THE ART OF TOMORROW

Rudolf Bauer Hilla Rebay Irene Rice Pereira Rolph Scarlett

ESSAY FROM STEVEN LOWY Art history has the power to self-correct. Subsequent generations of curators, dealers, and collectors have the benefit of a vantage point that is neither influenced nor obscured by the gossip, drama and power struggles that may have surrounded an artwork (or movement) in its time. If the recent acceleration in the number of exhibitions of work by Rudolf Bauer, Wassily Kandinsky and The Art of Tomorrow is any indication, then we are bearing witness to just such a correction today. The first public exhibition in New York City of the Solomon Guggenheim Collection of The Art of Tomorrow was in 1939 at what was then called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. This year, 2014, we mark the 75th Anniversary of that opening. There have been exhibitions at the German Consulate and at Sotheby’s New York. PBS aired Betrayal a documentary about Bauer and an Off-Broadway play about Bauer and Rebay with often passionate characters also marked the event. Portico New York rounds out this commemorative year with a group exhibition of four of the Artists of Tomorrow: Rudolf Bauer, Hilla Rebay, Rolph Scarlett and Irene Rice Pereira. Hilla Rebay, Solomon Guggenheim’s art advisor and the founding director of the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (now the SR Guggenheim Museum), was a brilliant collage artist, a wonderful watercolorist and a very good painter. She gave name to the Art of Tomorrow movement, devoting her life to promoting it at the expense of her own artistic output. While accused at the time of being overzealous in her promotion of a form of art that for her was a spiritual pursuit, her single-minded focus and belief in non-objective art helped create the momentum for what is now a Guggenheim empire of four major museums with a global reach. After Bauer and Kandinsky, Canadian born artist Rolph Scarlett was the third most collected artist by Solomon Guggenheim. No fewer than sixty works by Scarlett were in the Founding Collection when Solomon died. A prolific artist who lived a long and productive life, Rebay and Bauer considered him a friend, an equal and their greatest discovery. Major paintings by the artist currently hang in the LA County Museum and the de Young Museum in San Francisco. I. Rice Pereira, who signed her name using her first initial to hide the fact that she was a woman, was another Rebay discovery. Pereira was a mystic, an ardent Modernist and a student of both Moholy-Nagy and Hans Hofmann. She worked simultaneously on abstract paintings and lyrical mythological works on paper, all of which exhibit a breadth of spirit and vision that place her firmly in the pantheon of great American Modernists. One of the few women given a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney in the 1950s, her work graces many museum collections including the Guggenheim, MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We invite you to come to Soho to rediscover the “Art of Tomorrow.”
