Welcome to the first edition of Torque Magazine for 2020. I am pleased to share with you some exciting evolutions in the Porsche range, beginning with the eagerly anticipated arrival of the relentless 911 Turbo S models in the second half of this year.
Kate Holcombe Marketing Manager Porsche Centre Melbourne
It is wonderful to see the PCM Classic Department continue to expand and evolve as an integral part of our business. In late 2019 the classic expertise of the dealership was showcased at Motorclassica with a theme of ‘from the workshop to the road’. Taking centre stage on our stand was a 1972 911T which continues to be worked on and restored as a labour of love; a story as emotional and symbolic as the restoration itself, highlighted on pages 42 and 43.
Llewellyn Richards CRM Specialist Porsche Centre Melbourne
On pages 16 and 17, I recount my trip in February to the Porsche Ice Experience program in Levi, Finland. The Arctic Circle provides the perfect setting for clients to drift on extensive ice tracks and refine their handling skills, whilst forming new friendships and memories to last a lifetime. A trip made even more special with overseas travel and Porsche adventures briefly on hold.

In March we hosted our GT clients for an open track day at Phillip Island. A picture perfect day where we also unveiled the new 911 GT2 RS MR conversion kit, now available through PCM Motorsport. In recent weeks we have launched Porsche Centre Melbourne Virtual Cars & Coffee. I invite you to stay in touch with the dealership via social media and join us for one of our upcoming interactive sessions. Topics range from current to classic models, so we hope to see you online soon! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our valued clients for your continued support. We hope that you and your family are well at this time and look forward to welcoming you back to the dealership soon. Happy reading!

GT Open Track Day It was our pleasure to host PCM GT clients for an open track day at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on Thursday 12 March. 4 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
This dedicated PCM track day provided the opportunity for guests to experience the full capability of their GT models on one of the world’s premier racing circuits, under the expert guidance of the Porsche Track Experience Instructors. The iconic racing circuit was the perfect environment to showcase the new 911 GT2 RS MR conversion kit from Manthey-Racing, now available through PCM Motorsport.
911 GT2 RS MR On Thursday 25 October 2018, the Porsche GT2 RS MR with 515 kW (700 PS*) completed a lap of the 20.6-kilometre long circuit in 6:40.3 minutes. No other road-legal vehicle has ever been so fast on ‘The Green Hell’ track. * PS (PferdeStärke, German for horsepower) is the standard unit used in the European Union to measure the power output of a motor in ‘metric horsepower’.
MANTHEY-RACING Manthey-Racing GmbH is the most successful Porsche racing team worldwide and calls the Nürburgring its home. The company specialises in developing and driving Porsche race cars, but also delivers services for road vehicles from Zuffenhausen.

International Launch
PCM Motorsport Manager, Karl Batson, and PCM Service Manager, Giles Hunter, were invited in November to attend the exclusive global launch of the 911 GT2 RS MR Conversion Kit in Meuspath, Germany. During their visit they had the opportunity to discover first-hand the advantages of the Manthey-Racing product range and how they can increase your GT vehicle’s race track potential. With a unique 'behind the scenes' tour with some of Karl's former motorsport colleagues and a catch-up with PCM's apprentice of the year, this trip perfectly encapsulated PCM's history, link and commitment to Porsche Motorsport.
8 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Above: Karl Batson was reunited with some former race team colleagues from his years spent working in Europe with Carrera Cup, Supercup & FIA GT teams, racing at iconic tracks such as Spa, Monaco, Nürburgring and even Le Mans. The four pictured still work together but are now responsible for maintaining and restoring the Porsche Museum collection. Right: What a close friendship Karl and Achim Schmied share. The humble legend is the man behind the building of all prerelease GT3, GT3 RS, RSR and special project race engines for the past two decades. Having worked for 35 years at Weissach, his craftsmanship is renowned worldwide; we are so fortunate to have both Karl and Brian Hammond trained by Achim in the art of building Porsche race engines. Karl and Brian’s loyal friendship with their ‘German brother’ has become a real asset to our PCM Motorsport team. Today at PCM Motorsport, Brian continues to build Cup Car engines and is easily the most experienced Cup Car builder in Australia, having built 100s of engines (GT3 road and GT3 Cup Car engines) for the Australian Carrera Cup Series.
Above: Giles and Karl caught up with PCM apprentice Jack Chaplin whilst in Stuttgart. Jack was the recipient of the 2018 & 2019 Kangan Batman TAFE Apprentice of the Year Award. In recognition of his achievement, Jack was sent to Germany to work and learn in both factory-owned dealerships and Weissach. This is the third year in a row that a PCM apprentice has won this award and been sent abroad.

Porsche completes the Macan series with a distinctly sporty model. The new Macan GTS launches with a powerful engine, performance-oriented chassis, characteristic design and enhanced equipment. The 2.9-litre V6 bi-turbo engine delivers 280 kW (380 PS*) – an increase of 15 kW (20 PS*) compared with the previous model. The maximum torque of 520 Nm (plus 20 Nm) is available over a wide range from 1,750 to 5,000 rpm. Combined with the newly adapted PDK dual-clutch transmission and the optional Sport Chrono package, the Macan GTS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping control system has been specially tuned, and the chassis has been lowered by 15 millimetres. Adaptive air suspension is optionally available, allowing the chassis to be lowered by a further 10 millimetres. Acoustically, the standard sports exhaust system specifically adapted to the GTS accentuates the driving pleasure.
INDIVIDUAL DESIGN WITH BLACK ACCENTS The new Macan GTS also emphasises its sporty status visually. The standard Sport Design package with new front and rear trim and striking side skirts lends the car a characteristic appearance. The LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and the three-dimensional rear lights with LED light bar are also darkened. The LED headlights can be optionally ordered in black with PDLS Plus. The lower chassis, 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels in Satin-Gloss Black, red brake calipers and trim strips in High-Gloss Black, emphasise the high-performance appearance. ICE EXPERIENCE FINLAND
SLEEP, DRIFT & REPEAT!
The Porsche Ice Experience program provides the perfect playground for participants to push sports cars to the absolute limit. The Arctic Circle in Finland is the ultimate destination.
TORQUE | 15
‘The most fun we have ever had on four wheels.’
For PCM clients, the opportunity to trade the iconic Australian summer traditions for an Arctic Adventure is fast becoming a favoured summer enhancement, and one that their family and friends are subscribing to as well. In February, 28 clients joined PCM staff hosts in the Arctic. A third of the group were returning drifters, familiar with the experience but looking to advance and take their handling skills to the next level.
The varied tracks offer staged degrees of difficulty, with a Porsche line-up to match. This year, ice drivers had the opportunity to drift the 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera 4S, Panamera Sport Turismo and the highly anticipated Taycan Turbo S. For PCM clients having the opportunity to see, drive and drift the Taycan Turbo S was very special, something they completed well before the planned Australian debut in late 2020.
Drivers join the Porsche Ice Experience programs for many reasons. A trip to the Arctic is perfectly combined with nearby Helsinki, Copenhagen, or igloo stays further north. For others, they attend with varied on-track experiences and a great sense of passion to do something they’ve never done before: develop their rally and handling skills on the ice.
Unbeknown to our drifters, as a result of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, this trip would be cemented in our memories as being even more special, with overseas travel, and Porsche adventures briefly on hold.
First-time drifters completed Porsche Ice Experience, whilst returning PCM guests completed Porsche Ice Force. For serial drifters Ice Force Pro and Ice Cup are available, something to consider for 2021 and beyond!

Clients recently penned their thoughts on the February trip:
“The best experience, can’t wait to go back!”
“Drifting, driving a snow mobile to a scrumptious Finnish dinner cooked over the fire, and building new friendships were absolute highlights. I would encourage every Porsche owner to join the Ice Experience program at least once in their lifetime!” “It’s a great location with extensive ice tracks offering some of the finest handling and drifting opportunities, great Porsche hospitality and generous amounts of driving time.”

THE NEW 718 GTS 4.0 MODELS
DRIVING PLEASURE...
Porsche is adding two distinctly sporty and high specification models to its mid-engine sports car range: the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0.
18 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
SP ORT Y T WINS PACKED WITH FOUR L I T R E S O F D I S P L A C E M E N T.
...FOR ALL THE
SENSES
The new two-seaters are powered by a 294 kW (400 PS*) four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, based on the engine used in the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4. When combined with the manual six-speed transmission and sports exhaust system, this results in exceptional power delivery, and a particularly rewarding driving experience. It achieves the sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293 km/h.
Thanks to standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, as well as a 20 millimetre lower ride height and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential, the new generation GTS achieves a remarkable balancing act between dynamic handling and everyday comfort. The standard Sport Chrono package with upgraded Porsche Track Precision App also emphasises the athletic
character of the mid-engine sports cars. Black contrasting design elements and a dark AlcantaraŽ interior create highlights typical of GTS models. As with the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4, the powerful four-litre engine is characterised by exceptional efficiency. Adaptive cylinder control that alternately switches off one of the two cylinder banks at low loads, direct fuel injection with piezo injectors and a variable intake system also contribute to the car’s efficiency.
TORQUE | 19
The GTS engine also impresses with its superior power reserves and immediate response characteristics. It effortlessly revs to 7,800 rpm and, thanks to the standard sports exhaust system with dynamic damper control, also enjoys the acoustic advantages of the rich six-cylinder boxer engine sound. The 718 GTS 4.0 models adopt the twin tailpipe sports exhaust system from the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. With its saddle-type design, this creates space for the contrasting black rear lower section that was specially developed for the GTS models. With exceptionally precise handling, agile steering and responsive cornering, the chassis promises an exciting driving experience. It combines dynamic handling with suspension comfort that is suitable for everyday use. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is part of its standard equipment. This goes hand in hand with a chassis that has been lowered by 20 millimetres in standard form. Optionally, the PASM sports suspension lowers the body by just 10 millimetres.
20 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Other standard equipment includes performanceorientated components such as Porsche Stability Management (PSM) with separately selectable PSM Sport mode, the Sport Chrono package including the upgraded Porsche Track Precision App, Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential. The mid-engine sports cars are fitted with 20inch light-alloy wheels in Satin-Gloss Black. High-performance tyres surround the enhanced brake system, which features cross-drilled discs and red calipers. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are available as an option. Dark, contrasting details reflect the particularly sporty status of the GTS cars, which applies to the spoiler lip, the all-black air intake of the Sport Design front apron, the front fog light lenses, the rear light lenses and the redesigned lower rear bumper.

In the interior, dark Alcantara® creates a sporty, elegant ambience. This is used for the centre panels of the standard Sport Seats Plus, as well as the steering wheel rim, centre console, gear lever and armrests on both doors. In the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, it also covers the A-pillars and the roof lining. The optional GTS interior package adds another colour: the choice here is between Carmine Red or Chalk. This accentuates the rev counter, seat belts, all decorative seams including the embroidered GTS emblem in the headrests and the Porsche lettering on the floor mats with black borders. The trim elements, as well as the centre console trim, are made of carbon. The 718 GTS 4.0 models come as standard with Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and the Sport Chrono package, including the enhanced Track Precision App. The BOSE® Surround Sound System and Burmester High-End Surround Sound System are available as options. THE NEW
911 TURBO S
UNPRECEDENTED POWER, DRIVING DYNAMICS AND COMFORT 22 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
PORSCHE 911 TURBO S
Definitely 911, definitely Turbo, definitely new: the new Porsche 911 Turbo S. The new range-topping 911 delivers 478 kW (650 PS*) for unprecedented power, driving dynamics and comfort. A new 3.8-litre boxer engine with two VTG turbochargers is the beating heart of the car and delivers 51 kW (70 PS*) more than its predecessor. The maximum torque now reaches 800 newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm). The Turbo-specific eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) cuts the sprint from zero to 100 km/h to 2.7 seconds (a decrease of 0.2 seconds), while the top speed is unchanged at 330 km/h. Available in CoupĂŠ and Cabriolet form, the 911 Turbo S will arrive in Porsche Centres around Australia in the second half of 2020. The dimensions of the 911 Turbo S have been increased significantly in line with the enhanced driving dynamics. Modified track widths, further developed aerodynamics and the new mixed-size tyres contribute to its agility and sportiness. The adaptive aerodynamics now include controlled cooling air flaps at the front, while the larger rear wing has been designed for even more downforce. For the first time, the 911 Turbo S transfers its power to the road with mixed tyres in two different sizes: 20-inch tyres at the front and 21-inch tyres at the rear.
New optional equipment has been introduced, including the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports chassis and the sports exhaust system with adjustable flaps that guarantees a distinctive sound. The completely new engine of the 911 Turbo S is based on the 911 Carrera engine generation. It features a completely redesigned charge air cooling system; new, larger VTG turbochargers in a symmetrical layout with electrically adjustable wastegate flaps, as well as the use of piezo injectors, which have significantly improved the vehicle’s characteristics with regard to responsiveness, power, torque, emissions and revving ability. The new six-cylinder engine is aspirated by a new intake system. Part of the process air now flows through the characteristic Turbo air intakes in the rear side sections. In front of the air filters, now situated in the rear wings, two other airflows have also been incorporated, through the rear lid grille. This means the new 911 Turbo S has four intakes with a larger overall cross-section and lower resistance, helping to improve engine efficiency. Two symmetrical turbochargers with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) and larger dimensions replace the previous identical parts, with the compressor and turbine wheels now rotating in opposite directions. The harmonious design, which perfectly balances driving pleasure, dynamics and sportiness, is ideally suited for everyday use, as well as the race track. The leap in performance of this new generation is particularly noticeable in the sprint from zero to 200km/h at 8.9 seconds; one full second quicker than its predecessor.
TORQUE | 23
Thanks to the enhanced Porsche Traction Management (PTM) allwheel drive, the transfer case can distribute significantly more torque, with up to 500 Nm being transferred to the front wheels. The new generation of the standard PASM chassis is also even sportier. Faster and more precisely controlled dampers provide significant advantages to the driving dynamics with respect to roll stability, road holding, steering behaviour and cornering speeds.
24 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
The new front end with wider air intakes has a characteristic Turbo-look with dual front light modules, as well as standard LED matrix headlights with dark inserts. The redesigned, pneumatically extendable front spoiler and the larger rear wing deliver 15 per cent more downforce. The muscular rear wing sections with integrated air intakes emphasise the sleek body of the 911 Turbo S. The new look of the rear is completed by rectangular tailpipes in High-Gloss Black, typical of the Turbo. The interior has a high-quality and sporty finish. The standard equipment list includes a full leather interior and carbon trim in combination with light silver accents. The 18-way adjustable sports seats feature stitching that pays homage to the first 911 Turbo (type 930). High-quality graphic elements and logos in the instrument cluster complete the characteristic Turbo S features.

PORSCHE IN MOTION
BALLARAT In late 2019, Porsche Centre Melbourne brought the experiential road show, ‘Porsche in Motion’ to the iconic Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. Porsche owners, enthusiasts and fans had the opportunity to experience the latest in the model range, put the 911 through its paces in a virtual reality hot lap and learn about Porsche’s rich history from an expert. Porsche in Motion debuted in 2017 and has since travelled across Australia visiting regional towns and cities. In previous activations, PCM has taken the ‘pods’ to Geelong and Albury. Ballarat is Victoria’s largest inland city, which boasts a thriving hub of arts, events, food and wine, providing the perfect setting for PCM to showcase the brand to the region for the first time. We were joined by many PCM clients who made the trip especially, along with those who reside locally in surrounding areas.
Located 100km north west of Melbourne, in recent years Ballarat has celebrated the rejuvenation of the Lake Wendouree area. With water levels now restored to yesteryear and school rowing returning to the lake, the roadshow was a hit for locals who embraced the opportunity to get up close, learn and experience more about Porsche. Visiting Ballarat was a welcome reminder to staff and clients to relive the joy of road trips, whether it be for a day or a weekend stay. Our team thoroughly enjoyed their time in the region and would like to thank the many hundreds of visitors that came to see Porsche in Motion over the weekend. Stay tuned for upcoming Porsche in Motion trips!

Porsche in Australia
Established in Melbourne for over 65 years, PCM has a rich history as an integral part of the Porsche community in Australia. To celebrate the history, photographs from PCM’s forbearer, Hamilton’s Automotive, dating from the early 1950s, have been collated and shared online via our social channels in recent months. Below you can find an annotated gallery highlighting some of the photos shared so far, including the original Victorian Porsche Dealership located on the corner of Hoddle & Swan streets, Richmond!
Pictured is a previous Melbourne showroom, then named 'Hamilton's of South Yarra', which was located at 681 Chapel street from the early 1970s until the late 1980s, when it moved to the former Bryant & May match factory in Church street, Richmond . Arthur Wylie Motors (later known as Hamilton’s) located on the corner of Hoddle and Swan Streets, Richmond. Porsche new and used car sales in Victoria were conducted from this prominent location in the late 1950s, which no longer exists today.

Few advisors have as much working knowledge as Donovan Lawler, who commenced working with PCM in 1973. He is pictured completing a service on a 928 at the former South Yarra location, circa 1985.

Fuhrmann’s Fabulous Four Cam It is sometimes easy to forget that Porsche, in the years before the 911 was launched, was a fledgling sports car maker working hard to make its presence felt against names that had been around decades longer. Porsche’s relatively humble beginnings were based around the theory of light weight and efficiency to achieve agility and reliability. A big part of the success of the early cars was their basis Volkswagen derived mechanicals. The horizontally-opposed, air-cooled engine that was mounted outboard of the rear axle, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed transaxle wasn’t exotic, nor was it powerful, but it was light, and reliable. With tuning and the substitution of lighter alloy parts, and revision of the carburation and exhaust systems it would be made more powerful and more flexible. By the time the 356 development got into stride, and the 356 became more Porsche and less Volkswagen, the 1600 pushrod over-head valve engine produced around 60 PS* – enough to make the light and robust 356 a contender in the various racing classes that it contested, but not enough to win the European races and defeat the competition that Porsche had in their sights. Porsche knew that to achieve bigger results, they would need an engine that developed more horsepower while fitting in the same space.
30 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
To make a small engine produce more power, one needs more revs and for more revs an engine’s lungs need to fill and discharge more efficiently. An engine’s lungs are its cylinders - the valves, the ports and the exhaust system is the respiratory system. The 356’s respiratory system was limited.
ENTER DR ERNST FUHRMANN. Fuhrmann would ultimately become well known as the chairman of Porsche AG from 1972 through to 1980, but he was a mechanical engineer and his strength and power of knowledge lay in combustion engine valve-trains. In the first few years of the 1950s, Dr Fuhrmann developed the type 547 – an engine that is colloquially known under his name or sometimes as the Porsche “four-cam”.
TORQUE | 31
The idea was simple – to achieve more thorough combustion, the cylinder-filling or “charging” and the subsequent “discharging”, had to be fast. Since the 1930s, mechanical engineers knew that the most efficient way to achieve a cylinder head design that did so was to locate the camshafts over the valves that they operated. Consequently, the valve could be arranged on an incline to the piston’s centreline, making the path that the gasses would flow through far straighter and thus faster – all leading to the desired outcome. However, the 356 engine used pushrods to operate the valves, and there were severe limitations to the shape and direction of the ports, so Fuhrmann set out to re-engineer the cylinder heads so that each row of valves, one for inlet and one for exhaust, could have its own camshaft operating directly on the valves. Simple? Far from it. Fuhrmann’s engine was to have four camshafts and they’d be driven by a series of shafts, turning through 90 degrees via bevel gears, and operating on the inlet and exhaust valves directly. Ignition was by a pair of sparkplugs for every cylinder, timed by a dainty pair of distributers that the engine seems to wear like jewellery. It was a complex engine, a far cry from the humble VW-derived engine that Porsche was used to, but it did develop 130 PS* by being able to spin at over 7,000 rpm – the revs the engine needed!
32 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Fitted to a legendary line-up including the 550 Spyder, 718, Abarth GTL, 356 Carrera and 904, and in the hands of privateers and professionals alike, Fuhrmann’s four-cam propelled Porsche to the forefront of international motorsport, counting five overall wins at the Targa Florio, as well as a mega 16 class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The four-cam family of engines powered no less than 900 different drivers competing in nearly 8,000 professional-level races to a total of 1,000 outright victories, not to mention over twice that many class wins. Respectable. There is plenty that makes the Fuhrmann engine different from other Porsche engines, and one of those things was the engine’s durability. This was partly down to the fact that the 547 was intended solely as a racing engine, and racing engines are used hard and then repeatedly rebuilt. When something better comes along they’re often forgotten. The system of shafts and bevel-gears that drove the cam shafts were prone to wear and breakage, which makes the relative simplicity of the singlecam, early 911 engine look very robust indeed.
So then, what does one do nowadays with a Type 547 engine that requires attention, tuning, servicing – or even a rebuild? One brings it to Porsche Centre Melbourne. And this happened recently when a Melbourne-based enthusiast required the diagnosis and source of brass detected in the oil when the oil was drained from the sump on a routine change. Typically, a diagnosis of an occurrence like this can be traced and rectified easily on the basis of experience and knowledge, the likes of which our PCM technicians have volumes of. They can often determine a part failure via means of basic identification of the metallic substance detected in drained engine oil. Identification made, an engine can be stripped as far as required to replace a part – the part can be easily sourced from the Parts Department, and the repair completed. Not so on the 547.
Diagnosis needs to be performed on a more investigative level, and it was – by Peter Bowen, our Master Classic Technician. Investigation of engines like these is a process that must be undertaken with extreme care and a delicate touch, constantly keeping in mind that the mystique of the fourcam is intertwined with the fact that many of its component parts are no longer available. And this fact alone means that consultation at a higher level will be required. As one of 72 global Porsche Classic Partners, direct access to Porsche Classic enables solutions for us, where attempts by others can end with an unsuitable repair. Photography and video links with Germany determined that the best course of action was for the engine to be crated and returned to Porsche Classic in Stuttgart where, upon arrival it will be stripped, documented and then the parts required will be fabricated correctly from the original drawings drafted by Fuhrmann and his team!

INNOVATIVE DRIVE MACHINES AND DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE With two permanently excited synchronous machines on the front and rear axles, in other words all-wheel drive, as well as a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, the drive architecture comprises the same main technical highlights as on its model counterparts. The same also applies to the intelligent charging management and exemplary aerodynamics. The clear, puristic exterior design with Porsche DNA is also typical for the Taycan, as is the unique interior design with wide display band.
PURISTIC EXTERIOR DESIGN WITH PORSCHE DNA Distinguishing features of the Taycan 4S compared with the Turbo and Turbo S include the aerodynamically optimised 20-inch Sport Aero wheels (standard for Australia) and the red-painted brake calipers. The front apron with new geometry, side sills and rear diffuser in black ensure further visual differentiation. LED headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) are equipped as standard.
36 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
UNIQUE INTERIOR DESIGN WITH A WIDE DISPLAY BAND The cockpit also signals the start of a new era with its clear structure and completely new architecture. The freestanding, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A central 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. As standard, the Taycan 4S comes with a partial leather interior, as well as front comfort seats with 14-way electrical adjustment and memory package (standard for Australia).
CENTRALLY NETWORKED CHASSIS SYSTEMS Porsche uses a centrally networked control system for the Taycan chassis. The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time. As standard, the Taycan 4S features adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology including electronic damper control PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management).
With the Taycan, Porsche offers an entirely leather-free interior for the first time. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.

Motorclassica 2019 THE AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE
Porsche Centre Melbourne returned to the historic Royal Exhibition Building for Motorclassica in October last year with a showcase display highlighting our Porsche Classic Department and status as Australia’s only Porsche Classic Partner. The stand theme was “from the workshop to the road” and featured two classic 911s, both from the same model year in varied stages of restoration: 1972 911T and 1972 911E. This model year is unique in that it was the only one in which the oil filler door was placed on the right fender, later removed due to the risk it of being interpreted as the fuel tank!
The 911T or “Touring” model, this example originally a South African delivery, is currently undergoing a complete factory restoration by the PCM Classic Department. It had recently returned from being repainted in Signal Yellow prior to being put on display, providing the rare opportunity to view up close the underbody. The crank case of the original 2.4 litre engine was fixed on a mount behind the engine bay allowing the inner workings to be observed, with its original parts presented in cabinets. Its completed counterpart, the 911E, whose designation derives from the German word for injection ‘Einspritzung’, was finished in the striking colour of Tangerine Orange with a Brown Pepita interior. In contrast to the 911T, it has been completely restored and is driven daily, showing the end result that can be achieved through a comprehensive restoration. PTO → THE STORY ON THE 911T AND HOW WE’VE PROGRESSED
TORQUE | 41
L ABOUR OF
LOVE
People find themselves with certain cars for so many different reasons. Some people pursue a specific model forever, always seeking the best example they can find and rejecting them all as seemingly “there will be a better one”. Others trip over a particular example without even trying and it starts a lifelong interest. Sometimes, one meets a person who tells a story that involves a car and the interest is so strong that circumstances prevail and well, stranger things can happen – as they did for Allen Hartley. Allen spent his life in the motor trade, holding dealerships for Volkswagen and other brands in his native South Africa before moving to Australia to start a new life. Like many, Allen has always held a soft spot for early 911s and a chance encounter over 10 years ago here in Australia years after he left South Africa lead to an interesting find. Introduced to another South African fellow, Allen quickly found himself on the subject of all things “cars” and before long, his new acquaintance mentioned that his father, a doctor still residing in South Africa, had owned a Signal Yellow 911 since 1972 – when it was brand new. They chatted, and Allen expressed interest in the car, with no clue as to what would eventually unfold. Allen didn’t give the conversation a lot of thought over the following months and years until, one day in 2009 and completely out of the blue, that young man that he’d had a chance encounter with, phoned. He relayed the information that his father had sadly passed away and that his family were looking to move his old Porsche on.
42 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
They’d been made some offers for the car from locals in Newcastle, not far from Durban but remembering Allen’s enthusiasm for the car, the doctor’s son made contact and suggested that if he were willing to match those offers, he was welcome to become the car’s second owner. On the basis of some photos sent by the late Doctor’s son, Allen took the plunge and purchased the car; sight-unseen. Now, albeit the same hemisphere – Allen now owned a car on another continent to the one he lived on and that presented a couple of issues. One was that he’d never seen it, only in photos – and the other was that he had to retrieve it! A trip home was planned, prior to which Allen made contact with the doctor’s widow. On his suggestion that he’d arrange a flat bed to retrieve the car and take it back to Durban, she suggested that was nonsense and that he’d be fine to drive it back. And that’s exactly how it happened. The car was driven the 350km from Newcastle to Durban, where it was stored prior to Allen making arrangements to ship the car back to Melbourne. He recounts that he was notably relived given it had spent a long time not being driven, and was indeed a car of over 40 years of age.

TORQUE | 43
Allen discovered Porsche Centre Melbourne via Giles Hunter. Giles, the Service Manager at PCM, took a phone call one day that told the story of the Signal Yellow 911 that was sold new in South Africa and that perhaps “a little bit of work might be required to make the car roadworthy and safe”. Giles had the 911T brought in, and inspected and needless to say, that plan escalated rapidly. Giles had noticed a small patch of rust on the parcel shelf, and already having seen evidence around the front screen, investigation ensued. The body had suffered the ravages of time and exposure. The engine, gearbox and suspension from wear and tear. The overwhelmingly good news was that the car had never been altered and that everything was there – always the best start for a correct restoration.
44 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
From here began one of the most seemingly straightforward parts of the restoration that often raises the greatest number of hurdles – stripdown. The process involved dismantling the car, storing and cataloguing every part, determining what could be cleaned and reinstated, and what would need replacement. In the case of any Porsche car, this isn’t the most daunting thing in the world – Porsche Parts availability on superseded models is some of the best in the world, and the length and breadth of availability of parts that many marques would consider uneconomical to supply is quite amazing. Porsche Classic in Stuttgart is also constantly hard at work documenting requests on unavailable parts worldwide so that when demands trigger a threshold, drawings are generally retrieved from the archives in Zuffenhausen and re-manufacture is commenced.
This means that both a full restoration like Allen’s, and the part-by-part needs of anyone with a classic Porsche can be satisfied by phoning or calling into the Porsche Melbourne Parts department and speaking to the consultants there – several of whom have been there long enough to very quickly raise an outcome. Once the body was stripped of all the glass, trim, the suspension assemblies, the engine and gearbox and the wiring loom it was off to Skunkworks in Colac where it would stay, not be seen again by us until it looked like it did back in 1972, which meant that at PCM there would be considerable work to be performed. The main task in a restoration where the brief is to return the car back to the state that it was delivered new, is to asses what’s usable – retaining the car’s character is essential, and Porsche Centre Melbourne’s Peter Bowen understands that. The dismantling and cataloguing is thus fundamental, and in turn the identification of parts that will need to be replaced for the car to perform as it is was intended.
As this article is being completed, Allen’s car is taking shape with the wiring loom in place, suspension and running gear hanging from the freshly painted shell, and the mechanical assemblies being readied to be reinstated in the car. Ironically, the car in its current state looks as a 911 would’ve looked as it travelled down the line at Stuttgart Zuffenhausen in ‘72, with everything going back in, in the order it did in the first place. Part of the pleasure of seeing one’s car come together is something Allen takes advantage of, coming in to see the car at Collingwood, and even having the pleasure of seeing the freshly painted shell form part of a display at the 2019 Motorclassica. Allen did just that on a previous 911 that was being restored by PCM, and it was a big part of what spurred him to take the same path with his car. In the coming months, the car will be complete and he can then indulge in arguably the best part – driving what will be a virtually brand new, 1972 911T in Signal Yellow!

PERFORMANCE CAR OF THE YEAR
911 Carrera S wins 2020 MOTOR Magazine Performance Car of the Year The Porsche 911 Carrera S has been named the 2020 MOTOR Magazine Performance Car of the Year at the Australian Motoring Awards. Porsche Cars Australia Director of Sales and Network Development, John Murray, was pleased to accept the accolade: "The stiff competition makes this award even more prestigious. And we're especially pleased to be awarded for a Carrera model, as it shows that exciting performance lives throughout the entire 911 range."
46 | PORSCHE CENTRE MELBOURNE
Porsche has received the MOTOR Magazine Performance Car of the Year award on 15 occasions. Editor of MOTOR Magazine, Dylan Campbell, said: "The best car deserves to win and it has. If you ask any of our judges they will tell you the 911 remains the benchmark of sports cars. With the latest 992 Porsche has made it a more luxurious vehicle but still kept it a raw sports car at its core. Hugely impressive." Just two months earlier, in November 2019, the 911 Carrera S also won Drive Sports Car Over 100K of the Year.
“It’s one of motoring’s most fastidiously evolved nameplates and a prime candidate for ‘world’s finest car’ full stop. That any 911 generation is superb for its time is completely predictable, yet how Porsche manages to raise a new generation’s game over that outgoing (superb) forebear almost beggars belief. It’s inevitably always the benchmark for sports car goodness,” concluded the judges of Drive.

WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR
Porsche Taycan drives home a double victory. The Porsche Taycan has won two categories in the 2020 World Car of the Year Awards (WCOTY), named as World Luxury Car of the Year and World Performance Car of the Year. In the Performance WCOTY category, all three short-listed finalists were new models from Porsche, making for a unique triple. The three finalists were the Taycan, 911 (type 992) and the 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4, with the Taycan named the winner. Eighty-six international motoring journalists from around the world voted and assessed over 50 new cars for this year’s WCOTY Awards.
“This double win in the categories World Performance Car and World Luxury Car underlines what we wanted to achieve when we developed the Taycan,” said Michael Steiner - Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development, Porsche AG. “We wanted to create a driver-focused, fully electric sports car that can take on any performance car. At the same time we focused on uncompromised everyday-usability and contemporary, digital luxury and comfort for four passengers. We are delighted that the WCOTY jury rewards these efforts.”
LONG LIST OF AWARDS IN THE MAIN MARKETS The vote for World Car of the Year continues a winning streak: the Porsche Taycan has already won around 40 international prizes, predominantly in the main markets of Germany, USA, UK and China.

Service Advisor
Lee recently joined the team after spending five years working for another German automotive brand in Melbourne. He hasn’t always been in automotive, originally studying computer systems, engineering, and spending over 15 years in retail sales and finance in his family businesses.
Michelle recently returned to PCM after a six-year tenure concluding in 2012, when she left to pursue a career in the naturopathic industry. As with many of us, the automotive industry is a small circle and can draw you back, which was the case for Michelle earlier this year. After her naturopathic work, Michelle spent time at a few other automotive brands and a panel shop.
Originally from the UK, Derek has been in Australia now for the past 16 years. He has over 22 years’ experience as a mechanic and has worked at several dealerships and private workshops throughout his automotive career.
What he loves most about PCM is the clients, who have openly welcomed him and made his transition seamless and feel like he has been part of the team for quite some time. A bayside local, Lee enjoys spending time in Port Melbourne on weekends, whether it be at the beach or markets. Lee was introduced to Porsche by his Dad who owned a Boxster, however, most recently he has spent more time driving a Macan and Cayenne, which he notes as both fantastic SUV’s.
Michelle enjoys going to the movies, spending time with her friends and holidays (something to look forward to as restrictions are lifted!). Returning has meant reuniting with many longstanding team members and enjoying working with new colleagues too.
Derek enjoys being able to go down to his beach house on weekends, mountain bike riding and cooking - with West Indian curry being his signature dish! To date, Derek has loved becoming familiar and in sync with the Porsche model range and is looking forward to some finer weather when he will be able to enjoy a 911 for the weekend.
