PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

Subscriptions PORSCHERAMA is available to nonmembers of PCA-LA at the rate of $12 per year. Send requests to 1911 Newell Road, Malibu 90265, along with your check, payable to PCA-LA.

The picture cover this month features the first Tech session of the ’82 season -- and the first Ladies Tech. Not restricted to women of course, but designed by Doug Anderson as a basic session to acquaint you with some essential information. It was his hope I’m sure to get a few more women involved in the Tech sessions. And he succeeded -- we saw some new faces -male and female. It was an entertaining evening. Doug opened the session and was both informative and funny. He was then assisted by Ken Ito, Jose Ochoa and Jan Bieren. A rousing vote of thanks of all. Photo credits to Lark. Socializing and refreshments capped the evenino. John Williamson helped make our life easier this month by supplying the story on the REVENGE II and the pictures of the White Glove Concour at South Coast Plaza. Thanks John. Congratulations are in order for Coralee Ellison --Wash and Shine winner at the White Glove Concour. While we’re passing out pats on the back, how about seeing the results so quickly. Three events since the last issue of the newsletter and the results are published in this issue. Keep up the good work event chairman and Ron Hughes.

September 1954..."The ’Dream car of twenty million people’ may want a new Cadillac, but half a million Volkswagon owners dream of someday owning a Porsche! When the Porsche was first showing in the United States in 1950, its 40 small bhp and $4,O0O price tag fell fairly flat in spite of many good qualities. The advent of two 1488cc models of 55 and 70 bhp, respectively, changed all of that in a hurry." March 1965... "The body of the 911 is completely new, with more glass, crisper lines and functional styling. At the same time, it remains unmistakably Porsche. When this car was first showing at Frankfurt in 1963, it was christened Type 901 because it happened to be the design identified by this number. Since then, because Peugeot has some sort of registered priority on type designations with 3 figures and a zero in the middle, the 901 became the 911 ." UPDATE

out in A/S; a "new" member, Ken Becker, will be running his 924 in both clubs this year; Salvatori Lipori and Ivan Van Dyke shared the D/S 914; F/S brought out Dave and Mark Stephens-nice to see Dave out racing again; chasing (or being chased) by them was Bob Trousdale; in G/P another "new" PCA runner was Bob Gager; H/S had Wyatt Isabel and Richard Wakeman; H/P/L was dominated by Sandra Bartley; H/P has a new change as Rick Jackson moved up from F/P with new body work and a new engine--sharing Rick’s car was Len Cushman; it was nice to see JonWinthrop out again and running in the very popular X class; and in the "rocket ship" Z class was Bob Douglass and Tom Linton.

The 1982 Zone 8 Time Trial series was "kicked-off" at Riverside Raceway on February 6th & 7th, but not with a bang. It was more of a "drip" and just as time runs were getting under way on Sunday afternoon, it rained. Not that much, but just enough to make the track wet and unsafe. All the entrants were given one point toward the year-end total, and from the humber of competitors, this looks like its going to be one of PCA’s best years. There were some new faces, as well as most of the "die-hard" runners, with class changes for some, and completely new racers for others. Coralee Ellison was sharing the driving chores with Dave Givens; Connie Fern and Judd Boykin started to break in their motor; Pete Zimmermann brought out a completely new 914-6 for X or Z; Doug Dana was

This was a joint event with POC, and from the total number of entrants from both clubs, it’s a good idea to keep running together to insure a full season. The next event will be held at Willow Springs on March 27 and 28. The completed list of "experienced" drivers was reviewed, and "Driver Education Certificates" will be~given out there. If you qualify for the Certificate after the Willow Springs Event, please see me and I will send one out to you. See you at Willow

The year 1982 for PCA-LA is really looking good. The activities we have experienced, and yet to experience, the new Board, the planning for the ’84 Parade, are truly exciting. Two super events are coming up that no true Porsche Person should miss--the Reno Parade, June 20-26th, and the Vintage Car Races at Laguna Seca, August 2022nd. We’ll be writing more about both of these events as time draws near, but if you are at all interested in the Vintage Car event, it is a must to try and beg, borrow or steal an accommodation in the Monterey/Carmel area as it is our understanding that the place is sold out for that weekend, To wet your appetite for going, this year has been declared the "year of the Porsche" and every model Porsche you’ve ever dreamed about will be on hand. We are told that the Factory (Porsche, not Rothman) is packing up all their museum cars and bringing them over plus the famous Mathe car (precursor of the 356) which ran the Rome-Berlin race in 1939. Herr Otto Mathe at age 86 has been invited as an honored guest to show and drive this unique auto. Among other outstanding examples of Porsche expected ’will be the Auto Union racer of 1930’s fame, the first front wheel drive Audi, Porsche number one and the 936 that won LeMans last year. Porsche+ Audi and Volkswagen of America are participating and will have supporting activities that will stagger the imagination including major product announcements (911SC Convertible?). If everything comes to pass, this will be the largest assemblage of historic Porsches and the biggest vintage racing event ever held. If you would like more information on either the Parade or the Vintage Car Races, please give me a call.

As you can tell from our Calendar, every other month we have a Get Acquainted/ Orientation Meeting. The February meeting brought out about 40 of us for an interesting meeting of what PCA-LA is all about. Presentations were made on Club organization, Rallying, Time Trialing and Concours. If you have not attended one of these meetings, do so because you’ll see what the Club is doing and, for sure, find an area of interest. Our General Membership Meeting for May is the world famous Dustin Janes Parking Lot BBQ. Dustin has promised that, and I don’t see how it would be possible, this year’s BBQ and entertainment will top all previous events. Traditionally, this event brings together more Club members than anything else we do. It’s not only a time for fun, but a chance to meet other Club members and get ready for summer time. You won’t want to miss this one!

12 May continues the hectic pace of the PCA calendar. By the time you read this column (if ever), the first events will have already been held. The first was to be something new for PCA-LA--a rallye/tour to the area outside of Santa Barbara. Planned by first time eventmaster Judy Wolfe, this weekend tour included a BBQ dinner and evening theater performance Saturday night in addition to the group rally style runs of Saturday and the laid back social day on Sunday. Also on the 1st and 2nd on May was the Zone 8 Concours of Southern Arizona Region. PCA-LA wil continue the Zone 8 Concours series on Sunday, May 16. We’ll be having our big show at the same park as last year in Temescal Canyon. See elsewhere for the formal announcement of this event. Last year’s event turned out to be a great show. The grassy, rolling hills gave a perfect setting to the dozens of beautiful Porsches that were shown. And there were dozens more just parked on the boulevard as spectators. Come out early to get good parking (before the beach crowd) on the street, bring a nice picnic (lots of beer if it’s hot like last year) and your cameras. You’ll love it!

Thursday, May 20 will be our now-famous Parking Lot BBQ. It’ll be back at the South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club, and the Stalwart Dustin Janes will be the guest of Honor (read Head Cook). You Ive already gotten the flyer on this event, WeI 11 have Dusty’ s fantastic mari nated flank steak, salad trimmings, and of course generous amounts of I iquid refreshments. This affair is becoming the social highl ight of the summer--don’t mi ss it. Come on out and renew some old acquaintances and meet some new PCAers! La s tl y i n May wi I 1 be a Zone 8 Ti me Tri al. Hel d on the 22 and 23, thi s wi 11 be an airport course type of event. The track itself is a police pursuit training course located at Shafter Airport outside of Bakersfield (see ad elsewhere). The types of turns, the lack of elevation changes and the luxary of wide runoff margins make this type of high speed drivers training quite different from that held at a

"regular" racetrack like Willow or Riverside. Jointly sponsored by Golden Empire Region and Orange Coast Region, this event p. omises to be an excellent way for a PCAer to get a first taste of time trialing. I can recall that in 1972 and 1973 when I was just getting a feel for time trialing (and Willow still scared me silly),a similar event at the 0xnard Airport gave me a chance to really put my car and myself closer to our limits (the honorable John Williamson instructing) without the worries of the boulders at Willow or the Armcos at Riverside. I even got a cherished photo of my 911 with a wheel airborne (too much antisway bar for that ride height). Anyway, take my recommendation to get out to this time trial and give it a go. See you there! ~~L~

I. Parade Competition Rules: The Reps met with Charles Davis of the Maverick Region and Chariman of the Parade Competition Rules Committee. Charley and the other members of the Committee have

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AND NATIONAL BOARD MEETING

completely re-written the Competition Rules for the 1982 Parade in Reno and I miqht add have done a beautiful job. The rules are now very easy to read and understand and have a complete table of contents. An Errata sheet will be issued to correct a few small errors in the rules. Of interest to many going to the Parade is the fact that Division V in the Concour will be split into two separate Divisions, Division V-A (914-4 & 914-6) and Division V-B (924, 944 & 928). I have a copy of the 1982 Parade Competiton Rules if any of you have a question on them. They should be sent to Parade registrants sometime in March Norm Martin (Rocky Mountain Region) 2. requested a letter from each Zone Rep with information on speed events in the individual zones. This information will be used in an article Norm is working on with AUTOWEEK. Some of the information that Norm is looking for is as follows: Where, How, How many, How much participation, Safety, Driver Instruction and a copy of the rules. I will reply to Norm after discussing this with Judd Boykin. 3. The Reps were asked to pass on to their Regions that the use of the PCA Crest and/or the Porsche Emblem should be watched very carefully and should never be used to endorse a product or a service, ACTION ITEM: The Reps were asked 4. to collect one regional car badge from each region they represent for placement on a special wall in Harrahs Museum in Reno. This will be for a permanent display in the Museum, not just for the duration of the Parade. I need to send the badges to Terry Zaccone, the Zone 7 Rep by May 15,

I. Honorary membership was approved for approx. 15 individuals, including Dr. Porsche, Peter Schutz and Ruth Harte. 2. 1981 Parade in Ashville, NC.: Financially, the Parade was a success° National received proceeds of $5,000+ in addition to the $4,870° received from Ashville for the sale of items left over from the Portland Parade. The official results of the Parade will be sent out shortly° 3. It was agreed to continue the PCA ad in Road and Track Magazine and the funds were approved. 4. Approx. $28,000. was approved to re-print Up-Fixin Volumes l and 2 (will be combined) and Volume 3o 5. will

SATURDAY, lO:Ol A.M.

FIRST CAR OUT

The first Zone 8 Rally of the series was held February 27th. We call it "revenge" because it’s our turn as Rallymasters to get even with all the other Rallymasters that have trapped us. Bill and I used the same course as last year, left out one long leg and changed the instructions. Many of you rallyers bought some of the traps because you thought you were on the same rally as last year--HA HA-fooled you. How many people saw the 2nd "Wayside Honor"--GOTCHA. I hope everyone enjoyed the check points. I want to thank the !~orkers: Fred Hess, Dave Jones, Brent Morrow, Connie Ferguson, Connie Fern, Claire Legg, Doug Dana and Jenny Farrington. Sixteen of the cars on the first leg went through the off-course control. The results are as follows: RESULTS,

We had a very poor response to our proposed by-laws amendment last month. With the deadline being March 20th, I had received only 9 ballots! Out of those 9, 7 were a "YES" vote and the remaining 2 were "NO" votes° We thus will pass the amendment to PCA-LA By-Laws, article V, Section 4 which will now state that: "Dues are now set by PCA and include as amount returnable to PCA-LA. Fees and assessments of PCA-LA shall be established by two-thirds vote of the Board of Directors. Look for next month’s newsletter for the first quarter points, sorry they didn’t make this month’s newsletter, but I’m missing concours results and the Willow Springs results also. That’s all for this month. ~
