WINNER - HANDS DOWN

SUPER SUNDAY--That’s what anyone would have called our region’s Lowenbrau/PCA-LA Concours D’Elegance at Temescal Canyon Park on May 16. We were blessed again with a sunny 80°F day. We had twenty competitive entries and a score of other equally nice Porsches on display. The wide-open grassy knolls created an atmosphere of viewing the cars, talking and meeting new and old concours enthusiasts. This concours could just well be a sneak preview to some of the trophy winners at the Parade this year. I’ii bet money and say keep an eye on Roger & Robin Wing’s ’69 912 Targa, Mike & Georgia Springer’s ’78 924, and Ron & Susan Armour’s ’75 911 RSR. Zone 8 concours entries always do well at the Parades (Reno this year) so maybe I’m not taking any risks, c0nt.0n P9.6

PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

GOOD FRIENDS--GOOD FOOD-DUSTY’S FIFTH ANNUAL BARBEQUE! The first two equal the last--or is it the other way around? May 20, 1982 was the night this happened. We got to renew old acquaintances and meet new people. The music was provided by Howard Rogers of ROGERSOUND LABS and the video show courtesy of Rick Jackson. Tim Carmody and David Navarro of Custom Autographics had a display of Porsche art for us to view. One drawing should be hanging on Coralee’s wall. Sure looked like her car. This is the L.A. Region’s premier event of the year. A great social get-together. By serving the chili, I at least got to say "hi" to everybody. For those of you who don’t want to concours, rally or time trial, this is the type of event to come to. Everybody is relaxed and enjoys themselves--once again, good food and good company. Thanks to all the people who supported the barbeque and most of all to Dusty who made it all happen.

We hope the early arrival - or perhaps we should say the on time arrival of this issue isn’t too much of a shock. With Parade falling at the end of the month we were inspired to get everything going according to schedule. Our production staff has a new member this month Coralee Ellison. We welcome her and hope the first production evening did not scare her away. There have been several additions and corrections to the calendar - so make sure you check it carefully. The Tech Session scheduled in August at Pete ZimmermanIs Redline Service will be on the topic, How to Buy a Used 911. More details in next month’s issue. The Board is beginning to set the gears in motion for the next election. If you are interested in running for any of the positions open this coming year talk with a Board member - don’t sit back and wait for someone to come to you. ConnieLarknKen

Remember, there is no meeting in June. Hope to see you at the Parade or the 4-Club Time Trial July I0 & II. If not, the next membership meeting is Come out and participate. July 15th.

A FIRST AT SHAFTER .......

Judd Boykin once again missed that

Thirty entrants and all their support crews ventured to Bakersfield and envrions to take part in the inaugural Zone 8 Time Trial at Shafter Airport. This was a joint venture sponsored by Golden Empire/ Orange Coast Regions and co-chaired by Bob Jones and Holly Paine. Our hats off to both for a well run first effort.

TTD homor by a cat’s whisker, with the respectable time of 1:09.74. Len Cushman astounded all with his performance - they’re still talking about his two wheeler thru the final turn. Beware the Turtle!!!!! Coralee Ellison ran in the men’s class and won a first place, Dave Givens placed second and trophied. Another trophy winner was Ken Becker in his 924. Congratulations to all.

The setting was reminiscent of Sebring old runways with wild grasses growing up between cracks in the surface small planes sharing the area (on different runways, of course) flat area surrounded by agricultural area - old WWII planes in old hangers adjacent to the field the major missing ingredient was the smell of orange blossoms. The course - 1.2 miles - was fairly tight in several locations (notably the esses and what became affectionately called "the pot=hole turn"). Although there were two places where 4th gear could be used it was more of a high speed slalom than a time trial course. Someone referred to it as a "Tralom" course. Everyone enjoyed the challenge and were rewarded with lots of practice time and the joy of cold beer at the end of a hot day on the track and in the pits. Saturday evening found almost everyone back at the hotel enjoying getting to know each other over drinks and dinner. After dinner a large number ended up in the Armours’ room watching the video tape of the day’s events. Sunday’s practice and timed runs went off with extremely weT~ - the list of results appears elsewhere. Special mention of the outstanding drive by LA’s own RICK JACKSON. His scorching 1:09.61 gave him his first TOP TIME OF DAY. Congratulations Rick, it was an honor well deserved.

MISCELLANY

By the time you read this, everyone will know if L.A. Is The Place for the ’84 Parade. Well, since you know, will you please tell me. I’m already getting nervous about it since the ’Board’ has volunteered to do great bodily harm to my body if we don’t get the bid in Reno. Whatever happens, I wish to thank Judd, Connie, John Fels, Dusty, Ken Ito, Sam, Brent, Carmela, Jose & Lark, and all of the many others both within the region, and in other supportive regions who have helped in many ways--sometimes with just an encouraging word at the needed time. A special thanks to Ken Ballard who has used his special talents to create some minor miracles to aid in the presentations and who has had the patience to listen to my ideas and tactfully point out the right way to approach things. THANK’S KEN. By now also you have all received the notice about Regional Dues of $15o00 (ouch). Sorry ’bout that, but with the cost of events going up faster than revenues, there was not much choice. I hope you all can see it thru to continue on the Active Member rolls for PCA/LA.

This year’s concours was sponsored by Lowenbrau and on hand to assist in the trophies presentation was Xavier "Mr. X" Hermosillo, Public Relations Manager for the Miller Brewing Company in Irwindale. Plaques were awarded to the class winners. Overall Concours Division was won by Mike & Georgia Springer; Overall Street Division was won by John Cesareo in his ’59 356A Cabriolet. They received silver bowls mounted on mahogany bases. The Sponsor’s Favorite Trophy, a beautiful wood framed clock, was presented to Roger & Robin Wing for their 912. Mr. X also provided promotional items to each entrant, all the hard working judges and workers. If that wasn’t enough, the door prizes of a knitted afghan, 12 pub mirrors and 3 gold plated belt buckles made this a rewarding event.

I wish to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the judges~ workers, Department of Recreation & Parks, Miller Brewing Company and especially Mr. X for making this event possible.

July’s Activity Calendar will be light as usual. We’ve just had PCA’s Annual Parade in Reno and probably most of us will be planning family vacations about now. The main event for this month is the 4-Club Time Trial to be held July lO & II. Last year’s event, held between PCA, POC, the Ferrari Club and the Pantera Club, was a rousing success, The Ferrari and Pantera drivers were really awed by how the Porsche Clubs ran the event; our drivers really turned on to beat the Italians. This year’s event will be limited to 200 drivers! We’ll be featuring video tapes of our cars on the track and we’ll see the replays at a Saturday evening party at the Riverside Inno It will be a sensational event--come on out with cameras and picnics even if .you don’t care to Time Trial your own baby. The other event of note for July is the General Membership meeting for Thursday, July i7th. We’ll be gathering at Vasek Polak Porsche/Audi, 199 Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach° We’ll get to inspect the great new 944 models, speak with Vasek’s sales and service representatives and PCALA will manage a beer and Bratwurst spread. We are expecting a lot of new faces at this meeting~ so come out and have a super evening. See our flyer for more details.

INT’L. WINE & FOOD FEST "PROGRESSIVE STYLE" What has 120 tires, roams around the county, and is treated to various forms of delicacies from around the world? That’s right, the International Wine and Food Fest! Starting from Holly Payne’s home the participants will enjoy many treats of both culinary specialties and driving adventures. To accomodate the work that must go into this event please have your R.S.V.P. in prior to August 13th, and remember that there is a limit on the number of participants. Contrary to what you may have heard, the tour will not end in Bakersfield. COST°

y popular request, the Third Annual Porsche/ Corvette Challenge will be held this year. After a one year absence, here we go again. There has been much shuffling of the date, but it’s now fixed on August 1, 1982. San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium will be the site. 8:30 A.M. practice will start. As many of you may remember, the first year we were done in by a technicality. A loss is still a loss. The next year we were overwhelmed. There were several reasons, not the least of which was the use of a particular brand of tires by the best Corvette drivers. This is all behind us now. This year, things will be different. For one thing, many more of you have been slaloming. What that means is more experienced drivers and better prepared cars. There is no substitute for experience. On that note, it would behoove those of you who plan to enter this event to attend at least one Asebring Slalom. These are the kind of slaloms the Corvette owners are used to. The first two Challenge Slaloms have created plenty of enjoyment. Also, many hours of enjoyable bench racing. The Corvette Club points toward these dates with much pride. The Porsche Club can do the same. Between the newspaper and television coverage, both clubs have gotten fabulous exposure to the public, This year’s event will be no different. Alright, mark your calendars, prep your cars, and hone your skills. Let’s go out and do our thing. If

you’d like to help, call me. I could use your h~ put on this fun event. Most of the nitty-gritty details are worked out, so brawn is needed. Jump in and volunteer. Registration will open at 7:30 and close at 12:30. Practice will be from 8:30 to 12:00 with three runs. Timing commences at 12:30 with three timed runs. There will be a closed pit area, which means spectators must park outside. Other rules include: -- Basic slalom rules apply to each club per their internal byqaws --Closed run group and pregrid --Two cars to make a class (see classification below) --A car may be entered in one class only --Only one male/female driver per car (male/female must compete in their respective class only) --Trophies will be awarded for every three cars, i.e., 1-3 cars one trophy, 4-6 cars two trophies, etc. --For overall championship between clubs, points will be awarded on a participation basis. If you’ve any questions or just can’t wait to help, call me. JOE WEBER 460-5820 (evenings)
