World Barista Forum

Expanding Barista Culture Globally Coffee-producing countries have long been supplying the world with the green beans that fuel specialty coffee cafes, inspire baristas, and delight consumers. Many producing countries enjoy little of the quality they produce, as the best coffees are exported to the North. Yet more and more, coffee-producing countries understand that learning these valueadding stages of coffee supply chain can be beneficial to their social and economic development. Sustainable Harvest brings together the world’s top baristas and barista coffee leadership because they possess unique abilities to help coffee-producing countries achieve extraordinary coffee culture. The World Barista Forum is a gathering of world-class baristas who want to give back to coffee origins. We invite you to the tropical jungle in the coffee lands of Northern Peru to help baristas make a positive difference in the lives of coffee producers.

The Purpose In October 2010 in northern Peru, Sustainable Harvest will assemble more than two dozen internationalchampion baristas in a summit focused on best practices in promoting barista culture worldwide. Representing 15 different countries, the baristas at the World Barista Forum will develop concrete strategies for cultivating the field of professional coffee preparation in producing countries. Supporting the development of barista culture in producing countries can boost specialty coffee’s image as a national product and increase internal demand for high-quality coffee. This can improve the lives of coffee producers and those who create delicious coffee beverages. Sustainable Harvest’s purpose in assembling this talented group of individuals is to build strong relationships between the world’s top baristas and aspiring baristas from producing countries. By working together, they can generate new strategies to bring specialty coffee barista culture to the countries where coffee is grown.

Goals of the World Barista Forum: • Create an international community of baristas that encourages peer-to-peer exchanges and training. • Produce a plan of action to expand barista culture at origin. • Formulate ideas for fellowships, training center activities, new collaborations. • Explore potential sources of funding.

The Oro Verde Cooperative Lamas, Peru

Lima, Peru

Established in 1999, the Oro Verde Cooperative represents 22 distinct coffee-producing communities and 14 cacao-producing communities in northwestern Peru, in the state of San Martin. Oro Verdeʼs production zones are in the Peruvian regions of Lamas, Picota, San Martin, and El Dorado. The region is one of the most beautiful in Peru and has the highest forest biodiversity in the country. It is also home to wild boar, peccary, deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds. In the dry season, the climate averages 25°C (77°F) and during the rainy season it lowers to an average of 14°C (52°F). Oro Verde puts its Fair Trade premiums towards reforestation and nurseries to grow shade trees and lumber trees. Premiums also purchase medical supplies for the community health centers, and technical assistance and agronomy training for its producer members.

The Introductions Format for World Barista Forum 15 slides shown with narration for 20 seconds each, help us understand more about the “coffee life” of World Barista Forum participants. Dear World Barista Forum participant, To ensure lively interactions and include as many people in the program as possible, we have designed the "15 slides x 20 seconds" presentation format, in which each person shows 15 images (or slides) that are shown for just 20 seconds each. The idea is for each presenter to showcase their work in a short, visual, and engaging way. Following the 15 x 20 presentations, we are able to know each otherʼs work just a little bit better, which comes through in the conversations that are inspired from these 15 x 20 presentations. Please be creative in selecting your 15 slides, as they should share an important part of your lifeʼs work and the things that define you, your company, and your approach to coffee and culture. Please send us the slides in advance, (email them as a JPEG, or put in PowerPoint, Keynote, or other photo image file format. If you get them to us in advance, we can set them up on our master computer to allow set up for each presenter. Pick 15 pictures from your photo library now, and send them to me in an email....donʼt delay, this is an easy thing to get finished right away. Sincerely, David Griswold An example of what to send, here are 15 slides that could help me describe parts of my coffee life in Portland, Oregon.
