Distribution The Library Events & Classes brochure is published on a monthly basis and includes library events, programs and new services for each month. The library has 20,000 copies printed and distributed through insertion in the Portage Hometown Gazette as well as copies available in the library. An online printable calendar of events and classes is available on the library website.


programs & events ANIMAL MAGIC, INC. Monday, August 1st 12:15 PM Location: CELERY FLATS HISTORICAL AREA Age Group: PRESCHOOL-5TH GRADE Nickelodeon’s 2010 Entertainer of the Year! This amazing high energy live animal show will feature both rare and endangered animals from almost every continent. It promises to teach you and entertain you. Please bring blankets for the grass in front of the Grain Elevator. (If you bring chairs you will be seated in the back.) A joint venture with the City of Portage Summer Entertainment Series. The rain location is located in the Barn at the Celery Flats Historical Area. No registration required. PORTAGE PARKS DISCOVERY SERIESGOING TO THE BOG Monday, August 1st 7:00 PM Location: SCHRIER PARK Age Group: ALL AGES Beyond the Schrier Park pavilions is a path that leads through the forest towards Bishop’s Bog, a gem of a park in Portage. Join Naturalist Dan Keto on a walk to the south border of Bishop’s Bog from Schrier Park. Discover seasonal highlights as we move from forest to bog. Observe the plants and animals that call this unique place home. These programs are

LITTLE ART HOUSE FAIRYTALE THEATER Tuesday, August 2nd 10:30 AM Age Group: PRESCHOOL-5TH GRADE You are invited to set sail on the sea of imagination and drift away to the island of fantasy. Join “The Little Art House” readers’ theater group as we rediscover two classic fairytales and create one of our own. There is sure to be plenty of audience participation. This event will be performed by local middle school students. No registration required. RECYCLED ART Tuesday, August 2nd 2:30 PM Age Group: MIDDLE SCHOOL Go green and create a cool piece of wearable or hang-able art using everything from metal washers to safety pins. PORTAGE PARKS DISCOVERY SERIES - LOOKING AT WILDLIFE Monday, August 8th 7:00 PM Location: LAKEVIEW PARK Age Group: ALL AGES When you walk with KNC Naturalist Dan Keto, you will see that Lakeview Park is more than just playgrounds, tennis courts, and pavilions. Take a walk on the wild side and see the park for its natural features: lakefront, wildflower plantings, insects, spiders, birds, and trees. ART ENCOUNTERS OF THE WORLDLY KIND Saturday, August 13th from 12:00 - 4:00 PM • Age Group: ALL AGES Art Encounters of the Worldly Kind is an art festival full of dance, performance art, music, interactive art, visual art from local artists topped off with an ice cream social. There is truly something for everyone. You can stroll down the trail to the smooth sound of the Matt Landon Jazz Trio followed by the lyric sounds of the Ginny Parnaby and Jennie Miller playing hammered dulcimer and Renaissance recorders and the rhythmic guitar music and vocals of Dennis Kreps. While on the trail, help dress a gargantuan gazook in chalk, decorate the trail in handmade peace flags and search for fairy houses. Back at Celery Flats experience the traditional and folk dances of the Middle East; connect to the powerful voices and poetry of Kinetic Affect; and tap your toes to the eclectic blends of blues, folk, and rock of the Hired Hands. Budding artists of all ages can create rubbings for a stupendous nature book art installation; fold and create a paper crane tree, design and fly paper airplanes while viewing the aerial “kite art” of Jim Ratliff and visit the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra Petting Zoo. The trail ends at Portage District Library with a performance by the Dunuya Drum and Dance Ensemble and an art exhibit and reception by the members of the Artists and Illustrators. This diverse group of artists uses different mediums and styles to showcase their talents while portraying different world cultures. Exhibit includes paintings, drawings, fiber art, mixed media and jewelry.
