A Rare Yes! BY TODD KUCKKAHN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PORTAGE COUNTY BUSINESS COUNCIL
The success of our business community depends on a strong local educational system—not only to build a capable workforce from within, but to attract and retain high-quality talent from outside the area. The Portage County Business Council (PCBC) Board of Directors encourages you to vote yes on both school district referenda.
IN THIS ISSUE Leadership and Self-Deception Who Won the GRAND PRIZE? A necklace worth $2,500 dollar!
Step into Someone Else’s Shoes The community is invited to participate in a poverty simulation.
Letters to Santa Upskilling Your Workforce With unemployment rate nearing record lows, companies have to make sure their current workforce has the skills to be successful.
Ambassador of the 3rd Quarter Volunteers Needed!
PCBC primarily focuses on education and awareness when it comes to legislative matters, including referendum and candidates. The schools are too important for a thrivent community. Our economic development and quality of life are impacted directly. On the November 6th ballot, the Stevens Point Area School District has posed two referendum questions. If passed, the funding will enable the district to make critical infrastructure improvements, improve academic services, stay current with technology demands, properly fund maintenance and remain competitive with neighboring school systems. PCBC encourages you to vote on both referendum. As business leaders, we understand the correlation between education and talent supply. If our school systems falter, the result will be a devastating blow to the most vital component of our businesses – our workforce. In today’s educational climate, with factors such as open enrollment, school choice, and teacher retention, schools need to mirror some of the practices successful businesses use to remain competitive. The two referendum need to be considered separately and they will be found on the back of the ballot. Not only has the school district whittled away what some might consider unnecessary, but they have also trimmed considerably to get to a manageable number for the bonding. I hope you’ve seen the pictures and heard the stories about some of the lousy conditions in the schools. PCBC encourages you to visit the district’s Forward Together information page, in which the needs and challenges precipitating this referendum are outlined in detail. You will also learn how these two referendum can help the district overcome these challenges, so it can continue providing a high-quality education to the students within our community and retain our quality teachers and administrators. Let’s help move our schools Forward Together. Thank you for your consideration.

we face? How do you know we are climbing the right mountain? Learning to assess your path and conquer those challenges, with confidence and strength is an important part of a successful journey. About our Speaker: For 27 years of her professional career, Kate Peterson Abiad was involved in collegiate coaching of women’s basketball at the Division 1 level. Kate served as an assistant coach for a combined 12 seasons at Indiana, Eastern Illinois and Wisconsin, and then went on to become the leader and head coach of the Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Program for 15 years.
She captured the program’s first-ever league tournament championships, twice, and secured the program’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament in school history. Kate became the all-time winningest coach in program history and while investing in the leadership and development of many remarkable women, 16 of those women also earned special league accolades over 15 seasons. A native of River Falls, Kate graduated from UW-Stevens Point. During her senior year, she herself earned All-American honors, Team MVP, and set an NCAA Division III national
the Active Voice - 2018 record for three-point field goals made per game. She was a four-year starter and was inducted into the UW-Stevens Point Hall of Fame in 2000. Kate earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stevens Point and her master’s degree in counseling and educational psychology from Indiana. On April 1, Kate made the difficult decision to step down from her love of coaching and shift her focus to her family to be more involved while her children grow. She moved to Stevens Point where she is an Assistant Director for the WIAA. Kate and her husband, Phil, who has served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland State women’s volleyball program for the last 18 seasons, have two daughters, 9-year old Mea and 2-year old Remi.

The Women’s Fund of Portage County hosted its 16th annual fundraiser, A.R.T.S. Night (A Reason to Shop, Share and Socialize), on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at the Holiday Inn & Convention Center in Stevens Point. A.R.T.S. Night is the largest fundraiser for the Women’s Fund of Portage County. Over 250 attendees enjoyed shopping for a variety of art, a raffle, silent auction, light buffet, live music from students of the UWSP Music Department as well as a few community soloists and a cash bar. This year Joan North was the featured artist. North was an artist at the very first A.R.T.S. Night many years ago and has participated every year since then. She also served on the Women’s Fund board as President. In addition to Joan North, there were 37 unique artists that participated in the 2018 A.R.T.S. Night. All artists generously donated 25% of their sales from A.R.T.S. Night to the Women’s Fund. In its sixteenth year, A.R.T.S. Night generated over $30,000 of charitable funds which will go directly to grants given in 2019 by the Women’s Fund to community groups providing services to
local women and children throughout Portage County. Support from sponsors also helped offset costs so that 100% of the event proceeds go directly to grants in 2019. The following are 2018 A.R.T.S Night sponsors to be recognized: Exclusive Sponsor - Mark Toyota of Plover, Elite Sponsors - BMO Harris Bank, Delta Dental of Wisconsin and Furniture & ApplianceMart, Premier Sponsors - Regnier Consulting Group and Simplicity Credit Union.
