programs & events GREAT GLASSBY: WORKS BY WEST MICHIGAN GLASS ART CENTER (WMGAC)
!UGUST ST 3EPTEMBER TH This glass art exhibit will include pieces by 2012 summer camp students and WMGAC members. In celebration of the Center’s tenth anniversary, members will offer a glass lampworking demonstration and will be available to explain other glass art techniques on Saturday, September 8th from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

Tuesday, September 4th PM !GE 'ROUP !$5,43 D.E. Johnson’s literary debut, a historical mystery entitled The Detroit Electric Scheme, was published in 2010 and won a 2011 Michigan Notable Book Award. The sequel, Motor City Shakedown, published September 2011, was called “extraordinarily vivid� by The New York Times, named as one of The House of Crime and Mystery’s Top 5 Crime Novels of 2011, and won a 2012 Michigan Notable Book Award. His third mystery in the series, Detroit Breakdown, continues to capture the highs and lows of Detroit in the early 1900’s. No registration required.

GREAT BOOKS READING & DISCUSSION GROUP PLANNING MEETING
3UNDAY 3EPTEMBER TH 0!GE 'ROUP !$5,43 This autumn you might consider joining in reading and discussing Great Conversations. That’s the title of the Great Books collection Great Conversations I, an anthology of 15 selections of literature from the ancient world to the 20th century. The initial meeting date is Sunday afternoon September 9th. The agenda will be set and agreed upon at that meeting. The anthology includes The Epic of Gilgamesh, a play by Aeschylus, selections from de Montaigne, Pascal, Emerson, Whitman, de Tocqueville, Ibsen, Freud, Jung, Joseph Conrad, Thorstein Veblen, Tillie Olsen, Alice Munro and Henri Poincare. Participants are asked to purchase the single volume anthology from Great Books Foundation for $24.95 (or, if able, to buy the same volume from some other source). 7EDNESDAY 3EPTEMBER TH 0!GE 'ROUP !$5,43 Join us in celebrating Susan Blackwell Ramsey’s new collection of poetry: A Mind Like This, winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. According to the Nebraska University Press: “This is a work of humor and wit, unexpectedly delightful and full of surprises as it reflects on the oddness of everyday life, the natural world, literary history, popular culture, and more.” Susan received her MFA from Notre Dame in 2008 and David Wagoner chose her poem “Pickled Heads, Saint Petersburg” for Best American Poetry, 2009. She currently teaches creative writing at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Books will be for sale. A book signing and reception will follow. No registration required.

POETRY READING IN FIFTEEN LANGUAGES (AND MORE): A SYMPHONY FOR THE SENSES
3UNDAY 3EPTEMBER TH 0- 0As a celebration of this community’s diversity, the Portage District Library and Foreign Languages Department of Western Michigan are collaborating to bring together area residents from fifteen different areas of the world to select a favorite poem or to write a poem to read in his/her language. We will have a list of languages and translations, but encourage the audience to sit back and let the rhythms; movement and intonations flow over them evoking personal feelings and meanings. Reception with foods from around the world will follow. No registration required.
