CNT Culture Center
Project is located in the area in between Lincoln Park and Bucktown nearby the north Chicago river. Since replanning the old Finkl factory area as a new high-tech sustainable neighborhood, we treat the new culture center as a way to promote learning and inspiration pertaining to living in the city by rethinking neighborhood and reinforcing the potential connection between CNT (The Center for Neighborhood Technology is an existing nonprofit research and advocacy organization committed to improving urban economies and environments across the United States. They do this through innovation and by researching and analyzing urban problems, testing and promoting economically efficient and environmentally sound solutions, and demonstrating the value of investing in sustainable solutions) and public, community and neighborhoods. Serving the whole neighborhood, the CNT culture center has to find its place in the new planning space; between one of the future Chicago most busiest transportation hubs and a hybrid market hall. This is the context in which the culture center has proven itself with understanding of the character of the region and especially the historical expression.As the site previously set to be a park where plays as a public activity area, we need to carefully think about how the center merge into the city texture without damaging the original publicity and views. Processing the project, we finally decide to leave the planed park less modified and place the CNT culture center below the ground. In the meanwhile, it brought us another problem that we need to deal with the underground water. Reducing the budget for the neighborhood, we limited the subterranean part our building within one floor. As a result, we divide the building into three parts: Civic Center, Library and CNT Offices. All of them arranged in a continuous loop around the main courtyard which makes the use of spaces more efficient and interactivity well. What’s more, due to the demands of people in different daytime, we set different multi-functional spaces such as auditorium in the Civic center, classrooms and conference rooms in the CNT. At the same time, for identifying the culture center as a land mark, we extrude two glass box playing as entrances and a monumental chimney serving as inglenook which also generate more nature light and increase the ventilation.

New School of Architecture
The project is located in new campus of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture .Surrounded by the Qingyuan Road, Luqiu Road and Xiyong Road, the university is only two kilometers away from the new city center. As one of the best archiectural schools in Beijing, we purpose the new architecture department building to be an experiment which makes we rethink about how to define arhitecture school and what it should be under contemporary social culture. By redefining the information and communication ways in the building, we mutiply and mix different fuctions in and outside building. In the meadwhile, by reforming the traditional space, we create a new way to spectate how creativity happens among space, teaching, students, professors and environment. Designed for serving the whole campus, the new architecture department building has to find its between the requirment of quiet inner learning space and public connection within the university. We need to carefully balance those two conflicting context and aggregate them.Final, we decide to create a mega-structure which presents a new manifesto that provokes people to rethink about architecture under the contemporary social and culture contest with a public landscape terrace inserting inside. The building is comprised of four main components: an entrance hall, a three-story architecture studio and classroom chunk, a two-story office and workshop mass and a media center, all linked seamlessly into the Mega-Structure. The six-story high entrance hall hosts both main circulation core and exhibition space with an atrium. It provides different oportunities to learn how to observe objects from distinct aspects. Arranged in a terraced form, studio space offers more chances for communication. Seperated form main teaching space, workshops and offices are located on the first and second floor covering with curved public landscape platform surface. Media Center is another multi-functional geometry whose interior serves with media classroom and auditorium and exterior is paneled with LED screens for hosting public events.

The terraces and autrium can provide more oppotunities to communicate and house for exhibition and public events. Assembling glazing with membrain and aluminum panel, the facade can weak the strong day light and provide relatively comfortable native lumination. In the meanwhile, by infilling the air between membrane and glazing, the interior thermal comfort can be garenteed with less machanical ventilation.

Qing Yuan Community Renovation
Project is located in Hongqiao District, Tianjin. Built in 1970s, the old community are facing many problems. Lacking enough facilities and infilled popular self-organised street maket and violated parking destroyed inner living condition. Low-rent, dirty and chaotic apartment atrracted workers who are migrants from other provinces. Senior residents didn't have enough working out space. Low greening landscape made the entire environment lifeless. In the project, we attempt to find a more sufficient way to deal with the existing problems. Starting to think about population type, we find it is an oppotunity to renovate the old community into social housing project. On one hand, it creates apartment diversity to meet needs of immigrant workers and senior residents. On other hand, we could rearrange spaces to deal with exsiting maket and create more efficient public playgrounds and plazas. Contrasting to the traditional way, we distribute different functions vertically. Public spaces, landscape and market locate on the first floor. At the same time, meeting social needs of distinct houses, different parts owns their flexiblity which corresponds to residential requirements. The community will be revitalized again instead of being discarded by the society. It gives us multiple perspectives to sense and renders the flexible spaces. We hope to use this way to create a new community belonging. 窥 Different scenaries obtained through jogging encourage residents to keep moving in the landscape system which offers more possiblities for the public activies. Intergrated bottom structure with such senario, the form is given more meanings and dissolve into the context.

Doom City
The international shipping industry carries around 90% of the world trade, bringing benefits for consumers across the world. However, the seaborne process remained invisible and imperceptible to most people. In Panama, dozens of ships, more than the amount at the majority of ports, wait from 12 hours to 11 days to enter Panama Canal in front of its Pacific entrance, which creates an opportunity to establish a megastructure for the spectacle of logistics on water. Our target nomads, tourists coming to see this spectacle, will encounter seafarers traveling on the cargo ships and local fishers passing the area in their temporary settlement at the Dome City. The technical constraints of ship’s turning circle and stopping route generate patterns at the water level so that we can populate the ships’ waiting area with our megastructures. The expansion of the lock at Panama Canal makes it possible for the New Panamax cargo ships to pass through, which provides us the maximum size to accommodate in the spectacle. We chose circle as our base geometry because of its autonomous and non-directional quality in consistent with the nature of oceans. The minimum urban unit is one dome with one New Panamax of 366m or one tanker of 200m in the interior and several parking spaces for smaller cruise and fishing vessels at its feet. The three feet of the dome act as the entering points for the nomads and supplies. The city rooted in the infrastructure for ships grows on the surface of the dome structure, gradually changing from infrastructure of the logistics to the infrastructure of water management, and finally to the infrastructure of urban living. As opposed to traditional zoning, the locations of each urban program in the Dome City are decided by form generated by a series of operations. Circular plates are distributed from the foot across the dome surface by a random walk model customized to the type of nomads, their population and time of stay respectively. In such way, on the upper levels, circles will intersect with each other so that programs and spaces will be all tied together. The intersections give us possibility to create interior circulations for logistic supply and high-ceiling spaces for public program (e.g. threatre). On the interior, we use holes to reduce the depth of large plates allowing access to air and light and also creating views to the lower levels. While on the exterior, we use terraces of different height to soften the autonomy of independent circles on various levels. Then the programs are put in according to the dimension, form and edge conditions with a hierarchy from water management infrastructure and logistic circulation to urban living components. Terraces of 0.2m to 8m function as stairs, wading pool, water collection pool, water purifying landscape, theatre, market restaurant, living units and storage for supplies. Various living conditions give characteristics to the units. There are units with individual balcony, units with shared garden, units with double storeys, and units consisting of cluster of rooms and surrounding by balcony. Those units of standard room, double room, suite and apartment forms different types of communities, which in return shapes the form of the Dome City. By doing so, rich hybrid conditions of urban living will be created for this fantasy of infrastructural spectacle.
