Ahhh, Parhump in the spring...or rather “At the Spring.” Spring Mountain was huge. Nearly 130 cars, 40 in each of the Red and Orange race groups and a full field in Time Trial and PDS. This was a double points event and, aside from a few minor glitches, the weekend turned out great.
Production Manager
In this issue both Andrew Weyman and Eric Walsh cover the event in it’s entirety. Luis Vivar’s photos capture fierce rivalries on the track and great fellowship in the pits. Also, be sure to read Don Kravig’s article where he talks about some of the great drivers who have been a part of the POC history. And don’t miss Dennis Wolfe’s informative Tenth Chasers, Volume 9. Our May event at Willow Springs will be the long-awaited 4-hour enduro–Tribute to LeMans. Hope to see you all there!

Anyone who’s driven at the racetrack long enough knows that the purchase price of the race car is quickly dwarfed by the running costs of the car. The amount of time spent on the track is almost insignificant compared to the time it takes to prep a Spec Boxter, Porsche 911 Cup car or a Cayman Clubsport. In looking around the paddock at a POC event there’s no doubt that countless hours were spent getting all these race cars, trucks and trailers, and supporting equipment ready for the weekend. Yet, despite all the complexity, I think we can break down preparation into three simple steps: 1) Try your best to research all conditions. 2) Pack everything you think you’ll need. and 3) Improvise when things don’t go exactly as planned. During this past event at Spring Mountain for many of us the first curveball came in the form of Friday afternoon traffic on the 15 freeway. It took me almost 8 hours to get from Orange County to the racetrack thanks to those terrible traffic jams along the way. Getting to the track late meant setting up late which meant getting to bed late. Everyone is different but for some of us minimal sleep can make the difference between a good and a bad day on the racetrack. The weather Saturday was cool and a bit windy...just a bit! Maybe this was a reward for those of us who agonized in traffic the day before. The day got off to a quick start and it seemed like any issues from Friday were quickly forgotten. It’s amazing what a bit of RPM and speed can do for a tired soul! After a few sessions it became apparent that the weather wasn’t the only reward for the weekend. By the end of day on Saturday we saw 5 records fall (Carrera Spec, GT2, Modified 2, Prototype, and Stock 5)! 6

That’s not to say that Saturday was without a few hiccups. In the morning the track ran out of racing fuel so many of us scrambled to find another reliable source. Later in the afternoon there was some disruption during the first Orange race, The race was black-flagged and ended early. Racers were called together to discuss what had happened and to ensure that these unnecessary incidents wouldn’t happen again. For a few drivers things had not gone exactly as planned. If there were any grudges, they all seemed to be ironed out by that evening at the amazing banquet. It’s interesting that beer and good food can do wonders for that sort of thing. Sunday was a bit windier but still an amazing day to be at the track. By the end of the day we saw three more records fall (GT5, Modified 7, and Stock 3) and we got to witness some awesome action in the Orange and Red race groups. Cars in the Orange race were neck and neck in Boxster spec and wound up in a photo finish. In Red it was the same–hot competition especially with the front-runners! Another successful weekend at Spring Mountain! Even with the Friday traffic and the wind this track never disappoints. The facility and staff were as amazing as ever and the event went smoothly. I’m sure I’m not the only one who can’t wait to return to Pahrump in October. But until then lets begin prepping for the Tribute to LeMans! See you at WSIR in a few weeks!

“To the victor belong the spoils” This proverb originated in the United States and was first used in 1832 by Senator William Learned Marcy* of New York. In a war or other contest, the winner gets the booty. The booty, in this case, is our coveted John Deere Annual Weed Harvesting Award and this year’s recipient is non-other than Brian Van Noy!
*Interestingly, our own Will Marcy received the JohnVivar Deere Award at the POC Banquet in 2014. hoto: Luis

Double Points Palooza The Spring Mountain Double Points Palooza was yet another shining example of what the POC does best. Competition on the Mansell C course was intense. There were great races at the front of the pack, the mid-pack and the back of the pack. Saturday’s Red race results were as close as they come. Alexandra Hainer out paced Mike Monsalve and Eric Olberz in GT2 to own the podium. Kevin Roush blazed to the finish line in GT3, while Duane Selby (in his newly refreshed livery) and Eben Benade faced off in an epic battle for 2nd and 3rd in class. Ana Predescu led GT4, followed closely by Brad Keegan with Jim Salzer clutching 3rd. Rich Yochum, Nathan Johnson and John Cahalin had to retire with a DNF. The Carrera Spec air cooled beasts led Orange Race #1 with Paul Barnes, Robert Thacker and Douglas Volder on the podium. Boxster Spec driver Scott Craig nailed 1st place with Anders Hainer and Brian Van Noy hot on his bumper. Branimir Kovac gained five positions only to be out shined by Clay Medley who shot up by nine. Don Matz skillfully achieved podium status in GT5 and Paul Young nailed it in GT7. Orange Race #2 was a repeat performance in Carrera Spec with Barnes, Thacker and Volder owning the podium. James McLoughlin, Anders Hainer and Scott Craig placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Boxster Spec. Clay Medley once again dazzled the crowd by gaining ten places this time. Larry Haas impressed by charging forward by nine. Sunday’s Red race was led by John Cahalin in Prototype with a fastest lap of 2:17:946. GT2 sorted out with Bob Mueller taking 1st followed by Mike Monsalve and Alexandra Hainer. Steve Parker nailed GT1. Eben Benade, Duane Selby and 14
By Andrew Weyman
Tom Stevens earned kudos for their performances in GT3. Ana Predescu, once again, ruled GT4 followed by Brad Keegan and Jan Sussman. Orange Race #3 was another clash of the Titans in Carrera Spec. Paul Barnes took home 1st with Kip Waterhouse gaining two places to finish 2nd, followed by Robert Thacker. Anders Hainer led Boxster Spec, closely followed by Scott Craig and James McLoughlin in a “spec”-tacular finish. It should be noted that Justin Daily had a great showing all weekend long, hot on the bumpers of all the podium finishers in BSR. Larry Haas took GT5 followed by Scott Matz, both of whom gained seven places during the race. Paul Young, once again, earned 1st in GT7. Time Trial and Performance Driving Series drivers negotiated the course impressively. PDS driver Riley Giocomazzi took home 1st place in Boxster Spec on Saturday. Modified 1 was won by Terry Van Noy, Modified 3 by Kyle Kerekffy, Modified 4 by Katie Shortill, Stock 3 by Steve Nguyen, Stock 4 by Daniel Ross, Stock 5 by Pirouz Salehi, and Stock 6 by Mel Zwyer. Time Trial results for Boxster Spec were Mickey Giocomazzi in 1st, Terry Davis in 2nd and Allen Watts in 3rd. 1st place finishers were Kevin Yi in GT1, Scott Hatcher in GT3, Bob Gartland in GT4, Eric Oviatt in GT5, Mike Avitt in Modified 2, and Craig Booth in Modified 3. Time Trialers Terry Davis in Boxster Spec and Ira Ramin in GT4 had a great time pairing up and exchanging places in almost every corner.
Sunday’s PDS group was no less competitive. 1st place drivers were Terry Van Noy in Modified 1, David Allen in Modified 3, Katie Shortill in Modified 4, Steve Nguyen in Stock 3, Daniel Ross in Stock 4 and Pirouz Salehi in Stock 5.
Photos: Luis Vivar
In Time Trials, Terry Davis took home 1st in Boxster Spec with a fastest lap of 2:46.597. Blaine Krasky took 1st in GT1, Scott Hatcher was 1st in GT3, Bob Gartland finished 1st in GT4, Eric Walsh won GT5, Mike Avitt took 1st in Modified 2, Craig Booth was 1st in Modified 3 and Vivek Hazari finished 1st in Modified 4. The weekend came to a close with lots of enthusiastic conversation about returning to Spring Mountain in October. If that event is anything like the one we just had, it’ll be another palooza.

Johans Lamic, the artist uses original Porsche parts and colors only, so each Whale Tail comes with its own 40-50-year-old road trip-memories. POC History In The Rearview Mirror By Don Kravig, Precision Motion
George Follmer
Scooter Patrick
James Dean

When the POC Archives landed in my shop a few weeks ago, they immediately took me back to the late 60s and 70s when my father was an avid POC competitor. I vividly remember as an impressionable 11 yr old sitting next to Scooter Patrick, (a Porsche 904, 906, 908 Racer, very famous in his day), at the old Sand Sailor restaurant in Lancaster, which was POC Racing HQ at the time. The POC has always had a mixture of top rank professionals, gifted amateurs and others on their way up. From its very earliest days, racing competition has been “the thing”. A cursory glance through the old membership records brings up such professionals as CanAm and multiple TransAm Champion George Follmer (POC member #703) who made it to Formula 1 at the age of 39; 3 time Le Mans Winner, Klaus Ludwig; long time team owner Vasek Polak (#894), and so many others. James Dean was even a member briefly and purchased his Porsche at Vasek Polak, and I believe one of our early members Michael Hammond was the salesman. Even today, as you walk around the pits you can rub elbows with dozens of pros and ex pros such as Anders Hainer, Dwain Dement, Loren Beggs, Nico Silva and so many others. All you have to do is google these gentlemen to see their records. The fact that they are hanging out with us speaks volumes about this organization.
IROC
During a period in the late 70s, over a dozen POC racers made the jump into the pro ranks, including Margie Haas, Bobby Barnes, Rick Borlase, Michael Hammond, Tom Marks, Mark Rothman and many others. Margie Haas was the first POC female to compete professionally at Daytona, Sebring and LeMans. Dennis Aase (who co-drove his 908 with Scooter Patrick at the Watkins Glen 6 hour CanAM in 1974) is another one of our early members who competed in CanAm, IMSA, TransAm and raced LeMans. He also holds a world speed record at Bonneville. He finished his professional career driving a prototype for Dan Gurney, and retired after a spectacular crash at Riverside Raceway. He still comes to some of our events and is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Over upcoming issues I will introduce you to some of these drivers past and present, and eventually will compile a list of the pros and their various achievements, as well as the top ranked amateurs who were able to step in and out of the pros at will. POC is a treasure trove of racing history and memorabilia, and the current racing is pure evidence of that history. I will close with a quote from our current Chief Driving Instructor, Dwain Dement: “Steer it with the GO pedal”. See ya out there on the track!

Tenth The Chasers Mental Game Vol.9/
Dennis Wolfe When they say “it’s all in your head”, they mean it. And they’re right… If you think about it, EVERYTHING is “in your head”, because that’s how you process the world around you. There are many, many ways you can invest in making your car go faster, but by far the best investment you can make is working on your mental game. Indeed, the most important piece of equipment at the track is the one between your ears. So what are we talking about, exactly… If you talk to elite athletes, they will all tell you that they have mental routines that get them in the zone for competition, just like you would stretch out before going for a run. And these routines run the gamut, but here are some basic words of wisdom to help you optimize your mental performance. Get PLENTY of sleep the night before, and limit (or preferably, eliminate) any alcohol consumption. If your alarm goes off at 5am for a track day, you should be in bed by 9pm at the latest. I cannot stress this enough. If you’re tired, groggy, or a little hungover, you will NOT perform well at speed. Eat a good, healthy breakfast focused on high protein foods (think eggs, bacon, smoothies). Bread, muffins, pastries and donuts will all slow you down. At least 20 minutes before you head to grid, stop chatting with people and start getting yourself together: Turn on your car so it warms up to temperature, and run the A/C if you have it to cool off the interior on a hot day. Check your tire pressures / Check your seating position / Put on your gloves & shoes Check all of your car’s settings (PSM, PASM, Drive mode, spoiler, etc) Once in the car and headed to grid, turn off the stereo. Turn off your cell phone. There should be no audio distractions in the car. You don’t want a call to come in while you’re carving up a slalom. Visualize the track. Try to see each element, and how you will be setting up for it. You should do this between each lap at autocross. Find a mantra that works for you and repeat it several times mentally before you head out. Here are some suggestions: “Clean. Smooth. Aggressive.” / “Someone has to win, it might as well be me.” “Look up and out. Up and out.” / “Brake late, gas early.” Get both hands on the wheel at 9 and 3, wait for the starter to wave you on, and GO GO GO!!!! These are but a few of the many ways you can build a pre-track routine, which combines both mental and physical activities. The main objective here is focus. Keep your mind on the task at hand and watch those tenths fall away.
