Every weekend from May 19 to September 30, 2018, Ride Norfolk operates the South Coast Shuttle Bus service connecting Port Dover, Simcoe, Normandale, Turkey Point, Port Rowan and Long Point. Three buses operate on three routes with transfers at Burning Kiln Winery. South Coast Shuttle 2018 fares: Adults: Day Pass $8 allows unlimited rides and stops in one day. 2 TURKEY POINT u Originally settled in 1973, Turkey Point was later named for the abundance of wild turkeys that nested there. Today, two miles of wide open sandy beach offers swimming for all ages. Fishing, hiking, water sports and golfing are all readily available for visitors in Turkey Point. The beach hamlet, which is home to few year round residents, has a variety of restaurants and businesses, as well as parks to enjoy.

u 3 NORMANDALE CENTURY INN 2326 Front Rd, Normandale Built in 1875 by John Dey Post, the Normandale Century Inn remained a general store until 1996 when current owners Hans and Brenda expanded the business to include an inn and restaurant. The licensed dining room and patio are open daily in summer. The restaurant serves delicious local country cuisine. The inn also has five rooms and include a nice continental breakfast with all bookings.

PROVINCIAL PARK 350 Erie Boulevard Located within a designated World Biosphere Reserve, Long Point Provincial Park has over 1.5 km of sandy Lake Erie beach. Excellent fishing and boating opportunities await! A great “get back to nature” spot! The “Old Park” is located at the original site of Long Point Provincial Park and founded in 1921. The Old Park, also known as Cottonwood campground, offers 81 camp sites and beach access and is at the west end stop for the South Coast Shuttle.

PORT DOVER LIFT BRIDGE The lift bridge over the Lynn River is bridge number five in about 150 years. The spans are raised by an operator on the hour and half hour for pleasure boats and on demand for commercial boats.

PORT DOVER HARBOUR MUSEUM 44 Harbour St., Port Dover Commercial fishing, tall ships, rum-runners and Lake Erie shipwrecks. Part of the museum is an original fisherman’s net shanty. Galleries present exhibits on the days of commercial sail as well as Lake Erie shipwrecks including The Atlantic, ship building, rum running, and other aspects of lakeside life. The 1932 fish tug Almidart can be seen outside the museum along with the new engine display.

The intersection of Walker and Main Streets marks Port Dover waterfront area. Although busy all year, it attracts crowds of visitors during the summer months. Within the area is the popular sandy beach. It also is the centre for commercial fishing, maritime services and pleasure boaters. Walker Street is one of two main shopping streets in Port Dover. Along with Main Street, you’ll find great shopping and eating along Port Dover’s Walker Street which is only a few blocks long and ends right at the beach.

On the West Pier The lighthouse on the west pier is a recognized Heritage Building now owned by Norfolk County. The lighthouse is one of the oldest examples in Ontario of the square wooden lighthouse buildings from preConfederation. A walk along the pier to the lighthouse is a ‘must do’ while in Port Dover. The lighthouse is Port Dover’s most photographed building.

CROSS OF 1669 EXPLORERS Brown St., Port Dover The granite cross on its lofty site overlooks the bascule bridge. Unveiled in 1922, its bronze plaques tell the story of two Jesuits, Dollier and Galinee with seven voyageurs, who set out from Quebec on an attempt to find the Mississippi River. The first Europeans to visit this area claimed the land for King Louis XIV of France. The group wintered along the creek. A cairn and small park on DonJon Blvd marks their wintering site.

On May 14, 1814, about 800 American regulars and militia disembarked at the mouth of the Lynn River. The following day, meeting no opposition, they burnt the settlement of Dover and ravaged the surrounding countryside. Private dwellings were destroyed and livestock slaughtered. Local folklore says one house was spared that fed the soldiers.

LYNN VALLEY TRAIL Port Dover to Simcoe

The Lynn Valley Trail goes from Port Dover to Simcoe. This May marked the 25th anniversary of the Trail located on a former CNR rail line. Before the CNR, the Lake Huron and Port Dover Railway followed a pioneer river trail. The rail line was abandoned in 1988 and purchased as a potential utilities corridor in 1991. The Lynn Valley Trail Association was formed to promote hiking and cycling. In May 1993, Lynn Valley Trail was officially opened. The trail is owned by Norfolk County. 20 Discover Norfolk | 2018

Norfolk St. North The Carillon Tower is Norfolk’s war memorial and offers concerts during the summer. Located in Simcoe’s beautiful downtown park system along the Lynn River, the carillon was dedicated in 1925. The stone tower is 60 feet high and contains 23 bells from 1,568 lbs. to 60 lbs. The total bells’ weight is 8,561 pounds.

VITTORIA: THE DISTRICT CAPITAL 1815-1825 Lamport Street In 1800 the London District was formed and justices of the peace with administrative and judicial powers were appointed. In 1815 the courts, then held at Charlotteville (Turkey Point) were moved to Tisdale’s Mills (Vittoria). Here a committee consisting of John Backhouse, Thomas Talbot and Robert Nichol was named to supervise the construction of a court-house and jail. This building was used both by the courts and for occasional religious services until destroyed by fire in 1825. In the following year the district capital was moved to London. The tranquil village of Vittoria has a long heritage. In the early 1800s it was an important settlement and the hub of the Long Point Settlement. Visit the 19th century Vittoria Town Hall. Christ Anglican Church’s cornerstone was laid in 1844 and cleverly built of Norfolk County pine to resemble stone. Former Vittoria Baptist Church dates to 1803 and St. Andrew’s United Church dates to 1818.

There are miles of sandy beaches in Norfolk County from Port Dover to Turkey Point to Long Point. Take time to discover them along with the communities and businesses nearby. Shown above is Long Point beach.

Our pioneer forefathers were faced with deeply forested bush land when they arrived in this area. By law they had to clear their free land and farm it. The sandy topsoil of this region blew away in the wind without plant or forest cover. Within 50 years, parts of Norfolk County were desert. Under the leadership of Frank Newman, the St. Williams Forestry Station became the model reforestation and tree seedling production site in the province. It became a showcase and teaching facility as well as a 4,000 acre demonstration forest. Today, a private company leases the land that was once Canada’s First Forestry Station but you can still visit and see the history of the site at 885 Hwy. 24 South.

BACKUS MILL 1267 Second Concession Rd., Port Rowan Step back in time to the pioneer past at Backus Heritage Village. Step inside the 1798 Backhouse Mill National Historic Site and see how stone ground flour was produced more than 200 years ago. It’s a short walk over the bridge to the rest of the Heritage Village including a rare octagonal school house and a country church. The Backus family homestead, garage and playhouse are original buildings to the site. The Education Centre at Backus is also worth a visit.

BIRD STUDIES CANADA 115 Front Road, Port Rowan Bird Studies Canada is Canada’s leading charitable organization dedicated to bird science and conservation. Its headquarters and National Research Centre is located in Port Rowan. Bird Studies Canada’s educational programs combine research, Citizen Science, mentoring, school programs, public events and workshops to provide engaging experiences that foster awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of birds and nature. Its proximity to Long Point, a major bird flight-path, and World Biosphere Reserve, makes Port Rowan a popular destination for bird-watchers.

TURKEY POINT HISTORY As early as 1798, Lieutenant Governor Simcoe planned to fortify Turkey Point. By 1813 nothing had yet been done, and following Procter’s retreat from Amherstburg the British decided to construct a navy yard and covering fort here. Difficulties in supplying the post, together with what was considered the unsuitability of the location led to abandonment of the project after only a blockhouse and part of a palisade had been built. Today, Turkey Point is a popular destination in the summer for boaters, campers, cottagers, beach-goers and daytrippers. Everyone enjoys a day at Turkey Point.

Long Point is about 40 kilometres long and a kilometre across at its widest point. Lake Erie lies to the south and Long Point Bay lies on the north side. Most of Long Point remains in its natural state and is noted worldwide as a place of ecological importance. Long Point has large tracts of Carolinian forests and is home to many unique plants and animals. Hundreds of thousands of migrating birds pass through Long Point each fall and spring, and many bird species nest on the point. With large provincial campgrounds and a beautiful beach, Long Point is a perfect destination for any summer visitor.

POTTAHAWK PARTY What has become ‘Canada’s biggest boat party’ takes place every year on the second Sunday of July when over 2,000 boats and some 10,000 people head to Pottahawk Point -- located in an isolated spot of Long Point Bay. The event can be described as a day long “mardi-gras” style party on the water. It is free to attend and has no formal organization. It’s all about enjoying the summer, boating, getting wet and living life to the fullest! But do so responsibly... the OPP, Canada Coast Guard and other authorities patrol on the water and on land.

SPOOKY HOLLOW Spooky Hollow Road Turning off Highway 24 towards Normandale, the scenery changes from pleasant farms to a dramatic kilometre stretch winding through forest where the road dips and turns. There are several local legends about Spooky Hollow that involve mysterious deaths. Still, it is an enchanting drive on a summer day.

WATERFORD HISTORY Settlement of Townsend Township began in 1794 and within six years Paul Averill was operating saw and grist-mills on Nanticoke Creek. The community was called Waterford when a post-office opened around 1826. Located in a rich agricultural and lumbering region, the opening of a Canada Southern Railway station in 1871 facilitated its growth and the village was incorporated in 1878. Today, Waterford is home to tree-lined streets, stately heritage homes, welcoming shops, restaurants and businesses. The Spruce Row Museum provides exhibits highlighting the agricultural heritage. Waterford Lakes are popular for swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking. The Waterford Deer Park is also a popular spot for families. There are events throughout the year.

WATERFORD OLD TOWN HALL 76 Main St. South, Waterford The Old Town Hall has been in the centre of Waterford since 1902. It is an integral part of the community’s heritage and identity. The historic building is used for concerts, art exhibitions, acting classes, day camps, yoga and many other activities. As was reported when the building opened “the second floor consists of one large hall and is entered from a spacious stairway of three landings starting near the main entrance. At the back of the hall the seats are raised.”

TILLSONBURG FLYING SCHOOL 244411 Airport Rd., Tillsonburg Take a one hour flight over the Long Point ecosystem from Tillsonburg to Port Rowan and out over Long Point Inner Bay, then back along the shore of Lake Erie over the Lake Erie Wind Farm to Port Burwell around the sub over to Aylmer then returning back to Tillsonburg. This flight is a one hour long adventure that will be remembered for years.
