison Chairman
The proposed new standards, with amendment, can be met by most automobile manufacturers without the use of catalytic converters. This in turn will reduce vehicle cost and weight, tt will also allow the use of leaded gasoline, which provides additional potential for increased mileage and performance.

THE NUMBERS GAME- HOW TO PUMP UP THE ODDS -- by "CrowBeak" Krobeak, M.E.
There’s some new math going around. Oh, no, not the kind that gave fits to kids and helpful parents alike a dozen or so years ago, but perhaps equally confusing to the uninitiated. Recognize this little equation ?: 1/2(89)+1/2(92)=98. If you did, chances are you’ve been eyeballing the gasoline pumps trying to beat the numbers game in getting the best fuel you can for your preUNLEADED!FUEL ONLY Porsche - or other car designed to run on fossil fuels with anti-knock additives. And as with most a!l of us, finding the source has dried up. So what do you use for maximum performance under the existing supply - and what do those
But times change and with them, systems. It was decreed from Washington - the seat of all knowledge and the fount of beneficial blessings - that a new system using higher engine rpm, more spark advance and incorporating elevated engine temperatures would be used with the new breed of emissions-controled cars. This would establish a new Motor Octane Number, MON. (Now personally I have always preferred the use of the term "Engine" over "Motor" - which would have made it EON - but that’s another story for another issue.) They have this system,

more severe problems such as holed pistons and general engine distress. A lot of pump Premium fuels ran about 98 octane, with some companies pushing Super Premiums at 100+ - fairly simple to understand, and to seek out the best fuels. beating the odds at the pump. You play it this way:
around 89 and 92, it comes out close to the old 98 of leaded "Premium." The proportions between the two are up for grabs, ranging from 25% to 75% of the leaded gasoline. This varies from one type, or brand of gasoline to another. It’s all in the amount of tetraethyl lead contained in the fuel. Just a few drops per gallon of this highly toxic material makes the difference, changing "Regular" to "Premium," but having certain undesirable side effects. The "’Eppies" in Washington (EPA) didn’t like these.

SUMMER IN THE WILLOWS
Region competitors, Chuck Harbaugh and Rob Vogel ran "E" stock; Virginia Battelle and Len Cushman shared Len’s 944S, and Peter Leffe all ran well in their classes. Jan Winthrop’s airconditioned motorhome was a comfort to all who found him. Too bad, Jan and Jose couldn’t have their "new" 356 out to play in. Judd Boykin had a busy weekend, and along with Connie, gave the Porschop racer a workout. Well, now we look forward to the Peter Gregg Memorial Challenge Cup, four club event coming up in September at Riverside, although it has no Zone 8 points it should be fun to run with the Ferrari’s and Pantera’s. The next Zone 8 event in October may have the making or breakings for some of the overall championships, and I am sure we are all looking forward to one of my favorite courses, and the LA Region’s GRAND FINALE to the Zone 8 ~98~ series.
The Orange Coast Region in conjunction with POC put on a great time trial at Willow Springs Raceway June 27 and 28. The track seemed a little slower than before, but everyone had a great time with a large enthusiastic LA Region turnout, With over ~00 cars entered, practice sessions were at times a little hectic, and many of us had fun practicing a little "dicing" here and there. And the lap times seemed to be dropping rapidly. The weather was cooperative, and, as usual, the Orange Coast Region put on a great event, Of the class winners, Pete Zimmerman took the PCA fastest time of the day [the fastest was turned in by a POC 906], not bad, Pete! I surprised myself with second fastest for PCA, and both of us took our respective classes. Bob Trousdale’s car was busy with three drivers making timed runs, and Bob took "F stock". Mac McKee and Len Scott shared tires all weekend, proving Goodyear’s worth and Mac went on to take "DP" honors, Connie Fern took the Porschop racer to a "XL" victory; Coralee Ellison took "ESL’; Emily Bloom took "HSL"; Rick Mortimer beat John Williamson by 3/~00’s of a second for "E" stock. Of the other LA

THE WEEKEND AT THE ANTIQUE CAR RACES AT
On Friday morning, bright and early, we left for the raoes, W~ stopped for Ior~akfast in $olvang plus a few bathroom stops. About 2 p.m., we arrived in Monterey. Our motel room was really great because it was walking distance to all the shops in Carmel. We had dinner at the Hog’s Breathe with some members of Santa Barbara’s P.C.A.--great food, drinks, and tee shirts, The next morning bright and early, we left for the races. We arrived during the initial practice laps. We walked through the pits admiring all the race cars. It was surprising to see antique car races as competitive as any other type of car racing today. Vasek Polack was there with his vans, motorhomes, parts and mechanics to go along with his race cars. The racing went beautifully except for an endo by a GT40. That evening, we went to Cannery Row and had dinner at Nell DeVaughn’s which ended a great day at the races. On Sunday morning, we had a leisurely brunch at Mission Ranch. Then we decided to return to LA via Highway ~0~. The ride was quite peaceful. There were stretches of the road where the speedometer reached 85 miles per hour. Around 4:30, we decided to go to Guadalupe at the world famous Far West Tavern. We had a pleasant meal and then continued on our journey to LA. Everything seemed quite peaceful until we were about ~0 miles south of Santa Maria on Highway ~0~. The 9~4 staffed to backfire. Even though it was backfiring, the car was moving at full speed. Then all of a sudden, the 9’14 stopped. The engine would not turn over. At first, we thought it was a fuse, but we were not so lucky, At this point, it started to get dark. Several Porsches drove by, but just ignored us. Even Vasek Polack’s team with their shop van drove by. The highway patrol was nowhere in sight--just when you need them they are not around. Then a "4 door 924" stopped to help--Judy and Will Hoag, president of Santa Barbara’s P,C.A. The 9"14 was towed to a Porsche shop in Santa Maria--called The Autohouse on 3388 Orcuft Road, Santa Maria. To our surprise, the owner of the shop is a member of P.C.A. In the end, everything worked out. So, if you see a Porsche stuck on the side of the
