Motivation Letter As a native growing up in Suzhou City, a historic city with more than 2500 years history in China, I have witnessed its huge change of urbanization and modernization in recent decade. The fading of heritage and historical buildings makes me realized the importance about the reuse of existing buildings and building conservation. During my undergraduate study in the department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China and University of Liverpool in UK. A series of courses related to architecture history or introduction enable me to have a better understanding towards China and European countries’urbanization, urbanism, urban societies and urban political economies. Also, through Urban Infill program in Manchester and Maritime Gallery design project which located at Albert Dock, a historical site in Liverpool as well as other different design project. I have not only learnt conceptual tools, analytical methods, visualization technologies and theoretical frameworks to understanding urban environments and realize my original ideas into reality, but also increased my understanding about the reuse of existing building and heritage conservation or transformation of historical city. Being an architect, particularly being a professional who can deal with reuse of existing buildings has always been my interest as well as my career plan. With the rapid development of urbanization in China, it is an opportunity for architects to work on the reuse of existing buildings and heritage conservation in transformation of cities. Studying in University of Edinburgh would not only remarkably broaden my horizons to advanced approach in architecture but also would endow me with a valuable ability of innovative synthesis. In particular, the Athens: Salvaging Urbanism studio is what I am interested in for its deep expertise in the study about complex contemporary conditions of Athens and critical architectural projects for this historical city which will be developed from urban strategy, thus it is my conviction that through your program of Salvaging Urbanism, I will definitely have the chance to fulfill my dream of being an professional architect with social responsibility and contribute to the transformation of cities in China. I firmly believe my great passion, my academic background, and my practical experience will make me a good candidate for you. Thank you and I appreciate the time taken to read this motivation letter.

BACK AND FORTH: A New Liverpool School of Architecture Location: Liverpool, UK Type: Individual Academic Work Tutor: James Jones (J.Jones@Liverpool.ac.uk) Third Year Second Semester Studio Project This project aimed to provide a well-designed new School of Architecture in the existing car parking behind the current building. Particular attention need to be paid to the conception of architectural space, the impact of the project at an urban level, the community agenda and sustainability issues. Within the architectural thinking, student need to apply the concept of sustainable development as : "a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". The concept of this project is 'Connection' and 'Contrast' which concluded by the analysis and conceptual mapping processs in the early stage of design and realized by organising different fuctional space, relationship between site and context in urban scale, as well as the use of different materiality.

Space of Illusion, Digital Collage

By taking the studio space on the first floor in the old school of architecture to the ground floor on the site and replace the solid wall with glazing to get the view of cathedral, gym and vegetation outside the site, the familiar space could be totally different and new atmosphere of the orginal space will be created.

Conceptual Mapping The context of the site is consist of a series of different building with different function. By picking the buildings including school of architecture, mathematic building, library, laboratory building along the main traffic route, the analysis of thees buildings shows they have the similarity in materiality and space. The axonometric drawing of these building describe the height and realtionship among different buildings. The 'conenction' which represents staircase, entrance or walk way between different buildings are semi-open space or glazing space which appears the strong contrast to the solid construction material. By keeping the 'Connection' and 'Contrast' in design concept, the new school of architecture could extend the characteristics of the campus.

INTO THE DOCK: Maritime Gallery At Albert Dock Location: Liverpool, UK

Type: Individual Academic Work Tutor: James Jones (J.Jones@Liverpool.ac.uk) Third Year First Semester Studio Project

This design is a material-based project, mainly focuses on interior atmosphere created by one particular material. The scheme locates on two graving docks is designed as a branch gallery of the existing Maritime Museum near the site. The main concept of this proposal is intersection in views and space, which divide different function by a central wall and provide the change of different views including modern area and historical area for vistors when they walk through the gallery. By using timber as main material for this scheme, it could create different atmosphere and texture from brick or concrete material-based buildings in this site. The material study is also applied in the early stage of design process to acquire a better understanding of timber structure and atmosphere that timber architecture could create.

URBAN INFILL: A Public Library in Manchester Location: Manchester, UK Type: Individual Academic Work Tutor: Rashid Ali (R.Ali@uel.ac.uk) Second Year Second Semester Studio Project This project aimed to respond to the hierarchy of the two street conditions, the idea of modifying the site including the adjacent blocks and ground, and the material relationship between proposal and the immediate and broader context. Through the project it is required to explored a variety of spatial ideas and developed spatial narratives with themes such as closed space, inside space, external space, tall space, structure, edge, threshold, solid, void, volume, plane, envelope, etc.which lead to a building on this tight urban site that appropriately responds to its context and that demonstrates the significance of the building as beacon within the city. The concept of this library is to showing contrast from traditional building near the site in materiality but also control the sclae and impact on this neighborhood by providing a 'isolated' library space for vistors in the city center of Manchester.

URBAN INFILL: A Public Passageway in Manchester Location: Manchester, UK Type: Individual Academic Work Tutor: Rashid Ali (R.Ali@uel.ac.uk) Second Year First Semester Studio Project The site located in the center of Manchester, which is 15 minutes away from the Picaddily Square, and between two historical five floors building now used as youth hotel and warehouse. The different typology of this area and urban planning make difference to the two street beside the site. The understanding of these difference and to change the original site in order to improve this area can be very important. The large scale painting on one of the walls in the site brings more challenge to this project. A passage way contain cafe, dancing studio, toilet, shop and public space can be a interesting project in this unique site.

The contrast of figure ground and historcal map in 1921

By comparing the figure ground of the site based on Kevin Lynch's theory with the historical map of the site in 1920s. Analysing the usage and change of the site. It is possible to develop the concept from the form, layout and open space in 1920s building on this site.

The concept developed from the open space on the site in the historical map. By turning the "open space" to "close space", the open space in historical map become the "Core" of the site. The lifted dancing studio and the cafe, shop and office on the ground floor and first floor create strong impression on people who walk by. The opposite space ensure the ventilation and daylight on the public space in the middle. Inspiring human illusion or imagination to match with the huge painting on the wall is the beginning of the design.

The site analysis based on Lynch's theory of node, path, edge, landmark, edge, district to define the feature of hte site. By analysing the site, the difference of two street beside the site and how to drive people walk through and also increase the use of the narrow street can be the vital part of the design. The light condition of the site will be considered, especially in winter to improve the use of the narrow street on the north side of the site.

The tree shape "core" create different space atmosphere and form strong constrast to the historical building near the site, Meanwhile, the opening in the middle vertically keep the original impresive drawing also give people a chance to enjoy the painting closely and in a different position. The strong shape of the passage way can be a future landmark in this area.
