With 125 cars entered, we all got to witness great clean competition, several drivers turning in their personal best and Saturday, after the track went cold, our 2020 Awards Ceremony. Andrew Weyman’s article accompanied by Luis Vivar’s photos detail the event in it’s entirety. This month don’t miss Martin Schact’s review of the latest Garmin™ Driving Performance Optimiser and Dennis Wolfe’s 7th volume of Tenth Chasers. These things and more are covered in this issue. Perfect weather. One hundred twenty drivers. Thirty-eight Red. Twentysix Orange. Twenty-nine TT. Twenty-seven PDS. Annual Meeting. Awards ceremony. Huge. Red Group battles were fierce. On Saturday, Tom Mueller was fastest in his Prototype with a 1:19.437. Steve Parker challenged Les Long in GT1 to be followed by Loren Beggs. Alexandra Hainer was stellar in her GT2 steed bested only by Mike Monsalve. Bob Mueller inhaled Monsalve’s exhaust to finish 3rd in class. It was thrilling to see Duane Selby and Kevin Roush in GT3 side-by-side for a killer lap. Robert Crocker, Kevin Roush and Nathan Johnson finished on the podium in GT3. Selby crossed Start/Finish close behind. Brad Keegan nailed it in GT4 with Ana Predescu and Jim Salzer hot on his bumper. The Orange Group was as competitive as they’ve ever been. In Saturday’s first race, Paul Barnes, Jim Steedman and Robert Thacker climbed the podium in Carrera Spec. Anders Hainer, Scott Craig and James Mcloughlin distinguished themselves in BSR. I had an intense six laps holding off John Momeyer. I felt as good as I ever have at the track until John informed me that his car was twenty horsepower down. Oh well. The second race on Saturday resulted in Paul Barnes taking 1st in SCR once again, followed, 6

once again, by Jim Steedman. This time, Mike Takaki swept into 3rd. In BSR, Anders Hainer blasted into 1st followed by James Mcloughlin and Scott Craig. Branimir Kovac was very close behind. Sunday’s races were even more exciting. The Red Group race started with an incident in T1 and a restart was required. Kevin Roush finished 1st overall, followed by Tom Mueller and Les Long. Charlie Persico had an impressive showing in Prototype. Monsalve took GT2 once again. Crocker took GT3. Keegan was back on top in GT4. In Orange, Paul Barnes demonstrated what his car was capable of, finishing 1st in Carrera Spec one more time. Anders Hainer did it again in BSR. Enough already Anders. Time Trailers Robert Forrester and Terry Davis had impressive runs. Mike Avitt, Greg Gilson and Allen Cravello set the pace. PDS drivers David Hong, Andreas Raab and Rajat Khurana shined. During the course of the weekend the paddock was littered with several cars disabled due to a $10 part, or a blown oil line, or a tired gearbox, or self-inflicted damage. I’m not mentioning any names but… Nigel Maidment. Saturday evening’s festivities included a brief Annual Meeting and an awards ceremony. It was a heck-of-a-lot less formal than years past due to the COVID-19 pandemic but it turned out to be wonderful. For 2021, John Momeyer was elected President. Scott Craig will serve as Treasurer. Nathan Johnson repeats his performance as Secretary and Joe Wiederholt reprises his role as VP of Motorsports. Several Board Members were awarded gifts and a heartfelt “thank you” was offered to outgoing President Ron Palmer, for his incredible dedication and service to our Club. Don Matz was recognized for his many years of service to the Club as PDS Chairman, not to mention his creative graphic design talent we see all the time on our t-shirts, posters, in our email blasts and Velocity. 8

Awards for the Sim Racing Series were all in GT1. Teddy Framhein took 1st, Connor Bloum took 2nd and Matt Hollander earned 3rd. In PDS, Vivek Hazari took 1st in S4 followed by Daniel Ross. Brian Hong earned 1st in S5. Ellie Mcloughlin took home 1st in BSR. Our Time Trial 1st place winner is Frank Gussman in M4. The Orange Cup Race Series BSR champions are Anders Hainer, Scott Craig and Joe Wiederholt. Larry Haase took home the GT5 Championship, Randy Bergun is GT7 Champion and Paul Barnes earned 1st place in SCR. The Red Cup Race Series awards in GT1 went to Eric Olberz in 1st place and Eben Benade in 2nd. Mike Monsalve is 1st in GT2, followed by Alexandra Hainer in 2nd. Nathan Johnson took home 1st in GT3. Darrin Moore placed 2nd, and Duane Selby 3rd. GT4 trophies were awarded to Steve Town, Brad Keegan and Jim Salzer. The trophy for 1st place in Prototype went home with Charlie Persico. Bryan Van Noy earned the prestigious John Deere Award. Eben Benade is the 2020 Service Points Champion. Most Improved Time Trial Driver went to Frank Gussman. Most Improved Cup Racer is Jim Salzer. Rookie of the Year is James Mcloughlin. Driver of the Year is Nathan Johnson. Finally, Member of the Year was awarded to Matt Hollander. The evening was a perfect celebration with Octavio Tequila (a great sponsor) supplied by Bob Mueller and with Stephan Asseo’s donation of L’Aventure Rose. The POC means so much to me. Every event means reconnecting with very special friends and turning up the competition to 11. The Cup Race Season Opener was no exception. In fact, it was exceptional.

Here’s a thought experiment for you: If Slow is Smooth, and Smooth is Fast, then therefore, Slow is Fast. Right? Right. Makes perfect sense. The slower you go, the faster you will be. This is right up there with “stupid is as stupid does, ma’am” and “you can’t see the forest for the trees”, which is to say, on its face, it simply makes no sense whatsoever. But bear with me a second… The essence of all of this wordplay is simply this: the smoother your inputs, the faster your lap times. So let’s discuss your inputs. There are essentially four inputs (three on PDK’s / automatics): steering, throttle, braking, and shifting. And when we say “smooth”, what we’re really saying is “progressive”. Progressive inputs start gently and then rapidly increase their amplitude / effort, as opposed to immediately imparting maximum force. When braking or accelerating, think about “squeezing” the pedals instead of “stabbing” or “stomping” them. Just add a little pressure at first, and then quickly add a LOT of pressure, but in a progressively stronger way. This is all about weight transfer and keeping the chassis in balance. Sharp, abrupt pedal inputs will shift the car’s weight fore or aft too quickly and cost you crucial stability as you set up for the next turn. Likewise, your steering inputs should be smooth and progressive, not jerky. Give the front tires a chance to “set” or “bite” into a turn, and then add more steering input. Jerking the wheel can cause either understeer (the car is plowing and NOT turning) or oversteer (the rear end is breaking loose) depending on how fast you’re going and whether you have a front or rear engine car. For manual transmissions, shifting smoothly is crucial, and that means revmatching on downshifts. Newer cars will do this for you (making you look like a genius), but with older cars, it’s on you to get this right. Heel-toe downshifting is the name of the game here, and if you don’t know what that means, Google it. It takes a lot of practice, but once you get it right, it’s like butter. So once again, in your quest for faster lap times, keep those inputs nice and smooth, and watch those precious tenths fall away. After a canceled December event due to the covid surge, and a January event held at Streets Of Willow, this month’s autocross at El Toro ended a threemonth hiatus, and you could tell everyone was THRILLED to be back!

The weather was perfect (72 and sunny), the track was fast (3rd gear four times!) and the event was completely sold out with lots of new faces. Additionally, club President John Momeyer and AX Chair Michael Oest gave out awards for the 2020 season during our mid-day shutdown, with shiny red jackets going to our class champs, and trophies for second place as well as our special category awards (Driver Of The Year, Most Improved, Member Of The Year, etc). Our Fast Five included James Yom (TTOD), Tom Berry, Michael Oest, Matt Jones and your humble author. 1.21 seconds separated first from fifth. Be sure to check out porscheclub. com for complete timed results and season standings. This month’s featured class is M4, where our very own Competition Director Brian Cooner took top honors, followed close behind by Storm Hagen (only two tenths off!). Rounding out the top 5 are Chris Richardson, Clint Boyd and Michael Evans. Nice work all! Special thanks as always go to our Series and Event sponsors, GMG Motorsports and Autowerkes. All of this is complimented with a 1080p HD video having a 140 º field of vision. In addition, a cigarette lighter USB adapter and power cord are provided. The design and function of the Garmin Catalyst™ is revolutionary, providing overwhelming value compared to existing timing systems, both past and present. ***Keep in mind, typically, to acquire a leading brand entry level data logger and 720p camera, expect to spend about $1,800. Hardware alone, the Garmin Catalyst™ is a bargain, notwithstanding the incremental value provided by the software. Garmin Catalyst™ software and hardware synergizes, providing previously unavailable features such as “real-time” audio prompts as well as post session, proprietary coaching, and identifies the drivers TRUE OPTIMAL LINE, to be found in the three (3) OPPORTUNITIES screens to be discussed in in detail in forthcoming Part 2 of this article. Happily, the coaching information created and provided by the Garmin Catalyst™ is very easy to access, and extremely insightful. For me personally, Garmin Catalyst™ coaching, both audio and post session Garmin Catalyst™ OPPORTUNITY screen review, has resulted in a measurable improvement and my lap times, shaving at least one (1) second off my best time at Buttonwillow, and about the same off my personal best time at Willow Springs. Garmin Catalyst™ has shown me what I have to change at Willow Springs to drop down to a 1:32.84 from a 1:35.4. It only gets better. The 1:32.84 is calculated based on the lines I have driven with my Garmin Catalyst™ at Willow Springs. If I were to make some changes, and optimize my line, as has been suggested to me by my remote Pro-Coach David Scott (dave@racecoach.net), on future upcoming visits, there is no reason, other than shear terror, that I couldn’t get to a 1:29, noting this time would be a POC track record in my M3 class. Now that’s what I am talking about! Starting out with the Garmin Catalyst™ , the ease of the initial set up, in less than 20 minutes, was impressive. I was ready to go, with the unit only requiring only two (2) connections, connect the 1080p HD camera to the Garmin supplied suction cup mount, and a connection from the Garmin Catalyst™ to electrical power from a 12 V. cigarette lighter port, using the adapter, also supplied by Garmin. Fully charging the Garmin Catalyst™ in advance, obviates the need for a connection to 12 V. power, with the integral Li battery having with over two (2) hours 50
of reserve available. As a result of the ease of operation, I was able to utilize the “real-time” audio coaching, and successfully review Garmin Catalyst™ post session visuals, an example displayed below, to make driving improvements throughout the weekend. Note Garmin Catalyst™ “Real-time” Predictive Visual Lap display, seen below, where best lap time of that session, adaptive delta time, number of laps completed and total session time may be viewed. Screen color changes to Green when ahead of the curve, and Red when falling behind. Predictive Lapping is enhanced with sequential audio lap times provided to the driver through a Bluetooth connection into driver’s earbuds, or into a car’s audio system if so desired. For those preferring hard-wired earbuds, a connection is available. This is just the “tip of the iceberg” when it relates to Garmin Catalyst™ audio coaching • 1. Displays the last lap time during the current session, • 2. Displays the best last time of the current session, • 3. Displays the time difference between the current lap and the current laps of the session, • 4. Select end, closes out the current session, • 5. Displays the current lap number, • 6. Displays the total lap time. DRIVER OPTIONAL EXCLUSIVE AUDIO COACHING IN REAL TIME {Drivers new to the track are advised to start with LAP TIMES ONLY. As they become more experienced, advance up the ladder, to RACE COACH, and ultimately, to ADVANCED RACE COACH}. • OFF: Disables audio prompts and CANCEL gets you back to the master AUDIO screen. • LAP TIMES ONLY: Sets the device to provide audio prompts that contain only lap time information, • RACE COACH: Sets the device to give provide basic coaching feedback based on performance. It is possible to add additional prompts to your race coach feedback after drive session is reviewed. (I need to investigate this feature further.), • ADVANCED RACE COACH: Set the device to automatically give advanced coaching feedback during the drive. I have used this and it is mind boggling. The following is a sampling of Garmin Catalyst™ coaching piped into the driver’s earbuds encapsulated in a “Siri” style of voice: • Keep Pushing– no improvement, or worse than average, • Above-Average – better than your average time around this segment, • Nice Work – better than your average time around this segment but not your best, • New Best – this is the fastest you have been around this segment. Drivers also receive POSITIVE FEEDBACK, through their earbuds when the Garmin Catalyst™ takes note of driving improvement. This is timely powerful, and positive reinforcing feedback. • “Good turn-in” • “Good track-out” • “Good apex” • “Good job braking” (later, harder, longer) • “Good job braking” (earlier, softer, less) • “Good job carrying speed” Drivers I have spoken to, having incorporated Garmin Catalyst™ into their driving style, tell me they really appreciate the “real-time” audio feedback. Some have even told me, “With Garmin Catalyst™ prompting me, I don’t get lonely out there running by myself.” As we all know, sooner or later in a DE, a Time Trial or a race, you will be driving by yourself, to a lesser or greater degree. Why not enjoy a little companionship?

POST SESSION EXCLUSIVE FEATURES Easily accessible post-session dynamic displays of three (3) OPPORTUNITIES, identified by Garmin Catalyst™, are provided. These three (3) OPPORTUNITIES are prioritized in their order of the magnitude of time savings available, the greatest first, and so forth, and are readily available and accessible for viewing on the Garmin Catalyst™screen by the driver. Also note, no other devices, such as a laptop, are required to access the data. Let’s dig deeper. Here, we see the OPPORTUNITY SUMMARY screen, displaying Date and Time across the top of the screen. In column #1, observe: • Best Lap, a 1:35.40 • (TRUE) Optimal Lap, a 1:35.14* Note: Adam Spence from Garmin explains how the TRUE OPTIMAL LAP is calculated here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=qwiRvXuMAq8 This is a must view video if one is to grasp the unique approaches used by the Garmin Catalyst™, • Top 3 VARiance (%) 0.88%: This is the variability across your fastest three (3) laps of the session, (Not consecutive laps as in BEST SEQ VAR) {Measure of consistency}, • TRACK CONDITIONS: DRY/WET {Entered by user prior to initial track entry} In the second column we see: • Total Time 25:48 (Track time in that particular session), • Best SEQuential VARiance: .88% This is the best sequential variability across the fastest three (3) consecutive back to back laps, {Measure of consistency} • Top 5 VARiance: 1.99% This is the variability across fastest five (5) laps, (Not consecutive laps as in BEST SEQ VAR). {Measure of consistency}. And on the bottom right of the screen, see a thumbnail video symbol. Click on this and view all of the video accumulated over that session, blown up to Garmin Catalyst™ full screen, in incredible detail, thanks to that HighDef camera with a 140 º field of vision. With the Garmin Catalyst™, the driver not only has the delta between their best time, compared to the achievable TRUE OPTIMAL LAP time, but video of this process readily available for viewing, corner by corner. Also note, video of all of the driver’s saved sessions are available, the space available on the Micro-SD card being the pacing item. Storage space consideration may be optimized by installing a higher-capacity Micro-SD card or using the intelligent auto-delete feature. When viewing a video, in addition to starting/ending the video, the following operations are available: • Reverse the video, • Stop it at will, at any point on the track, • Segue to Slow Motion, • Skip ahead to segments that follow. TRUE OPTIMAL LAP Overview: Incorporating performance data gathered by the Garmin Catalyst™ sensors, its proprietary software is able to section the track into segments, as an example, eleven (11) segments at Laguna Seca Raceway. It then picks the driver’s best actual segments, across all sessions run, with the Garmin Catalyst™ seamlessly linking them together building the TRUE OPTIMAL LAP time and providing confirming video. As Jay Dee Krull, a 31-year Garmin engineer, and motorsports enthusiast mentions in the YouTube video below, “If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a video is worth 10,000 words.” He does a great job demystifying Garmin Catalyst™ functions offering up numerous invaluable pointers for the potential as well as actual Garmin Catalyst™ user. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ2jV0FhINg&t=8s Better yet, the driver can compare video of the TRUE OPTIMAL LAP calculated by the Garmin Catalyst™ to video of their best lap in any of their saved sessions. Consider, a driver may have just turned a personal best of a 1:44 at Willow Springs, in contrast, the calculated TRUE OPTIMAL LAP time could be a 1:42, based on the best 52
segments actually driven at this event, going back up to four (4) days. This process lets driver know, that a 1:42 is there. All they need to do is integrate the coaching suggestions provided, via audio coaching and analyze and subsequently integrate the post session three (3) OPPORTUNITIES presented by their Garmin Catalyst™. Also note, if the driver were to drive a better line, perhaps as a result of some sort of coaching, and as a result, provide updated driving data to the Garmin Catalyst™, the TRUE OPTIMAL LAP will become updated to reflect this. As an example, if a driver habitually early drove an early apex into turn X, and subsequently updated their approach to the proper late apex. The software would take this into consideration as it performs its TRUE OPTIMAL LAP calculations. In Part 2 of this article, I will closely examine all the features and benefits of the Garmin Catalyst™ calculated opportunities looking at: • OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEWS, 1, 2 AND 3, • BRAKING OPPORTUNITIES, • APEX IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES, • SPEED OPPORTUNITIES. Lastly who is using the Garmin Catalyst? One good way to find out, is to go to Facebook, and then to the Garmin Catalyst™ Users Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/647165782874898 Frank Schwartz posts, “4 of (his) 2020 five (5) track records came after the purchase of the Garmin.” He adds, “in an abbreviated racing year. How many did I set in 2019 total? 2!” Elton Horn writes, “PB of 1:45.79 at Laguna Seca on my second session last weekend. Previous best was 1:47.9.” Peter Zaballos writes, “…took my personal best lap time down another notch. This is one of their most popular topics since the Rennlist Forum came online over 15 years ago. Seen on a vendor’s website, quoting one of their customers, “I put this on my GT-1 Corvette to race in the SCCA American Road Racing Championships at Road Atlanta. Also put 2 more in my kids GT-1 Corvette and Mustang. These are custom tube frame-built race cars. 850hp, top speed 185mph. We compared data all weekend. A whole lot more practical than a XXXXX system selling for $25k each!!! Great system!!” Speed Secret’s Ross Bentley writes, “To me, the three best things about the Garmin Catalyst™ are the real-time coaching cues, the optimal lap video, and the opportunities it identifies.” Dan Aspesi, former POC Driver of the Year, multiple PCA & POC Racing Class record holder says, that the Garmin Catalyst™ is the best tool he has ever seen for driver development. He is so impressed he recently became a Garmin dealer. Guy Ober, Master Technician at SGS Motorsports, in San Luis Obispo, started his wrenching career for Dick Barbour Racing in San Diego, and has been driving in DE and TT competitions for many years. With his Garmin Catalyst™ he has achieved multiple personal best times at several tracks in CA.
