programs & events MONEY: GETTING TO KNOW YOU 4UESDAY /CTOBER ND s 0Age Group: ADULTS Using knowledge gained from Part One, we’ll look at how poor money manners affect our interaction with money. We’ll examine how our debt and spending-related patterns are behavioral or habitual in nature, and that the process for modifying any negative patterns starts with gaining insight into the factors that form and perpetuate our relationship with money. You’ll also learn how behavior and emotion-based assumptions about the financial markets may negatively affect how we make investmentrelated decisions with our money. The session concludes with three fundamental easy-to-follow concepts for building your net worth within the financial markets. The library will host a “Meet the Artist” reception on Sunday, November 4th from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. RESUME HACKS: A QUICK RESUME MAKEOVER &RIDAY /CTOBER TH s !Age Group: ALL AGES You have looked over some resume books, you have your resume together, and you don’t think you need a class—but it would be good to get somebody else’s opinion on this, particularly somebody knowledgeable. We can help! On the first Friday in February, take your lunch hour and come in. Bring your resume and we will look it over, especially with regard to proofreading, formatting, and language. Whether you are a family with a diagnosis, a caregiver, teacher, medical professional or interested community member, you probably have questions about autism. The Portage District Library will host a free public discussion on autism presented by Dr. Joshua Diehl on Tuesday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Portage Central High School Auditorium, 8135 S. Westnedge Ave., Portage, MI 49002. There will be a general discussion on what Autism Spectrum Disorders are and how they are diagnosed. There will also be a discussion on the approaches to treatment (research based vs. non-research based treatments) and new research findings in using robots or the iPad to help develop the social-communication skills in children with ASD. Getting S.M.A.R.T About Goal Setting & Spending 4UESDAY /CTOBER RD s 0Age Group: ADULTS Having a process for setting thoughtful and realistic goals and an active plan for guiding the spending decisions to achieve those goals is good money manners! It increases the probability of reaching our goals without getting derailed or experiencing unplanned negative consequences. In this third part of the series you’ll learn how to set goals using S.M.A.R.T criteria and develop a personal spending plan to meet those goals. Dr. Diehl, Assistant Professor of Psychology, is the Director of the F.U.N. Lab (For Understanding Neurodevelopment Laboratory) at the University of Notre Dame. The F.U.N. Lab research focuses on understanding and improving social-communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (including Asperger syndrome and PDD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders. This program is sponsored by the Portage District Library’s Grandmother and CIG Endowment Fund, which was established by a library-loving family who wanted to provide Portage youth and their families added opportunities above the library’s operating budget.
