PCA-LA At A Glance PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.
Subscriptions PORSCHERAMA is available to nonmembers of PCA-LA at the rate of $~2 per year. Send requests to ~9~ ~ Newell Road, Malibu 90265, along with your check, payable to PCA-LA.

The 1981 Zone 8 Presidents Meeting and Awards Banquet was held in Apple Valley on January 16. There were no glaring changes in the Competition Rules aside from those previously reported after the November meeting. We were pleased to have the company of Chick and Sandi Misura from the Rocky Mountain Region. Chick is on the PCR Committee and Sandi is the National Secretary. This meeting was the last fling for Burt Misevic as our Zone Representative. Burt is stepping down after devoting four years of his time to us. Many thanks Burt, for all you have done.
The year is charging forward with an abundance of activities of all varieties planned. Be sure to keep the Calendar and Up and Coming pages posted where you can see them. By the way, check the Up and Coming closely as there are some changes from the first one printed in the January issue. Next month watch for the date of the June Rally/Tour being planned by Judy Wolff. This sounds like a super weekend event. This month’s cover almost wasn’t, We delayed production in order to have a photo cover on the Zone 8 Presidents Meeting and Awards Banquet weekend. Well
Mike Springer from the Orange Coast Region was formally introduced as the new Zone Rep. Mike has been an avid Porsche Pusher for years and we know he will do an excellent job. Welcome aboard Mike.
as they say -"the best laid plans Ofoo." Connie was supposed to give Judd the 35mm camera - she forgot. Did remember to take it to the Banquet - even shot a full 36 roll - all blank~ Panic call
Among the candidates submitted for Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year was our own Connie Fern. The nomination of Connie was kept secret from her until the list of candidates was announced at the Awards Banquet. Although Connie was not selected (she had some pretty heavy competition) I would like to publically express the Region’s appreciation for all she has done the past year. Thanks Connie, for a job well done and all your support throughout 1981. The successful nominee for Enthusiast of the Year was Ron Hughes of the Orange Coast Region. Ron was active in all aspects of the Porsche Club during the past year and is truly deserving of the award. Congratulations Ron.
to Judd, "did Nicki get any pictures wi~h her camera?" Thanks Nicki, for saving
I would like to formally welcome back Lee Burton from his short absence from PCA. It’s nice to have you. with us again Lee. Does anybody know why Don Crane switched from Zorro to the Campus Queen?
the day. Doug Anderson has offered to help keep the production of the newsletter on time. Deadline dates will be firm. Deadline for all material is the first Wednesday of each month. Help us make this year’s PORSCHERAMAs the most informative, fun, entertaining, etc. Your contributions are appreciated and enjoyed by all. Till next month. ConnieLarknAnn

"The ass will carry his load, but not a double load; ride not a free horse to death." by Don Quixote cr1600 "Be true to your teeth or they’ll be false to you." Soupy Sales cr1955 Hi, My name is Doug Anderson. I’m your new technical director. I love Porsche stuff. The design, the finish, the mechanical things and the engineering, It’s fun and I like fun. Our L.A. Staff is here to see to it that you have fun so lets begin. My background is varied - machinist, artillery officer, previous owner 1951 and now drive a 1969-912. Autocrosser (Parade class winner) and technical trivia (Bosch 75 and 77 Parade Tech first place). Currently employed with fine Company of New York Life as Southern I California Group Health Claim Manager. am a self taught teacher and just general helper. My main aim is to help you appreciate what a fine car you own. To appreciate what a fine design it is and most of all prepare you to take daily care of it for a long time of driving fun. The next couple of years we plan to reprint old tips, and history for all cars plus current motor sport racing, Oh yes, call me anytime, I"m here to help you. My number is real tough (213)912-2356.
TECHNICAL HISTORY 28 YEARS AGO The first Porsche service manual was printed. Until that time, they used only the service bulletins and Volkswagen Manuals. The introduction starts: "The Porsche type 356 is closely related to the VW. These two Porsche creations have many features ih common, not only technically, but also in regard to popularity gained on the roads and race courses of the world." "There is likewise a close relationship between our sales organization, customer service and authorized repair shops. Whereas over half a million Volkswagen cars are in service on every Continent, as pronounced utility cars, there are only several thousand Porsche sports cars on the road. But these sports cars have not failed to excerise on their drivers the unique charm that eminates from the Porsche." 21 YEARS AGO - 1961 Talk of a pure turbine engine development by Porsche for their cars is put to rest by Ferry Porsche. "...I want to emphasize here that in my opinion we are not at the end of the development of the piston engine. The turbine engine will only have a chance in the series production when the two lines of development cross, in other words when turbine power will fulfill the special demands of a passenger car in a more advantageous manner than a piston engine." 10 YEARS AGO

TECH TALK continued
FORMULA ONE UPDATE A total of 31 cars have heen entered in the 1982 Gran Prix season. Only 26 cars can compete in each of the 16 races. Mario Andretti is unlisted as a driver this year. The only American driver is Eddy Cheever for the Talbot/Gitanes V12. The engine is possibly also a BMW Turbo? 1500CC and 570 Horsepower at 10,500 RPM. Not yet fully developed, the engine often develops large holes in its sides with small expensive bits looking for ways to escape. World Champion, Allen Jones has retired from the Champion of Makes, Williams cars. Look for past twice World Champion Niki Lauda to be back driving for McLaren. LongBeach is #4 of 16 GPs. South Africa, Argentina, and Brazil are first. Next month: What happens to the body of the Gran Prix driver during the two hour race. DOUG ANDERSON

ODDS AND ENDS MIDLAND, Tex. -- An extensive preseason testing schedule for the Pennzoil Chaparral has brought the nation’s most famous private road racing course out of mothballs here, Jim Hall’s Rattlesnake Raceway. Hall reported that he plans a complete repaving of the two-mile, eight-turn course that wanders through the brush behind his Chaparral Racing, Ltd., compound south of the city. The former sports car racing champion said that his track will be used extensively during the winter months by Pennzoil Chaparral driver Johnny Rutherford to test the team’s Indianapolis 500 and CART PPG Indy Car series machine for the 1982 season. Rutherford who has done only limited testing here in the last two years, said he was anxiously awaiting the start of the most active preseason test schedule since he ~ame to the Pennzoil Chaparral team in 1980. "I think a multitude of things can be derived from testing at Midland," Rutherford said. "We won’t learn much about how the car will perform at different tracks -- you have to test at the tracks you race on to prove that -- but we will certainly get a jump on some teams by running our car during the winter while they are either snowbound or restricted by the availability of race tracks for testing."
Rattlesnake Raceway also differs from other courses because "it;s not running over hill and dale," Rutherford said. "It’s almost completely flat." Hall admitted that the reactivation of his private racing course is partly due to the increased number of road races scheduled by Championship Auto Racing Teams, the sanction body for all Indy car races except the Indianapolis 500. Races already on the calendar in 1982 will be held on road courses at Cleveland, Riverside, Elkhart Lake, Las Vegas and Mexico City. Repaving was necessary ’ Hall said ’ due to the natural ravages of time. Rattlesnake Raceway was originally built by a group of sports car enthusiasts, including Hall and his partner at the time, Hap Sharp. Hall and Sharp located their racing shop next to the track, and Hall later added the race course to his holdings.
During the 1960s, when Hall was turning out one auto racing innovation after another, Rattlesnake Raceway was one of the busiest two-mile stretches of pavement in Texas and was noted for its sophisticated timing instrumentation.
Rutherford described Rattlesnake Raceway as distinctly different from any of the five road courses CART has scheduled Indytype races for the new season. "The only exception is one turn that is like the first turn in Mexico City," Rutherford said. "It comes at the end of a high speed straightaway, and you go into a diminishing radius turn that really squeezes down tight. Jim (Hall) helped me learn to get through that turn a great deal by letting me run on Rattlesnake a year ago."

PCA/LA Christmas Party/Award Dinner
12 Now that we’re all recuperated from the recent holiday season, it’s time to charge into 1982’s PCA Calendar. It’s really an awesome list. With the expanded numbers of Zone 8 events - there are currently planned eight Time Trials, five Concours and six Rallyes for the Zone 8 year long series and other local PCA activities it gets very hard to find any free time on the PCA overall calendar. Be that as it may, PCA-LA’s Board is still planning on a few simple, socially-oriented events this year; the idea is to balance out the relatively sophisticated Zone 8 competitive events with some more low-keyed, less competitive functions (kinda getting back to the way PCA was a decade or so ago). Since the PCA-LA calendar isn’t completely set for ’82 I’d certainly welcome any suggestions from the membership.
The last weekend, February 27, will see another important Zone 8 event. LA Region will be sponsoring a Zone 8 Rallye; John Williamson will be eventmaster along with Bill Leflang. It promises to be the typical high-class challenging route that these two masters have provided so well before. Again we’ll be needing several people to help work the event -- registration, check points and scoring -- so call John at (213) 391-7118 if you’d like to help out or get more info. See you there~
February’s first activity will be a Time Trial at good old Riverside Raceway. Being a jo#nt event with POC, this weekend will also be a chance for PCA-LA to help our neighbors PCA-Arizona put on an event at organization and staffing of this very big event. Please feel free to come out and help. It’ll be a fun event - the first one after that winter layoff - time to see what Santa may have brought for all us boy and girl racers~ The event itself should be pretty much standard fare - come out and get your 1982 Zone 8 points totals started~ Thursday the 18th will be a Get-Acquainted/ Orientation Meeting at the Yacht Club. This meeting, while meant to help new members feel more at ease with the somewhat arcane PCA system, is really a neat chance to meet some nice prople. Our main emphasis at such a gathering is people - that’s just as important in PCA as the cars, I’d hope. Come on out, all.

The first board meeting of the year was held on January 6th. This will probably be the only short meeting seen this year. The major business of the night was the installation of the new board members; Doug Angerson, Tech Chairman and Brent Morrow as Treasurer. Our new Vice President, John Fels, is new to the position, but a former board member.
PHOTO CREDIT The wonderful photos of the Thanksgiving tour to Tahoe in the January issue were submitted by Duane Alan. Many thanks Duane, and our apologies for losing the credit line last month.
The evening was spent in the orientation of the new members to the functions of their office. Many ideas were tossed around for upcoming meetings and ~vents. By the length of my article you may feel that we’re off to a slow start. Don’t be fooled, we have a busy year planned for you--rest up while you can. Don’t forget the logo contest. Last day to enter will be MARCH 31, 1982. Send your entry to me at 13213 Woodcock Ave, Sylmar, Ca. 91342. February Board Meeting changed to Wed. Feb 10, due to conflict with pre-tech date for Riverside event.
