ROSSANA KITCHEN GALLERY - D7 SENTUL ROSANNA, being an exclusive and exquisitely designed kitchen brand from Italy. In this showroom in Kuala Lumpur, we were privileged to work with the product, finding ways to create a vault like space to house the product, all the while referring to the original design materiality, composition and colout palette. Being a showroom by invitation, this leaves us with the opportunity to design the gallery with the lowest profile exposure to the external public spaces, almost as if it becomes a curiosity. The internals are precedented by their main unit as a point of focus and as such the kitchen is enhanced into a form of product design, or an artifact in an art gallery.

SMEG SALES GALLERY - D7 SENTUL As the building with which the project was housed is designed with distinctive architectural signatures with regards to faรงade, planning and material palette, it was decided that the design shall reflect a 'temporary condition' as if they were mere exhibition spaces. Taking into consideration the visual permeability of the surrounding circulation spaces and courtyard, we designed a 'pod' like structure to be erected within the premises instead of changing the faรงade to create visual attention. The 'pod' shall contain all the main functional requirements, display background and utilities, while the remaining spaces within and outside of the pods are used as gallery spaces for the boutique. Thus, we envisioned a pod that is designed to an abstracted version of the 'monopoly' house blocks. The pod is placed within the premises, detached from the faรงade and devoid of all enclosed ceiling. It is like a space within a bigger space.

The pod is punctured, cut, folded, forming creases and surfaces that are functional. The viewer is encouraged to meander and sieve through the gallery randomly. This allows the spaces to be more 'human' and engage the viewers in an informal manner. Being entirely made out of Oriented Strand Board, the pod refers to crates and wooden pallets that are placed on site, pried and gutted open to house an exhibition.

3 COUNTRY WIDE HQ - KUALA LUMPUR Differentiated cladding* The cladding of the building is designed to achieve a distinct architectural affect. The disparate relationship between the interior vs exterior would render the cladding affect that relates more to the way the building is seen and visually read. The envelope of the building consists of a randomly graduated series of aluminum louvers of varying density that are placed in a vertical format. By exploiting the height of the louvers within designated areas, the building is rendered much larger and taller than it actually is. Seen from an angled approach (due to the parallel narrow access road), the aluminum louvers with their 50mm exposed front and 125mm flange would reflect sunlight at varied angles. The reflections create a differentiated appearance that changes as one approaches the building. In combination with highly reflective fragments glass, the building would at times become camouflaged unto the polluted skies.

D.CHENG RESIDENCE - BASONG As the second project in the brickwork series experimentation, Basong is a further interpretation of our intent towards regaining the persistent material in the vicinity. (refer Balau for comparison) Basong was conceived as a monumental brickwork volume that breaks away the convention of a typographical modern Malaysian house. The scale and deliberate misalignment of windows on the front elevation detracts from the ordered glass curtain wall faĂ§ade that flanks the side elevations. The recurring theme here is an array of spaces and rooms, either physically or visually permeable amongst each other. Each of these spaces and rooms are oriented towards the garden and pool that forms a breathing space between the building and its surrounding mass. Mid-way through the development of the design, we realized that the house was becoming 'gestapo-like' in its discipline towards a preset architectural grid. We needed to humanize itâ&#x20AC;Ś All the while, we had envisioned that this site is an open area in entirety on plan. Thus the opportunity to utilize the rooftop as a public open space was seized and subsequently developed. To link all the spaces together, a continuous circulation loop from the lower garden that leads up to the first floor across the pool, subsequently would connect to the roof top garden via a suspended bridge that seemingly coils around the house. From the roof top garden, the user would be lead into the house from the study, leading downwards to the family area and thereafter down to the living spaces downstairs. By chiseling, carving and hand-hewn the preconceived form, the circulation path becomes punctuated with prominent 'white-block' nodal points internally and externally, large and small. Coupled with the ability for the spaces to be experienced in a reversed sequence, we felt that the little 'quirkiness' added to the plot has humanized the building. Definitely feels human to bastardize a perfectly formed face.

PROJECT (Residential) TOH RESIDENCE - SUBANG Toh house was conceived through a figure ground planning exercise. When it was designed, the surrounding vicinity was totally empty, thus we had to envision the forthcoming neighbouring houses (it is actually quite easy to predict as everyone in Malaysia builds to the max and 3 storeys ). The solution was driven by the need to create a 'defensive' front elevation, while the rear would open up into the main garden and activity spaces. Building scale was efficiently controlled to ensure that the house would contain all the basic requirements of 5+1 rooms, 2 kitchens, 2 livings etc within a buildup of 4600sqft. It was deliberately designed to avoid having the need for a third level in order to maintain the perfect vertical mass versus garden area ratio.

The spaces revolve around the main garden, positioned with direct view and access from all the common areas. It is designed as 2 separate main volumes, separated by a 'transparent' connection that allows physical and visual permeability between both volumes. The above ensures that the mass of the building does not overwhelm the open, outdoor spaces. At the main building, the internal columns and main structure were placed and formed as a grid ordered lattice outside the building. The lattice allows the internal spaces to be column free and can be transformed into an outdoor patio by opening all the enclosures. At the same time, the lattice also manages to dematerialize the mass of the building, as if they were permanent scaffolds placed outside the building.

PROJECT (Residential) SETIA BAKTI 8 - BUKIT DAMANSARA As the third project in the brickwork series experimentation, SB8 continues our quest towards regaining the persistent material in the vicinity. (refer Balau and Basong for comparison) In this iteration, the brickwork faรงade took a more muted presence and attains seemingly low key backdrop to form the basis where the new structures would emerge. As an approach to the design, we believe that existing buildings, whether in good condition or historically important, can be adapted and put to new use. These buildings provide a resource rather than an irritation and should be assessed for the qualities they can bring. The reuse of existing buildings is in itself a sustainable strategy in preserving the embodied energy of the existing built elements. In SB8 house, this is further pursued by adapting the existing structure into new architectural adaptations. The scale and profile of the existing streetscape and adjacent building were studied in order to maintain a harmony in our intervention. Besides providing a visual and historical continuity to the house, the surfaces were formed into pod-like dual piched volumes thrust outwards from the original building necessary to accommodate the spatial requirements. The new volumes would nest comfortably upon the brickwork faรงade and the overall composition would seemingly depict a natural transformation of the existing house.
