Note from the Editor:
The 2023 season is off and running. Even though there was a moderate turnout for the first Streets of Willow event, several lap records were broken. Steve Town tells us all about it in his “Streets” article and Steve Eisler covers our gala 67th Awards Banquet. We also welcome Sandy Isaac back. After a long hiatus, Sandy graces us with wit and humor in his article about what the past 20 years in the POC has meant to him. And finally, Chet Kolley reports on the first of our POC Shop Profiles, Vision Motorsports.
Coming up next...our first big event at Big Willow. Hope to see you all there!

The Streets of Willow is a gem in the race track world in my view, and can be used in so many different ways. From the skid pad to racing, from cars to bikes, private rental options, and the periodic tv commercials, Streets sees it all.
But I’ve always felt it’s the best track I’ve seen for both learning and honing your skillset, no matter the level of driver or racer you are. Better yet, if you can catch a relatively calm day of wind, and reasonable temps, it should be a great day for you on track to accomplish pretty much anything you want to. And we had that for our annual season opening event.
This is the way to bring the new year in, at Streets with its recent resurfacing (a little over a year ago) and still running quick, along with a nice sized field of drivers. For this event, 54 drivers were on hand to shake off the holiday cobwebs. Given we set up the schedule with 4 run groups, everyone had room to stretch their legs and have room for those passing runs up into the bowl and into turn 1. For this event, we scheduled it for just one day, running counterclockwise (CCW).
Jim Salzer began his tenure as PDS Director at Streets, and thanks Jim for taking on the role for the club. While PDS was a small group this time, they got a great start with an always valuable track walk, with Dwain Dement providing a healthy dose of Streets information and experience.
A number of Streets CCW track records were set on the day, all eye opening. Congratulations to all of you and to the several other hot laps that weren’t records, but great drives.

TheStreets
Lets start with BSR and Anders Hainer blistering a late morning session with a new BSR track record of 1:22.701. That is a remarkable time in a BSR, heck in any car, but in a BSR, super quick. Scott Craig was right on Anders’ “bumper” so to speak with a 1:23.7 in an earlier session, which looked like the marker, until Anders kicked it up a notch. I’m thinking this 1:22.701 might stand for a while.
In the GT classes there were also a number of CCW records set, and it was great to see long time members out and hitting their stride with excellent laps.
Lets start in GT2. Razvan Sporea brought out his Cup car and knocked out a CCW track record with a 1:18.92. Jeremy Bernath in his 911 classed GT4 ran the record to 1:18.322, with Chris MacDuff (GT4 also) right behind in 1:18.977. In GT6 Sandy Isaac set a new record with a quick 1:30.062. And in GT7 Darin Pines ran a 1:36.198, in PDS. That’s quite unusual for a PDS class driver to set an outright track record, in a GT classed car. Congrats Darin, way to go. That’s a heckofa start your track driving.
In the non GT/BSR classes, either stock cars or slightly modified, there were also some CCW track records set. When you can drive your car to the track, set a new track record, and drive home on the same tires, that’s a good day! Congratulations drivers!
In Modified 3, Roth Desko ran a 1:20.884, in his GT4. In Modified 4 Vivek Hazari ran a 1:24.177 in his Cayman. And in Stock 3, Thomas Beer, in his red 911, ran a very good 1:23.348. Every time out on track each of these driver’s get quicker and quicker. I think the Red Cup race group might start to wonder what these driver’s could do in a fully prepped race car!
There were a number of other excellent laps and driver’s that were moving their non-race car prepped cars around the track. Rob Walker set a quick Stock 4 time of 1:24.048. Russell Murdock Stock 4 1:26.802.

Nathan Apelbaum ran a strong 1:22.632 in Modified 2. And Matt Bernath (great to see you out there in a BSR Matt) drove Chris MacDuff’s BSR to a 1:24.146. Nobody in the top 10 of the BSR race group wants Matt out there racing with them. But we all want to see Matt out there racing BSR! Well done Matt.
In PDS, Ryan Fisher ran a very good 1:27.170 in a BSR. Again, a PDS driver knocking out a very respectable time, and hopefully Ryan moves along to TT and into the racing group soon.
In the GT’s, Reuben Raveendran in GT2 ran a very quick 1:20.820, while driving in the Open Passing TT group. Same goes for Aspasia Zouras, in GT5, ran a quick 1:26.115
Many thanks to Luis Vivar for his photographic work. We all appreciate his efforts for photo;s but also POC social media. And thank you to the corner workers for a safe day.
Joe Wiederholt represented the POC in his capacity as Director of Motorsports and also made sure the track troops were fed with some good catered sandwiches. Thanks as always Joe. Scott Craig, thanks for registration set up and smooth process Sat morning.
Thanks, as always, to Dwain Dement for so much time toward all of us in support, from the PDS track walk, to driving suggestions, and flat bed support.
The next Streets, non race, event is scheduled for June 3,4. We hope to see you out there at one of the best tracks in the country for testing your strengths and working on weaknesses. The Streets of Willow with POC.
...see you at the next race.

Sandy Isaac 20 YEARS IN THE POC
...which is crazy because it seems like yesterday when I drove my stock Leaf Green 1969 911E to my very first “STS” event at Streets of Willow. The guy that got me there was a legendary troublemaker named Otto. He owned Otto’s Venice and had been fixing up my “project” that I had purchased in 2001 for $7500. (When plenty of people were sure I had TOTALLY overpaid for it.) Otto, specialized in making air-cooled Porsches very fast, especially 914’s. And in 2003, there were plenty of 914’s, because every event was dominated by air-cooled Porsches. Out of 100+ cars at every STS event at Streets of Willow, there were only a couple 924’s, 944’s and always one brown 928. Boxsters and 996’s hadn’t really arrived yet. The club’s fastest drivers were in the infamous V3/R5 group made up of 3.0 and 3.2 911’s that were all supposed to be nearly identical in their power modifications. (A year later, I was standing next to Otto at Big Willow when a Carrera blew by us on the front straight and Otto screamed, “That guy’s cheating.” I asked him how he knew. “Because I’m cheating and he’s kicking my ass!”)
But I digress. I could tell who the Fastest were during my very first Drivers Meeting immediately. They had the swagger. The inside jokes. And grease under their fingernails. They all had their eyes on one STS trophy plaque to be awarded later -- Fast Time of Day. Because at the close of every STS event, you had 2 flying laps, nearly all by yourself, to show just how fast you could go. The clock never lied. Those were the bragging rights everyone wanted to take home.
Things I remember from Day 1… Club President, Greg Franz, starting the drivers meeting by telling us newbies that he had just driven in from the airport and could assure us that no one from the Porsche factory would be at the event. So we should take it easy and learn from our instructors. I remember a Road Warrior named Mike Hammond who drove a beaten black 1967 911S with a whale tale so big you could serve a family dinner on it. I remember a friendly guy with a multicolored early 911 named Magnus with enormous dreadlocks and a crazy beard. I remember Otto unloading Rudy, his hand-built tube-frame 914 that weighed less than 2,000 pounds, with a beastly engine that he’d push to take that coveted FTOD award that day. I remember the Streets
30
parking lot filled with Porsches the members drove there to compete in. Because that’s what you did then. You drove your car to the event. Beat the daylights out of it all day long. Then drove it home. I remember seeing guys arrive with an extra set of track tires in their car. (Something I’d be doing less than a year later.) I remember the V3/R5 race cars were towed to the track by their owners, a couple arriving in deluxe closed trailers, not open trailers like Otto’s.
And, of course, I vividly remember my run sessions with Otto yelling instructions at me from the right seat. Until he got fed up. Then we pitted. Changed seats. And he showed me just how smooth and fast I should be on the track. In the process, he caught a 944, and began honking my horn at the driver to get out of his way. I panicked. “Don’t do that. He’ll think it’s me.” Otto nearly laughed under his openfaced helmet, “Don’t worry. He knows it isn’t you.”
After that first day, I was 100% hooked. I loved the intense adrenaline rush every lap brought. Forcing me to focus only on what it took to be fast and smooth. Like Otto. (But then again, who was I kidding? I’d never be that fast or that smooth.) POC track days continue to be my thrilling, necessary, temporary escape from the chaos of my life. My Happiest Place.
Years after Day 1, I went from the 911E to a ’75 914 with a 3.2 swap. Then after that, I brought a red 1970 Datsun 240Z. That went to Primer Grey. And is now Porsche Brewster Green. I remain grateful and appreciative that the POC members allow my “exotic” among them at the Time Trial events as I enter my 21st season.
Needless to say, 20 years later, there are so many elements of the POC that have changed, evolved and improved. But what’s never changed are: 1.) The members’ passion and talent for driving at the absolute limit, 2.) Their concern for safety even as they occasionally enter Turn 1 at Big Willow 4-wide, 3.) Their camaraderie and respect for one another before, during and after an event, 4.) Their dedication to giving back by instructing those wide-eyed Newbies.
Because someone at Streets of Willow on 1/7/23 did their very first track event. And there’s a really good chance they’re about enjoy the next 2 decades going very, very fast in their Porsche (or maybe their Datsun :).

POC 67th ANNUAL BANQUET
by Steve Eisler
As I was finishing this article, I was describing the most prestigious awards that were kept secret until the end of the banquet. These Special Awards were for the people that had made the greatest contributions to the club during the past year and deservedly were presented after all other awards. But this is a recap of the festivities, and I decided to rewrite the article because the most important awards of the evening need to be recognized first. If you don’t read the rest of this article, at least you will know the people that have made major contributions to your club, and you can congratulate them and thank them for their efforts when you see them at the track!
The Member of the Year was Karen Robinson. Karen is an active BSR racer; is in charge of certifying tires for all BSR competitions; sends out the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plates for our wall plaques; and even made the center pieces for each banquet table.
Mike Monsalve was named Driver of the Year. Mike won the GT1 class and had the highest point total of any driver in the Red Cup Racing group.
Most Improved Cup Racer was Ryan Moore, who started modestly and finished 2nd in the super competitive Boxster Spec class.
Alan Watts was the Most Improved Time Trial Driver. After just running 2 TT’s at the start of the season he came on strong in the second half of the season with 3 impressive wins and took 1st place in the Boxster Spec TT competition.
Riley Giacomazzi was named the Rookie of the Year after starting the season in TT and moving up to finish 3rd in two Orange Cup Races. Riley will be graduating from high school later this year!
Karen Robinson garnered 1500 service points to become the Service Points Champion. Her impressive total earns her the prestigious number 1 for her car and is another indication of her dedication to making POC the best club possible.
The Red Group Competition Points Champion was Mike Monslave who scored 340 points by winning 11 out of the 16 races he entered.
Paul Barnes was the Orange Group points Champion. In class Carrera Spec he won all 18 of the races he entered for a total of 460 points.
Chick Richardson John Deere Weed Harvesting Award went to Larry Haase for the most outstanding off road excursion of the year.
Congratulation to all of these great champions and club contributors.

After finishing my first season in the POC Time Trial Series, I was eager to attend the highly recommended awards banquet. Kathy and I arrived at the Porsche Irvine Dealership to find that all of the cars on the main showroom had been replaced with 15 beautifully decorated 10-top tables. After checking in and getting our name tags, we proceeded down the red carpet to get our pictures taken by Luis Vivar, and to be greeted by host and emcee Chris MacDuff.
In the cocktail area, behind the red carpet, there were two bars, one for beer and wine, and another bar for mixed drinks. Our first drink was included as a part of the dinner, and there was a huge table overflowing with every type of fruit, cheese, crackers, chips, and sweets that you could imagine. I could have eaten dinner from that table!
Most of the tables in the banquet area had placards announcing who had reserved them, but some had placards that just said “Table 15”. With our good friends from San Diego, Mike and Angela Avitt, we decided that Table 12 had a good location. We were soon joined by Geary Smith, who races a GT3 in the Red Group, and then by Mickey Giacomazzi and his son Riley, who race in Boxster Spec. As they asked everyone to be seated for dinner, Jimmy Lorimer (a GT1 racer) and his wife joined our ‘unaffiliated’ table.
After a quick greeting, our emcee, Chris MacDuff introduced Volker Holzmeyer – President and CEO of Porsche Motorsports North America. Volker told us about PMNA activities and programs, and then answered questions from the audience. He told us that cars, of all types, would remain in short supply for the foreseeable future, and that Porsche F1 plans were stalled among other insights. He said that he drove a Panamera, because he needed room for his family, but that he had driven a Taycan for several weeks and had really enjoyed it.

While the rest of us enjoyed our fantastic buffet dinner professional drivers Joe Catron, Mike Hammond, Rick Knoop and Don Kravig conducted a “Fireside Chat”. Joe told us stories of racing with his dad. Mike related tales of racing in the ‘50’s, when the grids were large and the regulations were few, Rick and Don told of their exploits racing together, and all of them shared great stories of racing at iconic tracks of the past and present. Their ‘Chat’ was wonderful, light entertainment for the dinner hour, and everyone appreciated their willingness to share their experiences with us.
Kathy cringed when she saw that an Annual Meeting was next on the Schedule. President John Momeyer welcomed everyone to the party, called the meeting to order, and introduced the 2023 Board Members. Treasurer, Scott Craig, reported that all funds had been audited, taxes had been filed and paid and that the club was, “in very good shape financially”. Secretary, Nathan Johnson, reported that all meeting minutes had been approved and recorded and could be viewed by members online. Then the meeting was adjourned, and Kathy said it was the best meeting she had ever seen!
Emcee Chris MacDuff took the stage to thank the audience for attending and to thank all of the members that had worked so hard to make this evening such a great success. He also conducted a contest for us to guess which of several prominent members had master minded the prank that named Eben Benade as the Best-Looking Man in POC!
Throughout the proceedings a computer image of a modified Wheel of Fortune was projected on a giant screen above the podium. It had the POC logo in the center, and each of the pie-shaped wedges contained the name of one of the banquet guests. From our table the names on the wedges were too small to read but when the computer program was activated the wheel spun and stopped, randomly, on a wedge. That name was then magnified and moved to the center of the screen so that everyone could see the winner of the door prize. It was the neatest, quickest way to award prizes that I had ever seen. And, the prizes were great! There were 4 packages of Rennsport Reunion 4-day tickets, several $1000 Tarett Engineering gift certificates, certificates from Stand 21, Westwood Racing and many others. I won one of several $500 POC Buck Gift Certificates, which I thought were the best prizes of all.
Don Matz, editor of the Velocity newsletter, introduced his staff, called us to the podium and made some very nice comments about the efforts made in the production of our club’s monthly publication.
At the end of his emcee duties, Chris revealed that he was, in fact, the perpetrator of the Best Looking Man in POC prank, and he had secretly printed the stickers and placed them on Eben’s car. Then it was time for the main event! The awarding of beautiful leaded-crystal goblet trophies to the Event Champions.

After the Special Awards had been presented most people lingered to socialize, take pictures, and congratulate winners. I sought out Mike Hammond to ask him when he had decided to retire from racing, and he replied, “I’m still racing. I hope to be out at Willow Springs some time this year.” Mike said he was 90 years old, still feeling fine and liked to do a few TT events each year. So, I have finished my first year of POC Time Trialing and attended my first POC Banquet! I have had dinner with an 18-year-old Rookie of the Year and met a 90-year-old racing legend. I have driven on one of the oldest tracks in the west, Willow Springs, and was in the first group to compete at the brand-new Charleston Peak track at Spring Mountain. I have raced with some of my very good friends and met many new friends. I have gotten a little faster and a lot more confident, and Kathy and I are looking forward to spending many weekends with all of you in 2023!

POC SHOP PROFILE
52
By Chet Kolley
They’re a fixture in the paddock. You see their wind shield banners on the track. He’s become the POC host at our ‘home track’. A shop that needs no introduction is Dwain Dement’s Vision Motorsports. Of course, anyone who’s spent much time at POC events knows Dwain, his guys, and the Vision logo, but there’s a long and interesting history that goes back many years.
53
Dwain got his start working at a VW and Porsche shop when he was just 15 doing coop work at the end of the school day. He loved the work, learned a lot, and got to know the Orange County Porsche & Audi scene at places like the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. Eventually, he landed a spot at the famed Andial, named after its three founders: Alwin Springer, Dieter Inzenhofer, and Arnold Wagner. Dwain’s passion for the ‘proper way’ of doing things endeared him to the Andial team. Along the way, Andial split into two parts, the service division where Dwain spent most of his time, and the race department where he’d get loaned to from time to time. Although it was a great place to work and learn, Dwain always wanted his own shop to earn a living and do things his own way, so it was just a matter of time...
In the early days, it was just Dwain and a two-bay garage. While still working for local shops, Dwain would take his truck and tools to POC events and pitch in when cars inevitably broke. People got to know Dwain and what he could do, and over time, they’d seek him out away from the track to work on their cars.
Vision Motorsports was founded in 1995 with just enough money to pay for a small shop, tools, a business license, and insurance. Even a phone was a stretch. Fortunately, his reputation helped him to grow fast, and soon a desk for the phone and a mini-fridge came along. Eventually, the Andial race department was bought by Porsche and became Porsche Motorsports. Over time, as Vision grew, a few of the mechanics – Sean Butler, Bert Kager, and Steve Becker – joined Dwain, and they became referred to in some circles as ‘Andial South’.
Dwain and Vision have long been part of the POC family and racing. From those early, preVision days of hauling his tools to the track in his Bronco, to the now familiar Vision haulers, cars, and mechanics at every POC event, there have been a lot of adventures and twists and turns. At a POC event at Phoenix International Raceway in the late 90s, Dwain was asked to drive a customer car in a Saturday Cup Race. From DFL to 3rd in his first POC race, Dwain made such an impression on then Chief Driving Instructor, Mike Hammond, that Mike asked Dwain to instruct the next day! As Dwain added more crew to Vision with guys like Nick Emens and Mo Olson, there came more race series, tracks, and states. POC led to IMSA, Grand Am and even a couple of trips to the Rolex 24 with POC members.
Eventually, life began to intrude - wives, children, illness, other responsibilities – and the Vision family voted to come home from the road to a bit of normalcy around a premier SoCal

Porsche shop. Vision became renowned for race engines, chassis setup, roll cage building and fabrication, and some very cool innovations targeted at speed and reliability. Engines would arrive from all over the country and even from different continents! It not unusual for 3 or more engines to flow throw Vision on a given week tallying up to over 100 engines a year. Dwain and his team became recognized as experts at taking street cars and turning them into competitive, dedicated race cars.
More comings and goings, and after a bit of rest for everyone, it was time to take to the track again. Dwain bought a rig to bring some mechanics to the track for a taste of motorsports and to do some track support for POC racing customers. Dwain and his team would build cars, Dwain would race them for a while and win races and set track records, and then someone would say ‘I gotta have that’, and it would be time to start over. And again. Then came the tap on the shoulder to take on the role of POC Chief Driving Instructor. That was seven years ago. Anyone who has gone through the POC Racer’s Clinic since then knows Dwain very well.
Nowadays Vision is so busy, there is often a wait list to get on a hauler for transport and support for race weekends. Jim Salzer joined a few years ago to take the Transport operation to the next level and even incorporating professional instruction from time to time. Laurie Taylor from the POC joined the shop, Steve Burrell manages both sides of the business, and Tess runs the books. Vision haulers bring 15 to 18 cars to the track at typical POC weekends along with Steve, Nick, Bert, and a couple more guys.
Vision cars are at or near the top of the podium in multiple classes on any given POC race weekend. Dwain is a fixture at the paddock, typically buzzing around on some cool two-
wheeled thing. Unless of course we are at Willow Springs, which is also the location of the Vision Motorsports Ranch, which Dwain runs with Martina Kwan. In that case, our host –and he really has become that – is most often seen driving around his Jeep.
Dwain is always the guy to pitch in, help out, and stay late. He’s been known to loan parts, tools, mechanics, elbow grease, and brains, and sometimes even put on a race suit and helmet. I’m happy to call Vision my shop, Dwain my friend, and I’m thrilled to write this first profile of ‘Shops of the POC’. All the best for a fabulous 2023!

Porsche Vision 357 Celebrates the Iconic 356
past, present & future
Meet the Porsche Vision 357. While this Porsche isn’t based on a vintage 356 chassis, it does look to Porsche’s legendary sports coupe for its design inspiration. Though much like the Porsche 356 did 75 years ago, the Vision 357 looks toward the future of auto design.
Based on a Porsche 718 GT4 RS, this Vision 357 Concept isn’t just a gutless show car. It packs the Cayman GT4 RS’s 493-hp flat-six under the engine cover.
Porsche notes this Cayman mill is tuned for eFuel use, and that designation is proudly labeled on the Vision 357’s fuel door.
Sadly, this Vision 357 Concept isn’t heading to an assembly line, at least anytime soon. It wouldn’t be unexpected to see some of these elements make their way to the next Boxster or Cayman, but it’s safe to assume this one-off concept will stay just that.
