INNOVAT I ON TH R O U G H

Every Design Problem is Unique Multi-Disciplinary Practice No discipline is an island, especially architecture. To further understand a problem, designers must seek insights from outsiders. Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds contributes to a renewed perspective of viewing the problem and approaching the solution. 2 l Josef Ponce l PortfolJo

Architecture shouldn’t be a cookie-cutter solution. A design problem must not be defined by a stylistic form or trend. It should answer to the needs of the users and context primarily based on functionality, sociability, sustainability, aesthetics and economy.

Adding Value Design decisions shouldn’t always resort to the cheapest option. Architects are responsible in explaining to clients the value of every design element, whether it’s investing on materials or allocating more green spaces. It is important that the client recognizes the longterm benefits of design beyond aesthetics.

ACHIEV E CO LLABORAT I ON

Sensitive to the Context User Experience The behavior of users crafts the space. A study on the movement of people and goods is essential in establishing the layout of spaces. The goal of architecture is not just to provide spaces for people but also to become a conduit for engaging human interactions.

The environment has to be treated of equal importance with the users. In the age of global warming and climate change, sustainable design should be a prerequisite in all aspects of design. Passive green strategies such as maximizing natural light and ventilation, use of green materials such as low VOC paints must already be a given in all types of projects.

Holistic Approach Ultimately, balance and sound judgement are essential to execute a seamless project. It is vital to review back and forth the big picture and the small details that make up the whole. Josef Ponce l PortfolJo I 3

SAN LORENZO DUPLEX Type: 3-Storey Residential Duplex Size: 400 sqm. Location: Makati City, Philippines Status: Design Development Involvement: In a team of three, we were personally tasked to produce our individual schemes which outlined our own approach in architectural programming and space planning. The scheme presented is produced and rendered by myself. Other tasks included sourcing of possible materials for the architectural skin and seeking quotations from suppliers. The preliminary budget of the project was also studied in parallel with deciding the appropriate materials. In the team, I also initiated the daylight studies done using the Velux Daylight Software.

TORRE RESIDENCE Type: Vacation House Size: 550 sqm. Location: Bacolod City, Philippines Status: Contract Documentation Involvement: My main contribution for the development of the form is the rationalization of the structural members. I proposed a geometric support and base, to compelement the prominent triangulated roof. I was also vital in developing the architectural interiors for the project by specifying most of the FF&Es and material applications. Coordinating with suppliers near the site was quite a challenge but essential to meet the requirements of the client.

Josef Ponce l PortfolJo I 15

The house was situated at the highest point of a vast open land outside the city. The openings of the structure are well-thought because of the picturesque views of a volcano and natural formations that are available on-site. The ceiling height formed by the angular roof gave an opportunity to maximize the vertical spaces, especially in the bedrooms, which allowed for mezzanine spaces for additional beds. Diagonal louvers were also proposed to act as a sunscreen and to reduce the overwhelming height while inside the space. Wood materials and neutral colors were specified to induce an aura of warmth and home for the users. Tiles with volcanic patterns and stone finishes were also matched in space because of it’s relatedness to a natural landmark.

JUJU EATS ROCKWELL BC Type: Salad Bar Restaurant Size: 127.20 sqm. Location: Ortigas Center, Philippines Status: Built (2014) Involvement: For Commercial and Retail projects, brand review is essential to emphasize the identity of the client. I was greatly involved in applying these branding concepts into the space planning and materials specifications From concept to contract documentation, I assited in producing the architectural plans and details for bidding to contractors. Coordination with engineering consltants were also handled by my team. Since the client was meticulous and particular, I also took part in supervising the site progress, preparing the punch list for rectification and complete turnover of the project.

L’OFFICIEL MAGAZINE AND ROGUE MEDIA OFFICE Type: Publishing Studio Size: 293.1 sqm. Location: Makati City, Philippines Status: Built (2015) Involvement: To properly accomodate the growing scale of the publishing house, our team conducted a study through survey and interviews and prioritized the essential requirements such as proper lighting, enough usable storage and convenient layout for the users, which they didn’t have in their previous office. I was greatly involved in planning the layout of the rooms and the furniture. My most remarkable contribution was the brick pattern layout of the reception which was inspired by negative spaces. Similar to other projects, I assisted in carrying the construction drawings, facilitated the bidding process and review and supervised the construction progress.

EMAPTA OFFICE MANILA Type: Australian Outsourcing Office Size: 413.70 sqm. Location: Makati City, Philippines Status: Contract Documentation Involvement: In such small space, we were tasked to fit over a hundred and fourty workspaces for each employees. For this project we didn’t just produced the architectural drawings, but also designed furniture for their needs. Part of our scope was also specifiying durable materials that would address their acoustic needs, since BPOs are generally noisy.

28 l Josef Ponce l PortfolJo

The concept of the furniture is to be relaxed yet functional - similar to the ambiance of the workspace. The environment has to help the users to distress from work. As such, these pallet furniture invites a relaxing and playful vibe. Functionality wise, iIt’s designed to be flexible: it can be a coffe table, a seating area and can even be stacked as a table.

ARCHIPRIX MADRID 2015: BALAI-TULAY - UTILIZING HABITABLE BRIDGES AS A NEW PARADIGM FOR PUBLIC HOUSING Type: Multi-dwelling Bridge Housing Size: 14,520 sqm. Location: Manila, Philippines Status: Published URL: http://www.archiprix.org/2017/index. php?project=3576 Involvement: Balai-Tulay is my undergraduate thesis which was presented in COAM Madrid. It garnered 2nd best thesis in the graduating batch. The thesis is an exploratory paradigm that seeks to address alternative concepts in approaching public housing in the country. The project primarily integrated a housing facility with a bridge structure as a bold statement for on-site relocation for low-income households. By combining these two structures, the project explores a new dwelling culture emerging from an eccentric environment of a habitable bridge.
