Dear Friends It is with great regret that I must resign from PCA-LA.

213/398-2217

My ’G7 911S coupe, which I raised from a pup, was 5old last November, I will not go into the reasons for the 5ale, other than to say that they were economic and soc}ological. Looking back on my years of membership in PCA, I am most grateful for the ability to learn to drive my car on race tracks, in rallies, and in parking lot 51aloms. After all that, everyday driving seems like slow motion. I will miss driving on race tracks--they’re the only places where people with steering wheels in their hands know what they’re doing--well, most of them. But I am better able to cope with life at 60 m,p.h, aftr having done 120 on the straight. Thanks also for the camaraderie. (Please note correct spelling!) Keeps the revs up~

While labeled a "Ladies Tech," men are encouraged to attend and the experience will be meaningful to novices as well as those of you with some mechanical experience. This will be an opportunity to learn more about inspecting and preparing your Porsche for speed events, as well as learning about general maintenance and handling roadside emergencies. One of our most successful events for 1986 was the Malibu View Rally. This year, Jon Schiewe will attempt to surpass his 1986 effort by pulling a few tricks and, perhaps, a treat or two at the 1987 Halloween Rally on (obviusly) October 31. Membership meetings have been scheduled to coincide with social or tech functions. On February 19th we held our first meeting at the Tire Center in Pasadena, with a presentation on current trends in the design of tires for your Porsche as well as how to choose and tweek them for various competition events. The next meeting was May 21 for dinner, with a movie entitled "Never Give Up" about the 1986 Indianapolis 500 produced by Valvoline Oil. Our traditional Dusty’s BBQ has been set for Thursday night, September 17, at Rancho Park in Century City. Let us know your opinion regarding whether you prefer a weekday or weekend setting as there is still time to reschedule. NEW L.A. HOTLINE After years of maintaining the L.A. Hotline phone, ex-President John Fels, as one of his parting gestures to

INDEPENDENT REPAIR AND SERVICE FOR PORSCHE

Los Angeles, relinquished our phone to Vice President Connie Fern, who graciously volunteered to install the phone and answering machine in her office at Porschop. We are proud to announce our new PCA-LA HOTLINE number is (21 3) 390-7271. Our thanks to both Connie and John. The recording on the Hotline is designed to provide potential new members with brief information on the region and a place to leave their name and address so we can send them a membership application. Also, Connie will try to include brief updates on current LA region activities. This could be particularly useful in case you need to know last minute information about an event.

Approximately 70 cars of all years and make showed up for the event. This year, PCA in conju nction with SCCA and the Classic Car Club co-sponsored the concour. We started the season with familiar faces and new cars. Sizing up the competition, particularly for the Parade in Dallas, John and Kim Tolen’s white ’74 Carrera and John Mitsuuchi’s peru red ’76 turbo will be stiff com.oetition for Joyce and me.

RENO, Nevada-- Porsche Cars North America. Inc. is now offering retail financing and dealer inventory financing through its financial arm, Porsche Financial Services. "We’ve been looking for ways to better serve our customers and our dealers," explained John A. Cook. president and chief executive officer of PCNA "These two new programs are intended to make it easier for our customer to own Porsches when their new cars are financed at our very competitive interest rates." Authorized Porschedealers can obtain retail financing for their customers at rates well below most major retail financial sources and for a maximum term of 60 months. Financing for used cars is also offered through Porsche Financial Services. In addition to retail and dealer inventory financing,

of tech sessions to be scheduled perhaps over a couple of years or more, the car wil be restored mechanically and physically, inside and out. The restoration will be done by members with assistance of experts in the various elements of restoration,

fAILLIG~fS,

The purpose is to provide an in-depth multi-session class with hands-on practice for those of you who are in the process or planning your own restoration, regardless of how extensive. Ultimately, the completed car will be displayed at various events, hopefully including a PCA Parade. It is an ambitious project, but if we can locate the right "wreck" it could be not only an extremely worthwhile project but also very newsworthy. Finding the right car is the key. As the treasury would prohibit purchase of such a car, we are looking for the help of a member willing to donate one, or possibly take a lien on the car until it is ultimately sold. If you have such a car, we want to hear from you. If you want to participate in the tech sessions, we want to hear from you. Call Kirk Shimazu (213) 306-9444 to get involved.

Job t"~r~, ~,.~l,,..vn.. #~,1~’~ o~ After three years as editor, I can feel the beginning of burnout. The bi-monthly responsibility is getting tiresome and my law practice has grown to the point where I have major time problems. Therefore, I am announcing early that 1987 will be my last year as editor and my last year on the Board. This is announced now so you budding journalists out there will have time to consider volunteering. There is time involved, but the work is not difficult. It is mostly a function of gathering information and writing a short bi-monthly column. Please give this your consideration.

To Compete Or Not To Compete Jeff Bear’s article in this issue certainly points out a year full of activity. Note that not all activites are competitive. I know that many members compete all week long and are not looking for more hassles in their relaxation time. I think you will find that your Board is accommodating you. Zone 8 will have special events such as tours planned this year, and PCA/LA will try to emulate this trend as the year progresses. I also believe that most of the so-called "competitive" events can be, and are, enjoyed without having to compete. I don’t rallye to win trophies. I don’t win very often. I rallye to get outside in the Porsche, enjoy some scenery, have fun and meet people. Winning is secondary. Time ~reg[ E.~lenl~olm Ra¢in~ 477-4297 477-4298

trialing and especially slalom are great ways to learn to become better drivers and Porsche handlers and can be lots of fun even if you place last. Concours has a street division for the non-meticulous and you need not enter your car to enjoy a day of fresh air, beautiful cars and camaraderie. Those who do not participate either do not have the hmeoraretoolazytoget out Thats OK too. Ifeelthat way often and when I do. I stay home But let us not rationalize and say ’1 dont want to compete. Competing is not a pre-requ~site to having fun with your Porsche ¯ Jon A. Schiewe. Editor
