PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Frankly, I thou@ht by now some-

The Zone 8 President’s meeting was held on October 30th this year.

Items of

interest discussed were the competition rules for the Zone 8 Series. No changes were recommended for the rally rules, but there will be an additional class created for 1983. It will be designed for the beginning rallyist who is interested in learning the art, but not accumulating Zone points. Further details on this class will be available after the first of 1983. For Concours enthusiasts, the only change will be breaking the 356 classes down by open and closed cars. In the Time Trial series, there are numerous changes proposed. A list of these will be published in the January Newsletter. 1983 will see the advent of a Zone 8 Slalom Series. Several regions are interested in hosting events. These range from Golden Empire down through San Diego. These events will be mostly parking lot type events and are a good place to learn the basics of car handling. Since the Overall Award has been abolished from Parade competition, we are working on the design of one for our Zone 8 Series. Ron Hughes from Orange Coast is working out the details and they should be available during January.

one would have come forth to nut this effort on an orsanized/bimely course, but alas -- only a few comnlaints (no names), but no volunteers to to.ke charze. The current Editor began over 2]~ .... years a.<{o, because the Editor at that time had sto~oned ~]uttins out the ne~.~sletter (I think I know why[). ~fhere were three of us then ConnieLarknAnn, s~ to be joined by l[en. ~!~he three of us, shared the responsibilities and covered fo~ each other when necessary. ]<en p~ovided the ~lace and eQuimment and his ~esip]n talent. ]1arly this year Ann, because of other committments, left our numbers. We missed ~er overall inmut and i~elp at our paste-u~o sessions. She did continue to provide us }zith mailinz !abels until this month when the ionS awaited for chanze over to a new computer occurred. Alon#~ the way this ~vear .ne~:~ Wail<ins became our tynist - a most welcome addition. ~fhe ~ast three months it has been Peg.#y, i{en and Connie - Lark haying been lost to the mressures of full time employment. i1 seems to be gettin.z harder to ~u% i1 ~ii to.~<ether, that ~robably is due to the staleness of the current Editor. The Porscherama Editor is ~n m.~nnointed position. ALL HALLOW’S EVE SPECIAL EVENT Whoever said there would be no trick or treating this year was soooooooooo wrong~ l’m here to report there were tricks and treats aplenty on Sunday for our enthusiastic group of PCAers assembled in Tapia Park for a fun-filled rallye. Connie Fern had done it again... The crisp autumn day lent an air of promise to the end of summer, and armed with a set of questions and a map, we were off (thanks to our starter, Dusty Janes). Our rendezvous point was Sycamore Cove near the Ventura County line for "treats."

pb tweeks is:

My cherished 911T was driven masterfully by Paul Hacker, and although l’ve never been known to read a map, I was our selfappointed navigator. Our tricks were maneuvering Encinal and Decker Canyons, not an easy feat when afflicted with severe motion sickness. My first rallye, and in a field of six, we placed 5th. Oh well, there’s only one way to go now, up ........ Drivers, cars, and placement were as follows: Jack DiRosario/Mary Ellen Loughran 74 Carrera - Ist Cal Marks/Cyndee Freeman 914 - 2nd Duane and Nicki Alan ’83 944 - tied 3rd Bill and Peggy Watkins 72 911 - tied 3rd Dave Givens/Coralee Ellison 911 - 4th Elizabeth Catalano/Paul Hacker 911 - 5th Doing the cooking honors were John McManamy and Bob Fern. The pumpkin carver and co-event chairman: Ken Ballard. Until next time, ciao .....

Accordins to my own persaonal observations obtained from drivin~ numerous Porsches of all years and models, one of the most glaring errors in an otherwise fine car, is speedometer error, It seems to be consistant in Porsches with stock tires and ,~earing at about 10% and seems to be built in at the Factory. The C.H.P. that writes you a ticket for 75 HPH and you feel smug

because you knew you were doing, over 80

MPH,

feels

smuG

too,

he

knew how

fast you were ~oing. Another ~oint to consider is that when your odometer indicates you were getting 20 MPG it was really only 18 T.IPG. Your Porsche with i00,000 miles really has close to only 90,000.

Taking your car to a good speedometer shop is probably the easiest and most accurate way to have this problem corrected, If your Porsche is under warranty and you can validate the inaccuracy of your s~eedo (AAA test) then the Factory will cover the repair.

MEIIBERSHIP

ONTHLY MINUTES

Those of you who didn’t make it to our November "get acquainted" meeting really missed out. Forty new and used members showed up and enjoyed a home-cooked turkey dinner with all of the trimmings. We decided to have a small holiday present for all those hearty souls that braved the

rainy weather to join us at the Yacht Club. Of course, we had our (by now infamous) slide show and comedy hour. (Can’t someone come up with some better

slides of Porsche activities?) Please check your address label and let us know if there are any errors or

omissions. Early next year we will be sending out a questionnaire to complete the updating of our files; but until keep us informed of any changes in

then,

addresses, etc.

Hope

to see all of you at the Christmas party. Either way, have a Happy Holiday season and a super New Year.

7 SAN SYLMAR TOUR November 6, 1982 was a beautiful clear day as 47 members of PCA/LA and their family and friends waited for the tour of San Sylmar to begin,

You then climb up a winding staircase (called the "Stairway to the Stars" and after that climb I can see whyS). You enter the Music Room. Here you will find one of the world’s largest collections of automatic mechanical

San Sylmar sits out in the east end of the San Fernando Valley in the town of Sylmar. The "Tower of Beauty," as it is called, houses the private collection of "Functional Fine Art," belonging to Mr. & Mrs. J.B. Nethercutt. Mr. Nethercutt is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of

musical instruments. From the small cylinder music boxes to a 1926 Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ with 2500 pipes. This organ has not only been restored to its original beauty, but has also been connected to a master computer at San Sylmar and can record live concerts and play them back again, automatically, during tours.

Merle Norman Costmetcs. This museum is different than most museums in that every item in it is not only completely restored, but completely functional and used~ Your tour begins as you enter through the "Great Doors." Cast in solid bronze, these two doors tower over 10 feet high and weigh about 1500 pounds~ You enter the hallway where you make a right into the "Grand Salon Showroom." Here you will get a chance to see some very beautifully restored cars. There are nearly 100 antique automobiles located on the premises; however, only about a dozen are on display in the showroom. All the cars are in working condition and driven periodically to keep them functioning properly. Among the cars on view--Valentino’s 1923 Voisin, "Fatty" Arbuckles 1923 McFarlan, and a 1939 Rolls Royce chassis which was hidden in Berlin from 1939 to 1962 and smuggled out in a load of cabbage. Never driven, it remains "brand new." You than proceed up the "Grand Staircase" past a working 1893 Tiffany "Grandfathers" clock with a hand-carved solid mahogany case to the mezzanine where you will see one of the world’s largest collection of radiator cap ornaments--including lalique crystal cap ornaments. Here, too, you will see a collection of Louis XV furniture (which is used).

There were many more items to be seen--the tour lasted about 1½ hours and was quite entertaining. I would have liked to spend more time with the cars, we had about 7 minutes, not enough time. And, unfortunately, they no longer allow special tours of the work area where the cars are being restored. All-in-all, we had a good turnout and I thank you all, some of whom drove up to two hours to get here, for coming. I received several calls asking that we do this again next year-perhaps we will as everyone seemed to enjoy the tour. Carmela L. Tellez Secretary PCA/LA

HAVE REPUTATION ! COMPETITION

Chances are, because we’re right herein Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley vou tend to think of usasa , "little neighborhood shop" specializing in machine work and special parts for Porschesand VW’s. Well, that’s right - we give that sort of "hometown" service you like to get as "one of the gang-" But CE’s fast and friendly way of doing business sort of spread out from here to other folks who also enjoyed the way they were treated as one of our local gang. Maybe we should be open about this _ our "local gang" hails from Honolulu, Houston , Muncie, PomRay Litz" ~no Beach Prescott Richmond, Seattle, St. Paul - even Toronto,

Frankfurt ~elbourn~ Oslo and South Africa (to name a few). But, ~1~~!~ honestly, w~’ll treat you just as well even if your hometown is down
