Note from the President: The month of May and the POC always create great memories of our Tribute to LeMans events for me. The 2021 Tribute event was no exception. We had 132 entries register for the weekend. 41 Red Cup Racers, 37 Orange Cup Racers, 32 Time Trial, and 22 PDS entries. We could not have asked for a better turnout. The Tribute Relay race had over 30 driver and car pairings competing. Six cars entered the Unlimited 4-hour race, and all six of them finished the entire 4 hours. While finishing all 4 hours is quite an accomplishment, please join me again in congratulating Les Long, Sloan Urry, and Johannes Van Overbeek for an incredible drive and a Tribute to LeMans win. As is mentioned earlier, I have many memories of the Tribute races over the years. I attended several Tribute races before being a race-licensed driver and volunteered as part of a pit crew. This year’s Tribute set a bit of a milestone for me as it was the 10th time that Don Kravig and I have driven the Unlimited Tribute race together. This month’s Velocity is the first time Don Matz hasn’t created our magazine for as long as I can remember. Don is on an extended vacation and had to pass the baton for a month. I want to thank Paul Newton and Matt Hollander for stepping up and getting most of the logistics of this issue together. Of course, the magazine wouldn’t be complete without the outstanding articles and photographs. Thank you to everyone who contributed this month. June brings a trip to Streets of Willow with a bit of Autocross mixed in and a trip to Utah for our race groups. I hope to see you at the track soon!

Tribute to Le Mans The 2021 DigitalFilm Tree/Porsche Owners Club Tribute to LeMans is a classic example of why the POC is club racing at its best. DigitalFilm Tree’s Ramy Katrib stepped up to sponsor the race for the second time (our 27th Tribute). Ramy loves the what the POC has to offer its membership and so do we. A special shout out to John Momeyer, Joe Wiederholt and the entire Board for a spectacular event. UNLIMITED ACTION The Unlimited race was basically nose to tail for the first hour with the 911 GT3Rs going at it hard. They were within a second of one another three hours into the race. Air Power qualified on pole and Valimotorsports wasn’t going down without a fight. Air Power’s Les Long and Valimotorsports’ Vali Predescu started the race and traded places several times. Predescu led for a while until Long’s determination put Air Power back in the lead. Predescu regained position shortly after when he went side by side with Long and executed a thrilling pass in T2. Long drove hard and smart taking back the lead. They went side by side through almost every corner and shortly after that it was nose to tail again. Saving gas by drafting one another was key for both drivers. Predescu had to move out of Long’s draft in T8 and T9 to gain some grip. The intense glow of LED light bars pierced the dusk as the sun dropped behind the mountains. Mike Monsalve relieved Predescu and hammered the throttle against Johannes Van Overbeek who took the wheel from Long. Well-matched expert 6

driving continued to impress in the dark. Van Overbeek was not very familiar with the circuit and appreciated the reference that the track edge reflectors offered. The two drivers were battling with everything they had. It was Kevin Roush versus Sloan Urry for the final stint and more thrilling nose to tail action. Roush set the best lap time of the race with a blazing 1:18.500. Then, around three and a half hours into the race, he corded his front tires and started to drop back. When Boxsters started to catch him in the turns, he knew it was over. Urry turned lap times that were ten seconds faster than Roush and Urry took a comfortable lead. Roush brought the car home safely and the Air Power team earned 1st Place. Tribute served as excellent practice for Air Power’s upcoming six-hour Enduro (which Long’s team won last year). 3rd Place went to Speed Gallery’s deserving Max Panchuk, Martin Daszkal and Tom Haacker. They made a great showing in their 991.1 Cup, especially since it’s Daszkal’s first year driving a Cup car (his past experience has been behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang) and Panchuk’s first year racing. Haacker performed consistently fast. They formed a rock-solid team with a strong car. A well-deserved special mention goes to Mark Smith, otherwise known as Iron Man Smith, in car #681. Mark, in his Boxster, completed the four-hour
Enduro solo, and finished 4th. It was Mark’s first time with the POC at Willow Springs. Bravo! RELAY RAMIFICATIONS The relay race time penalties were updated this year and they appear to be right on the money. The 1st and 2nd place teams were driving very different cars (BSRs versus GT3s). Team Old Men and Da Kidz (Anders Hainer, Scott Craig, Alexandra Hainer and James McLoughlin) in their Boxsters proved to be worthy opponents for the mighty flat sixes. The senior Hainer did forty-five minutes of the first stint until a fan belt failed. He lost power steering and the car came close to overheating at 246 degrees. He limped home and tucked his car in for the night. Alex piloted McLoughlin’s car next and did fifty-five minutes of driving at an excellent pace, especially after not having been in a Boxster Spec for a couple of years. Scott Craig drove for forty-five minutes in the third stint which meant dusk into dark. For him,

the darker it got, the easier it got. McLoughlin did the last leg, driving for seventy-five minutes, and was killing it. It was difficult to see who had the upper hand until the final car and driver exchanges took place. At that point it became clear that the race would be extremely close. The predicted time difference nearing four hours was five seconds. As the laps wound down, it looked like the GT3 team (Jim Salzer, Eben Benade, Steve Town and Duane Selby) would be within a few ticks as they were gaining six to eight seconds per lap. Unfortunately, Benade ran out of fuel just before the white flag; the car sputtered into the paddock and the race was settled. James McLoughlin rocketed past the finish line as one of Da Kidz and brought the Old Men home. Third Place was awarded to Zoo racing’s Alex Filsinger, Chris MacDuff and Paul Filsinger. These guys drove hard! It was MacDuff’s first Tribute and he drove the middle stint in the dark with stock 1997 Boxster headlights for an hour and twenty minutes. I think an LED lightbar is in his future. It was Paul’s and Alex’s first Tribute race. Paul felt it was a perfect evening and a fun crowd to race with. There’s nothing like getting split by the Rs! CELEBRATE A “you must be present to win” raffle kicked off the closing ceremonies. Paul Barnes’ name was picked first. He wasn’t present. Where’d you have to be that’s more important, Paul? James McLoughlin then won the PEC gift certificate (he was there) and after Don Auten was absent (were

you with Paul?), Martin Daszkal went home with a $1,000 Winding Road gift certificate. Trophies were awarded, champagne sprayed and smiles and laughter were more infectious than COVID. FIRST AND LAST IMPRESSIONS A double-yellow was brought out early in the race when Gunter Enz’s left rear wheel broke loose at 137mph in T8. What did you do to control the car? “I just went along for the ride.” The car went one way and the wheel went another. The team had to call it quits. Ron Palmer ran Tribute for the first time in several years. He had a fun time, even under the yellow. Lights went out in the Budweiser Balcony making T4 a bit more challenging in the dark. It was Duane Selby’s first time racing at night and he found it to be a blast. He’s raced multiple Tributes and though a little disappointed this time out, is looking forward to doing it again. Anders Hainer told me “It was truly a gift to be able to run with the Kidz. I mean, what else can we do at this age, bowling? To be able to team up with my daughter is a dream.” It was James McLoughlin’s first Tribute. He felt great about passing a GT3 in T8 with his Boxster, in the dark. He also had the fastest lap time of his team by .01 seconds. Steve Town found that the drivers were very respectful regarding the radical inequity in horsepower. Closing speeds were dramatically different and drivers performed very professionally. Matt Hollander had a great first stint in his GT5 car that he bought just before the race. It was 250lbs overweight with a stock suspension and he still ran 1:37s. He paid $6,500 for the car. Drew Waterhouse of his We Like to Party team ran a few laps and was thwarted by a mechanical failure forcing an end to his party animal lifestyle. “If you ain’t first, you’re last” said Alex Hainer, quoting a line from Talladega Nights. When does registration open for next year’s Tribute?

Trust and the Wind
Returning to WSIR
We always comment on the wind at WSIR. Always. You’d think it would be old news and unworthy of acknowledgment. But, we do it anyway. And just when you think it’s all been said, there’s a new way to describe it: Windage. Yes, it’s a word. I just learned it: “The air resistance of a moving object.” Everyone on track and off experienced it. We had windage. Big time.
our cars to give us more grip, a bit more power. Trusting that they will.
On this weekend the usual winds didn’t sap our strength and energy, instead they served to fuel the vibe as POC converged on The Fastest Track in the West. The air was electric, powered by that invisible turbine in the sky. Our signature event of the year, the Tribute to LeMans Endurance Race, fed the excitement and shone in the smiling faces as we rolled into the paddock. More than the usual number of drivers turned out for the Friday Test & Tune – making it clear that it was “game on” not just for the races, but for Tribute as well. This was going to be a great weekend!
The last year for me has been focused on building the confidence to trust myself as a driver and those around me as I have raced closer than I ever have before. Gaining the intuition—that “Spidey Sense” of where cars are around me, what they might do, how I would react, and doing this at a subconscious level has been the work. Just drive. Don’t overthink. Trust yourself. Trust. Having the elements in place and finding the flow led to the most fun I’ve ever had in a race (except maybe in the rain). Trusting that we could manage the proximity, Andrew Weyman and I traded places multiple times, door to door, mirror to mirror through some of the tightest turns on the track. Exhilarating. Confidence building. So much fun!
Contemplating and prepping for the weekend’s races, the concept of trust percolated in my mind. Trust is the underpinning of all that we do and it plays out across every element of our weekend. We trust that we can navigate the post-COVID crappy drivers emerging from hibernation and make it to the track safely. We drive our trusty steeds. We talk to them. They have names (I know even drivers who don’t admit it publicly have a nickname for their cars). We listen to the engine, the tires talk to us, the cabin noise changes pitch when a car pulls alongside or the winds shift. We cajole, maybe even beg. We ask 16

We trust in ourselves, our fellow drivers, the corner workers, and the track conditions. OK, trust, but verify, on that last one. It’s quite remarkable really. The combination of skills gained, experience, and our ability to adapt to ever changing conditions finds its foundation in trust.
The close racing in the Orange Group demands that trust. We finally had a weekend without major incident. How nice was that for the Comp Committee? There were 32 cars in
Photos: Luis Vivar the field, 24 BSRs, 1 lonely SCR, 5 GT5s and 2 GT7s. The 50 mph plus gusts around Turns 2, 8, and 9 were surprising. Winds barreling through the Owens Valley ahead of a big storm hitting the Eastern Sierra shifted the wind’s direction, causing all kinds of havoc on the track. The consistency of the Winds of Willow that we’ve come to trust became inconsistent. At the entry to T9, the cars were slapped side to side and even the most experienced drivers found the dirt. Everyone slowed a bit…well maybe not the speed demons out front. Anders Hainer and James Mcloughlin continued their battles at the lead of the BSR pack – with Scott Craig taking third on Saturday and Matt Hollander back to his BSR roots for a third on Sunday. Trust in the excellence of Porsche engineering kept the more “vintage” race cars in the mix. GT5 had John Flynn taking 1st on both days, followed by Matt Hollander and Larry Haase on Saturday, with Larry Haase and Scott Matz taking 2nd and 3rd respectively on Sunday. Robert Colaizzi came back to race in GT6, and GT7 racers Ted Frech and

qualms about beating his team sponsor.
The Red Group Racers had a frustrating start on Saturday, but they put their heads down, eyes up, and refocused, turning out solid lap times, despite the conditions. Blowing dust and gusts made for challenging racing. The GT1 rocket ship cars had Al Tiley, Marty Mehterian, and Bruce Blockus in 1, 2, 3 both days. And the same finishing line up in GT2 with Bob Mueller, Mike Monsalve, and Eric Olberz taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd both days as well. The growing GT3 class started 13 cars on Saturday with veteran GT3 Champ Duane Selby finishing 1st, Eben Benade 2nd and Bayan Salehi in 3rd. On Sunday, Steve Town made an appearance to take P1, with Duane Selby taking 2nd and Bayan Salehi in 3rd. Lots of competition in this group and it will be fun to watch as new and returning GT3 drivers get their cars sorted this year. GT4 is thinning out a bit and down to 6 cars. (How about some of the BSR crowd move on up?) On Saturday, the 1-2-3 was occupied by Brad Keegan, Ana Predescu, and Brett Gaviglio. On Sunday, Jim Salzer claimed P1, with Brad Keegan and Brett Gaviglio on his heels. Charlie “Prototype” Persico had a great race – with himself—turning in the 2nd fastest race lap time of the weekend—a 1.21.3 – only bested by Bob Mueller’s 1:20.9 in GT2 on Saturday.
PDS managed by The Mayor, Steve Town, had 14 drivers in 10 classes allowing for lots of space and track time to learn their craft. The future of our club depends on the instruction and skills progression in Time Trials and PDS. We have all benefited from the high level, competition-focused driver development offered by POC, and I’m looking forward to taking the right seat again to pay it forward for the next group of competitors.
Time Trials brought out 27 drivers across 13 classes. It can be a real challenge to drive with such a wide range of cars and this group continues to show improvement navigating traffic and achieving faster laps. Father-son Two Tools Racing Team were back with Vanis clearly demonstrating that he has no

RIP El Toro.
Hello Santa Anita!
All good things must come to an end. So true. We lost a legendary autocross venue last month, one that has served the community for decades. El Toro was the de facto HQ for Porsche AX in Southern California (PCA, then POC), and with precious little warning or fanfare, it disappeared into the history books. And it will be sorely missed. In a pinch, our fearless AX committee rustled up a substitute venue in the sprawling parking lot of Santa Anita Park. While the surface left us wanting, I’ll take that over NO autocross any day. We all owe Michael Oest, John Momeyer and Brian Cooner a huge debt of gratitude for pulling this off on such short notice. Our Fast Five included Michael Oest (TTOD), Scott Mullens, Jonathan Lugod, Adam Tarnoff and Adrian Cardenas. Less than 4 tenths separated first from fifth. Be sure to check out porscheclub.com for complete timed results and season standings. This month’s featured class is M2, where David Nyoff took top honors, followed close behind by Corey and David Reiner, Jerry Griffin and Tristan Zafra. POC History In The Rearview Mirror By Don Kravig, Precision Motion
Last month, I mentioned Dennis Aase who was my mentor in professional racing, and how he ended his career driving and developing the GT Prototype which dominated IMSA racing in the early 90s, winning a championship for Juan Manuel Fangio. Dennis was a consummate pro, and devoted many hours to helping me with car set up, gear ratios and all the other things it takes to make a Porsche 911 competitive. Beginning in 1973 with a C production SCCA championship he campaigned numerous Porsches in the CanAm series, IMSA GTU and GTO series, finally helping to develop the GTP for Dan Gurney until his spectacular crash at Riverside International Raceway. Dennis is listed in the top 10 IMSA drivers of all time, for victories, and poles. Along with Dan Gurney he drove for Alan Johnson, Kendall Racing and various others....which leads me to Andial Motors. When I first encountered Dennis, his cars were being prepared at Andial Motors, which at that time and for many years was the best independent Porsche racing shop in the world. Our chief driving instructor, Dwain Dement started his career at Andial, and wound up being their shop foreman which in some way explains just how good Vision Motorsports is now. Andial was finally bought out by Porsche North America, to provide a foundation for their entry back into

American racing. Dieter from Andial occasionally shows up at the track even to this day, and can usually be found hanging out with Dwain. Which leads me on to...Dan Gurney, member number 168. In May, we all enjoyed re-running our Tribute to LeMans and at the podium at the end, the traditional Champagne dousing. You may be surprised to know that Dan Gurney started that tradition after an unexpected win at LeMans in 1967 with A.J. Foyt. Dan was generally considered the greatest road racer of all time, and he certainly was the smoothest I ever saw. Starting with a Porsche 356 when he joined our club, racing Porsche 911s all over Europe, scoring the first Porsche Formula 1 victory he pretty much did it all and was even part of a Dan Gurney for President Campaign in 1964 (tongue in cheek). Dan and his eventual partner Caroll Shelby were instrumental in taking American hot rodding ideas to European racing. Dan (as far as I know) was the only American constructor to win a Formula 1 race in a car constructed by his own company.

In 1980, Dan came out of a 10 year retirement to race with NASCAR at Riverside Raceway. I was present there, and watched him work that car all the way up to 2nd. The Riverside esses were world famous and you could see every driving style on display that day. Dan was so smooth, and drove the esses with so little wheel input that the car looked like it was on a rail. After breaking a transmission and coasting to a stop in turn 6, you should have heard the crowd cheer as he raised his hand and walked back into retirement. Rest in peace Dan, the club you helped at its founding is in good hands and the road racing is still smooth and fast, and we will always spray champagne in your memory. Dennis Wolfe Any seasoned driver will tell you: Tires. Are. EVERYTHING. And since you will constantly be going through them, you will have ample opportunity to try out different brands with different treadwear ratings - even different sizes/profiles for your existing rims. I highly recommend that you experiment until you find the perfect set for your car and driving style. More about specific brands in a minute... As with all things racing, performance upgrades come with tradeoffs. The stickier the tire, the more expensive it will be and the quicker it will wear out. Depending on the treadwear, it may put you in a completely different class at POC even if everything else on your car is stock. So you have to weigh all of these factors and decide what the sweet spot is for you. In autocross, you generally want a tire that will heat up quickly, provide sharp turn-in and braking, and approach the limit in a progressive, predictable way. Here are some of the tried-and-true contenders that will absolutely shave tenths off your time (treadwear rating in parentheses) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 (and Cup 2 Connect) (180 / 240) / Yokohama ADVAN A052 (200) / Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R (200) / Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 (220) / Falken Azenis RT660 (200) These are all in the Extreme Performance Summer category, and can be easily researched, compared and purchased on tirerack.com. For the true extremist, race-only tires will give you the ultimate in grip, but you better have a trailer for your car or a way to get your spare set to the track if you choose the Hoosiers or Toyos, neither of which can be driven on the street legally. Hoosier A7/R7 (40) / Toyo Proxes R888R (100) / Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R (60) (street-legal) Once you’ve got a sweet new set of fast rubber on your car, now you need to manage your pressures. Get a high-quality racing pressure gauge (I prefer a digital display) for accurate readings. This is the easiest and cheapest way to keep your times as fast as possible. Tires heat up considerably during performance driving, and heat = pressure. The more pressure in your tires, the less “bite” they will have on turn-in, braking and acceleration. Understeer and oversteer increase as pressures increase past a certain point. While everyone has their own preferences, a good rule of thumb is this: the cold pressures as recommended from the factory should become your HOT pressures when autocrossing. Start by bleeding a couple of pounds down on each tire before your first lap. After two laps, check your pressures. If they have gone past the factory recommendation, bleed them back down. That’s it. You will also see folks spraying their tires with water on hot days. Reducing temperature will

help stabilize the pressure. So grab a sprayer from Home Depot and bring it to the track. And last but not least, once you’ve bled out pressure during hot laps, you will likely need to re-inflate your tires before you take your next session after they’ve cooled off. So be sure to have either a plug in or cordless (recommended) air compressor as well. Having great tires and managing their optimal temperature and pressure ranges throughout the day will keep you on the leaderboard. I promise.
