MOTHER GOOSE STORYTIME Wednesdays, November 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM INFANT/TODDLER Enjoy this rewarding time with your child listening to stories, playing games, and participating in musical activities followed by a short playtime for infants through 23 months. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIME Mondays, November 7th, 14th, 21th, 28th Tuesdays, November 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th 10:30 AM Age Group: PRESCHOOL Preschool age children and their favorite adult will have a great time listening to stories, songs, dancing and just plain “kid fun”! NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

TIME FOR TWOS Thursdays, November 3rd, 10th, 17th 9:30 AM Age Group: Two Years Old Two year olds will enjoy this time with their favorite adult. Participants will experience stories, action rhymes, and dance/movement! Siblings under the age of two are welcome to join us.

SATURDAY STORIES Saturday, November 19th 10:00 AM Age Group: PRESCHOOL Join us for stories, sing songs, and dance the morning away! Stories are age appropriate for preschoolers. All are welcome. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Distribution The Library Events & Classes brochure is published on a monthly basis and includes library events, programs and new services for each month. The library has 20,000 copies printed and distributed through insertion in the Portage Hometown Gazette as well as copies available in the library. An online printable calendar of events and classes is available on the library website.


programs & events SBTDC: FISCAL FITNESS Tuesday, November 1st • 9:00 AM Small business owners with a financial history who wish to learn about how to use their financial statements to make informed business decisions will benefit from this workshop. Topics include: • Identifying problems using your balance sheet and income statement • Proven ways to increase your company’s cash flow • Using break even analysis to improve decision-making • Planning the working capital to support your growth • Keeping the banker on your side Registration is through the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center by calling 387-6004. COMBAT VETERANS’ WRITING GROUP Tuesday, November 1st • 6:30 PM Age Group: ADULTS This series of writing workshops for veterans focuses on short narratives about serving in the military during war time. No writing experience is necessary. This series is led by Margaret von Steinen, writer and communications officer for WMU’s Haenicke Institute for Global Education and runs the first and third Tuesday nights starting September 6th. That’s the title of the Great Books collection of 14 short stories on the so-called “deadly sins”, namely: Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust. The topic for November 6th is Sloth. THE JOURNEY OF GRIEF: COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS Thursday, November 10th • 6:30 PM Age Group: ADULTS This presentation offers information about the grief and loss cycle, the tasks of grief and what you can do to help yourself or someone you love who is grieving especially during the holidays. Speaker: Layla Jabboori, grief counselor for 17 years with Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. This program will include a tour of Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan’s new Oakland adult day and grief and loss center facility. Program location: 2255 West Centre, just west of Oakland Drive. ABC ACTIVITY TIME Friday, November 11th • 10:00 AM Age Group: PRESCHOOL Drop in playtime including sensory activities, fine and gross motor skills, pocket charts, manipulatives and more. Sunday, November 13th 2:00 PM -3:00 PM Age Group: ADULTS In 1986 Marie and her husband made their first visit to Russia, their lives were changed forever by their involvement in the Chernobyl nuclear event. They have continued to travel to Russia and interact with the Russian people for the past twenty-four years. Come join us as Marie Stoline reads from her book The Fire and the Gold, Russian Eldes Share Their Life Stories. Enjoy light refreshments and a look at Russian crafts. No registration required.

OPEN FOR DISCUSSION: A DROP-IN BOOK DISCUSSION Tuesday, November 15th 10:30 AM & repeated 7:00 PM Age Group: ADULTS The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon The Dressmaker of Khair Khana tells the incredible true story of Kamila Sidiqi who mobilized her community after the Taliban seized control of the city of Kabul. After receiving a teaching degree during the civil war — a rare achievement for any Afghan woman — Kamila was subsequently banned from school and confined to her home. When her father and brother were forced to flee the city, Kamila became the sole breadwinner for her five siblings. Armed only with grit and determination, she picked up a needle and thread and created a thriving business of her own. This is an unusually intimate and unsanitized look at the daily lives of women in Afghanistan. No registration is required.
