Annual Report 2016
Port Discovery is Committed... Mission As the premier children’s museum in the mid-Atlantic, Port Discovery Children’s Museum educates children and inspires life-long curiosity. Our play-to-learn philosophy opens the door for children to discover and explore the world around them and to lead smarter, healthier, more engaged lives.
Dear Friends, Port Discovery thrives on a very special audience. It’s a group that has a story. They may not be able to articulate it yet, but when they step through our doors we see them flourish. They may not yet see how they are part of our community, but when they enter Port Discovery’s world they know they’re accepted. Renowned educator Neil Postman once wrote that “children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” Port Discovery recently broke ground with a new program for the youngest and most medically vulnerable of these living messages: infants in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. Read on in the pages of this report to learn more about this innovative project and other ways that we have been inspiring curiosity and wonder in all children beginning at birth. Let’s keep growing a Port Discovery that will benefit all of the future generations who will live, work, and raise their families in our community. All of this work is made possible by you— thank you for supporting our mission every day. Hope to see you here soon! Sincerely, Bryn Parchman Dennis F. Rasmussen President & CEO Chair of the Board of Directors

A Groundbreaking Early Childhood Program Port Discovery is bringing the power of play to the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital (UMCH) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Museum and early childhood expert Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen have teamed up—with special support from UMCH—to develop new ways to promote parent-child bonding and infant literacy development. The program, Mother Goose on the Loose: Goslings, helps parents navigate and respond to the developmental and emotional needs of their child in a difficult setting. During a one-hour Goslings session at UMCH, parents learn how best to engage their premature or medically fragile infant through activities that combine talking, singing, reading, and playing.
“He was born at 29-and-a-half weeks; two pounds, tenand-a-half ounces. I had no idea what he could or could not do, being so small.” -NICU Mom “It’s a parent workshop with singing, rhyming, and chanting—that really stimulates a child’s brain a little bit beyond talking.” -Summer Rosswog, Port Discovery’s Early Childhood and Literacy Specialist 4
“While the infant’s brain is developing— and we want to enrich that—we also have to know, when is it too much? When is it a day that maybe he or she is better off just resting?” -Dr. Brenda Hussey-Gardner, University of Maryland Children’s Hospital After participating in Goslings, one family began to pay closer attention to their son’s behavioral signals when they visited the NICU. They soon realized that well-meaning stroking and talking was sometimes too much for their baby, and immediately changed their approach based on what they learned during the group session. Parents are welcome to attend multiple sessions, and each NICU family receives a kit that includes developmentally appropriate toys, a special “indestructible” children’s book, and a link to download an album of sing-alongs recorded especially for Goslings. A huge thank you to the PNC Foundation and the Herbert Bearman Foundation for championing this project and providing essential funding support.
“I learned a lot to watch for, to tell me what type of day that she was having. I was seeing those signals before, like her being alert, or her telling me that she wanted to be left alone. But now I can know better what it means and how to deal with it.” -NICU Mom

A Place of Creativity... Recognition: Port Discovery was named as one of the 10 Best Children’s Museums in the U.S. by Fodor’s Travel, selected as one of 25 Best American Children’s Museums by Early Childhood Education Zone, ranked among the 10 Best Museums for Kids by Tripping, and included in the Red Tricycle list of 15 Best Children’s Museums for Indoor Play.
Mrs. Yumi Hogan, Maryland’s First Lady, visits Port Discovery for a ribbon cutting
STEM Learning: Port Discovery was awarded an Explore Science Kit by the National Informal STEM Educators (NISE) Network as part of a Museum and Community Partnerships initiative. Museum staff used the award to create a new partnership with an area after school program and delivered a brand new version of Port Discovery’s Nanoscience Exposed enrichment series designed to keep children productively engaged during out-ofschool time. Visiting Exhibits: Fiscal year 2016 was bookended by two dynamic visiting exhibits: LEGO® Castle Adventure, featuring amazing medieval-themed LEGO constructions, and Heart and Seoul: Growing up in Korea, inviting visitors to “travel” to South Korea and experience some of the country’s sights, sounds, and customs from a child’s perspective. Play It Forward 2016: We were proud to honor Coach John Harbaugh and Lenny “Batman” Robinson (1963-2015) with Port Discovery’s 2016 Great Friend to Kids award. John’s perseverance, positive attitude, and unyielding support for his players during both good and bad times align with the character traits we impart on the “playing field” of our Museum every day. The words that Lenny lived by, “At the end of the day, did I make a difference? I hope the answer is always yes,” will forever inspire children and adults to live his legacy and help make a positive difference in the lives of others.
