Note from the Editor: This month the POC traveled to San Pedro where members wore out a-buncha-rubber during our well-attended Autocross event. Covering the action was Dennis Wolfe who submits his first article in a series entitled Tenth Chasers. In support of Dennis’ article, professional photographer Luis Vivar provides us with some great images of the event. As COVID continues, our usual August weekend at Monterey was cancelled. But Martin Schacht, however, provides us with a retrospective on one of our favorite tracks, Laguna Seca.

ck, Baby! By: Dennis Wolfe
After what seemed like an eternity, POC Autocross finally resumed racing on August 9 in San Pedro. With strict covid-compliant protocols in place, the POC AX team managed to deliver a safe and exciting event that was completely sold out. The weather was perfect, the course was challenging, and everyone was just thrilled to be back on track. Many people deserve credit for re-launching the championship series, but none more than our AX co-Chairs Michael Oest and Don Chapman, with ongoing support from POC President Ron Palmer. If you see these guys around at an upcoming event, please do be sure to thank them… from a nice, safe distance. Hot-shot drivers Steve O’Blenes, Scott Mullens, James Yom and our very own co-Chair Michael Oest all turned in sub-35 second times, which is just insane. These guys were on fire. Be sure to check out poclive.com for complete timed results and season standings. Our next event will also be at San Pedro on Sept 13 so sign up now! Are you a regular participant in POC events? Does going to the track add value to your life? If so, consider giving back to the club that gives you so much by volunteering your time. Everything we do is done by volunteers, and these incredibly complicated motorsport events do not just happen by themselves. If you are interested in getting involved with autocross, please reach out to Michael Oest (michaeloest@hotmail.com) or Brian Cooner (bcooner@gmail.com). Or just say hi at the next event and we’ll find a way to get you involved. 5
There Are No Cones! Tenth Chasers Vol.1 By: Dennis Wolfe
Hi everyone! Welcome to the first article in a series called Tenth Chasers, named for the folks that are constantly chasing tenths off of their lap times. While this column will be primarily focused on autocross and some of its unique dynamics, many of the things we will discuss can also be applied to a broader array of motorsport events. First let me tell you just a little about myself… I’ve been driving Porsches for over 30 years, and have been driving competitively via PCA/POC events (mostly autocross) for over a decade. I completed PCA’s national instructor certification in 2018, and in 2019 joined the Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles as an instructor. The training there is second to none, and you get LOTS of seat time. No substitute for seat time. I am regularly at or near the top overall times at autocross events, despite driving a bone-stock 718 Cayman S on Cup 2’s. So I’ve picked up a few things along the way, and for those who’d like to take their driving to the next level, I hope that I can share those with you and make you faster. Enough about me...

The first lesson might as well be from The Karate Kid, which is to say, it’s very Zen, and is hard to understand at first. Maybe even a little cryptic. “Hey - you’re just making me paint the fence and wax the floor!” But no. There’s wisdom in the practice. Despite the fact that the entirety of an autocross course is laid out with cones, you must approach the course as if THERE ARE NO CONES. That’s right. There are no cones on an autocross course. Just turns. Late apex turns. People often get so focused on driving AT cones that they forget to set up the car properly to drive AROUND cones. The cone is merely a small indicator of where you CAN’T go, and all the empty pavement surrounding it is where you can. So you have to start picturing what the course would look like WITHOUT cones, and the line you would drive if it were just pavement and shoulders like a normal road course. Once you start to do that, you’ll find yourself going much wider and apexing much later on each cone, and then you’ll find to your delight the tenths start falling away. More often than not, you have to treat cones as the exit of a turn, not the entrance. And that will be the topic for our next edition: BackSiding. Happy racing! - Dennis Got questions? Laguna Seca 30 Years Past, the Present and its Future? Martin Schacht
Laguna Seca is one of the most sought after tracks to drive in the West, maybe anywhere. Why? Its landscape of rolling hills is calming and easy on the eyes, regardless of season, even in the dry summer months, the track is historic and well maintained, and the surrounding area, neatly manicured. In addition, camping outside the track is available, with showers too.
24
Laguna Seca, was initially designed and constructed in 1957 with nine (9) turns, replacing the other historic Monterey County racing venue, 1950’s Pebble Beach. It was deemed as too dangerous by many. By the 1990s when I first got there, the Track had grown from the original nine (9) turn 1.9 mile track, to present day 2.238 miles long, and now with eleven (11) turns. As most will agree, the “Corkscrew”, turns 8 and 8A are jaw-tightening memorable, with that unique elevation drop. It features the famous, some say infamous, Corkscrew Turn, but don’t let its splendor beguile you. It is also a very technical drive, with serious consequences for an off-track excursion in numerous potentially hazardous spots. It can bite you, and therein lies its charm, exquisite, yet precarious all in one. As we all know, this set of circumstances in not unique to Laguna Seca, it mimics life. There is some irony in here, somewhere. Looking around the tarmac area, in the 1990’s, one of the biggest contrasts between those early times, and the present, we now see numerous Peterbilt tractors pulling multi-car stacker trailer rigs, complete with luxurious guest quarters behind the cab. They hadn’t yet been invented back then. In the 90’s, you’d would have seen very few trailers, with only the heavily modified cars being trailered to the POC events, and there weren’t very many of these. Enclosed trailers were rare and motorhomes non-existent, as I recall. Most of us drove our cars to track events, carried a few tools, and prayed that the tires would hold up for the drive up and back, and especially the track weekend. Rain was also an anathema we all wished to avoid, driving well-worn tires on the trip back home to SoCal. In the 90’s, Porsche Owners Club (POC) ran Laguna Seca on Thanksgiving weekend. Many of us would stuff ourselves with turkey on Thursday, then off to the track on Friday, for the weekend. And because it was held in November, most generally you could count on at least one partial, and sometimes a completely rainy day. Cloudy? Count on it. At that time, shelter from the rain was non-existent. I can’t recall where we went to get out of the elements, did we go back to our rooms, did we hit the pubs in Monterey? The POC Rules, aka the GCRs, were completely different than today. In these early 90’s Laguna Seca events, we only had Time Trial, racing didn’t arrive until about 1994. Bolt on aero devices such as monster wings had not yet arrived. No dive planes, no side skirts, and wheels widths were somewhat restrained. Lacking aero and mono-purpose sticky tires, lap times were not what they are today. Fuel at the track? Not that I can recall. Some of us looking for an advantage would go over to Monterey Airport and purchase high-octane aviation gasoline to mix with our high-octane gas. We didn’t understand that AV gas is designed specifically for 25
conditions unique to aircraft performing at altitude. The AV gas probably didn’t help, may have actually hindered, but we didn’t know that, we were always looking for that edge, still the same today. Drivers at a POC Laguna Seca Thanksgiving weekend event will never forget our inimitable Event Master, Neal Rouzier. Neal would herd all the drivers to the pit wall near the start-finish line, for Saturday’s AM Driver’s Meeting. Rule #1, don’t be late, or ever miss the Driver’s Meeting. You didn’t want to be on Neal’s “short list”. He let us know that there would be no nonsense tolerated on the track. Mind your manners! Neal had conjured up a Drill Sargent façade, and we bought into it, and minded our manners. In real life, Neal is a “peach” as is his wife Carolyn. They campaigned a mid-80s wide body Carrera for years, as we all watched it evolve from a tasty ride, to a veteran track car. Neal and Carolyn shared that car at the track. Back in the day, I don’t recall the politics or favoritism involved with securing a track rental at Laguna Seca. The Thanksgiving weekend could not have been in that great a demand, so the POC gladly took it. Time moved on and POC had the opportunity to run a weekend in August, with the stipulation that we raise money for charity, which we did, primarily Make a Wish Foundation. Subsequently, the charity stipulation was dropped, but we were still able to keep our August date until fairly recently. Regardless of POC having been a steady customer for many, many years, our traditional August date was taken away from us. True, we had raised well over $100,000 for charity, that was quickly forgotten. Laguna Seca track management, aka SCRAMP, for whatever reason, simply gave our date to another organization. There is a story here; things like this don’t happen without a reason. Ever since we lost our traditional August weekend, POC has struggled to get dates locked in. Our Club would be promised a weekend, that may or may not materialize, and at the same time, track rental rates were going up as were sound restrictions… more on that later. As a result of the exorbitant rental costs, POC would have to sell off a few run groups to another Club to finance the weekend. It became tougher to fill an event with POC cars, as many of the higher performance cars, could not make the 92 dB sound limit. There were, and still are a few 105 dB weekends over the course of a year, but they are rare and very pricy. The COVID-19 Pandemic has served to make securing the Track, even more complicated: POC had agreed to share Speed Ventures weekend 2020, this past summer,
26
but the track’s last minute, incredibly detailed, COVID restrictions made it impossible for POC to participate. This was to have been a 105 dB race weekend, no Time Trial….but literally at the last minute, the Track specified that no support rigs were to be allowed on the tarmac, and no workers could be present to support the cars, change tires, etc. POC had no choice but to cancel. I attended with Speed Ventures in their Time Trial group, and saw numerous rigs on the tarmac, and workers, was POC duped? The COVID restrictions do take the “R” out of Romance, but they are necessary. Going back to late 2019, non-profit SCRAMP was replaced by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors with International Speedway Company, ISC, owned by NASCAR. The County Board of Supervisors had their reasons, declining track revenue may have been one of them. 2020 has been a horrible year for ISC at Laguna Seca, and elsewhere, as a result of the impact of COVID-19, with cancellations galore across the United States. Unbelievably, one of the larger events in Motorsports, the Monterey Historic Weekend was cancelled. Private track clubs been having events at Laguna Seca since about June, with strict social distancing rules in effect. Masks on at all times except when driving. But for the sake of projection, let’s assume that all COVID restriction are lifted, we are back to normal. Regardless, some say that the future of Laguna Seca may be bleak. Let’s hope not. One feature making the Track less attractive to participants and organizers alike, are the present day stringent sound restrictions, which may possibly have evolved as a result of pressure by nearby residents. What we may be seeing is the NIMBY process in action, Not In My Back Yard. These neighborhoods have mushroomed to the west and south of the track. As mentioned earlier, Laguna Seca was built in 1957, on land donated to Monterey County by the US Army. Prior to this time, There was little to no demand to build a home next to an active Army base. But, with the Army out of the picture, the land nearby to the Laguna Seca Complex, was a magnet for developers, and develop it they did. What follows is purely my speculation. But it seems to me, those who built or bought homes in the area, knew full well there was a racetrack nearby, but choose to ignore it. Did these residents and developers put pressure on the County Supervisors to force Laguna Seca to initiate draconian sound limits? For whatever the cause, we now see 90 dB and 92 dB sound limited days and occasionally, 105 dB days. 27
Track management took the opportunity to increase revenue, staging the rental fees according to the dBs allowed. Presently, a renter can pay $15,000 a day to rent the track, on a 92 dB weekday, that’s one (1) day. This does not include the cost for corner workers and emergency crews. Looking back a few years to 2016, that same cost was $7,200 a day. Just imagine what a 92 dB or 105 dB weekend costs? As a result of the sound restrictions, most dedicated race car owners, will only be interested in the very limited 105 dB weekends. The rental cost for a 105 dB weekend will be significantly more than the amounts mentioned above. As a result entry fees must go up to cover the cost. A race car can run the 92 dB days if it is severely muffled up to make sound. The cost of this modification is substantial, and subsequently performance is lost. True everybody “is in the same boat”, but most drivers want the maximum performance available. After all, they paid for it when the car was built. Now they need to spend more money to quiet it down. This option is not that appealing. What happens if you fail the sound limit restriction? You’ll get a Black Flag, and be signaled off the track, your session is over. Do it in the following session, you may be done for the day. The penalties to a sound violation seem to be increasingly severe. In 2020, the former policy of requesting a sound check is no longer offered. The clear message to attendees, don’t blow sound or you’re gone. Later model normally aspirated Porsche cars, such as 997 and 991 models, 997 and 991 GT3 cars, equipped with Porsche Sport Exhaust, Cayman S, GTS and GT4, and Boxster S with Sport Exhaust, have the option to install an aftermarket “Track Nanny” device. This GPS driven unit shuts certain interior muffler baffles before the car passes the Laguna Seca Sound Station, and activates them once safely past. It is programmed with the specific location of the station. This modification to the Porsche Sport Exhaust will cost about $800, hardware and installation, and comes pre-programmed for Laguna Seca. It can be programmed for any track, anywhere as long as you know the GPS coordinates of the Sound Shack. And for owners of the above cited later model Porsche cars with Factory Sport Exhaust, compatible with the “Track Nanny”, do not hesitate. I have one and it works flawlessly. No more need to lift at Turn 5, putt up the hill past the Sound Shack, and drop the hammer just before Turn 6. Just keep your foot to the floor and the Track Nanny will cover for you. Loss of performance is imperceptible. And as a bonus, you’ll carve off an incremental second or two off your lap times. Will Laguna Seca survive as a racing venue? Good question. We can’t be certain. But know that an environmentally sensitive County Board of Supervisors could shut 28
Laguna Seca down. Possible next stage, open the former Laguna Seca grounds up for real estate development. Too cynical? It’s happened before, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this were to happen in the near future. Who ever thought Ontario Motor Speedway would die with a mere 10 year lifespan, 1970 to 1980. Riverside Raceway was the next to perish, 1957 to 1989. No tracks including Laguna Seca are immortal. So the message is clear, if you have an opportunity to drive Laguna Seca, do it ASAP. Don’t dither! It could be gone with the stroke of a pen, a sequence of key strokes.
