Re: Tidal Power Solutions

To The Editor:

Mysuggestion for the tide- mill is as follows: Electricity to be used for industrial purposes not requiring attendance by workers, such as electrolysis of manganese and/or hydrogen (with a by-product of oxygen).

This is because tides "wait on no man."

Benton MacKaye, the father of the Appalachian Trail, thought it up. He . was a friend of my father's, and I called on him when he was living in the Cosmopolitan Club, a retirement club in D.C.

Some day, hydrogen will be an important prime mover.

The East/West Highwaywill enable hydrogen to go West. Bill Clark thinks it should be a-railroad. How about rails down the median strip? Alexander I. Mitchell Kezar Falls

Quoteout Re: "The Art Of The City," Septembet, 1987

To The Editor:

As a director of one ofthe country's leading galleries, I am app~lled at the insensitive and unprofessional "reporting" ofjeffBelyea in his recent article.

I would never, even in jest, utter the type of facetious remark misquoted in the article ("Phil Stein offers to shoot the artist to immediately raise the price of a piece if it will help you decide").

The question asked by Belyea was, "Can you guarantee appreciation of work by your artists?" The correct quote was, "The only way any gallery can suggest such a thing is if the artist is no longer producing, due to death or illness." Even that is no guarantee.

It is always a plus for any city to have a publication as deeply committed to the arts as Portland Monthly, but in this case, no publicity is better than bad reporting.

Looking forward to your next issue. Philip Stein Portland
