SOUTH COAST SHUTTLE SCHEDULES
Three routes are part of the South Coast Shuttle to take residents and visitors to Port Dover, Long Point & Simcoe.
TOP STOPS THROUGHOUT NORFOLK COUNTY Whether you drive yourself or take a trip on the shuttle there are many things to see and do in Norfolk County. Explore the many wonders and discover Norfolk.
On weekends from mid-May to September 25, 2016, Ride Norfolk operates the South Coast Shuttle Bus Service connecting Port Dover, Vittoria, Normandale, Simcoe, Turkey Point, Port Rowan and Long Point. Three buses will operate on three routes with Turkey Point as the transfer location. Fares: Adults: In Town one way – $2, Day Pass $8. Riders may receive transfer for making multiple stops going one way. Multi Ride Pass – $25 ($30 Value). Children ages 5 and under – free. NORFOLK COUNTY FAIR & HORSE SHOW South Drive, Simcoe Make plans to visit the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show from October 4th to 10th. In its 176th year and the fourth largest fair in Ontario, Norfolk County Fair features agricultural displays, craft exhibits, food vendors, art shows, talent competitions, midway rides, and celebrity chefs. Each year, star performers entertain at the grandstand. You will see horses and ponies, sheep, cattle, poultry and much more. Norfolk County Fair in Simcoe is ranked among the province’s top events to visit. A special treat on Wed., August 31 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and their Musical Ride with 32 horses and riders will put on a show in front of the grandstand at Norfolk County Fairgrounds. It will be part of the new “Food & Fun Fest” and feature gourmet food trucks, a Kids Zone, pony rides and interactive community displays. 2970 Swimming Pool Rd., LaSalette Ramblin’ Road is Ontario’s first and only Brewery Farm, located just south of La Salette. This place can be a little hard to find but once there, you’ll see a working farm with crops growing, a hop garden flourishing and plenty of activity. LYNN VALLEY TRAIL Simcoe to Port Dover The Lynn Valley Trail is located on the former CNR rail line established along the pioneer river trail in 1873 as the Lake Huron and Port Dover Railway. The rail line was abandoned in 1988. The trail runs from Simcoe to Port Dover with a convenient mid-way entry points to the trail at Blueline Road and St. John’s Road. SIMCOE HISTORY
Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe’s visit in 1795 led to a grant to Aaron Culver. By 1812 a hamlet had formed. In 1819-23 Culver laid out a village which he named “Simcoe” and a post office opened in 1829. Streets were surveyed in 1835-36, a court-house and gaol built, and Simcoe was made the seat of the new Talbot District in 1837. Shown above is the present Norfolk County Administration Building.

37 Evergreen Hill Road, Simcoe Jensen Cheese is an award winning cheddar cheese manufacturer with its head office and storage facility located in Simcoe and its factory located in Wilton, Ontario. The third generation family run business specializes in artisan crafted fine cheddar that is aged in underground storages. Cheddar is held up to five years, and sometimes older. The no nonsense approach to manufacturing laid out by patriarch and master cheese maker Arne Jensen in 1925 carries on to today. Jensen Cheese manufactures a variety of cheese that includes Colby, marble, specialty Brick, Cheddar and have recently introduced a three year aged smoked cheddar.

NORFOLK CARILLON TOWER
Norfolk St. North The Norfolk Carillon Tower was built as Norfolk’s war memorial and offers concerts during the summer. Located on Norfolk Street North in Simcoe’s downtown park system along the Lynn River, the carillon was dedicated on June 17, 1925. The Norman architectural style stone tower is 60 feet high and contains 23 bells. The heaviest bells is 1,568 lbs, the smallest is 60 lbs. The total bells’ weight is 8,561 pounds. Coordinated by the County Carillonneur—Jim Nicholls—22 volunteers play nine months of the year on a regular basis. Discover Norfolk | 2016 23

Owner Rick Posavad plans to transfer the business in stages to the large brick church a block west at the corner of Lamport Street and Murray Street East. Vittoria Baptist Church, founded in 1803, was one of the oldest Baptist churches in Norfolk.
SPOOKY HOLLOW Spooky Hollow Road Turning off Highway 24 towards Normandale, the scenery changes from pleasant farms to a dramatic kilometre stretch through forest where the road dips and turns. There are several legends about Spooky Hollow involving mysterious deaths in the area.

VITTORIA TOWN HALL The solid brick building in central Vittoria was constructed in early 1800s on land known as Court House Square. Today it is known as Vittoria Town Hall being a modern multipurpose structure. In 2008 the Accessibility Project was a co-operative effort of local and other government agencies, community organizations and volunteers who together created a modern facility.
TURKEY POINT HISTORY As early as 1798, Lieutenant Governor
Simcoe planned to fortify this point. By 1813 nothing had yet been done, and following Procter’s retreat from Amherstburg the British decided to construct a navy yard and covering fort here. Difficulties in supplying the post, together with what was considered the unsuitability of the location led to abandonment of the project after only a blockhouse and part of a palisade had been built. BIRD STUDIES CANADA 115 Front Road, Port Rowan Bird Studies Canada is Canada’s leading charitable organization dedicated to bird science and conservation. Its headquarters and National Research Centre is located in Port Rowan. Bird Studies Canada’s educational programs combine research, Citizen Science, mentoring, school programs, public events and workshops to provide engaging experiences that foster awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of birds and nature. Its proximity to Long Point, a major bird flight-path, and World Biosphere Reserve, makes Port Rowan a popular destination for bird-watchers.
Located within a designated World Biosphere Reserve, Long Point Provincial Park has over 1.5 km of sandy Lake Erie beach. Excellent fishing and boating opportunities await! A great “get back to nature” spot! The “Old Park” is located at the original site of Long Point Provincial Park and founded in 1921. The Old Park, also known as Cottonwood campground, offers 81 camp sites and beach access and is at the west end stop for the South Coast Shuttle.
POTTAHAWK PARTY What has become ‘Canada’s biggest boat party’ takes place every year on the second Sunday of July when over 2,000 boats and some 10,000 people head to Pottahawk Point -located in an isolated spot of Long Point Bay. Often called the “Pottahawk Pissup” it can be described as a day long “mardi-gras” like party on the water. It is free to attend and has no formal organization. It’s all about enjoying the summer, boating, getting wet and living life to the fullest! But do so responsibly.... the OPP, Canada Coast Guard and other authorities patrol on the water and on land.
NORMANDALE FISH HATCHERY Turkey Point Road, 519-426-3142 Normandale Fish Culture Station is the oldest fish culture station in Ontario. The original main station was built in 1924. The advance-rearing building was added in 1984. The sub-station was built in 1934 nearby on Front Road. The Ontario government has rebuilt the stations into state-of-the-art facilities. LONG POINT Cross the Causeway from Port Rowan for a visit to Long Point. Look for the eco-passages along the Causeway that allow wildlife to safely pass. Long Point is about 40 kilometres long and a kilometre across at its widest point. While most of Long Point remains in its natural state, a friendly tourist area welcomes visitors to explore and enjoy.

Under the leadership of Frank Newman, the St. Williams Forestry Station became the model reforestation and tree seedling production site in the province. It became a showcase and teaching facility as well as a 4,000 acre demonstration forest. Today, a private company leases the Ministry land that was once Canada’s First Forestry Station.

CANADA’S FIRST FORESTRY STATION
885 Highway #24 Our pioneer forefathers were faced with deeply forested, impenetrable bush land when they arrived in this area. By law they had to clear their free land and farm it. The sandy topsoil of this region blew away in the wind without plant or forest cover. Within 50 years, parts of Norfolk County were desert.
Stop and enjoy the unique vibe that is Port Rowan. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the many interesting shops along Bay Street. You can also dock your boat at the waterfront before exploring the community. Friendly Port Rowan is rich with history and is always worth a visit.

BOATING
