It is The Portage District Library’s procedure to cancel youth programs if the Portage Public Schools are closed due to weather related conditions.

Monday, April 9, 16, 23 9:30 AM PRESCHOOL Interact with your 2 year old to nurture a love of books. We will learn letters, sounds, new words and self expression through books, fingerplays and creative movement. Siblings under the age of 2 are welcome. No registration required.

Saturday, April 21 10:00 AM PRESCHOOL Share your love of books and learning. Come on in and listen to books, stories, rhymes and creative movement with your children. No registration required.

Tuesday, April 10, 17, 24 Wednesday, April 11, 18, 25 10:30 AM PRESCHOOL Preschool age children will build language skills while listening to stories, learning rhymes, moving to music, and learning the mystery letter of the week! No registration required.

MOTHER GOOSE STORYTIME

CATS: AN ART EXHIBIT March 2nd - May 18th

The exhibit views felines through the eyes of painters, photographers, sculptors, a quilter and mixed media artists. This is the second of our series of exhibits focusing on animals as subjects of art.

MEMOIR WRITING WITH COLLEEN PETERS

Wednesday, April 4th 6:30 PM Writers will be guided on how to revive and relate past stories and lifestyles, leaving valuable histories to their families. Please bring a pencil, pen and notebooks. Instructor: Colleen Peters, former newswoman and freelance writer. The series runs from April 4th through May 23rd. Register by calling 329-4542 Ext. 600. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Thursday, April 12th 3:30 PM Age Group: TEEN Join Quyen for an afternoon of crafting! We will be making jewelry and key chains out of washers. Styles look great on either gender. Check out the teen room display for samples. Techniques include mod podge, yarn wrapping, wire wrapping, hammered letters, bracelet and necklace techniques. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

FRIENDS BOOK SALE

Saturday, April 14th 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM The Friends book sales are held six times a year, generally, on the first Saturday of the month in the lower level meeting rooms. If you are a member of the Friends, you are also eligible to attend an “early bird” sale on the afternoon before the main book sales, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

Your child can read out loud to Sulley, a registered therapy dog, who loves children and does not shy away from hugs. D3-SWINGING SAFARI

Saturday, April 21st 2:30 PM Age Group: PRESCHOOL, ELEMENTARY (K-5TH GRADE) Take a journey through the jungle with drama activities, creative dance and drawing. Each creative section is 30 minutes. CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH TOM SMALL AND THE WILD ONES

Sunday, April 22nd 2:00PM Age Group: ADULTS Tom Small will join with some of the illustrators for his and Nancy Small’s book, Using Native Plants to Restore Community in Southwest Michigan and Beyond, to speak about the art of restoring the endangered native communities of plants, insects, and birds to our landscapes. The program will include an art exhibit of some of the 175 drawings, etchings, and woodcuts in the book. The book will be available for sale and a book signing and reception will follow the program. The event i s co-sponsored by Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Members of both organizations will be on hand to provide information about exciting spring and summer programs. No registration required.

Greater Journey by David McCullough Tuesday, April 24th 10:30 AM & repeated 7:00 PM Age Group: ADULTS Between 1830 and 1900, hundreds of Americans, including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Mark Twain, Samuel Morse, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, migrated to Paris. McCullough shows how their experiences in Paris helped shape American art, medicine, writing, science, and politics in profound ways when they returned to the United States. McCullough’s histories are well researched with intimate stories and connections that illuminate our history and knowledge of those who shaped it.
