A Sheer Sense of Time JETHRO JACKSON

It’s about capturing a moment

A Sheer Sense of Time The things that inspire me remain constant - memories and emotions arising from the textures of the land and the effect of the light on the sea. In this new collection of paintings, the addition of bold, vertical planes create a time-lapse view of this familiar landscape, and recall visual snapshots taken from different points during the day, which are overlapped to create a single, balanced image. I remain connected to the environment that surrounds me, and the more time I spend in it, the more it becomes embedded in my memory. These paintings are collections of my memories.

I want to capture the sense of place I use paint to describe a memory and a feeling. The layers of paint are built up over time, rapidly applied, scraped back and added to without conscious thought. It is an intuitive response to my materials and experiences which describes the feeling of a place.

This is where I’m from In my paintings, I want to capture the everchanging light and expansive horizon of the coastline. Over the years, my awe at the landscape has continued to grow and I am still enthralled and humbled by a spectacular sunset or storm. My studio is a place for creative contemplation, away from the distractions of changeable weather and rising tides. Working from my easel, time stops as I create paintings from memories and rapid sketches made in the landscape. Working in this way allows time to focus on the process of making a painting by adding free-form layers of information. Each mark is a connection to the materials I work with, as well as the sights and sounds which inspire me. Boat Study (Porthilly)

I am constantly moving forward Over the years, my style has evolved to incorporate new techniques but I have always been led by a subconscious way of working which naturally leads to developments in style. At this point, my aesthetic is stripped back to gestural marks and simple forms and the painterly, abstracted images are created intuitively by building up planes of information. The unknown consequences of a splatter or smudge, the removal of layers through scratching and scraping, the vertical lines and abstract forms are punctuated by figurative references such as a sailing boat cutting across the estuary, a surfer catching a wave or a family walking on the beach. Changing and adapting is an inevitable part of my painting process and a move towards abstraction is the path I currently find myself on. The more connected I feel to my materials, the more confident I become when exploring the boundaries of the pictures’ surface and composition, as I allow myself to be led by my own creativity. The act of painting has become a major influence too and often I make new images based on small sections of existing works. In this way, one painting leads to the next, and there is always a connecting thread of ideas and repetitive motifs, which are built up from memories.

What I’m about It’s always been there: a natural response to the world around me to create art. From an early age the one thing I enjoyed doing most was drawing. Originally I just loved draughtsmanship. Consequently, I have this inbuilt natural perspective ability so I can draw at high speed. I can scribble a drawing quickly and make it pretty accurate. If there are a few structural points that are correct, the painting works. I enjoy being in the studio to paint. I like being out and about but only to form the basis of a new group of paintings. Then in the studio I can focus and I have a much clearer idea of what I want to do. Sometimes I’ll just see a painting and it’s in my head. Is it the same painting when it’s finished? Probably not. I let the paint dictate. So I start by under-painting – running colour over the board. That gives me line, texture and moments of impromptu creation and those are the magic moments. For me, the memories of this place, those little moments in time that are so special to people – these are the feelings that I like to capture in my paintings.
