About me My name is Alice, I am a 26 year old girl that was born and raised in Borgarfjörður, Iceland. The last 7 years I have lived in Denmark, working and studying. I decided to move to Denmark to study architecture at Aalborg University; it found my interest because of the way I could learn to work with integrated design, by working both with the architectural and engineering parts of the profession. The second reason I found Aalborg University interesting, is the way a lot of the work is organized in groups, which has strengthened my interpersonal skills a lot. Through my working experience I have been through many different professions, which has given me the strength of being very extrovert, service minded and good in personal contact. Beside that I would describe myself as a social and positive colleague, quick learner and creative at my work. I live with my boyfriend and my little wonderful 7 year old daughter, Klara Líf. I use a lot of my spare time with them and when I find time I try to practice basketball and go to the fitness centre. Otherwise I use lot of my time on my interests, looking out for new architecture and design, reading about it and I travel and try to experience as much as possible. Through my studies there has been a planned professional study trip every semester, which I have found very good for developing both social and professional skills. It has given me a good reference background and experience of different architecture in different countries and cultures. I have amongst other been to Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan and England. 8. semester - Minor project - Dancing Dune Minor project 2nd master semester The second minor project was under the theme: Dwelling, landscape and phenomenology. By using architecture as a medium for examining certain central phenomenological issues, the minor project introduced an understanding of dwelling within a specific landscape context and a poetic description. The aim was to design a shelter/ dwelling for an ornithologist on a site in the dramatic landscape on the coast northwest of Hanstholm, Jutland. Following is the poetic description and illustrations made for the presentation poster. “It had been a tough week for him. He was craving for a peace of mind and wanted to be, just be……. At the moment he drove from Hanstholm city he knew he was closer to his peace of mind. He took a left hand turn and saw his mental shelter rising in the landscape, higher and higher for every meter he came closer. It had been there all the time and he had used it for all it was worth.Getting himself together. It was his church in a way. He walked through the dramatic landscape towards the high cliffs in the north, standing as a painted background to the constant glimpses of the dancing shelter in the dunes. In all its glory the shelter fitted with its magnificent harmony to the dunes and the high sky. He got the feeling that it always had been there, waiting for him to get there a few times a year to renew his connection to nature and his sense of the natural coherency between people, animals and plants. While he got closer to the shelter he met the wall that was stretching towards west, making a shelter from the wind and leading him into the outdoor living space, which the afternoon sun had warmed up so it was just ready for afternoon barbequing. Fo lowed by watching the sun setting over the sea, guiding the countless birds to safe shelter at the shore. When he heard and felt the fresh breeze increasing he went inside and comfortably found his resting place underneath the dune, with the light from the embers in the wood stove slowly dying out. He woke up early in the morning with the sunlight sparkling on his window. He took his place on top of the roof to take a good look over his kingdom. Wading birds in the morning dew heading down to the river, he got his binoculars and his old worn out notebook, aiming for a closer glimpse. One rare bird spotted, and the stay at the shelter had become a memory for a lifetime in the heart of the birdman. Free as a bird……. and yet sheltered… “

The main form inspiration is taken in the most characteristic flora in the area, the wavy hair grass that dances in the wind, on top of the dunes. The choice of materials magnifies the integration of the shelter to its context and in materials that have been in the area for a long time and has taken their character of the place and time.

7. semester - Minor project - Creative Exhibition

The minor project on 7th semester had the purpose of developing a conceptual design proposal Office & PHD-students that clearly articulates a tectonic approach to architecture. The assignment was to design a proposal to a new university building for three creative Institutes Auditorium & Lecture room of Aalborg University to be located on the Aalborg harbor-front. We had been given functional and Secretary spatial requirements were I had to work with the organization of the building and relation to the context. The structure seems clear but again the joints on the buiding have not been detailed in such way that the bridge appears tectonic in order of Framptons theory. Because he also has a theory of that the joints are an important part of the tectonics. The joints articulate the meeting of materials and the type of structural elements.

3 in 1 The organizing of the university should increase the interdisciplinary and the social network between the 3 studies. The 3 in 1 concept for the different departments would also be a quality in sharing of functional areas as auditoriums. Therefore the 3 different studies are mixed equal between each other but still literally categorised in year groups. That way the building is divided into 5 elements were the students will have a larger group of interdisciplinary fellow students in the same area. The building site has critical importance in the design. The building is lifted from the ground to create bright and open rooms, which give the students a large exhibition area, at the same time branding the university and activity interacting with the cultural harbour front.

The constructions of the building is based on local materials and builds with simple geometrical forms, were the main structure large concrete blocks with lightweight steel and glass facades. This composition makes it clear were the building is open to interact with the context and at the same time it clearly separate the private zones.The detailing of the joints is simple and clearly showing concretes ability to absorb vertical loads. By referring to sketch of Furesø house by Jørgen Utzon it is possible to visualize the definition clearer. Here it is possible to see a very simple structure and also clear and simple joints, which makes it easier to read the building. As Utzon is able to make a dialogue through his tectonic approach there is my wish to achieve somewhat the same by designing a Building, which implement simplicity and logic in the structural expression.

7. Semester - Living bridge The main project on the 1st semester of my master degree within architecture was under the theme “Living Bridge”. The goal was to design a third connection across the Limfjord going through Aalborg. The main theme on the semester was to create tectonic design, which covers the ability to create a direct connection between the architecture and the technical aspects of materials, details and structural system. The project was arranged in a context analysis, concept creation, sketching phase as well as a documentation of structural system and acoustic calculations. The overall idea with the bridge was to create a connection between Nørresundby and the new cultural harbor front of Aalborg, where there is a vision to transform industrial areas to new functions. This should strengthen the role of the bridge as a transit space filled with life, containing a diverse range of functions. The final proposal gave the pedestrians the opportunity to achieve a 360° view of the harbor front from the top of the bridge, as well as the direct connection to the fjord by bringing the users down close to the water. This was seen as an important aspect to emphasize the qualities of the fjord in relation to the city. The regularity of the structural system stood in contrast to the fluently curved shapes of the bridge decks, making the structural system stand out as well as strengthening the overall expression of the bridge. I myself find the concept for the bridge very clear, as it links the bridge and the context together. The project focused a lot on the large-scale urban design, as it was a long process to figure out how and where the bridge element could complement the surrounding city structure, also in terms of which functions to incorporate. As a result of the scale and nature of the project the detailing left room for more investigation to be done in order to see the integration of structural and acoustic principles trough. Unfortunate this could not be done due to the extensive urban task inherent in the project. In the course of the semester I worked with a number of different aspects. I worked a lot with finding potentials in the context analysis as well as utilizing these in the making of a concept to be investigated in the creative process of modeling and sketching. Being the only one in the project group to work with the incorporation of the acoustic qualities I worked with a wide aspect, from outer shape to interior through sections and plans, to make sure the acoustic calculations fulfilled the demands, I feel confident in my work with this project, as I participated in all parts of the project, getting a broad understanding of the learning criteria for the semester.

6. semester - Minor project - Villa Jørgensen The minor project on 6th semester was within architecture. The main goal of this project was to process design the building in order to develop an understanding of sketching and process design in different design phases and the relation between these, as well as an understanding of the continuous creative process all the way to the final building design. The proposed case was a villa on 160 m2. I worked with the process design as a union between architectural and technical goals as well as developing the building design to a stage where it fulfilled the regulations for getting a building permit. This included detail drawings, energy calculations as well as structural calculations. The villa-case was originally intended as a brick wall building. As a personal reference I would at this point like to work with a wooden building as this would also be a way of achieving what I believe was a more interesting building design. Therefore I also undertook a large task as the existing drawings for the brick wall building would have to be transformed to match a wooden building. Even though this required some extra work I was very pleased with the result as it gave me more freedom in to influence the building expression in a personal way, as well as it gave me more knowledge within wooden architecture, which was a personal preference.

5. semester - Limfjordens Livende værft The main project on 5th semester was an architectural project with the main theme Program and Concept. This theme was a methodical build-up of a project process in three phases; program, concept development and concept detailing. The starting point was an internal concept competition for “The living shipyard of the Limfjord” at the western boatyard in Aalborg. Through analyzing, sketching and modeling in workshops there was focus on creating an initial concept containing organization, volume studies and formal expression. This created a background for the further development of the detailing, where there was focus on working with lighting conditions and setting up a structural system for further manual calculations, all relating to the architectonic expression. The technical aspects were used actively throughout the design. I learned a lot from this project due to a very extensive sketching process with focus on creating and using a lot of physical models, which I believe can be a very strong way of working with the formal expression. I was mainly responsible for the analysis phase, setup of the design program and the creative development of the concept. I also covered the organization of the group work, the AutoCAD drawings, the structural calculations as well as part of the presentation material.

Internship - Nýhönnun Island In the summer of 2007 I went on an internship at the architectural office Nýhönnun Hvanneyri Iceland. The reason for taking a summer internship was a desire to learn working in AutoCAD as well as to get an insight in the architectural business on Iceland. I enjoyed the stay both socially and professionally. The office consisted at that time of only 4 employees, which meant that I got to participate in all phases of the architectural practice. All their graphic output was in traditional 2D drawings for presentation on posters and most of my assignments were to draw projects in AutoCAD, both for the design and presentation phase. At the same time I got the opportunity to participate in meetings and cooperation with clients as well as finishing technical drawings. Through the internship I took part in four projects; one building project for the municipality, a family villa, a couple of summer houses as well as a renovation project on a house. I find my internship very interesting, as it is a completely different environment than what I am used to at the university. The way all aspects play an important role in the process; the economic, the personal preferences of the client and the technical skills, all leading to a solution that surprises the contractor by being even better than he or she hoped for. I feel like I learned a lot from this one summer. Another aspect differing from the university was the degree of organization with a very limited amount of time for all assignments. Many of the skills I gained from this internship I have brought along throughout my education with great success. Here is one of the project I draw during the summer, a luxury family summer house.

4. semester - The Dormitory - The building & built-up area The main project on 4th semester was divided into three phases going through the small, medium and large scale, which meant starting from the inside of the building and working through to the master plan. We started the project designing student housing units from the inside, with emphasis on creating interesting special qualities and experiences both indoor and outdoor from the basis of a cubic form. In the next phase, working in medium scale, we worked both with the interior qualities as well as facades to create a unified group of student housing units. Elements from the small and medium phases were then developed further in an architectural vision for an entire campus area including student housing as well as buildings for the university. These elements were for example to raise building blocks, to create space within space and to vary the building density. In this project there was a focus on the smaller scale, which resulted in a well-developed student housing area. This, I think, was a good prioritizing, since it gave the possibility to bring the student housing units to a high level of development compared to other projects focusing on the external large-scale qualities. For instance our investigations into the perception of light and special qualities through physical models gave us a lot of inputs to the project. My personal focus was on the context analysis as well as the sketching phase, where I worked a lot with modeling both physically as well as in Sketch Up. Finally I worked with the calculations of the structural system as well as the layout of the report and illustrations of the project.

3. semester - minor- Atelier The goal of the 3rd semester minor project was to create two ateliers in to different climatic zones as well as giving my personal expression of the what I perceive as architectonic quality. The buildings should have a high degree of special quality for human residence and activity. Therefore the key points to take into consideration were light, energy-use, indoor climate and acoustics with a focus on the differences between the chosen climatic contexts; Saudi Arabia with a very warm and dry climate and Denmark with its large temperature variation across the seasons. In addition to the interesting challenge of design to different contexts I had a personal goal for the project, stating that I wanted to make presentation drawings by hand as well as making detailed physical models. This was the first time I was confronted with a minor project with a large work load, but I used it to learn a lot about light, climate and architecture, which has been very useful in my later years of studying.

3. semester - ID - DD- Experience & product The main project on the 3rd semester was a combination between Digital Design and Industrial Design with the theme being “Experience and product�. The first part of the project consisted of creating an animation of an alternative universe through the use of 3D Studio Max. The industrial design aspect of the project focused on designing an outdoor light fixture to be placed in a certain scenario in Aalborg. The fixture should be used for emphasizing an outdoor space or building. The group was consisting of people with a lot of interest in architecture and urban design, which resulted in an extensive analysis of the intensity and visions of Aalborg. The final proposal was a fixture that could be used to preserve the history of Aalborg as an industrial city next to the fjord, lighting up the dark and abandoned industrial quarters. Therefore a light strategy for illuminating two large coal silos on the eastern harbour front was created. The effect of the light fixture is designed with inspiration in the designed virtual world. My personal interest in architecture has always had a focus on working with the existing context and how to use this, in this case by adding a simple illumination. My main assignments in this project was to partly contribute to the digital work in 3D Studio Max, to contribute to the context analysis and to control the methodical approach of the design process. I also took a large part in the actual design of the fixture, in the light studies and the structural calculations. In my opinion it has been interesting to get an insight in other study directions as it contributes with a different aspect in terms of design scale, which I think is relevant for an architect. The project also made me more confident in deciding the direction of my studies, as it gave an insight in the way the human scale has to influence design in order to make it attractive to the users, both in terms of buildings and detailing.

2. semester - Ă…gade, Living square The main project on 2nd semester was within the field of urban design. The objective was to create a lively market place and residence for the inhabitant of the city. After an analysis of the history and needs of Aalborg city we chose to renovate an existing market place near Ă…gade in the centre of Aalborg. To achieve a structured design process and general knowledge of urban design, different design methods were investigated and the most relevant used to control the design phase. At the same time we did studies of similar squares and market places around the world. This was used actively as inspiration and also to get an insight in how different instruments can be used to generate life and inspire to reside in the urban space. After that we moved on to design the roof cover for the market place using a lot of physical models as well as sketching and finding inspiration in Frei Ottos design of membrane roofs. In my opinion the inspiration was taken to literal but educating in the way we got to work with the detailing and how the physical elements contributes to the users experience of the place. My personal contribution to the project was in an organising role as well as being the one setting up the report in layout. I was also very active in the creative phase as well as within the production of presentation drawings and model work. I find the project to be an interesting solution to the initial problem.

1. semester - Allotment hut The main project on 1st semester was an architectonic project with the theme �Models of reality�. The goal of the project was to create an allotment hut based on studies in transparency and phenomenology. The allotment hut should fulfil the needs of a user seeking a breathing space away from a busy everyday life. The allotment hut and surrounding garden was designed with an emphasis on creating space within space by utilising the different functions in the hut and garden in a way where every space is defining other spaces around it to create a unified building and garden area. The design also took its offset in an analysis of the history behind allotment huts and the user group. Transparency was used as an architectonic instrument by overlapping vertical and horizontal lines to create different degrees of transparency. At the same time the phenomenological approach in terms of experiencing the space played an important role in the design, as it was a goal to achieve different experiences when moving through the garden and hut. Personally I found this project very educational and with an interesting architectural product even though it was my first actual project within the field of architecture. We spend a lot of time getting acquainted with the methods behind working in groups with a problem based approach. Fortunately we quickly got the theories and methods under control and had time to Concept spend relatively much of our energy in the sketching phase, doing models, light investigations and hand sketching. This project made it clear to me that this was an education that I found interesting. My tasks in the project was both project organisation, create development, modelling and testing as well as presentation material.

4. semester - Minor project - Bionic The minor project on 4th semester was about taking inspiration in nature and transforming it to a solution within the field of industrial design. I found the inspiration in the passion fruit and its ability to protect its seeds within its shell. I redeveloped this principle into the design of a container for medicine. This project was very interesting and a different approach to designing, by using inspiration from structures and their development in nature to develop new ideas. As a personal goal for the project I used hand drawings for my presentation. The product solution received good criticism at the exam and I was very pleased with the process and result.
