WELCOME TO PORT DOVER

Warm welcome to Port Dover

Whether it’s your first visit to Port Dover or you’ve been here many times, you’re sure to find a friendly welcome. Port Doverites have been welcoming visitors for over a century and we like to think of ourselves as cordial, welcoming hosts. Stroll along our downtown streets and check out every store. Explore our town’s many attractions including the museum and professional summer theatre. Port Dover has a wide choice of restaurants serving excellent food that will keep you coming back again and again. Whether you plan to visit Port Dover for a day or a week, or longer, you will receive a warm welcome. For sure, Port

Dover is small enough that we suggest you park your car and strike out to see what makes our town so special all year. New this year is an accessibility mat on the sand to allow people with reduced mobility enjoyment of the beach. Port Dover’s stores and boutique shops are legendary for their clothing, giftware, arts, crafts of every description, souvenirs and so much more. Most local businesses remain open all year. Think about coming back and enjoying our community at any time of the year. Please come again, and often -- you’re always welcome.

Special thanks to Earl Hartlen www.earlhartlen.com for the cover photo and many of the photographs in this magazine.

GREAT FOOD

The Erie Beach Hotel provides great food & hospitality for everyone.

Erie Beach Hotel is a Port Dover tradition

YOUR HOST Andrew Schneider and his wife Pam own and operate the Erie Beach Hotel. They follow in the footsteps of Andrew’s father and mother Tony and Betty Schneider and his grandparents Harold and Marjorie Schneider who purchased the Erie Beach Hotel in 1946. Three generations have made the hotel famous for great food and hospitality for 70 years.

The popularity of the landmark Erie Beach Hotel on Walker Street is about hospitality and great food. For three generations the Schneider family has perfected the way to cook fresh Lake Erie perch … it is a matter of great pride with them. The Cove Room on the main floor is open daily year-round with a full menu of tempting choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The salad cart that is brought to each table offers specialty salads and pickled treats. Mouth watering celery bread is a traditional favourite.

The Cove Room, shown below left, has undergone a stylish new look with its beach and lake motifs creating a welcoming ambience. Pub-style dining at The Terrace Room on the upper level is the gathering place by the jug-of-beer and platter of fish crowd. The Terrace Room serves

a wide menu of favourite foods from noon until late night in pleasant surroundings and is open to all ages. Whether it’s dinner out, a family gathering or a business meeting, Andrew and Pam Schneider of The Erie Beach Hotel can accommodate many groups in a number of dining rooms.

The Arbor for a hot dog and Golden Glow

TM

The famous Arbor has been a Port Dover landmark for almost a century. The Arbor is the home of Golden Glow fruit drinks and Ritz Red Hots (foot-long hot dogs), hamburgers, fries and ice cream treats. Tony Schneider and staff continue the traditions as patrons dress up their Red Hots and hamburgers with a wide selection of homemade condiments. Just across Main Street is Arbortown Mini Golf that provides children and adults 18-holes of fun.

GETTING AROUND   RIVER CRUISES

Enjoy Knechtel family hospitality

PALM TREES ON PORT DOVER BEACH

Each summer real palm trees sway in the warm breezes of Port Dover beach thanks to the Knechtel family. This year the five trees were shipped direct from Fort Myers, Florida to Port Dover for planting in May along the deck of The Beach House Restaurant.

In 1959 Fred Knechtel began running a food concession for Don Ivey on Walker Street near the beach. A couple of years later the entrepreneur purchased what was then a fish and chips and chicken place known as ‘Scotty’s’. At that same time he also managed the Port Dover Dairy Bar on Main Street. Eventually, Fred and his wife Betty purchased the ‘Dover Dairy Bar’ to become full-time, year-round restaurateurs. Today, the family business has expanded and are some of this community’s best-run businesses. Today, all five of Fred and Betty’s children continue the family traditions. Son David and daughter Diane (Natte) run Knechtel Foods Ltd. and the Dover Dairy Bar. Daughter Wendy operates the upbeat retail clothing store Surf Shop neighbouring Knechtel Foods

Bar & Restaurant that came under the family umbrella in 1985. Son Peter oversees ‘The Beach House’ restaurant right on the beach with live palm trees growing in front of the popular patio. Around the corner on St. George Street, Wendy also operates the well-stocked retail gift store ‘Grand Trunk Station’ that really was the Port Dover train station, moved to this site in 1998. Now, the third generation of the Knechtel families are helping in the family businesses.

WELCOME TO PORT DOVER

SOME OF THE MANY THINGS TO DO IN PORT DOVER There are many attractions at Port Dover’s harbourfront. Besides all the obvious activities -- swimming, boating, fishing or enjoying the varied menus of Port Dover foods -- here is a list of a few more things to do in and around Port Dover. o “River Rider” boat cruises last about one hour along Lynn River and Black Creek daily in the summer. o Just a couple miles from the beach is “Frisky Beaver Winery” at 138 Tisdale Road and with their new building now open worth seeing. o Visit the Tall Ships when they come to port. o A brand new attraction to try out is “Radical Lines Aerial Adventure Park” at 321 Radical Road with aerial challenges, zip lines, suspension bridges, Tarzan swings and more. A couple miles west on Nelson Street to Radical Road.

o “Sea Doo” personal water crafts for rent or stand up paddle boards. o Watch power boats as they pass by the pier, or every Wednesday night in the summer local sailboats hold a race just off shore. o If your own fishing doesn’t turn out so well, visit the fresh fish shop across the river where the tugs moor and get it fresh from the tugs. o Watch the sun rise or set daily. o People watching can also be fun.

o Fishing from the government piers at Port Dover’s waterfront can be productive … and it’s great fun, for sure. Lake Erie’s fish population has many species and the mouth of the Lynn River -- Port Dover harbour -- supports varied types of popular sports fish. The fish are there but for the best “luck” in landing your dinner many “experts” say you’ve got to get up early. o Stand-Up Paddle Boards can be rented in the beach area and offer a chance to get out on the water for fun and a little bit of exercise.

BUILDING IN PORT DOVER

Eggink Homes at Silver Lake Estates in quiet and scenic neighbourhoods

CROSS LAKE FERRY In the 1920s, the Nicholson ErieDover Ferry Line crossed Lake Erie with cars and passengers between Erie, PA and Port Dover. Cars coming off a ferry are lined up in photo above. The service continued until 1931. The Nicholson line used three ships, ‘Erie”, ‘Dover’, and ‘Keystone’. In 1929 the Keystone came close to disaster when its engines failed in heavy seas and almost went aground on the tip of Long Point. Several fish tugs safely towed it back to Port Dover.

Over 15 years ago, Eggink Homes Inc. began development along the town’s northern edge, initially building new homes on 52 lots in Inglewood Estates’ on the east side of Cockshutt Road. With the success of that development, in 2005 the family-owned business under the guidance of President George Eggink, began construction of ‘Silver Lake Estates’ located on the west side of Cockshutt Road. Five phases later, 131 homes have been completed (21 in Phase 1, 41 in Phase 2, 32 in Phase 3, and 31 in Phase 4). Construction is nearing completion in Phase 4. Eggink Homes opened Phase 5 last fall and it is already sold out. The company also includes George’s wife Betty and their son Tyler. Eggink Homes Inc. is planning to open Silver Lake Estates - Phase 6 - late summer/early fall 2017. It consists of 28 lots. New model homes currently located on Maple Ave. feature architectural designs and plans for houses that can be built on sites in Phase 6. Lots to see at the Port Dover Harbour Museum along the river.

PORT DOVER HARBOUR MUSEUM Port Dover has a long and colourful history. Bring some of the community’s marine history alive with a visit to the Port Dover Harbour Museum. Explore the displays and learn about the town’s past. The Port Dover Harbour Museum is partially

housed in an original fisherman’s net shanty. This section is dedicated to the history of Port Dover’s commercial fishing industry, which continues to be an important part of local life. Permanent galleries present exhibits on the days of commercial sail as well as Lake Erie shipwrecks, ship building, Long Point, rum running, and other aspects of lakeside life in this unique community. Outdoor attractions include the 1932 fishtug Almidart, a 1912 lake-freighter wheelhouse, and access to the river along our picturesque wooden dock. Since 2002, the museum has been the home to a major collection of artifacts from the 1852 wreck of the Steamer Atlantic near Long Point.

RIVERFRONT PARK Next to Port Dover Harbour Museum is the new Riverfront Park. Officially opened in June 2016, the park features floating docks for boaters and lots of benches to sit and relax. A walkway along the river is planned to extend from the lift bridge to the lighthouse.

Sailboat races organized by Port Dover Yacht Club take place in Lake Erie’s Long Point Bay off Port Dover pier every Wednesday night from June to the end of September. Boats usually leave the harbour about 6 p.m. for the races that start at 7 p.m. about one mile off shore. In June and September, there are also races on Monday nights. As well, there is a summer Sailing School with week-long courses based out of the Port Dover Harbour Marina. See www.pdycsailingschool.com for information.

Explore the 10 km Lynn Valley Trail between Port Dover and Simcoe The Lynn Valley Trail is located on the former CNR rail line established in 1873 and abandoned in 1988. The rail line was purchased as a potential utilities corridor by the municipality in 1991. The 10 km trail connects Simcoe and Port Dover. The Lynn Valley Trail starts at Silver Lake Park in Port Dover and passes through a number of different habitats including mixed woods, wetlands, open grassland and agricultural land, all along the scenic Lynn River on the route to Simcoe.

Interesting examples of Carolinian flora and fauna may be found along the trail. The Lynn Valley Trail Association has done extensive work on the rail-trail since its establishment in 1993. There are four original trestle bridges which have been reinforced and decking and railings built. Benches, picnic tables, portable washroom, fencing and signage have made the trail comfortable for walking, hiking, cycling or nature study. PORT DOVER NEWS

Port Dover Maple Leaf delivers the news for Port Dover residents

STREET SIGNS NAUTICAL MESSAGE Look closely at the street signs in downtown Port Dover and they have a series of nautical flags across the bottom that spell out “Port Dover” twice.

Port Dover Maple Leaf is the community’s newspaper. The paper has published the news for Port Dover residents every week since 1873. Telling the stories of the people and events of this town has always been the paper’s focus. There have been a lot of changes in the community over the years. But some things have remained constant -- the community-minded spirit of Port Dover citizens and The Maple Leaf ’s desire to publish a newspaper that reflects the community. Credit for establishing The Maple Leaf goes to Mr. E. D. Passmore. After chronicling the local news for nine years he sold the newspaper in 1882 to Llewelyn G. Morgan, a former high school teacher.

Sam H. Morris, a printer and reporter on staff, succeeded Publisher Morgan on Friday, February 13, 1920. His employment at the newspaper had been interrupted by World War One when he enlisted in Norfolk’s own battalion, the 133rd, and saw action in Europe. Shortly after his return to Port Dover, he purchased the business. Sam remained active at the paper for the next fifty years. The company’s operation was headed by sons F. G. Archie Morris and then Stan Morris -- who remains involved with the paper to this day after over 60 years at The Maple Leaf -- and now by his son Paul Morris. The Maple Leaf has been located at the same downtown Port Dover location for over a century. Today, with

a dedicated, talented and knowledgeable staff, the paper produces both print and electronic editions each week, produces special publications and maintains a news website. With the way people are getting news today, the Maple Leaf can also be found at facebook.com/portdovermapleleaf and on twitter @PDMapleLeaf. Printing of flyers, business stationery, tickets, post cards, business cards and more, the Maple Leaf operates a commercial printing department. With all the changes over the years and changes yet to come, one thing remains the same... The Maple Leaf still cares about and reports on the people and events important to Port Dover residents.

INSIDE THE CLOCK TOWER

Watch boats in the harbour and on the lake all summer long.

The clock tower in downtown Port Dover -- at Lighthouse Festival Theatre -- was built 113 years ago in 1904. The clock was installed three years later and has weights similar to a grandfather clock hanging down inside the tower.

The century-old mechanism behind the clock faces at the top of the Main Street tower was installed when the clock first went in and still today keeps the clock running and keeping accurate time on its four giant clock faces.

This bell now sits atop the town hall clock tower just below the clock faces and can be heard ringing at 9 am, noon and 5 pm. It is marked “Jones & Company Foundery Troy N.Y. 1869.. It likely arrived in Port Dover by sailing schooner.
