Note from the Editor: It’s always a treat to race at Spring Mountain and this month’s event was certainly sweet...especially in the winners circle where Joe Wiederholt handed out chocolate bunnies to first, second, and third place finishers in both race groups on Easter Sunday. In this month’s edition of Velocity, Andrew Weyman covers the action both on and off the track at Spring Mountain and also interviews one of our newest members. Karen Robinson takes us on a tour of our awesome booth at the Long Beach Grand Prix. And, Don Kravig takes us back in time with more Rearview Mirror episodes. Enjoy! Our first event of Spring was yet another outstanding POC extravaganza. It was a bit breezy on Saturday but the winds never became a major factor. The winds had dissipated before Sunday’s sunrise. I spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning assisting our esteemed president, John Momeyer, with registration. I got to welcome some new members and fist-bump some old-timers who haven’t put the pedal to the metal in a while. My volunteer activities continued into Saturday with stamping tires for Boxster Spec racers. Three fingers and the left side of my nose are still stained with orange ink. Saturday’s Orange qualifying went brilliantly for Karen Robinson in Boxster Spec, who qualified 3rd behind Anders Hainer and Ryan Moore. Don Kravig led GT5 qualifying with his exceptional driving skill. Except for a flock of flying traffic cones, the Orange race start was Spic ‘n Span clean. Black flags flew late in the race after contact in the turn leading onto the front straight. The track was littered with Photos: Luis Vivar metal, plastic and gratitude for our safety equipment. John Momeyer’s car was badly damaged, as was Todd Trimble’s. After the debris was cleared, the race was restarted. I didn’t get back on the track due to a flashing light on my water temperature gauge. It turned out the problem was low fluid level, not overheating. The restart proved to be not-so-good for Scott Matz when he piloted the car he shares with his dad into a tire wall. Once again, gratitude for the safety equipment. The restart was sloppy and drivers were reminded during impound that restart protocol is single file, nose to tail. Anders Hainer, Marc Kolbe and Ryan Moore shared the Boxster Spec podium. Hambis Charalambous took 1st in GT5. Due to the time it took to clear the track before the restart, the second Orange race was rescheduled for Sunday. John Momeyer reported that Todd Trimble of Trophy Performance truly embodied the POC spirit. “After our incident, he brought over all the parts to repair my car, including an axel, wheel, and tire from his car. I heard he also gave a few of the parts from his totaled car to another driver so they could continue running during the weekend. I can’t thank him enough for helping us get back on track on Sunday. This is what the POC is all about!” I couldn’t agree more.

SPRING MOUNTAIN 4/22 Saturday’s Red qualifying session earned Mike Monsalve pole, followed by Eric Olberz and Loren Beggs. Charlie Persico’s performance was impressive in his newly acquired Audi R8 Ultra (imported from Australia). Steve Town led GT3, followed by Ana Predescu, Kevin Roush and Eben Benade. In the race, Monsalve crossed the finish line 1st with Beggs close behind. Olberz took 3rd. Kevin Roush gained a very respectable nine places during the race. The battle between Eben Benade and Ana Predescu was tense. They traded leads several times with Benade making his best move in the last turn of the last lap when Predescu opened the door and Benade squeezed through before she could slam it shut. Andy Kwitowski deserves recognition for a beautifully executed pass on the inside of Turn 2. After the race, John Armstrong told me (with a smile) that he had an epic battle with Tom Stone for last place. Jim Steedman remarked, “I did well for me. I battled with Eric Walsh in his S2000. He can drive!” Sunday morning’s weather was near perfection. Joe Wiederholt did an excellent job of reworking the Sunday schedule to address Saturday’s delay. The Orange group started the morning with qualifying instead of practice. Anders Hainer earned pole, with Ryan Moore and Dallas Carrol on his bumper. Don Kravig was, once again, impressive in GT5. The first Orange race was great fun. I enjoyed running nose-to-tail mid-pack with Eric Rolph for most of the race, hunting for an opportunity to brake late and get past him. It never happened. Rookie Riley Giacomazzi demonstrated some exceptional race craft. The race ended just like it did in qualifying with Hainer, Moore and Carrol standing on the podium. Paul Barnes had lots of fun gaining nineteen places in his SCR. Jim Salzer’s intricate plot to earn points in GT4 backfired big time when he kissed Don Kravig’s rear (bumper, that is). Red group qualifying results put Monsalve, Olberz and Beggs at the front once again. Expectations for the race were high. Unfortunately, John Armstrong had to sit out due to a fluid leak. Roush was leading GT3 during the first lap with Ana Predescu inhaling his exhaust from a few car lengths back. She was followed by Steve Town and Eben Benade. Jim Steedman had a great start and I was excited for him. I admit, I’m a fan. A few laps in, Monsalve was leading Beggs with Olberz chasing close behind. Beggs worked hard to close the gap, with Persico a few tenths behind him. Roush was able to pull away from Predescu with one lap to go. Town and Benade crossed start/finish side by side in epic style. The race concluded with Monsalve and Beggs in a tight finish followed by Olberz just a few car lengths back. Sunday’s second Orange race was classic POC competition. Once again, I worked hard to get past Eric Rolph. It wasn’t looking good until Eric found himself in the dirt and I was able to take advantage of his mistake. Kravig and Charalambous each moved up eleven places during the race. They were racing hard. Hainer, Carrol and Giacomazzi shared the podium. Way to go Riley! Joe Wiederholt awarded chocolate bunnies to all the Orange and Red race winners. 14

SPRING MOUNTAIN 4/22 In the PDS Yellow group, Dave Bent, Razvan Sporea, Michael Myers and James Hovark took advantage of lots of open track and made great progress. In the Time Trial Green Group, Andy Kwitowski, Mike Avitt, Mike Rozenblatt, Rich Gildersleeve, Robert Chang, Bob Gartland, Keith Hnatiuk and Gerrit Wesseling all deserve special mention. In the Time Trial Blue Group, Rennick Palley, Nathan Applebaum, Angela Avitt, Paul Barnes and Tammy Gildersleeve led the way. It was a super weekend. Our POC family is unique in so many ways. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. My drive home was arduous at times. What made it more pleasant was the excitement I still felt from racing with my buddies. I still feel it. There’s nothing else like it. The POC is Club Racing at its Best! I look forward to returning to Spring Mountain in October for some fantastic Fall festivities. Say that three times fast. Faster! Faster!

Driver Profile Rich Gildersleeve I met Rich and Tammy Gildersleeve, members of PCA and first time POCers, at the registration table on Friday afternoon. At Saturday’s dinner, I asked Rich for his impressions about the event and if he had any suggestions as to how we can, as a club, improve. Here’s some of what he shared: Photos: Luis Vivar 32
The event was fantastic; the group, the track, the dinner, and the challenge and fun of learning a new track as well as a new car. Some background. Tammy and I have driven with the PCA TT group for about six years now. We started with a 2015 racing yellow GT3 for two years, then upgraded to a 2016 GT3RS for a few years, then just a couple of months ago bought a 2019 Clubsport Competition, our first factory race car. We got to know the PCA group and the tracks they run quite often, particularly Chuckwalla. We had always heard of great things about the POC and Spring Mountain, but as the PCA kept us pretty busy with our hobby we didn’t have the time to expand to more organizations and more tracks. We both recently stopped working full-time gigs, me as a CTO for a medical company and Tammy as a property manager. We decided to go to more events with our additional free time. This was the first time with the POC and this track. The drive out was pretty cool going through Death Valley late Friday afternoon. We drove to Vegas many times from Carlsbad, our home, but not thru Death Valley. We wondered how many miles we could walk if we broke down - could we survive a 50 mile trek? At the end of the drive, the colors were coming out in the setting sun and the desert turned from foreboding to beautiful, no traffic past Baker (yay!), and rolling into Pahrump we had no idea what to expect. It was fun seeing the small casinos on the strip. We arrived at the track and were greeted by very friendly POC members that helped us first timers get oriented with needed docs and inspections. Special thanks go to the check in guys (John Momeyer, Andrew Weyman, et. al.) and the Vali Motorsports group for the fast and high-quality tech inspection. Everyone’s friendliness and willingness to help made us feel welcome. You made it easy for us first timers! We connected with some longtime friends from PCA, unloaded the Clubsport in the upper paddock near them, got all our docs sorted out and then headed out to check into the hotel and get some dinner. On Friday night we enjoyed great food at the Nugget steak house. We ran into fellow drivers Dirk and Alicia Wray. We caught up with them, then, as we were leaving, spent time with the Vali team who were having a cool get together in the steak house back room. We arrived at the track on Saturday morning with a bit of trepidation. Again, a new one for both of us, and neither of us spent any time on a Spring Mountain simulator. Our only prep was staring at the track map a few times (ok, there is a ‘mushroom top’ up there and some long straights...) and watching a few youtube videos. Tammy and I have new track apprehension for sure. Our new car does not help with the butterflies.

First session strategy for me in the Green TT group was to stay in the slow grid-up lane, preferably in the back of the grid. I’m gonna be slow, so don’t get in anyone’s way, and try to memorize the circuit. My impression? Man, there are a lot of turns! I definitely didn’t have it figured out after the first session. I’m glad I took it so slow. My best time was 2:51.8 and 16th place - 25.5 seconds off the pace. Session 2: I started feeling much better about the layout, had a feel for where the turns and straights are, just no deep knowledge on braking points, turn-ins, speeds I could carry, etc. After a few laps I got down to 2:37.7 and 7th place - 10.8 seconds off pace Sessions 3, 4, 5: I learned a bit more each time and shaved a second here and there. Session 6: Okay, this was our last session. I couldn’t wait. Still cool temps out, putting on a new set of slicks (a huge confidence builder for me), I know the track much better now, and to top that off, Mike Rozenblatt watched my session 5 Vbox video and gave me a great turn-by-turn critique pointing out where I could improve. He did this just 30-45 minutes prior to the session, so extra kudos to him for taking the time when he could have been getting his gear together. Mike noted I was still lifting in a lot of places, like on the straight after the first two sweepers and the drop at the top of the mushroom. Mike was running mid-to-high 2:20s, a testament to his excellent driving skills, and his input was fantastic. I was able to go out with confidence, but still with a high degree of respect for the ‘new’ track and car. I started after the top hot shoes at about fifth or sixth and on the out lap they pulled away

but were still in sight. Hitting the green flag on the front straight to start the first lap I was ready to go and wondered if I could keep the gap with the guys that were smoking me in earlier sessions. I felt really good on the first two sweepers and was able to get to about 1.4 combined g’s without much slipping and speeds in the higher 70s. I finally had the courage to not lift on the long straight away after the two sweepers and then also at the drop at the top of the mushroom. I was trying to hit later braking points and hit my apexes and track outs carrying as much speed as possible. After a few laps, I was still with everyone, except Mike Avitt who was flying with mid 2:20 times, and was having a blast. I felt like I knew the layout pretty well, and I also felt one with the Clubsport for the first time. With that said, there is still plenty left to learn and improve upon. I completed the session feeling elated and was happy to see a significantly improved lap time. I got down to 2:29.6, 6th place and still 4.2 seconds off pace (Mike Avitt), but only 1.5 seconds off pace of second place (Mike Rozenblatt). As I was getting out of the car and getting it ready for Tammy in her Blue group, a fellow Green group driver stopped by momentarily in his silver 911 and gave me an enthusiastic thumbs up which made me feel even better about that session. Who was that guy? :) We left after the second morning session on Sunday to try and beat the holiday traffic back to San Diego. Impressions? What a great group of friendly, knowledgeable and helpful people. The POC is fantastic, as was Spring Mountain. We look forward to coming back many times! And who knows, perhaps some racing too?!

The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, also known as Roar by the Shore, was held April 8th – 10th and this year it was even better with Porsche Owners Club representation. It was the 47th running of the event through the shoreline city’s streets. While all of us (well, maybe not everyone) would prefer to race, we had the next best thing: a very visible, well-placed booth in the Exhibit Hall adjacent to the Porsche Motorsports Paddock and other professional racing teams. Wow! Rubbing elbows, right there with the Pros. 39
by Karen Robinson The sound hits you as you near the race circuit, it ricochets off the buildings causing a rumble in your belly, and the excitement kicks into high gear. That excitement flowed into POC’s booth which included two race cars from club members, a live stream of the on-track racing, and an excellent 40-minute looping video about our Club created and produced by DigitalFilm Tree, one of our Club’s sponsors. If that weren’t enough, we had POC members there sharing the excitement of performance driving and club racing with spectators attending the LBGP. Our mission: to entice them to come out and play with us. Eighteen club members volunteered for 3-4 hour shifts so that our booth had coverage from Friday at 8:00 AM until the conclusion of the final race on Sunday at 5:00 PM. It was an awesome opportunity to highlight just how unique our club is in the world of amateur racing and driver development programs. Through the magic of technology, a QR code linked to MSReg allowed people to sign up for POC membership and get rewarded with one free PDS day – a gift of around $200. Such a deal! As we have sign-ups for WSIR in May and Streets of Willow Events in June we will know just how successful our outreach was at LBGP. POC’s roots are deep, and the Grandson of Club Member #2623 joined the club and we were able to give him the same member number as his grandfather. The legacy of family continues with POC. The BSR and GT3 cars on display drew curious onlookers: “What are these cars that kinda look like cars I see on the street but are nothing quite like what I see on the twisty bits of Mulholland or Ortega Highway?” It gave our enthusiastic club members a chance to share their excitement about the fun of testing themselves at PDS, Time Trials, and Club Racing. Emphasizing that you

will be a better and safer street driver when you’ve practiced driving your car at speed in a safe, controlled environment was our message. The young kids beamed as they sat in Ana Predescu’s GT3 car. Telling them that a woman racer owns the car AND that she’s super fast brought big eyes—especially in the little girls (and their dads). I saw a lot of interest in our club–especially because we have no restrictions on what marque you bring. And I heard a ton of gearhead talk—there is a huge car culture in So Cal and this event was the perfect platform to increase our visibility and reach out to our local community to build our membership. Growth is mandatory if we are to build our Club and keep it alive and vibrant. None of this could have happened without the hard work and efforts of our tireless POC Board Members especially John Momeyer, Matt Hollander, and Scott Craig. Behind the scenes Don Matz made the brochure, banner, posters, and signage that drew people in and gave them something to take home as a reminder. But nothing was more valuable than the one-on-one interaction between car nuts. Once we start, it’s hard to stop. And to cap off the day, we had a visit from The Michelin Man. It doesn’t get much better than that! As the volunteer wrangler, I’d like to thank all the booth worker volunteers who made it possible to share our Love of Vroom: Darin Moore, Andrew Weyman, Brian Cooner, Mick Yanoschak, Glen Gum, Don Kravig, Lee Perkins, Angela Avitt, Mike Avitt, Bob Chang, Andrew Becker , Dave Bent, Scot Mazza, Phil Ross , Don Matz, Aspasia Zouras, Chris MacDuff, and Brett Gaviglio. And thank you as well to other POC members who stopped by and shared their enthusiasm with prospective members. Next year we RACE! Well, probably not, but we can dream.

In qualifying, André Lotterer reached the semifinals and started the race from third on the 3.380-kilometre track – the longest on the Formula E calendar. At the wheel of his Porsche 99X Electric, he matched the pace of the leading group. When activating Attack Mode – eight minutes each time in this race – he lost a position but managed to fight his way up to second place. With just twelve minutes remaining on the clock, he swept into the lead with a sensational overtaking manoeuvre. Over a long stretch, he held the top spot, but lost his

advantage due to a safety car phase and had to allow competitors pass after the restart. When the safety car was again deployed, he was no longer in a position to challenge the front runners. Taking up the race from the seventh grid spot, his teammate Pascal Wehrlein ultimately concluded the race in sixth place after many tough duels for positions behind the leading group. After five races, with the Monaco E-Prix approaching, Mercedes has a slight lead over Porsche for first place in the 2022 standings. The next Formula E race is on 30 April with the Monaco E-Prix, the sixth round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. At the Mexico E-Prix, It was not just a one-two for the Porsche 99X Electric, but a dominant one-two. Watch the 5 minute action here...

POC History In The Rearview Mirror By Don Kravig, Precision Motion

2022 started off with a BANG. Five cars totalled in the first three races is a bang, literally, but before we discuss that, a few comments about the Awards Banquet. For those of you who missed it, Rick Knoop was our guest speaker and his IMSA tales of driving with Jim Busby and Bob Akin brought back lots of memories. His description of he and Busby having to tie their heads up in the seats of the 962 with surgical tubing was worth the price of admission all by itself. Anyhow, a good time was had by all with many well deserved Champions and a most deserving Driver of the Year in Anders Hainer. Before I go on to the Rear View Mirror, I want to mention that the great sportsmanship in our club is still alive and well. After a two car collision at Spring Mountain that almost totalled both cars, Todd Trimble brought every part needed to fix one of the damaged cars, and wound up saving two races for the other driver. He definitely needs to be added to the list of POC Sportsmen along with Dan Gurney, Carl Young, Dennis Aase and Anders Hainer. Speaking of Dennis Aase, when I mentioned to him Rick Knoop and Jim Busby strapping their heads in the 962 with surgical tape, he told me that he thought that he was the only one who had to do that. His description of having his eyeglasses pulled off of his face by G-forces while driving the 962 at Watkins Glen for Al Holbert was both hilarious and illustrative. RIP Al Holbert. Now let’s go way back in time. In 1961, the club first reached 700 members. At that time an
article in the 1961 POC Newsletter (which pre-dates the name Velocity) about the United States Road Race of Champions held at Riverside International Raceway mentions Davy Jordan, Alan Johnson, and George Follmer as class winners. These were all POC members. Porsche Spyders came in first and second at Sebring with drivers Al Holbert, and Oliver Gendebien. The April 1966 cover featured a picture of Manfred Porsche and his wife delivering the first 906 to the United States and giving the keys to Otto Zipper. The car, number 104, was destined for piloting by Scooter Patrick, and was later owned by club member John Dayton. John nearly blew his mind when he discovered a crayon marking on the windshield indicating it was number 104, his car. Needless to say, somebody’s copier was very busy making many copies of these pictures and articles about “his car” for John.

Here’s an interesting piece of history about this car. Number 96-104 was purchased by Otto Zipper and driven by Scooter Patrick. Apparently it was sold to a man in St. Louis followed by its sale to Vasek Polak where it was driven in local races by Milt Minter. In fact, Vasek showed that particular car on his stationery for many years. Anyway, the car was then sold in San Francisco followed by a sale to a young man, Richard Ushler who was in Brentwood and going to school. Ushler, who was driving it on the street, needed some money so advertised it in the LA Times. John Dayton, knowing it must be a mistake but deciding to check it anyway, found it to be fact, looked at it and bought it for $8,500. A hurry up sale of his 1968 911s to Gary Nylander (club President at that time) enabled the purchase of this car, so steeped in nostalgia. The March 1971 issue featured a 914/6 GT on the cover. This issue also records the first ever win for a 914/4 in any POC event. This issue also shows Mike Hammond winning F Production in his 1967 911s. By the way, Michael held the class record in that car for the next 45 years. This issue also records the first win by Gil Rios, in his 904 and Bill Yates, in his 911R. Let’s go on to 1976. The cover of the April 1976 issue is a photo from the tower of the infield during our POC/ PCA Challenge at the Ontario Motor Speedway. It also shows Otis Chandler’s 917K with a line of people waiting for rides. Jokingly, the 917K is referred to as “The Bus” and the line of people waiting to get on are called the “Bus Stop Riders”. The April 1976 issue is also interesting in that it mentions future Daytona 24 hr winner Kevin Buckler, driving a 911R, Hal Shaw, (IMSA Competitor) driving an RSR, and Vasek Polak driving a 914/6. By the way, Hal Shaw is recorded as buying a round of drinks for 50 POC Members at the HQ Hotel, followed by reciprocal buying. It also mentions that he was poured into bed that night. Hal Shaw competed for many years in IMSA, and had his 935 burned to the ground at Watkins Glen. He had it crushed and epoxied and used it as a coffee table in his house. RIP Hal. By the way, the POC took over 60% of the Trophies in the combined competition event. The financial recap shows 131 entrants at an average fee of $30 and shows that we rented OMS at $550/day, the Club made a total profit of $616 on the Event. On a personal note, there is also a picture of my father and I seated in two different RSRs on the pre-grid. Finally, I will close with this, the POC ran many combined events with the PCA over the years, and I cannot remember a single one that did not come off both smoothly and professionally. I will give you a contrasting Milt Minter story. Milt Minter and Dennis Aase were at one of the early Festivals of Speed to drive Historic Porsche cars. A PCA Tech Steward (so called) refused to let Milt Minter on the track as he was wearing his original driving suit from 917 days. Festival of Speed! RIP. Finally, let’s get back to the big BANG. Collisions are typically caused by one of three things, 1) mechanical failure; 2) letting your enthusiasm override your talent; and 3) bad judgment. The first two are just part of racing, but can still ruin someone’s weekend. The last one can be corrected with some careful insight into your driving style. This Club is about sportsmanship, good racing, good friendship, and, good judgment. Derek Bell raced for 40 years professionally, and is still active. I believe in his whole career he only had one bad accident. And I think that was caused by equipment failure. Let him be an example for us all.
