Chuckwalla Nigel Maidment “5…4…3…2…1…GO! 200, left 5 plus, very short into right 3, 100; right 4 plus, 300; left 4 plus long, 50; left 4 opens, slippy, keep it tidy, don’t cut, stay in on exit, you got it, you got it, stay in it!” That’s what I’m halfexpecting as I navigate the first 5 corners at Chuckwalla during practice, but instead, it’s radio silence. A quick glance to my right confirms it – it’s just me, I’m all alone in here, no co-driver today. Anyone who was patient enough to listen to my rambling response to their perfectly innocent question this weekend: “where’ve you been since Sonoma?” will know I’ve been indulging my ‘petrol head’ self by engaging in a new pursuit - stage rally. Some of you may be aware that a small group of POC racers led by the intrepid “Go, Go, Go, no brake, don’t make me hurt you,” Vali Predescu, have been making the trek north to Dirtfish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington over the past couple of years to hone our car control skills on the loose stuff. (To be honest, for me this was essential given my all too frequent excursions from the blacktop during our POC events). After a recent trip there this summer I decided it was time to take the plunge and realize another one of my boyhood dreams before it was too late; find a rally car to rent (rear wheel drive of course, because 4WD is for sissies), a service crew, a co-driver mad enough to jump in beside me, and enter my first rally. A couple of weeks later I was on a flight back East heading for the American Rally Association’s New England Forest Rally; over 80 cars taking off at 1-minute intervals covering 140 timed stage miles and 300 transit miles over 2 days, preceded by a day of reconnaissance to create pace notes, leaving little time for sleep. How was it? How long have you got? In short, it was awesome! (And that’s an ‘awesome’ from a normally restrained, Brit’s perspective). The old racing adage: “to finish first, first you have to finish” is especially applicable in rally, and of this rally in particular, known for destroying cars with its huge rocks (they paint them orange to help you avoid them!) and massive jumps. Well, my co-driver was brilliant, coaching me through the whole weekend, the car held together and we finished on the podium in our class; champagne spraying, trophy, medals the works. Oh yeah,

and did I mention we beat Travis Pastrana, passing him on the penultimate stage? (OK, so his car was upside down in the middle of the road and we were about an hour behind, but to finish first…). Needless to say I was hooked and have competed in two more rallies since; in the rain-soaked muddy logging roads of the Ojibwe Forest in Minnesota (may as well have been on sheet ice for the level of grip available at times), and among the glorious Fall foliage of the Michigan Upper Peninsula (several branches of which came in through the co-driver’s window on more than one occasion). So, is it time to build a Porsche rally car? Vali already has, watch this space. So, it was with some trepidation that I set off for Chuckwalla on Thursday, one of my favorite events on the POC calendar, fearing that maybe road racing would no-longer provide the buzz I craved, now that I’d found a new outlet for my passion for racing. I needn’t have worried. What a glorious weekend it was, not just for the racing, which was epic, but for the quality time catching up with my POC buddies off track as well. (On track was to prove a little more difficult)! I was looking forward to spending the nights in the paddock, under the stars, for the first time at this beautiful desert venue. The convenient little cabins at the track had booked up early, so I was going to be renting an RV trailer with my one time adversary (“he hit me, he hit me”) turned best pal - Branimir “cup-cake” Kovac. (Apparently, only his liberal friends are supposed to know about that particular nickname, but hey, we’re all pals at POC, regardless of political persuasion, right)? As it happens, I arrived a little later than planned, delayed by a wideload truck over the Chiriaco summit. You see, Vali had warned us weeks ago of an impending world-wide shortage of the Toyo contingency tires we use in the Spec Boxster class, offering us the chance to participate in a bulk purchase to cover us for the next several events. Many of us took him up on the offer, but Branimir, being of Eastern European origin himself, smelled a rat, accusing Vali of “engaging in another of his Romanian scams.” Later realizing the veracity of Vali’s assessment, Branimir had to act quickly, and apparently entered into a bulk order of his own through one of his Croatian ‘business contacts’; a deal he was particularly proud of since it included delivery to the track. When pressed later, he was forced to concede that pricing of tires “buy the pound” should have been a clue that something was not quite as it seemed. Awoken by Branimir’s alarm at 4am(!), Friday morning’s open practice day came around sooner than anticipated and it was time for me to get back into the groove of circuit driving again. I struggled to match my previous personal best times from years past despite the recent track resurface. This wasn’t altogether unexpected after several months out of the car; I had to get used to driving at the limit of 12

adhesion again. On track, precision and consistency corner after corner, lap after lap is the name of the game. Rally is more about driving 7-8 tenths rather than 9-10 tenths to allow yourself a margin for adjusting to ever-changing conditions. Every corner is different and experienced at race speed only once (sometimes twice if the stage is repeated). The surface is constantly changing so the grip level changes; grip on entry may be good but can deteriorate dramatically mid-corner or on exit, sending you off helplessly in the direction of imposing trees or sheer drop-offs. One must constantly expect the unexpected and adapt on the fly. As I said, I was struggling, but fortunately help was at hand, as it always is at POC events. There’s inevitably someone more experienced, or simply faster, willing to offer help and guidance. In my case I was super fortunate in that pro instructor, Connor Bloum, was there (thanks Branimir, I owe you!) to jump in my car and turn a few laps to collect comparison video and data. My goodness, that young man can drive. I’m not going to embarrass myself by telling you how much faster he was than me but once we made his recommended adjustments to set-up, and I took his pointers onboard, he instantly had me taking a full 2 seconds off my lap times, ready to face Saturday’s races with a little more selfconfidence. Later in the day I witnessed our venerable resident coach, Kevin Roush, holding court in the Vali camp offering some of the same advice I’d received from Connor for many of the corners at this track – begin to point the car into the corner before you initiate braking; there’s always something more to learn. I enjoy coming to this event in particular because, as the penultimate meeting on the calendar, it’s where the various class championships are often decided, especially since it was made a double-points event. I did a bit of homework ahead of the weekend to identify some of the key battles. In the Red Group the fight for the GT4 title caught my attention; 65 points separated first from third places, and there were 80 points up for grabs this weekend. At the top was seasoned campaigner, Brad Keegan; second, 49 points behind, was not-so-seasoned Ana Predescu (also a budding rally driver), followed closely by another veteran racer, Jim Brad Kegan Salzer. So my question to Ana, whose progress I have followed closely in recent years as she increasingly became a force to be reckoned with in the Spec Boxster class, before joining the power-hungry ranks of GT4, was: “Do you think you can pull it off and win the championship.” Her answer surprised me, especially coming from an engineer: “I haven’t really done the math, 14

I’m just gonna have fun at this point.” Well, she nailed qualifying, setting a new track record to put herself on pole a full 2 seconds ahead of P2. She then went out and led the race from start to finish, coming home 17 seconds ahead of her nearest class rival, Jim Salzer, who was closely followed by Brad Keegan. Just having fun, yeah right! While partaking of a few excellent cocktails in the ValiMotorsports camp Saturday night (thank you, as always, Alex) I was joined by Ana who sat down beside me and promptly asked me a rather odd question: “Does your butt get sore?” Now, this caught me a little by surprise, so rather than second-guess, I asked her to elaborate. She was referring, apparently, to getting a tender derriere from sitting in her race car seat all day, explaining that it had no padding (the seat that is, I cautiously assumed, but thought it best not to seek clarification). Realizing that I was talking to an engineer, I hesitated before offering the obvious advice – “um, have you considered adding some padding”? Her response - “Don’t be silly, I can’t do that; it would raise my center of gravity.” Just having fun, huh, Ana? Maybe she added that padding for Sunday qualifying because this time her lead over Brad Keegan was just 67 thousanths of a second. Game on! Well, she got off to a flyer and never looked back. The gap to Brad seemed to remain constant lap after lap at just a few car-lengths and any plan Brad may have had to hold back and pounce on the final lap was dashed by a puncture. Fortunately, he was able to limp home to take second place and keep his championship hopes very much alive, Jim Salzer having struggled with vibration and steering issues and suffering an off early in the race. As a result of all this, the gap between Brad and Ana has narrowed to 23 points. The margin reduces to just 8 points when the requirement for 3 race drops is taken into account. With 40 points on the table at the Willow Springs finale in December, this one is coming down to the wire. Best leave that padding out, Ana! The GT3 championship battle looked pretty close heading into this weekend between Eben Benade and Duane Selby, but unfortunately Duane had to sit this one out due to problems sourcing parts for his car. True to form, Duane was nevertheless in attendance lending a helping hand at the dyno and at the scales to keep things running smoothly. Thanks Duane! Eben notched up a third place finish on Saturday behind Kevin Roush and Steve Town and was second in Sunday’s race behind winner Steve Town, thereby, it would seem, comfortably securing the championship. Mike Monsalve started Saturday with a very comfortable, if not unassailable 89 point lead over Bob Mueller in the GT2 class, closely followed by another of our rising young stars, Alex Hainer (another nascent rally enthusiast), with Eric Olberz breathing down her neck for a top 3 trophy. A win for Bob on Saturday, together with a DQ for Mike for being over-powered Photos: Luis Vivar at the Dyno after the race, made things much tighter going into Sunday’s race; Alex and Eric keeping the pressure on with second and third place finishes, respectively. Bob gained another 10-point advantage over his championship rival on Sunday in a thrilling finish to the 20

race that saw him cross the line just 0.2 seconds ahead of Mike, Alex bringing it home in third place. Consequently, Monsalve’s lead in the championship was slashed to 39 points, which is reduced further to 24 points after mandatory drops. With 40 points to be fought for at Willow Springs, this one ain’t over yet. What about the always competitive Spec Boxster class? Coming into the weekend Anders Hainer (yep, he rallies, too - are you sensing a pattern here?) looked to have one hand firmly on the championship trophy, 108 points clear of his nearest rival, the youngest of our rising stars, James McLaughlin. That points differential does James a disservice because he’s been giving Anders a run for his money in many races this season, and this weekend was to be no exception. Adding to the interest was the fact that Scott Craig was only 3 points adrift of James, hungry for the “first of the losers” spot in the championship. James made it clear he meant business putting himself on pole, just 85 thousanths of a second faster than Anders and shattering Anders’ previous track record. This was going to be a race to watch and I was hoping to get a front row seat. As it happened, I had a 3rd row seat(!) but moved quickly up to 4th behind Matt Hollander when Joe Wiederholt mis-shifted at the start, so I witnessed Anders and James go through turns 1 and 2 side-by-side. James came out in front and that’s where he stayed for the remainder of the race, not that I saw much of him, Anders or Matt after the first lap. After losing ground from an early mistake on lap 1, I had a ding-dong battle with 22


Branimir and Scott, finishing the race between them. That’s the great thing about BSR, there’s nearly always someone to battle with wherever you are in the field, and this was a reminder of the key element of circuit racing I had been missing during my foray into rallying – tangling wheel-to-wheel. I just wish I had the ‘push to pass’ button I have in the rally car. No, that’s not the rally equivalent of F1’s ERS, but rather a system to alert the driver of a car in front they are being caught and should move over – I’m sure Branimir would have obliged! The second race on Saturday played out similarly, with the added excitement for me of passing Anders on lap 1 as he lost grip exiting turn 10. Alas, my elation was short-lived as I made yet another error on lap 2 and he shot past me in spectacular fashion on the inside of turn 3. Joe Wiederholt took advantage of my surprise (yep, you guessed it, he’s a rallyist, too) and I spent the rest of the race trying to pass him, entirely unsuccessfully, while fending off Scott behind me like a persistent terrier snapping at my heals. This included going side-by-side all the way through turns 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 at one point. Ah, it doesn’t get much better than this! All of this played into James’ hands as he took off to win by a relatively comfortable margin for once over Anders. Sunday found Anders determined to salvage some pride from the weekend, which he did in another close-fought battle, prevailing over James by less than half a second. I was delighted to make it onto the podium, albeit a considerable distance behind these two top guns; Connor, Kevin, I still need your help! The result of all that action leaves Anders with an unassailable 98-point lead over James going into Willow Springs, whose second place finish is similarly secure over Scott, assuming James collects the necessary service points before season’s end (get on it young man). As I mentioned earlier, the track had been resurfaced since we last ran it in this direction and track records fell like dominos as a result, not only in multiple race classes (‘Quarter-Mile’ Charlie Persico, Prototype; Steve Parker, GT1; Mike Monsalve, GT2; Kevin Roush, GT3; Ana Predescu, GT4; James McLaughlin, BSR) but also in Time Trials (Reuben Raveendran, Modified 2; Hnatiuk Keith, Modified 3; Matt Bernath, Modified 4; Byron Allen, Stock 4) and PDS (Rudi Marci, Modified 5). Congratulations, all! And so it was that another spectacularly successful POC weekend came to an end, due in no small part to our esteemed Director of Motorsports, Joe “pork chop” Wiederholt. Because no matter how much we may ask him to bite off, it seems it’s never more than he can chew.

With October off due to lack of venue availability, the autocross crew was back in action in November with a DOUBLE POINTS event at Auto Club Speedway. The Santa Ana’s were blowing strong, but we soldiered on with a wide-open clockwise course that rewarded fast hands and precise line choices. When you’ve got more room to run, it’s easier to choose the WRONG line. Our fastest drivers chose wisely... Speaking of fast drivers, our Fast Five included Steve O’Blenes (57.114 - TTOD), Bob Endicott (58.248), Matthew Sipek (59.689), Tristan Zafra (59.880) and Matt Hollander (59.882 - just two thousandths of a second behind Tristan. Whoa.) Be sure to check out porscheclub.com for complete timed results and season standings. This month’s featured class is M4, where we had a helluva shootout! Travis Brown laid down his best time on his last lap, breaking the oneminute barrier by five thousandths of a second (59.995). The “dueling Caymans” of Storm Hagen (60.289) and Brian Cooner (60.479) landed 2nd and 3rd place, while Toby Peterson’s E90 M3 (62.246) and Chris Richardson’s 718 Boxster S (62.571) were good for 4th and 5th. New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

718 Cayman Porsche has revealed the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The mid-engined race car from Weissach is based on the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS road car which has also just been unveiled.The most significant change is the 4.0 litre sixcylinder boxer engine. This high-revving powerplant has been taken directly from the 911 GT3 Cup race car and develops 500 PS in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport –

GT4 RS Clubsport 75 PS more than the previous GT4 Clubsport model. The standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) fitted to the car now uses all seven forward gears, rather than six. All gears feature shorter ratios than in the previous model. Depending on the track and series-specific regulations, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport can achieve lap times that are over two percent quicker than the previous model. The homologated vehicle is track-ready ex factory and can be used in SRO racing series around the world without further modifications.
